NBA Announces 2011-12 All-Defensive Teams

The NBA has announced that 2011-2012 All-Defensive team. Tyson Chandler, the ’11-12 Defensive Player of the Year, did not earn First Team honors. (If this confuses you, you’re not the only one.) Via a release from the NBA: “Miami Heat forward LeBron James, winner of the 2011-12 Kia NBA Most Valuable Player Award, headlines the NBA All-Defensive First Team, the NBA announced today. James totaled 53 points overall, including 24 First Team votes. He was the lone player to top 50 points. Joining James on the NBA All-Defensive First Team are forward Serge Ibaka of the Oklahoma City Thunder (47 points), guards Chris Paul of the Los Angeles Clippers (35 points) and Tony Allen of the Memphis Grizzlies (33 points), and center Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic (41 points). Ibaka and Allen earn First Team honors for the first time; Allen was an NBA All-Defensive Second Team selection last season.”Here’s the full breakdown of the first and second teams:

How does defensive player of the year only get second team ? I’m utterly baffled.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

    what’a joke.

  • todddd

whenever i watch kobe play d he’s usually standing up

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

The coaches vote for all-nba teams. The media votes for single player awards.
    .
The Coaches also don’t watch other teams play. Although I do agree with them that Howard was a better defender than Tyson.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

So a cat that hasn’t played consistent defense since the 08 season makes it over Shrumpet, ABradley, JHolliday, Iggy and SMarion?

  • Ill Smith

The fact that Kobe saw any votes let alone made the 2nd team ahead of DWade is more shocking than the DPOY not making the 1st team.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

It’s cool that Tony Allen got First Team.

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

Can we all agree that coaches can be complete morons? Kobe does not play defense. And the DPOY gets 2nd team. Utterly, laughably pathetic. Get your ish together NBA, this is embarrassing.

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

Put it this way, theres 9 coaches who think Tony Allen didn’t deserve either team. That’s pathetic.

  • 23

Does anyone(other than the media) actually believe Tyson Chandler is a more valuable defender than Dwight Howard??!??

  • IamYOU

Now Lebron’s on top of NBA All-Defensive First Team and Tyson Chandler who won dpoty is on NBA All-Defensive Second Team.. hmmm(scrathes beard) This is Absurd!

  • jayrose

I can honestly say the Ibaka earned first team honors with out a doubt.

  • http://www.nba.com Gman

how the hell did Kobe get it over Dwade….

  • http://www.borntocompete.com Money$hot

DPOY on all defensive second team is an oxymoron

  • Heals

Any chance we see these teams run a 2-game set on Fri and Sat night? Please, remember that whole lockout thing, I promise not to say another word about it or Stern. Promise…

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

(imo) this is how it should have been
. (1st Team) Tony Allen – Andre Iguodala – LeBron James – Kevin Garnett – Dwight Howard
. (2nd Team) Avery Bradley – Jrue Holiday – Shawn Marion – Serge Ibaka – Tyson Chandler

  • IamYOU

@Caboose Kobe does play defense just not good enough to be part of the defensive team.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

No, Kobe really doesn’t play much defense. At all.

  • Kinetik

    no thabo?

  • http://www.barry.edu/hrdedd/default.htm Jpain

surprised they chose Ibaka over Chandler. He had a lot more help with Perkins wearing the bigs down than Chandler did with AAAhmare and Melo.

  • IamYOU

    I think it should be
(1st team) Lebron James, Tony Allen, Dwight Howard, Serge Ibaka, Andre Iguodla

(2nd team) Rajon Rondo, Dwyane Wade, Luol Deng, Josh Smith, Tyson Chandler

this is my own opinion tho.

  • Bo

If Igoudala isn’t on the list, the list is bunk.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

nbk, so you don’t think Shrumpet should be on that list? I know there are only a few spots open for guards but the guy was a top-5 perimeter defender from Gm1 to Gm66.

  • Jono

Why is Kobe on this team? DWade/Afflalo both do a much better job!

  • elmaar

kobe hasn’t been able playing both sides of the court since those 2008 finals when PP had the best of him
and since then he shouldn’t have been on any first defensive teams, period
tyson chandler on 2nd team is just hilarious
chris paul on first team is a suspect as well
somehow I believe these votes are partly handed on the potential to turn it on and not on consistency
and where is Westbrook? Although he gambles sometimes I really thought he was a great on the ball defender as well
    westbrook>paul

  • Tariq

Why do I keep seeing these Wade over Kobe on defense are you kidding me. You mean the same man that consistently leaves wide open shooters and has not shut down a single star player at any point should be on 1st or 2nd team miss me with that nonsense.

  • Audie

Kobe?.. no. Tony Allen shouldnt be a first teamer and Tyson deserves 2nd team. if dwight was healthy at the end he would of have the DPOY.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Taylor, it was between him and Holiday. Holiday played 65 games, Shumpert played 59. Which was the deciding factor, that’s how close it was imo

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Avery Bradley was the 2nd best defensive guard in the league once he got minutes. I realize he wasn’t really playing much the 1st half the season, but I couldn’t ignore how great he was. Just like Tony Allen last year.

  • Tariq

I can see making the argument for Avery Bradley or Afflalo or even Shumpert but Wade no way. He plays the same defense as Allen Iverson constantly leaving his defensive responsibilities to try to make a steal or block sometimes it works most times it back fires his defense is not on that caliber.

  • http://nba.com/celtics lights out

cosign nbk’s team. i read on espn that Boozer got a vote. somebody was having fun.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Oh and if anyone checks the voting, Iguodala actually did receive more all-defense points then Kobe. But Kobe had 7 1st Team Votes!!!! (wtf, for real, 7 coaches are THAT unaware of what’s going on???) which gave him the edge apparently.

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca/ niQ

    Redonc. What a joke.

  • ALD

why did tyson win the def player of the year if he can’t make the 1st team… Dwight is a better defender but this just shows a contridiction.

  • alex

    MWP Ron Artest

  • http://slamonline best 7th man

A complete travesty to leave out metta, always covers the best opposing player…

  • http://abcnews.com charliewinning

For the umpteenth year, the coaches prove that their voting isn’t any less of a joke than fan voting for All-Star teams. Kobe’s presence on there has to be a joke.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Red

@Nbk you mean to tell me you’d put Andre Iggy over Luol Deng who consistently shut Andre down throughout the series? I got Deng over Iggy easily.

  • http://espn.go.com/blog/truehoop/post/_/id/3183/tex-winter-compares-kobe-bryant-and-michael-jordan Allenp

Just because he shut down Iggy doesn’t mean he’s a better defender. That’s bad logic Red.

  • http://nba.com GP23

Luol Deng is far greater than Iggy at Defense.

  • thunderfan35

way to go serge “Iblocka” Ibaka. But where is james harden or even thabo. Isn’t what he did against kobe good enough?? Next year you will see at least three thunder players on that list

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Iggy is not a good offensively player (scoring wise) to begin with and using such a small sample size to rank players bordelines on stupidity. In terms of perimeter defenders, it’s TAllen, LeBron then Iggy.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

If you think Deng is superior to Iguodala on defense then you plainly just didn’t pay attention this season.
    .
And it’s not worth arguing. Iguodala was flat out a monster on defense. Deng didn’t hold a candle to him this year. And that’s not me saying Deng isn’t a very good defender, because he is. But Iguodala was simply brilliant.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

You mean, Kobe, Tony Allen, LeBron, then Iggy right Taylor?
LMAO… WTH NBA… try and stay somewhat legitimate would ya?…
I got Iggy over Deng defensively, but it’s close(ish).

  • Da-Meat-Hook

Who’s your All Worst-Defensive team by position??

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Lake, I actually meant Nash, Fisher then Kobe.

  • MeloMan15

Not tryna be a homer… But Shumpert really desrved it more than Kobe. I guess him being a rookie effected voting

  • Damien

Carmelo Anthony should have been the leading vote getter for the way he shut down the high scoring Mike D’Antoni offense all season.

  • MikeC.

People can say what they want about Chandler being DPOY, that’s a fun debate. However, it’s silly that he’s DPOY and not 1st-Team all D. Silly says I.

  • Thee SwissArmyKnife

Shawn Marion gets no love smh…I was watching a game where they said he holds his man to 34% fg shooting on the season that’s unheard of I don’t get how he’s always left off this list.
