Scott Brooks Regrets Benching Serge Ibaka in Game 1

OKC Thunder head coach Scott Brooks did something rare for a coach in the middle of a Playoff battle: he admitted that he made a tactical error. Brooks told the assembled media that he screwed up when he had Serge Ibaka riding pine in the fourth quarter of the Game 1 WCF loss to the San Antonio Spurs. From the Express-News: “Brooks can still beat the Spurs, and he would be rewarded for that. He’s the rare coach in a conference finals without a contract for next season; advance to the Finals, and he likely will get a rich one. But, before practice Monday, he was just the next round’s version of Vinny Del Negro. As Sam Presti sat at midcourt, the boss of all he could see, Brooks stood in a media swarm trying to explain why he benched Serge Ibaka in the fourth quarter on Sunday. ‘Every decision you make, if it doesn’t work out, you always say, ‘Why did you do that?’ Brooks said. ‘I’m with you on that. I wish I would have played Serge last night.’”

Poor excuse. He is the coach. Watching his team getting eaten alive, and neither he nor Cheeks do anything. Two other coaching failures. KD getting 2 shots in the quarter, and why does Perkins get the ball with his back to the basket. He is worthless on offense but he still thinks he is Hakeem. My take is Brooks is too intimidated to say anything to him.

If he was just gonna play one big out of Ibaka and Perkins it has to be Serge with his shot blocking ability he coulda at least changed some of Ginobili’s shots if he didn’t block them

watching the game i was thinking what is ibaka doing on the bench for so long. thought he would have been a better fit with that line up than perk, spurs weren’t that big

I love a honest coach!! Ibaka should always finish games! The other blunders don’t isolate Durant he had 4 Spurs on him at one point, don’t take Westbrook out so much he has plenty of energy,Hardin does need to guard MANU G takes to much energy, put Thebo S on him Remember he did as good a job on Kobe as can be done! USE YOUR HEAD BROOKS!!!

@ doe Thebo S. Was on Ginoballi on certain plays don’t think it helped. OKC has Durant that Spurs cant match up with. Ibaka can’t guard Duncan you have to put Perkins on him and with Boris he can take Ibaka out in the perimenter because he can shoot 3s.

Just saying, Serge REALLY struggled trying to guard Duncan. Ibaka is probably the best help defender in the L, but his one-on-one D is middling at best.

Brooks likes certain things. Ibaka to protect the rim. Perkins to guard the Post. Collison to guard pick and rolls. Considering SA doesn’t attack the paint like a normal team, Ibaka is not as effective.
Now do I agree with Brooks boxing himself into that position? Not at all. But that’s what he does. Changing his habits might throw off everything the Thunder do. Tonight might tell us if the Thunder can take this to 7, or get crushed in 5.
