Post Up: Miami, OKC Up 3-0

LeBron leads a fourth quarter charge for the Heat against NYK and KD drops 31 on Dallas.

Heat 87, Knicks 70 (MIA leads 3-0)

The Knicks had more than enough chances to put the Heat away during last night’s loss at the Garden but couldn’t capitalize when the opportunity presented itself. With the crowd fully behind them and LeBron James playing a poor first half, New York could not land the necessary final blow to put their opponent away for good. After playing to a stalemate in the first quarter, New York jumped all over Miami and built a double-digit lead which they saw evaporate after a late second quarter run that pulled the Heat back within four.

But with LeBron struggling in the first half, Dwyane Wade once again took advantage of the Knicks lackluster perimeter defense and burned them for 20 points while amassing 5 steals on the opposite end. And after putting together an inspired defensive performance in the first half, where Carmelo Anthony and company matched the Heat physically and limited them offensively, the Knicks just couldn’t find the bottom of the net and Miami completely turned the tables during the second half en route to a 17-point road victory in Game 3.

The third quarter was a slugfest—very reminiscent of a ‘90’s Heat-Knicks Playoff series as both teams looked to overpower each other. While LeBron was relegated to the bench with 4 fouls, his teammates picked up the slack and held the Knicks to just 3 field goals in the third.

Looking rested—and confident that his team would pick him up regardless of what happened—LeBron took over in the fourth and absolutely lit up the Knicks. As soon as the quarter started, he made it clear that it was his time and no one was going to steal his spotlight. James hopped up off the bench and immediately hit a three-pointer, followed a miss for another bucket, then hit another three to turn a two-point lead into a 66-56 cushion. From there, it was over for the Knicks. With LeBron in a zone, Mario Chalmers calmly hit two three-pointers in a row to stretch the lead to 14 with 5:40 to play. The next five and a half minutes were merely a formality as the Heat handed the Knicks their NBA-record 13th straight postseason loss.

Thunder 95, Mavericks 79 (OKC leads 3-0)

The first two games of the first-round series between Dallas and Oklahoma City were close-fought, down to the wire affairs that were each won by the home team from the Sooner State. The League’s leading scorer for the past two seasons dwells on that very same team and in each of the aforementioned games, Kevin Durant struggled from the floor. Scoring, the most unique attribute of a guy whose entire game and make-up screams, “unique.”

Durant was far from shutout from his role as an offensive factor in each of the two wins. Game 1, he hit the game-winner on a contested 18-footer that hit every legal portion of the basket and backboard before falling. In Game 2, he scrapped and clawed his way to the free-throw line 16 times; ending with 26 points.

Generally when a superstar that dominates so extremely on the offensive end isn’t great at that skill, his team (especially a young one) struggles to find postseason success. For the OKC Thunder to be up 2-0 against the defending champs and still waiting for the best of their own best; should put the entire League on alert.

Thursday night, Durant got going early and often en route to a 15-point first quarter; a 20-point first half and a 9-point halftime lead for OKC. As the home team from Dallas clanked shot after shot, Durant’s teammates scored on seemingly every possession. Russell Westbrook put in another borderline virtuoso performance in the third and the Mavs had to play much of the game’s final quarter with an arena littered with empty seats. Daequan Cook and Derek Fisher hit a slew of long-range shots and the team’s young legs were allowed even more rest as the visitors cruised to an extremely impressive 95-79 victory.

Durant finished with an efficient 31 points (on just 15 shots) and an obvious hop in his basketball step, knowing that his team had found the gear they needed to discover if they have true title aspirations. The Mavericks were just never on target either from the field or as a defensive unit. They never enjoyed a lead in the game and now face the mountain that is the 3-0 deficit.

How quickly did this series go from a very close one that could have been in the Mavs’ favor to one that is almost out of reach? How strong must the confidence be flowing for the Thunder as they look to close things out on Saturday night back in Dallas? These questions have simple answers. Human nature dictates that Dallas is in big trouble.

Heart of a champion, maybe? But after all the changes made in the offseason, maybe not the chemistry of one. —Cub Buenning (@cubbuenning)

Dunk of the Night: JR Smith with the crazy finish—where does this stack up among the best Playoff dunks? How much does it take away that the Knicks lost the game and are now down 3-0?

shows you why shumpert was a big loss to them as well. GRAB THE BROOMS!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

OKC is scary, so is Miami. JR’s dunk was great.

  • Da-Meat-Hook

I did not see that dunk coming

  • nella

How long until the media crafts the yearly narrative : Lebron sweeping a first round opponent. – is he the best ever??? 8 turnovers, Knicks essentially crippled, but is he better than Jordan? Tired of him and the heat getting credit for something they’re SUPPOSED to do (to quote Chris Rock). Not a hater typically, but I can see this coming. Its an ESPN annual event since 2009.

  • Otis

    Ready the brooms.

  • Justin G.

DaMeatHook, I had the same reaction. Saw him go up and when he threw it down it was one of those that make you sit up in your chair. I guess this is almost the last we’ll hear from ORANGE until next year? It’s too bad because I’ll miss those delusional Knicks comments

  • KidCongo

67 points in the 1st Game, 70 in the 3rd game. Somebody should turn on their offense.

  • 23

Nella, you must live in some fantasy world. Because as far as I’ve seen, the media has been ALL OVER LeBron in ridiculous fashion. And they will continue to be on him until he wins a ring.

  • 23

The whole reason this discussion came up last year was due to pippens comments on the Mike and Mike radio show

  • http://www.soundcloud.com/tray-5 T-Ray

Well both of those games were just horrible. The Heat just came out like bandits in the second half and ran every possible 3 point threat right off that line. LeBron went beast mode in the 4th and they had no answer for him. As far as the Mavs I had them winning in 6 but this OKC team is just too physical for them. It’s only a matter of time now until TNT starts up the boat.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

That dunk was incredibly impressive. The fact that is was spontaneous was shocking. Most cats plan dunks like that and gather themselves. He just reacted.

Lakers vs OKC round 2. Oh n Lakers in 6

  • http://www.blogspot.com LLC#12

I really don’t think Carmelo belongs in the “superstar” tier at all.

  • ClydeSays

NYK have NO chance of winning even a game if Melo’s going to play like that. He needed to come up big. Miami didn’t exactly light it up & they still won easily. Bad news for the Knicks… Dallas looks cooked to me. Dirk must be worn down from literally carrying that team for a dozen years…

  • http://www.soundcloud.com/tray-5 T-Ray

I find it very interesting that Perkins plays better one on one defense on Dirk then Ibaka but so many people said Ibaka deserved DPOY. This just shows that just because you averaged 3 blocks a game doesn’t mean you deserve to win the DPOY.

  • bike

Anyone going to start labeling Carmelo a choke artist yet?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Nick Tha Quick

    - Novak is an elite shooter but against disciplined defenses he is useless. His singular skill to catch and shoot is easily taken away. He doesn’t come off screens or work to get a shot like Ray/Kyle Korver or create his own shot. Even a comparable shooter like Ryan Anderson rebounds and does some work in the paint.
    - Watching Chalmers in college, I never imagined he would be doing this well in the NBA. I figured he would end up overseas or a journeyman around the league. Much of it is hard work, some of it is luck.
    - Shout out to IamOrange last seen shopping at the Bass Pro Shop.

    LOL Nick you a fool.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Chalmers has two very good traits. He is pesky on defense and he doesn’t get affected by moments.
I don’t if it’s innate or the weed, but dude embraces pressure moments. He doesn’t always make the right play or hit the big shot, but he never, ever plays like he’s afraid. In fact, he plays with more confidence in the crunch. Sometimes too much confidence, but that’s better than too little.

  • 23

when chalmers is in attack mode it is a very good thing. there was a prime example yesterday when the bron, wade and mario were on the fast break. chalmers had the ball and the defense ran strait to cover bron and wadek, leaving chalmers with a wide open lane.

  • LA Huey

Chalmers was just calming draining triples in the 4th. It seems Cole picked up ‘Rio’s penchant for fouling jump shooters. Wade had a ridiculous close out on Novak in the 4th that had my innner-Hubie jumping up and down with excitement. Lebron cooled off after the 1st 6 minutes of the 4th but it was great to see him going for it.

  • 23

and mia’s shooters were WAYY OFF yesterday. battier ended up with 0 points and he had several open looks. the heat played horribly, in very ugly fashion. but the fact that they still got the W is a good sign. also lebron starting off the 4th with aggression was key.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Did you know that John Stockton once shot 57 percent from the floor in a season while averaging 14 assists? Amazing.
Did you know Isiah Thomas once averaged 21 and 14? Or that Kevin Johnson averaged 20 and 9+ on four or five occasions?
Kevin Johnson is criminally underrated by most basketball fans.

  • http://www.soundcloud.com/tray-5 T-Ray

That’s amazing Allen. And yes KJ is very underrated among the greats. As far as Rio goes he and LeBron pretty much killed the Knicks in the 4th. Once LeBron started off on fire he was finding Chalmers on the wings and he knocked down the open 3s. Cosign 23 on the fact that they played ugly ball and still won buy 17. The fact that they can play better is scary.

  • LA Huey

I can get behind the idea that Chalmers is either oblivious to the moment or plays under the influence.
23, Battier is ’12 version of Mike Miller: my Heat whipping boy.

  • Andrew Woods

Skip kills me on ESPN. he rails on lebron for his first 3qtrs and blatantly ignores the brillant fourth. But he will champion tim tebow for his 4th quarter comebacks will turning a blind eye to the first 3

  • http://www.slamonline.com Nick Tha Quick

    - Any self-respecting basketball fan should know better than to pay attention to what Skip says. I’m sure Jalen feels the same way.

  • http://www.soundcloud.com/tray-5 T-Ray

Waaay off topic but LeBron’s performance in the 4th reminded me but I heard the Hulk is easily the best character in the Avengers and has an epic a$$ last scene.

  • http://www.fiba.com Darksaber

T: not the LAST scene but easily the most hilarious moments in the film, along with Stark.
(but that was expected, RDJ and all)
It’s a great summer blockbuster, enjoy.

  • Da-Meat-Hook

ClydeSays “Dirk must be worn down from literally carrying that team for a dozen years…”

    Really?

  • http://www.soundcloud.com/tray-5 T-Ray

Yeah well not the last but one of the most hilarious of the film. I saw that part on youtube couldn’t wait. How you holding up after tonight Dark? I was pulling for you guys hoping we got a rematch of last years semi finals.

I don’t know why the Knicks INSISTED on playing Miami in the first round. I honestly don’t get it. They could have played and easily beaten Chicago. Did they seriously think they’d have a better shot at Miami than Chicago, especially with a half-healthy Derrick Rose (who later went out with a full/unfortunate injury)? The Sixers lucked out big time by losing their last game of the regular season… They actually might make it to the second round now. The Knicks are the seventh seed and were still talking about winning the title–how about looking for a favorable first round match-up next time?

  • http://slamonline.com p

@andrew woods: yea man, i can’t stand sh** bayless at all

  • http://www.fiba.com Darksaber

T: thanks for the concern, but the season was lost when Chandler left. Knew it would be a grind, Dirk never plays well in the Nba after a summer with the national team, yada, yada…
Eff that, i’m pissed at the the 1st two losses and how the conceded so many points at home ,in the 1st quarter. Expected more fire.
Oh well, Dirk got a ring, and rebuilding around a marquee player might help the Mavs right the ship.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

I never gave Dallas a chance after game 3. Looks like I should have only given them a chance through game 2.

  • http://www.soundcloud.com/tray-5 T-Ray

Yea that’s true. I thought this series could easily be 2-1 Mavs right now but they just couldn’t execute late in games 1&2.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

I swear if I hear one more person label Carmelo Anthony the League’s “best scorer” again, I’m going to lose it. You can not be the L’s best scorer and shoot 42% during the season and 34% in the playoffs. It doesn’t work that way.

  • LA Huey

Teddy, they type of person that wants to play for the Knicks would get into a series with Monstars. Of course, they think they could take Miami. Sorry, bro.

  • T-Money

to me, miami kinda snatched any will remaining in new york when the ball was swung to novak in the corner and wade ran to him and just swallowed him whole. novak didn’t even get a shot off and ate the ball for a shot clock violation.

  • RobbieJay

the heat havent really used their bench other then shane and mike. and i like that. joel anthony plays his energy minutes but haslem at the 5 is wodnerful. cole really pissed me off last night. thats all i got lol

  • http://www.slamonline.com Cub Buenning

Allenp is dead-on on KJ being undervalued. And he has one of (if not THE) the best postseason dunks in NBA history. One of those moments, I can still remember where i was when the play occurred. On a hall-of-famer, to boot!

When Dallas couldn’t get wins on KD’s off-nights shooting the ball, you knew it would get worse once he got on track.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

This season was fill of so many ups and downs. It’s only fitting we finish it on a down. These 2012-13 Knicks through the compressed 66 game schedule were like Memphis Belle, and she finally crashed in the playoffs. With that said, I look forward to the eventual off-season along with an entire training camp with a coaching staff that isn’t a lame duck staff. Next season is a make or break season for the Knicks core players. They have to take a big step forward next season. I love Mike Woodson and what he brings to the table as a coach, but if Phil Jackson wants the job it will be his. I think he’d do wonders for Melo…I’d like to get Lamar Odom here somehow too. With all that said, congratulations to the heat. They’re a fine tuned machine right now. If they keep playing defense like they are right now, I can’t see them getting beat by anyone in a 7 game series.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

    Oh….lawd. Here we go again.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Nick The Quick why you always mentioning me? We have zero rapport here. Only reason I’m even responding to you is because you always seem to have my big Oranges in your mouth. Same goes for that douche JustinGspot.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

    Where we going JPriceless21?

  • LA Huey

Cub, you’re probably thinking of KJ’s baseline Nightmare on Dream Olajuwon.

  • LA Huey

“you always seem to have my big Oranges in your mouth”
    That was funny.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Nick Tha Quick

Another utterly pointless thought about the playoffs.
    - I have done it. We have all done it. But it still truly amazes me how players truly believe they didn’t foul when they clearly disemboweled someone. Leading offenders are Lebron, Kobe, CP3, the entire Denver Nuggets franchise. At least, when Brian Cardinal lays the wood on you, the man is forthright about it.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

I know you’re in a state of mourning. So I don’t want to hurt those little feelings of yours.
