Rajon Rondo Aims to Continue Being the ‘Best Point Guard in the NBA’

Rajon Rondo was quite feisty and combative when facing the media yesterday, upon his return from a one-game suspension for making contact with a referee. In addition to declaring that he feels as though Boston has basically already beaten the Hawks in their first round Playoff series, Rondo also let everyone know that he believes he’s the League’s best point guard. Per the Boston Herald: “Even when told Rivers expected him to come out hard in Game 3 and he was asked about having something to prove, Rondo played verbal defense. ‘I don’t have anything to prove,’ he said. ‘Why would I have anything to prove? I just want to win. That’s it. I’m confused about why you guys would think I have anything to prove. I mean, it’s a game I’ve been playing my entire life. The world knows what I can do. Like I said, the world knows what I can do. I’ll continue to go out there and play and do what I do best and be the best point guard in the NBA.’”

He has said this before and I know he tells himself it but I have a feeling he’s much more comfortabble bragging out loud about his imaginary best PG title belt, now that he knows a certain someone who has been abusing him for quite some time is not waiting for him anymore in the 2nd round.

John Wall is rolling over in his grave.

  • http://www.nba.com Gman

    Good for John Wall….

  • ash

Nothing hear to write about..I wish th memebers of the media would stop making somethig out of nothing.

  • Bt

John Wall??? If you’re even hinting John Wall is anywhere close to the best PG in the league your mistaken. He’s behind (in no order) Paul, Rondo, Williams, Westbrook, Rose, Nash, Parker, Curry, Lowry, Jennings and Even Irving and probably Calderon as well. Did you not see his shooting percentages (43%, 7% YES 7% 3PFG) or turnover numbers last season? Yet he still thought he was allowed to stare down opponents while dunking in blowout losses.

  • Ill Smith

I’d have a real beef if he DIDN’T believe he was the best PG. Ask DRose, CP3, Westbrooks or Parker the same question & you’ll get the same answer, move along people.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

I must have missed the news of CP, DWill, Rose and TP dying in a plane crash.

  • http://www.offthebackboard.wordpress.com Off The Backboard

    @BT – They’re kidding.

  • http://www.optimabbc.be Max

    Bt doesn’t quite get it..

  • josh

rondo is the best pg without a doubt, the man almost averages a triple double

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

    Nick be trollin.

  • Mike Mihalow

Rondo would barely crack my top 10.

  • Zabbah

    Rondo can lick my crack.

  • LA Huey

Derek Fisher is rolling in his grave.

  • Rik Smits Mullet

he is my favorite pure pg. Does that make him the best. No not really. But iam just not really into all these new sg/pg hybrids like rose and westbrook. For me a point guard has to get a couple of 15 plus assist games. Not score 30 points. So that makes rondo my personal no1 pg. Also making insane assists helps a lot.

  • http://slamonline.com YKnot

Wall said he wants to the best pg in the game at the beginning of the season, that’s what they’re referencing. I’m sure everyone from DRose down to Lester Hudson said the same thing!

  • http://slamonline dan

every top player has to believe that they are the best, – you wont get nowhere without belief

Oh and how can anyone say that Rose is not no’1 ?????

    Reigning league MVP FFS!!!!

  • Duh

God what i’d give for Rose to magically heal and remind Rondo why he pisses himself the night before he plays him. Too big for rondo, too fast, and most importantly, too good.

  • bike

Just once, I would love to hear a player state that he strives for mediocrity and that being the best doesn’t mean anything to him. Just happy to be playing ball.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Rondo averaged a triple double against Rose in a playoff series….not saying he’s better, but he sure isn’t “Pissing himself”

  • http://www.slamonline.com spit hot fiyah

cosign bike, what is rondo supposed to say, why even post this type of stuff. As far as assits goes though, he is right up there

  • http://slamonline.com 1982

It would only be weird if he came out and said, “I want to play like the 3rd or 4th best pg in the league, depending on who you ask, and during what point in the season.” This is normal. Even Mario Chalmers should walk onto the court thinking this.

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com Enigmatic

The fact that Rondo averaged a triple double against Rose in the playoffs when Rose was a rookie doesn’t change the fact that Rose, starting last season, regularly smokes Rondo.
He’s dropped an average of 30.3 against him in their last 3 matchups.
Of course, with Rose’s injury…who knows if he’ll be able to do that again :(

  • http://www.slamonline.com lalal

@dan – rose is not – see i just said it – if rondo and rose played a one on one now – rondo would win – deny it !!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Dagger

If you can’t score consistently you can’t call yourself the league’s best point. Period. Especially when your lack of scoring ability seriously impedes your team’s anemic offense.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Matic I’m not saying Rondo is as good as Rose at all, just that he’s not scared of him

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    1. Rose does handle Rondo. Rondo won the matchup when he was a rookie and hasn’t won since.
    2. Rondo still can’t shoot.
    3. Point guards do what their teams need. There is no rule that says you have to hand out 15 assists and even if there was Rose did that this year.

  • vtrobot

What Rik Smits said. Plus you also add in some nice steals numbers and those crazy rebound numbers too? That’s a fun PG to watch. What’s the dude supposed to say, that he considers himself the 3rd best PG in the L? I know that RR has struggled against Rose. You know that RR has struggled against Rose. I would imagine that RR is aware of that too. Triple Double tonight. I’d like to see +20 assists.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

@Enig, wtf man, people need to stay optimistic. I’m one of the biggest rose/bulls fans (not to disrespect anyone) and I was/am absolutely heartbroken by Rose’s injury, I’ve read all about the ACL and every famous athlete who teared it but he WILL come back. Next season he will not be himself, he will be slower he will be playing scared and he will struggle but in 2 years you better believe Rose will be as good as he was in his MVP year and maybe even better because of all the hard work he will have to get through, the mental toughness he will develop and the strengthening of all his leg and upper body muscles. I believe in that 100% (and yes 2 years is a pretty long time but as you know he will only be 25).

  • LA Huey

“Point guards do what their teams need.” Bottom line.

  • http://abcnews.com charliewinning

Technically speaking all positions should do what their teams need. Lebron is as much a point guard as Rose when his team needs it. Shaq was an offensively dominant center who played great defense when he wanted. PG isn’ t the only position subject to pigeonholed-type of ideas. Pippen was your classic basketball do it all. People get too defensive over Rose.

  • Heals

See what happens when you ya lock the kid up in his hotel room for a game…

  • Heals

I just knew Rajon was going to come out abrasive/testy given his demeanor in the past, now he just needs to back it up (which he will). @Mike then your top 10 doesn’t mean shht…

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

Tony parker can do it all, and does do it all, in a very balanced manner. Also, no one can stop him.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Charliewinning

I agree completely. Great players do what their teams need. If you can’t change your game somewhat to fit your team’s needs then that says something about your greatness. Not everything, but something. Magic is better than Stockton in no small part because he could put on that “dominant scorer” hat on occasion if that’s what his team needed. Same thing Isiah, in my opinion.
Jordan was easily a dominant scorer, but he also had a season where he averaged eight assists becasue that’s what he had to do. You can be great and one or two-dimensional, but when it comes to rank you against the other greats, you’re going to fall short.

  • http://www.slamonline.com The riddler

Rondo on the lakers would be beast and if rondo develops a consistent mid range game he would be 1 in the laugue. Chris Paul is the best with all the intangibles he brings.

  • http://itsahardwoodlife.blogspot.com omphalos

As a Celtics fan I gotta love Rondo’s swagger, he’s still pissed off about that elbow injury stopping him testing the Heat, ECF are going to be huge this season.

  • T-Money

rondo can be very hard to like sometimes.

  • LA Huey

The thing I love about basketball is how fluid the positions can be. Any player can score, distribute, and grab boards if you have the requisite skill set. And everyone HAS to carry their weight on defense.

  • Heals

@Tarzan, TonyP got hurt this year by his team’s own success. I totally agree with you, the Spurs usually beat teams so bad that TP isn’t even playing much of the 2nd half in games. When they played elite teams he always balled out. Just ask his teammates T-$$$…

  • Heals

FYI I was agreeing with you T. The thing with Rajon is you have to have VERY thick skin both on and off the court to play with these Celtics. Rajon was already a self-assured person coming into the L. When KG arrived he was thrust into the role of mediator/director of team with 3 HOF’s, a powerful, no nonsense coach and title expectations. This process has molded the guy we see (and hear) today…

  • http://nba.com/celtics lights out

i’m so glad that in what’s become a buddy-buddy, i-hope-people-like-me league, we have at least one young guy who doesn’t care about any of that crap. wish more players were like this.

  • Heals

@AllenP, you read KeyonDooling’s comments about Rajon-Stockton. Basically pointing out how the media wets their collective panties when mentioning John, but paints RR as petulant, stand offish, selfish, stubborn, rude, arrogant, etc., yet Stockton acted very similar (never available for media, kept to himself before/after games and on/off the court, very little rapport during interviews, talks down to dumb questions or gives short answers) and was an incredibly dirty player too…

  • Heals

    @lightsout, Bynum and Rondo All NBA 1st Team “I don’t a give a uck”…

  • http://slamonline.com datkid

yeah a couple things.. @BT give wall 2 or 3 more years and he will be able to TORCH Rondo. can we all take a second and appreciate how many awesome physical gifts he has? guy’s 6’5(and still growing, apparently) he’s got the speed of a russell westbrook/derrick rose(plus derrick rose’s huge vertical) type, massive untapped defensive potential, incredible court vision, and he is rapidly becoming stronger. plus he’s a humble hard working guy, and that shot is slowly getting better. if you put “Curry, Lowry, Jennings and Even Irving and probably Calderon as well” over wall you’re going to look stupid very soon. plus wall passes better than rose and westbrook already, and arguably parker too.

and guys let’s not act like Rondo completely destroyed rose that series. in game 1 rose dropped over 30 points on rondo (I think he tied Kaj’s record for most points scored in 1st playoff game by a rookie) and he had like 20+ for the series. yes rondo avg’d a triple double but rose gave him, and continues to give him BUCKETS. and I’ma huge rondo fan.

  • http://slamonline.com datkid

if we’re talking about best pg as someone who can do everything the only 2 people who should be in the convo are D.will and (playoff) CP3.. every other elite pg will struggle under certain circumstances but those 2 would literally thrive anywhere. their games have very little weaknesses.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Heals
I didn’t see that, but it sounds right.
I believe Rondo is a jerk to the media, and I understand why even if I think it’s a dumb decision.
And I also understand why he’s treated differently.

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

You’ll never be the best PG in the NBA if you don’t improve that jumper.

  • RIGGS

He’s the best pure point in the league. His court vision and passing abilities are great. He can’t shoot? so the eff what. Jason kidd couldnt shoot for how many years? and who here would not put kidd in the HoF?

  • http://gmail.com z

…i wonder why rondo gets treated differently by the media than stockton, when they both behave pretty similarly…
