Charlotte Bobcats to Interview Jerry Sloan

by Marcel Mutoni @marcel_mutoni

Having been away from the grind of coaching an NBA team for over a year now, Jerry Sloan has the itch again. And, wouldn’t you know it, but Sloan has interest in coaching the sad-sack that is otherwise known as the Charlotte Bobcats.

Sloan is expected to meet with Charlotte’s management team as early as this week, and the Hall of Fame coach also expressed interest in joining the Orlando Magic.

From the Salt Lake Tribune and Fox Sports:

Sloan said on Tuesday that he has talked to Charlotte owner Michael Jordan about the Bobcats’ job and could meet with him as early as this week. [...] Reached at his farm outside McLeansboro, Ill., Sloan made it clear he would like to return to coaching after being away from basketball for 15 months. Sloan resigned as coach of the Jazz in February of 2011, citing fatigue after 23 seasons. Asked if he had talked to any team about a job opening, Sloan mentioned Jordan and the Bobcats, who finished 7-59 during the lockout-shortened season and then fired coach Paul Silas. According to Sloan, undertaking such a massive rebuilding job would not prevent him from considering Charlotte. “Obviously, you probably wouldn’t win [a championship] right off the bat,” he said. “But sometimes it’s not all about starting on top.”

Jerry Sloan once coached temperamental star Karl Malone for 15 years. Perhaps his next challenge could be another such guy, Dwight Howard. Sloan said on Tuesday he has interest in the Orlando Magic job, which became open Monday when Stan Van Gundy was fired. “Yes, I think so,” Sloan said. “It would be very intriguing. But they would have to be interested in me.”

There’s obviously no telling at the moment where Jerry Sloan will end up, but it seems like a fairly safe bet that he will be roaming some lucky team’s sideline next season.

And you can be sure that Orlando and Charlotte will have plenty of competition around the League for Sloan’s services.

Charlotte Bobcats champions in 201…never mind.

  • bonk

He’ll b wit the magic in no time. But I guess if they want dwill to pair wit howard that might b a bad choice considering there relationship

  • T-Money

this will probably sound blasphemous to some but jerry sloan’s coaching style seems a bit dated to me. you can no longer coach in the nba like you would in the big east.

  • TTWS3

Well which ever team interviews him, they better f’ing hire him. And Charlotte? Say thank you to him for even acknowledging you.

  • Ismael

Coach Sloan coaching the bobcats will never make sense to me. Why would he want to coach those losers when he can coach better teams?!?!?!

I beleive Sloan could turn the Bobcats around only if Jordan let him coaches his way.

  • whooo!

Sloan could finally win coach of the year if he coached the bobcats… But I think it’d be more intriguing to see him coach the Clippers to take them to the next level that Vinny is incapable of.

  • Riggs

if he has full say on everything (and they aquire anthony davis) would this be a good move for the bobcats. Otherwise, lets this future HOF coach go to a more promising team. Also, jerry sloan smells like BRUT.

  • Salty

Zabbah, you beat me to it.

How many 70 year old coaches (and he looks older than that) would want to come to a rebuilding team, building a team from the ground up… on top of quicksand? He could go to Orlando, take a team that has some talent and keep them good enough to get knocked out of the 2nd round.

  • MAS

If they land the #1 pick in this draft and add one or two more TOP picks in the next draft (2013) maybe they can build OKC style. Mr. Sloan would be a great teacher to the next generation of Bobcats.

  • DJones83

If hes really a HOF coach he could turn the Bobcats into a legit NBA team and not the D League affiliate it currently is..I mean if your great why run from a challenge why not prove that you are great?

  • http://nba.com GP23

Sloan seems more interested in Orlando…. and I thought Patrick Ewing was in the line to coach the Bobcats?

  • FnF

@GP23, is that a line that anyone WANTS to be in the front of?

  • ka$h

The Lakers need to fire Grimace, like yesterday, and get Sloan in there!

  • Salty

I wanna see Sloan in Indiana. He’d be closer to home (Illinois) and Bird was complaining about how his team went soft. Lord knows that no Sloan team is allowed to be soft. He’d have a better chance at a championship with them than with Orlando in my opinion.

Best coaches in the world of basketball:

    1.) Jerry Sloan
    2.) Pop

Nobody even comes close to these two. Forget The Zen Master.

  • Yesse

    Lakers should go after Sloan.

Jerry Sloan has to interview for the BOBCATS? Thats like asking Denzel to read for a part In Gossip Girl.

  • jose

Pacers,Clippers, could get really good if Sloan considered them, but ORL and CHAR definitely would avoid being in the basement of the League with a Sloan on the sideline. . .

  • joey

Jerry Sloan doesnt interview for the Bobcats the Boncats interview for Jerry Sloan.

Jerry Sloan must have some Antoine Walker, LT type financial problems if he’s talking about coming back and coaching these teams. ARE YOU CRAZY?!?!?!

  • http://www.nba.com Red

Screw the Pacers. Join Thib’s coaching staff LOL, jk.

  • MAS

PAUL H kille it! Good 1. I still see the Bobcats getting good in a hurry with two TOP picks in next Drafts. That’s all it takes. One player can make a team good for many years: Duncan= A. Davis= Bobcats good.

PAUL H killed it! Good 1. I still see the Bobcats getting good in a hurry with two TOP picks in next Drafts. That’s all it takes. One player can make a team good for many years: Duncan= A. Davis= Bobcats good.

I’m going to go out on a limb here, but if the Bobcats get Jerry Sloan they will increase there win percentage.

  • Salty

Kholiday: I think Sloan likes the idea of going to a team like that an helping to get them back on their feet. He’s that type of dude. Phil won more rings because he chased the big markets with the best players and would never consider the Bobcats as a legitimate job…Sloan is a different breed.

noooo don’t do it, please don’t do it *drake voice*

MJ: So Jerry, you wouldn’t mind coaching this team for me?
JS: Sure, I can do that.
MJ: Job’s yours. One thing, don’t let your son coach games please. Thanks.

  • robb

JS: I can do that if you don’t let your friends decide the future of this team.

  • Ed

Get rid of Del Negro bring in Sloan

  • @Deknowz

Interview? If they don’t wanna keep being a JOKE they need to hire him on the spot.

bobcats need to not hire a coach that will potentially drop dead.

  • ClydeSays

On the positive side, Sloan has a ton of experience dealing with cheap owners in a small market & getting the maximum out of a under-talented roster. He’d be perfect for Charlotte. Cons are He is old & absolutely old school. Sloan will rip players for blown plays & absolutely humiliate them on the bench. I don’t know if Anthony Davis is ready for that…. He’ll make Tyrus Thomas cry, that’s for sure…

  • Lan

At this stage, he’s probably doing it because he wants to as opposed to need to. So management and players will have to operate that meet some of his expectations or he’ll just walk.

OR staying at home was driving him nuts!!!!

I think it could be a good look. Even though Sloan has mellowed a bit over the years; he’s still a hard-nose coach and can turn any group of boys into men and winners. The challenge is whether he’l have any say over the back-end of the roster with Rod Higgins as GM. Crucial to getting the type of personnel that made Jazz teams so successful. If they can get the unibrow they will already have a proven leader. In any case Charlotte will have to move fast if they want him.

    Come over to Portland, coach.
We would welcome you here with open arms.

I think Sloan and Howard would be a top notch combo. More entertaining than SVG and Shaq. Dwight would cry himself to sleep every night.
As for the Bobcats, Sloan would take then from 7 wins to 20 overnight! Still wouldn’t make them good, though.
