Jeff Van Gundy Accuses the Charlotte Bobcats of Tanking the Season

The Charlotte Bobcats weren’t just awful this past season due to their front-office’s inability to assemble a good roster. They were awful – historically awful, in fact – on purpose. Or so alleges Jeff Van Gundy, who continues to wage war on the very idea of tanking in the NBA. From the Charlotte Observer: “Speaking on a media conference call Tuesday, the former coach of the New York Knicks and Houston Rockets said he believes the organization assembled ‘a very poor roster by design.’ Van Gundy also said he wouldn’t reward bad teams with extra chances in Wednesday night’s draft lottery. ‘I don’t think the players and the coaching staff (tanked). I think the organization did by not getting the best roster’ available, Van Gundy said. ‘You could make the case at any position that they did not have a top-15 player’ at that position in the league. Van Gundy said the Bobcats’ ‘get bad to try to get good’ strategy is common among NBA teams, but their 7-59 finish last season – worst by winning percentage in league history – wasn’t happenstance. ‘What they’re doing, most (front office) people would do. But it’s by design,’ Van Gundy said, adding he would do away with the weighting system that gives the Bobcats the best chance (25 percent) at the top pick in Wednesday’s 8 p.m. lottery. ‘I don’t think you should get extra odds in the lottery for being bad,’ Van Gundy said. ‘To consistently reward bad teams with extra (chances) is bad.’”

What would the NBA do without JVG??

  • http://bebe310.blogspot.com/ anonymous

In other news, Reverend Jesse Jackson is “against” racism.

  • GeraldHenderson

Can Charlotte get the Hornets back? Some dude nobody had ever heard of except for a few black actors in low-budget movies buys a team, names it after himself, picks some of the ugliest colors in pro sports history and promptly runs the team straight into the ground before selling it. Uh, if you don’t know $hit about sports, don’t start a franchise. Pure idiot ha.

  • Kent Jackson

Van Gundy, shut up. You are 100% wrong on this one. Charlotte couldnt tank if they wanted too. They were that bad. Lottery system is the perfect system for tanking, stupid. it doesnt guaranteed u the #1 pick. Hello.

  • ctk

the number one pick dont mean anything ..if the front office dont fix the rest of the roster ….even if they get AnthonyDavis it dont mean anything if the Bobcats dont get anything else with him worth a f*ck

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca/ niQ

The worse team doesn’t even always win the number 1 pick.

  • Matt Park

But it greatly increases your chances. With the current system, the fastest way to become a surefire contender is to tank and hope for the chance to draft a potential superstar. The current system doesn’t work very well. It doesn’t reward teams for doing well, while rewarding teams for doing very bad.

  • JW

To reward teams for doing well would mean the Lakers would have Lebron James, Dwight Howard, John Wall…etc….WTH do you guys want? People complain about everything all the time. The damn system is set up so that if a team does tank it’s still not garunteed the number one pick.

  • http://www.slamonline.com spit hot fiyah

kent you r missing his point, he says they WERE THAT BAD, but only because the front office wanted them to be

Man. Just shut up all ready. He is just as annoying as when he is analyzing.

  • mike

The NBA should do like the NFL and give the #1 pick to the team with the worst record… The LOTTERY is fixed. Watch and see the NBA wants Washington to get the #1 pick so Davis and Wall can play together… JUST WATCH

  • http://twitter.com/samsl33 Sam

jeff van gundy can smd. he needs to hop of talking crap about charlotte. theyre obviously in a re-building mode not this get bad players crap. they got a bunch of new young players and in 2-3 years, watch out for these charlotte bobcats.

  • 23

if the spurs drafted greg oden, would he have still been a bust? just wondering…

  • greg

hed prolly be in the hall of fame after his rookie season if he was on SA

  • Kent Jackson

To spit hot fiya: theres not a a lot of good free agents wanting to go to Charlotte. Front office cant force a good player to sign with them. They doing the best that can. Stephen Jackson didnt want to stay, so u gotta get right rid of him. The Lottery is a perfect way to negate tanking. Doesnt guarantee anything. So let me get this straight,u wanna give the #1 pick (Anthony Davis) to the Oklahoma City Thunder, Miami Heat, Los Angeles Lakers? Think about how stupid that sounds

  • AsadSaleh3

Did someone here actually say no one knew who Bob Johnson was before he bought the franchise except a few black actors? Quite a lot of people knew Bob Johnson, the guy founded BET. Quite an idiotic statement to make.

  • Whitty881

The first pick isnt really the point here guys, if you would read the article youd understand that, hes saying you should’nt be awarded for being a bad basketball team. But since theres no other system in place what can ya do. You think there hasnt been tanks in recent years, Look at OKC and Chicago.

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

There’s a lot of idiocy on this thread. Yes, the Bobcats put together a bad team this year in the hopes of a higher draft pick. And stop calling this team in a “rebuilding phase,” they’ve been doing that since they drafted Okafor. Everybody tries to follow the Thunder model but the fact is, they got lucky. They were gift wrapped some incredible draft picks for three years straight in strong draft classes. We probably won’t see that again. If drafting high guaranteed a Thunder success, the Warriors, Raptors, and Kings would be rocking right now. They’re not, and the Bobcats will continue to struggle as long as they see the draft as their sole savior.

  • Whitty881

@ Kent- hes not saying the top teams should get the top pick, hes saying it the lottery odds should be more even, and not biased based on how bad of a club you were. thats all.

  • http://www.acb.com A l a n

The draft lottery is one of the things that I like the most about the NBA. Whether you pick 1st and take LeBron, or you are last and find Tony Parker.

  • http://thahiphopcorner.com Kevin

The lottery is fine by me. It’s better than the NFL draft system, that promotes tanking more than the NBA. How often has the team with worst record won the NBA lottery btw?

  • http://www.google.com/news BETCATS

I don’t understand Van Gundy’s point. This team was rebuilding. Injuries, a lack of effort from the players, and the inability of Paul Silas led to the worst season ever. But it was a short season thanks to the lockout. If you want to rebuild (aka maybe 1-3 of these guys will still be on the Bobcats in 5 years) you might as well rebuild. #YOLO

  • RedRum

I agree tanking is bad and it is not fair. But how can you deter tanking? The lottery is there to give chances to bad teams and instill parity. NFL teams do it as well. One way would be to have a play-out between the lottary teams, they all play each other twice (while playoffs are going on) and teams rank based on win pct. But still the idea behind of the lottery (give bad teams a chance) would be negated. This is my problem with JVG and all the critics. Cool, you don’t like tanking. But on the same time you like parity and new upcoming teams from small markets (he raves about OKC). How do you go about it then JVG? stop whinging, it cost you jobs (same with your brother)

  • bike

Let’s suppose that it could be proved that a team did indeed ‘tank’. Should they be punished? If so, how?

  • JW

Charlotte Blew up the team in order to get more cap room and high picks. I dont see anything wrong with this. Id rather see an NBA where more teams have a chance to win then seeing Boston, the Lakers,Miami etc… evey single year. Id rather see more strong teams reagardless of how big or small the market is. I wish the whole leauge was more like the Pistons a few years back that had a strong “Team” but no superstars. Just having a couple of teams with all the superstars is messing the whole entire leauge up….In my opinion

  • bdogg

as long as mj takes anthony davis they will be fine..if he pulls another crummy brown…this franchise should fold..sorry..it is business. you can not hack it..get out!

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

More cap room? What Cap Room did they surrender? They took in cap (Corey Maggette)…..they gave an extension to Tyrus freaking Thomas which still has $33,388,430.00 left running through 2014-15. What they are doing is neither tanking nor clearing cap space. They are poorly run. It’s that simple. Jordan doesn’t know what in the F*CK he is doing. There is no reason to over-analyze it.

  • StevenqUrkle

I agree with Gerald, no one knew who that guy was. Yes he founded BET, not that hard to do buddy. Any of us could have done that. BET?? Come on man, that isn’t even a legit channel, its like QVC or the cooking channel. BET tried to rival MTV and VH1, which are about totally ridiculous these days, and it still can not keep up. Point is, dude should have never owned any type of professional sports franchise. He drove BET into the ground and drove the BETcats into the ground.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Nick Tha Quick

    ^^^Them be some fightin words.

  • Dungeon Family

@StevenqUrkle Bobcats went to the Playoffs under Bob Johnson

But I see you on your KKK ish today

  • l2ising Phoenix

    Lol @ Stevenqurkle,

  • MikeC.

We can stop talking about Bob Johnson. He’s a past owner. His BET credentials are irrelevant. I get what JVG is saying, I just wish those who criticize would offer solutions.

  • StevenqUrkle

@ Dungeon Family – haha man I wish real fishing were that easy. Caught you hook, line and sinker. With my white hood on

  • Deedre

@GeraldHenderson The Bobcats have the ugliest colors in sports history? Lol since when is orange and blue ugly? If that’s the case they have a lot of ties at last place in that list. Apparently you haven’t seen the Timberwolves, Bucks, and Jaguars colors. I know I’m leaving some out.

  • http://www.slamonline.com keep it real

Jvg and svg are slimy filth.

  • Dre Baller

remember the last time MJ had the no. 1 pick at his disposal? how’d that go?

  • http://Somethingsomething. Ugh

I’d rather take MJ as my GM over anyone posting in this thread, that’s for sure.

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

MJ would take Tyler Zeller with the #1 pick…

  • http://www.slamonline.com Primoz Brezec

hell yes the bobcats have the worst colors, they look like a D3 college team with a bad mascot…come on.. a bobcat?? i live in NC and i know they had some sort of contest to name the team, but bj named it after himself. one of the options was the “Charlotte Flight”. that woulda been sooooo much better.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

A few weeks ago during a game JVG mentioned an idea that I kinda agree with, expanded the chances of teams with a chance to win the lottery to not just non playoff teams, but also those without home court advantage in the playoffs. Teams like Indiana and Denver could really benefit.. That way if a team is good enough to make the playoffs, hell, they might still win that 1 guy to push them into contention..

  • Lan

    ^that’s some ideas to consider.

On the team tanking, I thought that was always the plan. Just Another team following the Clippers model (Pre-Chris Paul).

  • http://www.starting5.com.au NM30

  • fitzy

what if the team that was the 9th seed had the highest odds to win the lottery. That way it could push them into contention? just an idea I’ve been having lately. It also motivates teams near the basement to not tank.

  • T-Money

    eff the van gundys.

  • Justin

@Primoz – YEP! Charlotte (or Carolina) Flight would have been the best name and most of us Carolinians think so. I’m going to see if I can make up some T-shirts and sell them outside of Time Warner Cable Arena. With the state’s history of aviation, MJ, (and the fact that David Thompson and Dominique Wilkins are from NC too), Flight only makes sense. Bobcats. Ha what a dumb joke!

  • JW

Bobcats have the worst colors????Ummm what colors do the NewYork Knicks have…Oh yeah…Blue and Orange….close to the same exact colors…smh..

  • Baller24

This is the NBA JVG no team tries 2 fail on purpose they want 2 win a championchip so really this guy was on drugs when he said that
