Andrew Bynum: ‘Santa Claus’ Lakers Gave Thunder a ‘Gift’ in Game 2

by Marcel Mutoni @marcel_mutoni

With two minutes to go in a hotly contested Game 2, the victory seemed fairly secure for the Los Angeles Lakers last night. They were up by seven points, had held the explosive OKC Thunder in check, and seemed on the verge of tying up the series at 1 game apiece heading back to Hollywood.

But, then, doom arrived at the Lakers’ doorstep.

Kobe Bryant started coughing up the rock, Kevin Durant and James Harden scored quickly and easily, and Steve Blake missed the potential game-winning shot.

Andrew Bynum — who was spotted laughing as soon as the final buzzer sounded — seemed bemused by the whole sad affair, and compared his team to Santa Claus:

Bynum on the last two minutes: “Oh my goodness, we’re better than Santa Claus. Gave them a gift”

“Man that was crazy. We’re better than Santa Claus, we like giving out gifts. We give out games, contracts and rings.”

Last night presented the Lakers with their best chance to make this series a truly competitive one, but they instead let victory slip through their hands, as the Thunder woke up in crunch time and scored the game’s final 9 points.

Los Angeles will be the scene of Games 3 and 4 (a brutal back-to-back this Friday and Saturday), and OKC won’t be looking for any more “gifts”. They’ll be coming to take what increasingly appears to be theirs.

kobe had two turnovers during that stretch and all he could think of in press conference was blaming the thunder for gambling on steals..what?

  • Riggs

I really hope they get swept now, because of this dumb*ss.

  • http://kb24.com x-DrEw_MaiN-x

damn bynum, i thought u were better than this…

  • ti-sizzle

If that’s what you need to say to “justify” your loss, then so be it. What a loser mentality. Bynum is a very tall spoiled kid with long arms. Take away his long arms and heigh and he is just a kwame brown

  • capostat

Nothing wrong with Bynum’s statements. He’s expressing frustration at the stupidity with which they (certain players) played at the end. One of those feelings when you so pissed, and stunned by what happened that you just have to laugh. He’s basically calling people out by saying, “what the F are we doing?!We just want to mess around out there?”

Laughing after a loss like that is never good.

  • Riggs

@capostat: who else on that team other than bynum and maybe gasol gives up on games?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Royal

I understand his frustration…Kobe , who many people consider the top closer in the NBA,shat himself last night…I’m a die-hard laker fan , but Kobe proved once again last night that he is not the closer that many of his fan boys thinks he is……

  • http://www.slamonline.com Royal

And I have met plenty of people who try to “laugh things off” when they are truly angry or frustrated , I think thats what Andrew is doing….

  • http://www.fullc0urtpress.com KHOLIDAY05

Dont see what’s wrong with his statements… I mean for starters he wasn’t lying! Lakers did give up this game! He’s clearly frustrated tho, which is okay to be when you’re losing. If someone on the Bobcats felt like this about losing, they wouldnt be applying for a move to the Big East next year!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Nick Tha Quick

Funniest thing Bynum could say is,”We really need our shooting guard to play better at the end of games. Jordan Hill is only teammate I can count on to play without fear.”

  • Mike From Spain

Bynum said the LAkers gave the game away just as much as the Thunder won it. I haven’t watched the game but it looks there is something to that. That said, after the whole ‘closer games are easy’ thing, he probably should have refrained from making this last statement.

  • Anthony

ahah Nick, that would have been quote of the year definitely

  • neaorin

    Ho Ho Ho.

  • whooo!

i laughed at the gambling for steals comment by Kobe too… both plays were complete gifts to the OKC defenders — one was practically right into Durant’s hands, and no foul on the fast-break. i hate to say it, but Bynum’s right that it was gift-wrapped. what REALLY sucks for them is that this older Lakers team now has to o a back-2-back at home, which could end up negating any home-court advantage of playing at Staples.

  • http://www.offthebackboard.wordpress.com Off The Backboard

    Last night is on Kobe.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Bynum be wilding.

  • Alicia

They let that game go, they played good for the first 40 sum minutes smh, Bynum this kid makes me laugh!!!

  • Mooch_32

If i’d be Bynum i’d be pissed.
Pretty terrible end of the game for the Lakers, or should I say Kobe. So many bad shots. Bynum was dominating inside…he may never say the right things, but I can’t wait to see this guy blowup, and have Kobe realize, maybe he shouldnt be chucking up so many shots, and maybe let the dominate player get the rock.

After this series the Mamba s gonna get turned out into handbags. As much as i think the Lakers will win the next game i Know Thunder will sweap them. There you go.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

I think that Bynum has come to the realization that he will never the get ball down the stretch of close games consistently.

  • elmaar

Mooch, I would love to see that. As much as a knucklehead he is I really like Bynum and I truly believe that Bynum has the nuts to call out Kobe and the leverage to get him shipped the fuk out of LA.

  • http://www.soundcloud.com/tray-5 T-Ray

If they want to be dominant they have to get Bynum more touches on a consistent bases. And I think Bynum is about the only person who would call out Kobe.

  • T-Money

i think bynum WANTS to be traded to orlando to show that he can be a 28-30 ppg scorer like shaq was. i really do.

  • Dee

Lakers are about to turn this series around by winning the next four. They found the formula how to slow OKC down…this will come in handy the rest of the series starting with next 2 games in LA. I see back to back LA blowouts Fri & Sat and expect another tight one in OKC, with the close out game back in LA. Kobe wants to win as much as anyone in the puple and gold…sad to say but he wants to be the reason the Lakers win (by taking bad shots or jumpers late in the game)hopefully he’ll watch the game over and fix those late game decisions. Remeber how MJ had signature moments in the Finals? Kobe is trying to have the same thing…he should be careful though b/c OKC is not the team to play with. Last nights game showed that. Having said all that, I still see the Lakers winning in 6. Call me crazy but its’ setting up that way!

  • JL

Dee, Kobe’s been doing this his whole career. He’s not fixing what he doesn’t think is broken. This is becoming a similar situation to Shaq and Kobe again except Kobe’s the older one this time.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

If Kobe wouldn’t get Shaq touches, why would he concede them to Bynum?
    C’mon people.

  • http://www.soundcloud.com/tray-5 T-Ray

    A guy can dream Allen

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OVM11tMaMWg LakeShow

T-Ray, you honestly are going for that? I mean I expect it of some dunce people, but you should no better from watching the Lakers so much. Bynum doesn’t get position as well as he should at all for his size. He only gets deep post position maybe 5-8 times max a game. Those are his only “good” looks he gets. He isn’t effective from anywhere except 8 feet in. Why “dump” it to the mid/high post? Bynum isn’t effective there at all. He needs to get deep post position before I expect Kobe to just “dump” it to the post every time. Believe me. BELIEVE me, Kobe would pass the ball to Bynum every single damn time if he got deep post position, but he doesn’t. Don’t even get me started on Pau’s post positioning. I don’t really care much for Pau getting a ton of looks around 15 feet either. I’m not afraid of him shooting those, but we all no that is not where he is most effective. I’m down to blame Kobe when he deserves it, but you all are fools if you think it’s as simple as “Kobe just needs to dump the ball to the post, then they can win.” If Ramon Sessions or Steve Blake showed up in any fashion that game is a win so it’s not like they did something terribly wrong like in the first game.

  • http://www.soundcloud.com/tray-5 T-Ray

Na Lake I’m not fully believing that at all. I just feel there are times where he doesn’t need to get that deep to get that ball. And unlike other people I don’t put the blame 100% on Kobe for not feeding the post. I’m with you that Sessions hasn’t lived up to the hype I created for him. Like I said on TPU they played a great game for 46 minutes then had a mental relapse but still had a shot to win it with the 3 so I’m not hitting the panic button like a lot of folks are. I think you and I are staying level headed lol

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OVM11tMaMWg LakeShow

I mean the loss is on Kobe. Not trying to deny that. You play like sh*t in the last minute or two when your team is up and then they lose. That’s on you(Kobe). BUT, I just don’t go for this, Kobe needs to feed the post more stuff. Kobe passes into the post more than anyone else. Blake doesn’t pass into the post. Sessions doesn’t unless he creates a play (which is becoming more and more rare these days). Pau misses Andrew all the time when he has the ball at the high post. (Which BTW is the most important time to get Andrew the ball, when he is all by himself with Pau dragging his guy out of the paint.) Barnes does a pretty good job of gettign the ball into the post, but for the most part it’s not a “Kobe problem.” Not saying he doesn’t miss opportunities. He does. But he has been really impressive so far in the playoffs in regards to passing the ball. And yes, even after last nights debacle, I want Kobe with the ball at the end of games. Not Bynum getting double teamed and turning it over. Kobe’s TO’s were flukes. He doesn’t typically do stuff like that. Bynum on the other hand is almost a guaranteed TO if you give him the ball in the post and he gets doubled or triple teamed.

  • http://www.soundcloud.com/tray-5 T-Ray

I think we don’t give enough credit to Perkins because he tends to play the best defense on Drew in recent memory. And I have been screaming at my tv for a while wondering why Pau and Drew don’t run more high low action. It would be damn near unstoppable since Pau is a threat from the high post with the j and you have to double down on Bynum. Why they don’t run it more is mind boggling.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OVM11tMaMWg LakeShow

Perkins is great defensively. Screw what people said about Garnett making up for his lack of defense. Perk is a great post defender. Exactly Ray, straight screaming at the TV with the Pau on the high post ignoring Andrew. SHM. lol. …(laughing to ease the pain)

  • Bill

Does Bad Legs Bynum just hate his team?

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Whoever said Perkins was a bad defender? He’s been regarded as an elite defender for years now. He and Garnett were regarded by many as the best defensive frontcourt in the NBA.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OVM11tMaMWg LakeShow

Allot of people allen. They were saying when he first came to OKC(and was injured eeehk eemm) that he was only good at defense with Garnett next to him.
Don’t mean to throw you under the bus, but NBK, weren’t you one of those people?

  • http://none kbdumas

This only means that our point guard priority aint’ named Sessions. He’s been good but gettin’ exposed now. Well Kobe’s been Kobe… Nah at least he doesn’t regularly chokes compared to a self crowned king

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I said Perkins was overrated because he signed a contract where he gets paid $10M+ a season. I never said he was an overrated defender.

  • Yesse

Is he serious? Every article on slam, that includes Bynum, is making him look more immature. Besides i have no idea what the Lakers were doing in the last two minutes. The game was theirs the whole last quarter, but then they gave them free points.

  • ti-sizzle

Well nbk I’m gonna throw you under a train like the one ran on Lakeshow’s mom. You did hate on Perky. Don’t deny it.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OVM11tMaMWg LakeShow

My mom does get f*cked by large metal, engine powered, machines. This is true.

  • ti-sizzle

Please don’t attempt to take power from my jokes by agreeing in a dismissive manner. Thnx.

  • http://slamonline.com The Philosopher

    ^^ Is that you, Tarzan?

  • Rainman

This dude needs to stfu. he’s just annoying, and is incredibly immature. Laughing after a loss like that? c’mon son.

  • Dee

Perkins, Ebaka and Durant = a pretty good defensive frontcourt. No double teams required, they’re playing you straight up! Lakers must position themselves better and the smalls need to penetrate more and kick it to a big like OKC does whenever a Laker defender comes to help. This games is about adjustments. Let’s see how the Lakers adjust to the pressure they face the last 2 mins of the game…Lakers are still winning in 6.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Bad game, Bad loss, Lakers know they can beat Thunder now.

  • robb

Man Kobe f*cked up big time. Bad, bad decisions at the end of the game may have cost them the series.

  • Dj J

Its not a close out game yet. Your gonna play in your home court. Get the F***ing win man. You can do this. You beat them in tha past, you can do it again.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

…don’t take power from my jokes….??

Trying not to leave a carbon foot print here, and the lameness from your comments could power the world for days…

  • Metrobus

So, let me get this straight. If Kobe, a champion, assassin, clutch-shooter, etc, etc. you guys call him, effs the hell up in the last 2 minutes of the 4th quarter of a close game, he did not choke because of his WAY PAST accomplishments? Or what was it? since he is the best basketball player in the world for you. It really is a double standard for that other guy….

  • Scott

Hey Dacre, shutup. You’re whole comment was corny geek.
