Paul Pierce: Celtics’ Game 2 Loss ‘Demoralizing’

by Marcel Mutoni @marcel_mutoni

The Boston Celtics threw their best punch at the Miami Heat last night, and in the end, it simply wasn’t enough.

The Heat survived a legendary performance from Rajon Rondo (44 points, 10 assists, 8 rebounds), solid contributions from Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce, and yes, benefitted from the referees’ whistles (Miami took 47 free throws, to Boston’s 29.)

Everyone on the Boston side of the argument was enraged, but Paul Pierce put it best when he called the overtime loss in Game 2 “demoralizing.”

From Yahoo! Sports:

The general manager of the Boston Celtics was trying to understand how LeBron James could get to the free-throw line those 24 times, and so Danny Ainge stood in the hallway recreating a clear-path foul call to the NBA’s vice president of referee operations, Joe Borgia. Ainge slid his feet, and tried to show how the Celtics defender had reached around to the Miami Heat star, how they were far too close to the rim for that call. “How?” Ainge asked him.

Ainge was persistent, polite and Borgia finally relented that he’d watch the film of the Heat’s 115-111 Game 2 overtime victory. “I’m sure we missed five or six calls somewhere,” Borgia said.

The Celtics were livid with the officials, yes, but mostly they were so, so angry with themselves. All those second and third chances they gave the Heat, when they needed a defensive rebound, a loose ball. “Demoralizing,” Paul Pierce said.

Celtics head coach Doc Rivers did the only thing he could following the crushing defeat — he told his team to suck it up, move on, and try to salvage this series in Games 3 and 4 back home in Beantown.

That sounds a whole lot easier said than done.

  • http://hpusports.com 2 chainz

Simon Caine, wade stinks? Don’t hate on greatness. Man has a ring and a finals MVP. Don’t act like Garnett doesn’t cheap shot people all the time and tries to act like he didn’t do anything.

  • http://www.crappyrappers.com Simon Caine

2 Chainz, that was 6 years ago. Before Lebron came, it was routine 1st and 2nd round exits and that 17-win season. That ring came with Shaq in the last year of his prime and 3 other HOF players. His game is overrated. KG is the king of cheap shots, but Wade gets his in too. Lebron gets called out for showboating and taunting but D-Wade is worse in my opinion.

  • Ldub

^hence the tech he got for elbowing JJ! lol then get the audacity to hold his hands straight up!

  • Ldub

Simone…what point are you making?…what does Lebron and Wade have to do anything with Oneal and Wade? Overrated? Do you even watch basketball? Give me 5 people in the L that can do what Wade can. Outside of Kobe, Lebron, Rose and maybe westbrook….you arent going to find another player like him. Please make accurate statements and not just biased opinions! And the “kick” didnt appear to be intentionally…like it was a “cheap shot”! If youre in the air and you get hit up top…your bottom half goes from under you. If Garnett didnt push his elbow…he probably wouldnt have gotten kicked in the leg. And since we are talking about cheap shots. Define cheap? (INSERT PICTURE OF KEVIN GARNETT)!

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Man that 15 win Miami team was horrible. And Wade missed 31 games. Here are the guys who played the most games….in order.
    .
    . Ricky Davis – 82
    . Mark Blount – 69
    . Jason Williams – 67
    . Chris Quinn – 60
    . Daquan Cook – 59
    . Dwyane Wade – 51

    -
Now please, use your brain and explain how a team that is THAT healthy is supposed to be competitive?
    .
And then look at Dwyane Wade’s numbers and stats (and wins on a healthy team….like the 2009-10 Heat who was basically a D-League – go ahead and look – team and he still managed to win 47 games)
    .
The dude is arguably the best 2 on earth. And without a logical argument to say otherwise top 2 no question.

  • Greg

Celtic fans cant moan, KG has used up any good will the celts have with the refs with all his cheap shots that he has gotten away with. Stop complaining and recognise that your ship has sailed…

  • z

Not gonna lie it’s really easy to come from 15 down with help. Coming back from 15 with no help is very very hard to do. The refs these first two games have been anything but consistent. The Tech calls in the first game and the T on Garnett was weak. If Garnett get’s the Tech then Lebron’s shove in game one should have been one. The refs have taken any edge the Celtics have tried to create and squandered it. The no call, the hussle play that was no foul at all, the kick from Wade, the sixth foul on Pierce when he clearly jumped straight up, and the ticky tack fouls early on Stietsma that were far from fouls. There was a reason the fouls were so one sided and the NBA has made it apparent that they want the Heat in the finals. Having two seperate crews blow huge calls has proven just that.

  • http://www.crappyrappers.com Simon Caine

lol, you want me to name just 5 people who can put their head down, barrel into people, miss the layup, and look at the referee afterward? Below average passer, average mid-range jump shooter, below average 3-pt shooter, good finisher, good help defender. Nothing more, nothing less. Is he tough? Sure, absolutely he is. NOT a top 10 SG of all-time, IMO though. As far as cheap, he broke Kobe’s nose in an all-star game because he couldn’t guard him. He chased Darren Collison down on a fast break and pushed him in the back because he, again, was angry.

Top 2 player on earth? LOL. Kobe, LBJ, KD, D-Howard, D-Rose, D-Will, CP3…

I don’t care who was on that team, superstars should be good for at least 20 wins in one season. Lebron won 60 with subpar talent.

  • http://www.crappyrappers.com Simon Caine

Without a top-tier superstar, Wade wasn’t getting anywhere. Just facts.

  • everything

who is your top 10 SGs of all time Simon Caine?

  • everything

    *are

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Mark Blount is the guy that is ‘pretty good’ at your local Y.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    ^And Kobe was?

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

    Eh?

  • http://www.nyill.wordpress.com O

Wade was karate choppin Rondo and Lu Kangin’ KG on the way to the rim and he doesnt get called for those fouls? That really was demoralizing for the Celtics. At that point they shoulda known – like everyone one else watching – that they werent leaving Miami with a win. 8 against 5 are never good odds on the basketball court…

  • R32

Celtic fans and Heat haters can complain and breakdown every single call/non-call but in the end, Boston didn’t get it done (even with all the missed Miami free throws!)

  • Ldub

All that is so funny to me. Let me break down everything you just said and correct you with accuracy! Barrel into people? Incorrect…Dwade has one of the best “eurosteps” in the game today! Ill give you his mid range jumper has decreased over the years…but that is because he has gone back to slashing. Hence the FT attempts increasing. If you know anything about basketball, you’d know that if you dont do something for a while, you cant jump back into it with good consistency. Wade was never a good 3pt shooter…matter of fact he wasnt a shooter at all when he came into the L. PURE SLASHER! Great finisher, good defender (I believe he is tops in steals and blocks for all guards). Ill give u the DC chase down shot, but to say he broke Kobe’s nose as a cheap shot because he “couldnt guard him” is wrong. Pump fake, wade jumped, go up, wade comes down. Nothing malicious or cheap about it. And yes top 2! KOBE then Wade. Who else would you put above Wade at the SG position? And your last statement clearly shows your lack of intelligence for the game of basketball. Its a team sport. And Lebron had decent enough role players around him. Gibson and D. Jones were some of the best 3pt marksmen in the L that year. Varajao was like Joakim Noah. Anthony Parker who was a good defender. Wasnt the same for Wade with a roster full of injured, over the hill, past their prime(garbage players). Be real. You can hate wade or dislike him all you want. Even as a fan, I understand his faults and areas where improvement is needed. Youre blinded by your total dislike for him!

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Man this 8 on 5 sh*t is pathetic. Every person that brings it up sounds like a b*tch. Refs don’t miss shots. Refs haven’t decided a single game this post season. They suck, but they have always sucked. And none of you (O especially) would have said a damn thing if your team won.

  • Da-Meat-Hook

Wade hits Rondo’s head and it doesn’t get called. Can’t argue with that. But people are acting like 30 seconds earlier, Rondo wrapping both of his arms around Lebron’s bicep for a jump ball didn’t happen! C’mon now, the refs didn’t decide either of these games!

  • O

nbk, you know damn well even if C’s won, I STILL would’ve pointed that out, b. Minimal contact on a Heat player and they’re at the line. Excessive contact on a C player and it’s good defense? PGeeeeeeeeeeet the f*ck outta here, dunn! OK, maybe it’s not 8 on 5, but 6 or 7 on 5 isn’t THAT much better.

  • http://hpusports.com 2 chainz

Simon Caine, yeah he had shaq in 06.. But did shaq really do that much for them to beat the mavericks? Wade averaged 34 a game in that series if I’m not mistaken

  • bull22

anyone who thinks this is a completely honest game needs to stop smoking weed. @eboy i see your point but it goes both ways, if you can recall what i said last year that if the heat won the free throw contest in the finals they would be champions and incredibly they did not, and would like to know what the heat did to personally offend david stern because the mavericks were allowed to play basketball. an fbi official even said that if an referee has money on the game he could have an influence on the outcome. but that being said the celtics did have their chances.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

O, go back and look at the fouls called. Aside from Pierce’s 6th, the rest of the fouls were pretty much fine. Perce’s 6th was a blatantly terrible call. But that didn’t decide the game, and the refs missed plenty for both teams. And if New York beat Miami in the same fashion, you wouldn’t have said a damn word. Don’t front like you are less emotional then you really are. Sh*ts obvious.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I honestly knew people were going to go hard on this ref thing.
I thought it was obvious why Miami got so many calls, and the Celts got quite a few calls themselves when they DROVE TO THE HOLE.
And Pierce’s arms didn’t say vertical on that Wade foul that was his sixth. Contact was created, he bent his arms, and the foul was called. He didn’t hit him on the arms or anything, but the body contact was there and the only way you get away with that consistently is if you are perfectly vertical with your arms.
And are we going to pretend that Rondo didn’t foul LeBron on that jump ball he created?
Or that Haslem didn’t get fouled on that crazy hookshot he hit in the lane off glass?
Besides Rondo getting slapped in the face and not getting a call, that calls weren’t even that horrible. But the whistle blew for the Heat more often, mainly because they went to the rack.

  • Ldub

I think people fail to realize how difficult it is to make calls in the blink of an eye. Yes they are trained to be the best refs in the game at any level, but even still, they are human. And regardless of how many years you have under your belt, you arent going to see every call. Especially when you have players blazing up n down the court like Rondo and Wade. Stop with the nonsense about the calls. The C’s were at the line just as much as the Heat in the first half, and like i said earlier…they stopped getting to the cup. Are the refs going to call a perfect game? NO, that will never happen. And as a fan of either team, people are going to always nitpick the refs decisions as an excuse for a loss. Bottom line is (just like many have said)…C’s were up by 15? With the same calls all these ppl have been b*tching and complaining about. Heat got aggressive and started attacking the paint! move on..game 3 tomorrow!

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

It is easier for people to blame the officials when things don’t go favorably for the favorite team. I could literally go back to every playoff game this season and point out 10-15 questionable calls. It’s just how the NBA has been, is and always will be. Anyone who has played professional ball at any level knows that there’s damn near a foul on every play down the court.

  • http://hoopspeak.com/2012/05/enough-about-lebron-and-his-fouls/ nbk

Speaking of which, where are the conspiracy theorists on why San Antonio so rarely gets whistled? If the presumption is that “lack of fouls” equals “ref favoritism” then that team would be a logical place to direct such illogic. Also, Andre Iguodala–another great wing defender–averages 1.5 fouls per contest. Are we assuming that the fix is in for Iggy and his ratings-galvanizing troupe of Sixer superstars?

Wade is a shell of the player he was even a year ago – you can see James taking the last shots, and constantly missing, is killing him. He’s got no vibe out there, looks lost half of the time.

nbk, i’m one of the REALEST and non-delusional Knicks fans around. If the refs were handing the Knicks games like this I would’ve been the first to say, “Big ups to the refs and the Angel of Stern for giving the Knicks the Miami treatment.” Let’s keep it real, it’s not just the foul calls it’s the non-calls that hurt the C’s. The refs let Miami get away with throwing bows, so Wade stepped it up a notch and started clotheslining (exaggerating) and jump kicking the opposition. Don’t get mad at nuccas like me for pointing out the obvious. Embrace this ish. Miami is GUARANTEED to make it to the Finals. Celebrate, fools! It’s going to be a great Finals. Two teams (Spurs) who never get called for fouls.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

The one question I have for all those in the “NBA favors MIA” camp is where was all that favoritism during the Finals last year? That was the perfect opportunity for Stern to “rig” that series and gift MIA the championship.

  • hatersrfunny

Blaming the officials for losing is like saying if rondo plays sensational we will win. Straight up fiction. Go heat. Hey I respect the cs for their effort but only delusional peeps think they winning

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

O, clearly you are pretty delusional. Maybe not about how good the Knicks are, because that would make you delusional and stupid. But you sure don’t have a very firm grasp on what’s realistically happening with the refs. And haven’t since game 1 against the Knicks. And complaining about the refs has been the only thing you comment about recently anyway.
    .
The refs and the league aren’t helping the Heat. There are bad calls in every game. The Heat are as guaranteed to make it too the finals as anyone else is. Plain and simple.

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

The calls were kinda bad last night, but that doesn’t give the Celtics ay excuse when Rondo was actually shooting the ball well and they got up 15 on Miami just to blow it.

  • Ldub

@O….do u really believe everything you just wrote? Please go back and watch the game again. Just like James was getting calls, so was Rondo. You can knitpick the calls all day…it doesnt knock the fact the the C’s stopped being as aggressive. Rondo had 22? points at half time….half of them from the FT line? And he was knocking down jumpers like Al Bundy would knock back a brewsky. They did nothing in the 3rd. No one was driving, Rondo wasnt shooting, it was a lack of aggression in the 2nd half. Yes the fouls were in favor of the Heat…but that isnt because they are the Heat. That is because Wade and James kept driving to the paint. There is no “special treatment”. There are plenty of calls that can be argued the the Heat dont get. SO GTFOH with all that nonsense!

  • O

Damn, y’all dudes coming down on me HARD (pause). I’m pathetic, stupid, delusional – it’s whatever, man. And nbk, what’d you mean when you said to stop frontin’ like i’m less emotional than I really am? You want me to start wilding on the Heat and Heat fans with crazy rants? That sh*t’s for the birds, kid, and you know that ain’t never been my style. I’m just stating the obvious after certain games. I ain’t even say ish about game 1, but last night was just wow. And y’all get y’all panties in a bunch and start pouting cause y’all know its true. Miami gets away with ish cause they got that “best defensive team in the league” label. Yeah, C’s blew it in the 3rd by stopping the attack, but if you SERIOUSLY don’t believe the ref calls ain’t been helping the Heat then pass the piff cause the weekend’s almost here and we’ll just have to agree to disagree. After the Finals Wade should get in on some Ultimate Fighting cause it looks like that’s what he’s practicing for out on the court. Watch him put Rondo in a submission hold in the paint and only get a defensive 3 second violation… on Rondo

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I mean, stop acting like the reffing is so bad you are right by complaining ad nauseum it’s only obvious to you, a Knicks fan, who was blaming the refs for a loss in game 1 against the Heat, a game the Knicks lost by 33….because it was “8 on 5″ which has been the only thing you comment about since. You know what’s for the birds? Complaining about the same thing every time you feel like commenting.

  • T-Money

so are people just talking or they genuinely believe that the fix is in? i mean, you can do that if that’s your thing but that probably means that you have bigger problems to worry about.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

NBK is feeling extra testy today.
I thought the Celtics would get a few quick fouls on the Heat early in the quarter and then stop being aggressive. At one point I was wondering if the HEat could play defense without fouling.
But, if Bron is guarding Pierce, you won’t get a lot of fouls there because Bron avoids fouls better than anyone in the League.
KG could get fouls if he posted up deed (Fighting for post position almost always generates fouls on the defense. It’s a rule.)
Ray Allen doesn’t drive and Pietrus rarely drives. Bass couldn’t stay on the floor because he was killing them defensively and not doing enough offensively.
Outside of Rondo, who shot 10 free throws in the first half, who really should have been drawing fouls and how? How was initiating contact and not getting the whistle.
And the Celts, particularly Dooling and Pietrus, were just reaching and grabbing inside of playing solid defense. It was terrible at time. Pietrus fouled a jump shooter at least three times. Dooling gave up at least three And 1s because of bad fouls.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Pietrus guards LeBron like he still has Dwight waiting for him at the rim. If the opposing team is getting in the lane with the ball on almost every possession your team will be in foul trouble. The reason the Heat shoot more free throws than the Celtics is blatantly obvious. And it has NOTHING to do with the refs. I hate people blaming teams winning or losing on referee’s. Even when the refs do fix games, they likely aren’t affecting the outcome, but the spread. Except a few occasions that everyone knows about. But even then, refs don’t miss shots or turn the ball over. They call fouls. And if they are blatantly bad it will be highlighted and talked about, it’s not like Stern controls the bloggers.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Lots of typos, sorry about that folks. It’s been a long day.
And I said the same thing about Pietrus after Game One.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

oh well then, cosign your sentiments.
    .
I would like to know why that hasn’t been corrected? Why are you crowding LeBron without a rim protector? (i realize they have rim protection, but not, stop LeBron type of protection). Why is any player crowding LeBron at all, the way to beat him is to make him a jump shooter, that’s common knowledge right?

  • Ldub

cosign nbk. Give bron the jumper which in turn eliminates his drive effectiveness. No drive…no easy buckets, potential and ones, or his ability to kick it out to a an open teammate! Oddly enuff C’s did this in the first half to some degree. PP did play up on him pretty hard trying to show their renewed “toughness” but when youre not a defensive player…you cant keep that up for 48 minutes against anyone…especially lbj…and still be effective on the offensive end.

  • surety

47 free-throws? This is just one of the reasons why the NBA is difficult to watch now. Miami runs absolutely no offense, yet James and Wade seem to get the benefit of every whistle every night. Compound that with the fact that the rules have already been changed to make these guys difficult to guard. It just seems like the NBA has gone away from what sports should be about – fair competition. Oh well, thank God for the Spurs.

  • Heals

Do you O, anytime a NYK’s fan is sticking up for me C’s I gotta show some love back…

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Boston got three stops on Miami’s final 16 possessions, and one of those “stops” came when LeBron missed two free throws.
    .
And people complaining about free throw discrepancy and then bringing up the Spurs (who have the basically the same discrepancy as the Heat) – for comparisons sakes, they shoot .195 Free Throws per possession and give up .168, while the Heat shoot .237 and give up .201 – is hilarious. That’s like saying, “well I would like to say, blatantly, i don’t know what i’m talking about”

  • MUBWAR

anthony parker and good defender on the same sentence? as a raptors fan i don’t know how to feel about ldub latest comments.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Celtics can’t beat the Refs too, look at game 1, there was some crazy calls too. Lebron got alot of ticky tat calls go his way, especially when Pietrus jumped up in air and a littler brush on Bron and its a foul. Rondo gets slapped in the face, no call. The Refs in the first qtr, got rid of one of Boston’s bigs with four foul calls against him. This series has been a joke, if anyone thinks otherwise, you don’t know basketball, this is reminding me of Wade’s NBA REF Finals. BOOK IT!!

  • http://slamonline.com 19821982

AllenP on the $, if the C’s can down a few red bulls before the game and actually drive to the hoop a few more times, they’d get more foul shots too. Bron and Wade are slashers by nature. Rondo and Garnett are taking jumpers on purpose, because the Heat are giving them daylight. And even then, Rondo still took it inside, and he got calls (except the Wade foul).
