Joe Johnson Unhappy With Number of Shots in Game 4

by Marcel Mutoni @marcel_mutoni

In taking a commanding 3-1 series lead this past Sunday, the Boston Celtics humiliated the Atlanta Hawks, beating them by 22 points. Joe Johnson was not a happy man after the game, and he wasn’t just irked by the final score.

Johnson was unhappy with the amount of touches he got in Game 4, and it’s clear that he needs to play a much larger role in the offense with the Hawks now facing elimination.

From the AJC:

Johnson took just eight shots in the 101-79 loss to the Celtics, who are up 3-1 in the best-of-seven series heading into Game 5 Tuesday at Philips Arena. “I don’t think they are doing anything different defensively on me,” Johnson said. “I think it’s just basically getting an opportunity to touch the ball. That’s it.” When asked if he was not happy with his touches, Johnson answered with a simple, but emphatic, “No.”

“We run a lot of things through [Johnson],” head coach Larry Drew said following a team meeting Monday. “He’s got to be more aggressive in working to get his shots and we have to be mindful when he hasn’t had a shot in one or two trips down the floor, we’ve got to get him the ball.” Drew credited the Celtics’ defensive game plan against Johnson. While Paul Pierce has drawn the bulk of the assignment, the Celtics have also used double-teams, switches and crowding on the Hawks’ all-star to make things difficult. The Hawks have also failed in their offense, according to Drew. “Just watching the film in flying back [Sunday] night, there were a number of situations where we could have just made one extra pass and the extra pass would have been to him,” Drew said. “We’ve just got to be a little bit more mindful to make sure he is getting touches.”

Eight shot attempts for the team’s best player obviously isn’t going to get it done, but the onus is on both Joe Johnson and the Hawks’ coaching staff to correct this, and to do so immediately.

Game 5 takes place tonight in Atlanta.

“Eight shot attempts for the team’s best player obviously isn’t going to get it done.” No, Joe Johnson as your best player obviously isn’t going to get it done.

their offense is terrible, just like it was under woodson. iso ball al the time, and making matters worse is that everyone is glued to the floor when it happens instead of cutting or setting back picks. nice to see horford back though

  • Heals

Who was stopping him from taking more shots in Gm3? He gave up the ball, heck even Smoove and Horford were more aggressive despite their physical limitations. Mr. All-underated no more, JoeJohnson is who we thought he was (que DennisGreen press conference clip)…

  • Bawse

Joe Johnson should be mad at himself for not having any heart or being a leader. Jamaal Crawford made up for his limitations and most people did not recognize it!

  • Mack

Joe Johnson should not be a Hawk next season, they need to move him ASAP, he’s holding them back with his isolation jumpshots and his contract is insane… A real leader is what Atlanta needs, Johnson doesn’t fit that role as well as everyone would like to think

This team has yet to progress over the last 3-4 seasons. Either a first round loss or a second round loss.

Everyone knows that JJ wasnt worth his contract.

  • Ill Smith

Everybody knows JJ doesn’t show up during the playoffs.

When the guy the offense is ran through complains about not getting enough shots, you know where that team is headed! I see why Rondo thought they already won the series!

  • smoove

he could of taken 25 shots..doesnt matter celts were shooting at 63% at one point..you couldnt beat the bobcats if they were shooting that well.

Everybody knows JJ Redick is perhaps the best shooter in basketball history.

You should shoot more JJ. Quit trying to look smooth all the time and try and win a game for your team you a-hole.

  • bike

Everybody knows that JJ doesn’t like to be crowded or have to work for his shot.

“Eight shot attempts for the team’s best player obviously isn’t going to get it done.” No, Joe Johnson as your best player obviously isn’t going to get it done………. Understatement of the year

great talk on the BS Report with Bill Simmons and Rembert Browne about Joe Johnsons playoff performance and what he means to the city of Atlanta. Listen here http://bit.ly/JdObf6

  • Ldub

1 of 2 things should have happened. Either he should have put up more shots….OOOORRRR he should have made his impact on the game in another way. I consider JJ to be good all around player. He doesnt do anything great, but he doesnt have many flaws either. So he should be able to do a little bit of everything. And if he isnt getting the touches he requests or feels he should…then step it up on defense, grab more boards, be more vocal. Its basketball people.

Entire City of Atlanta Unhappy With Number Of Digits In Joe’s Contract

  • Your Friendly Neighborhood Dopeman

Honestly, it was out of his control. I watched the game and the C’s weren’t allowing anything.

Borned and raised in ATL. I really hate that the Hawks gave that clown $124 million. Every time the Hawks get close to elimination in the playoffs he want to start crying back he doesn’t have enough help. He wants better help he need to give back some of that $124 million. Other than that he need to shut up and play. They need to use the amnesty clause on him like that Orlando did with Gilbert Arenas. He still had like 3-4yrs and $80 million plus lefted on his contract when they used the amnesty clause on him.

While his contract will certainly come to weigh down the hawks in the future i would say that comparing Joe Johnson to Gil is a bit harsh. Not his fault he came onto the market when LBJ and D-Wade were going to get all flirty with the league.
