Russell Westbrook Still Bothered By 42 Points Tony Parker Scored on Him

The memory of getting lit up for 42 points by Tony Parker in a regular season game earlier this season is still gnawing away at Russell Westbrook. With Parker planning on continuing with the offensive assault, Westbrook is prepared to bounce back. From the Oklahoman: “That 42-point explosion Tony Parker posted on the Thunder back in February still eats at him. ‘A little bit, yeah,’ Westbrook admitted. [...] The Spurs point guard made 16 of 29 shots and heated up like a slow cooker, scoring six in the first quarter, 10 in the second, 16 in the third and another 10 in the fourth. He made 10 of 12 free throws. He dished out nine assists. He pulled down three rebounds. He came up with two steals. And he didn’t have a single turnover in 40 minutes. ‘It was a bad game,’ Westbrook said when asked what he remembers about that night. ‘It was a bad game for our team. We got out sluggish, kind of let them do what they wanted to do, especially Tony Parker.’ That winter night is now an important one as these two teams prepare to square off in the Western Conference Finals. Westbrook hasn’t forgotten what Parker did to him and his teammates. And when the ball is thrown up in Game 1 on Sunday, you can be sure that memory will help fuel Westbrook this time out. [...] ‘I definitely can learn from it,’ Westbrook said. ‘Like I said, it was a tough game for us and we’ll learn from it.’”

If Westbrook turns this into a 1 vs 1 matchup, it’s going to end extremely badly for the Thunder. Spurs team defence is too good to just let Westbrook attack the pain/ft area consistently. They aren’t the Mavs or the Lakers. They work as a cohesive unit.
Tony Parker going into PnR situations and knifing into the defence is something the Spurs focus on, because they actually run plays around Parkers movement. OKC, not so much.
Spurs have guys who play the 4/5 who can hit outside jumpers, (Jax, Diaw mainly), whereas the Lakers didn’t, so Parker going to the paint causes all kinds of issues.
Bynum and Gasol aren’t unathletic, but they certainly aren’t quick. They struggle to rotate/are lazy.
Duncan is a much better defensive player, and Splitter has improved drastically the last 2 years in terms of help side rotation. Spurs also have better+longer wing defenders (Leonard, Jax, Green) than LA/DAL.
Biggest key is still coaching though, Pop wins by a mile.

    Let’s get this sh!t going!!

I wouldn’t be surprised if Danny Green guarded him instead, like he did to Chris Paul (which apparently worked out pretty well).

@Hursty – You get two thumbs up for a great breakdown. Obviously Parker and Duncan are great players, but what is really going to make things tough for OKC and Miami are the better, longer AND younger wing defenders that the Spurs have. Leonard and Green just need to make life difficult for Durant/Westbrook and Bron/Wade because expecting these tandems to play 35-40 minutes a game, score 30+ points and play lockdown defense is a recipe for disaster. I can’t wait to see the Spurs dismantle these teams. I’m going with the Spurs in 6 in both rounds!

LMAO just cos its playoff time guys like to pretend that they care about that end of the floor. I love westbrook´s game but dude, really. We all know the only stats you look at are your own.

I think Parker has mastered the art of brain control

Thing is Parker won’t jack up shots, he takes good shots, if Westbrook really makes this personal he will shoot his team out of it. This sh!t cant come fast enough.
