Report: Golden State Warriors to Move to San Francisco for 2017-’18 Season

That the Warriors are eventually headed to San Francisco isn’t really news, but details of the date sure is. This was first broken by a fan blogger for the Mercury News, then quickly picked up by other outlets. From Warriors World: “According to @GSWFastBreak, the Warriors have finalized plans to move from Oakland to San Francisco in 2017. The move would provide the Warriors with a brand new, modern, multi-use arena on Pier 30/32 that would be utilized not only for basketball but other various events. The privately funded arena — assuming all goes smoothly — would cut the tape before the 2017-2018 season. The move to San Francisco shouldn’t be a surprise as owner Joe Lacob has made it clear of his plans for a move since his ownership began. Oracle Arena is currently the oldest arena in the NBA — it first opened in 1966 — and while renovations took place before the 1996-1997 season, the rust was clearly showing.”

Oracle Arena is an amazing place to see a game. It’s also one of the last arenas from the 1980s NBA that I loved to watch. Kind of sad. My only suggestion is to make it a new modern version of the Oracle where the crowd looks like it’s ontop of the court and with the acoustics to match. That’s what homecourt advantage is all about.

This franchise needed this. San Fran is a beautiful city that could attract free agents. It’s unfortunate this team is so poorly run. They’ve made some awful trades and their draft history is just terrible. Klay Thompson looks like he’s gonna be a stud for several years. Udoh was coming along but they packaged him. I love Curry but there’s no chance that ankle holds up. How have Randolph, Diogu, Biedrins, Pietrus and Diogu worked out? These guys were all drafted around 10 with nothing to show for. The city change is good but they need new management.

They need to change the name too. There’s no Empire State Knicks, Evergreen State Supersonics or Lone Star State Mavericks.

So they are going to play in the pier, in the middle of the bay! Love it.

Cosign Albie. On paper, the location seems fantastic right on the Embarcadero. Then you remember the narrow streets and the fact that the Bay Bridge has HORRIBLE traffic to begin with. Think they’ll expand BART to get there?

albie and caboose, totally agree. getting to the game is gonna be terrible. plus, i can already see ticket prices skyrocketing.
caboose, i doubt they expand bart. they definitely need to improve muni, however.
