Report: Hawks Not Talking Extension With Josh Smith

Although Josh Smith is available for a contract extension, the Hawks reportedly aren’t working on it. When asked if he would be talking about an extension this summer, Smith told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that no one has brought an extension up to him (via PBT): “Before Josh Smith started his summer vacation, he was asked about the possibility of signing a contract extension with the Hawks. ‘I can’t get extended,’ Smith said. ‘They didn’t give me the money; I had to go get it. That’s something I have to play it out and see how it goes from there.’ Two things stand out about that statement. The first is that Smith, who presumably got the info from his agent, is wrong about his contract not being eligible for an extension. [...] But the more interesting aspect of Smith’s statement is his allusion to having to ‘go get’ his contract. He’s referring, of course, to the offer sheet he signed with Memphis in 2008, which Atlanta subsequently matched. (The Hawks can thank the Grizzlies for being able to keep Smith with a reasonable deal.) It bothers Smith he had to create a market for himself to get a satisfactory contract from the Hawks (though at least he didn’t have to leave the country like Josh Childress). Smith’s feelings were amplified when Al Horford got an extension before becoming a restricted free agent. So add that 2008 contract dance to Smith’s list of grievances with the Hawks.”

Both Kyle Lowry and Josh Smith want out. Interesting.

    I’m 80% sure he’ll be in Boston by 2014.

As much as I hate hearing every player mentioned as being traded to lakers… I could actually see them making a move for Smith.

Time for us to amnesty Boozer after this season & pick up Josh Smith. Hello NBA Championship.

  • Tim Sayaseng

ChiTown or Lakers. Go to the bigger market and compete for once

  • ItzPLayz

Ship him to Lakers..they need to get more athletic…

why didn’t josh smith take the Qualifying Offer when he signed that contract and just booked it out of Atlanta at the first chance he got? Bet you he’s kicking himself over it now.

I see him with the Thunder before the trade deadline, unless they win it all.

I think Atlanta will make a move to keep him – he’s played one of his most efficient seasons statistically and now that he’s not jacking up the three ball like Derrick Coleman he’ll get P.A.I.D.

I’d LOVE to see him play for the Mavs. He’d have to play the 3 spot but I think it could really work.

  • theDankerNuggets

this guy has the worst f+cking attitude if i were the hawks id let him walk

  • Kadavour

He’s great on Defense, but the last thing the Lakers need is this clown tossing up that fugly jumpshot from beyond 15ft. if they can reign that in, then sure. otherwise, Chicago or Dallas would be perfect fits. I’m sure i’m leaving out other teams that would love to have him.

Get rid of Deng..? Why lol he’s a great unselfish player.

  • Clydesays

Weakside blocks, dunks and chucking up bad threes at the worse possible time. I’m with the Hawks on this one….

Flight 9, put down the pipe buddy..

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Dont be surprised if he waits till after Dwight gets traded.

  • fish sticks

Honestly I thought he was by far the best player on the Hawks this year (granted, Horford was out). His points, rebounds, blocks and steals were all outstanding, and he is a versatile defender and an athletic freak. He toned down his threes/long balls this year, and had his most efficient season yet. Man deserves a little more respect, and watch out if he ends up in either BOS/LAL/CHI. Rose,Rip,Deng,Smith,Noah?

  • http://www.nba.com Shadojoker

Flight 9 is sleeping Hard on Luol Deng..he played the whole season with one hand and he is a better defender,scorer,teammate..allstar..etc..keep deng >josh smith

  • http://slam FLIGHT 9

deng is not worth the money period….

  • Shem

If they could get a center for Smith, the Hawks could possibly get off the 1st or 2nd round treadmill they’re on. Sliding Horford down to his natural position would do wonders for this team.

  • Tempest

He’s going to the Wizards. You watch haha

As a College Park native who roots for J-Smoove, as a person, but lives in LA, I am begging, pleading actually, that Kupchak not pursue Josh Smith. He’s not cut out for Lakers’ culture. He’d melt under the bright lights, expectations, media scrutiny, and Kobe’s intense, incessant glare. Honestly, what do you think would happen after J-Smoove takes his 100th ill-advised jumper and fails to bow down to Kobe? Would Kobe kill him?? Would J-Smoove, because he is from C.P., just preemptively kill Kobe??? I don’t think anyone wants to find out.

  • JMagicFan

He should come to the Orlando Magic and play at the Small Forward.

  • Bh

One more thing: Knowing what you aren’t is just as important as knowing what you are. And J-Smoove is a basketball player, plain and simple. He isn’t trying to win championships or make Olympic teams; he, literally, plays around on the court like kids do. He’s just having a good time, getting paid to do what he loves. There’s nothing wrong with that. I’m happy for him. He’s blessed. But the Lakers, and Kobe specifically, are trying to win chips. I mean, think about it: after all these years, it’s still unclear if Kobe even enjoys basketball. Clearly, he enjoys dominating dudes; he likes to be “the best.” But he is nothing at all like Josh Smith. Their union would be an unmitigated disaster. Book that!

  • iLL wiLL

JSmoove to the Raptors. Not gonna happen, but it would give me a reason to pay for my tickets to Raps games.

There’s an interesting question, who is the better player, Josh or Deng?

  • MeloMan15

    knicks for amare!!

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Caboose that isn’t an interesting question. Smith is better. You know that. – Deng might be the better system player though.

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

Since when do I give my opinion first when I ask a question? You know that :p Yeah, Deng fits his system better, but Josh is just overall better. No matter what the All Star team says.

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com Enigmatic

We got Carlos Boozer making $17 mil to disappear in the playoffs annually and dude is complaining about Deng’s contract?

  • iknowmybasketball

josh smith and rondo would make great running partners. maybe rondo can get him to join the celtics, after all they did play at oak hill together and on the same aau team in atlanta.

  • dj

    cosign @enigmatic

  • yc

why would he go to boston?

    i agree with @nbk.

think he will follow howard. see their highschool clips. they go along fine.

  • Bobitto

He’s been getting did in by the hawks ever since he got there. If I were him I’d be more than happy to walk. I say Boston, he needs a play maker to set him up instead of a ball hog who gets him the ball in inopportune situations. No offense JJ.
