Carmelo Anthony Believes ‘Time is Coming’ to Win a Championship

Melo is training hard this offseason, having lost 12 pounds already since his Knicks were ousted from the Playoffs. Anthony thinks it’s only a matter of time until he’ll be hoisting up the Larry O’Brien Trophy. Per the NY Post: “After watching his buddy [LeBron] James win his first title last Thursday, Anthony said that could be him soon. Anthony sent LeBron a congratulatory text message that night. ‘I believe my time is coming,’ Anthony said. ‘I’m a big believer in that. Whether this year or next year, I truly believe our time is coming. We’re going to keep playing for that. ’ Anthony has been training for the London Olympics with Tyson Chandler in Los Angeles and said he’s lost 12 pounds, down to 239, since the playoffs ended in the first round in five games to the eventual champion Heat. Knicks coach Mike Woodson and his staff visited Anthony, Chandler and Jeremy Lin last week in L.A. and the coaching staff was impressed. Woodson had talked about ‘Melo being in better shape next season. ‘I’m exceeding expectations,’ Anthony said. ‘They were kind of shocked to see me down in weight. They came to my workout, saw it. They’re actually excited how much hard work I’ve put in since the season ended.’ Anthony said the Woodson visit was terrific, with the belief Lin assuredly is re-signing. ‘We’re just trying to get that camaraderie right now and a family mentality, tried to create a bond, not just on the court but off the court,’ Anthony said.”

Sorry Melo but knicks aren’t close to winning the chip anytime soon. Team needs to get better.

  • Mike Gilbert

I saw the title of the article and just loled, but wow, I hope this could actually be the motivated Carmelo the NBA has never seen. Could the Knicks actually be, dare I say, good? Gasp!

  • http://slamonline.com Nella

If he actually believes it’s his destiny, rather than working hard and becoming a better player and addressing his deficiencies (which is how his comments come off), then he’s never going to win one.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bMpEWfhsJtM danfields

the knicks were great under woodson and injuries slowed them down more than any post-woodson chemistry or system matter. whoever is suprised when the upcoming season will be a sucessfull one doesnt know ish about bball

  • Heals

    Unfortunately “time is passing” too…

  • Honduran

With Amar’e declining, Knicks need to win one soon. I do agree with what Phil Jackson said about the Knicks though…

  • ctk

Just as close as OKC …they played anybody but Heat they would of won a round or two….Knicks played better D on the Heat than OKC did…Melo is harder to guard than Durant is for Bron …Knicks got a pf that can score OKC dont ..Knicks get a pg cuz Lin aint ready ..they get Nash they got a shot

  • R32

“Down to 239″…lol what? We all know he wasn’t playing with 251 lbs. of lean muscle. If he dedicates himself, we could see a more dominant Melo! Quicker, stronger and more agile…

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bMpEWfhsJtM danfields

the knicks r ready n fine when healthy. jus mind our (knicks fans) words.

  • 130623

No way the Knicks can beat the HEAT! Or the Bulls, they got alot of work to do and they can’t win with melo & AMARE! Won’t happen

  • clydesays

This dude… “I’m exceeding expectations” Hahaha. That sounds like some sycophant just blurted that out (prolly some Dolan lackey) and Melo repeated it. Knicks fans had better hope he figures out how to play both sides of the ball sometime soon, bc that contract could be untradeable once the new salary cap kicks in…

  • Mike

Not sure why people think Lebron can guard Durant lol

  • Fat Lever

Heals, but Melo doesn’t. So where does that leave him?

  • http://www.newyorkshockexchange.com Shock Exchange

And I used to think “The time was coming for me to date Jayne Kennedy.” So what’s your point?

  • mask

i think a more muscular more agile melo would be devastating to defenses and would definitely help chances at getting a ring. Its not all on him though. That whole team needs to get better. Amare???

  • Ash

Knicks have a fighting chance after Miami i can see them winning the ECF.

  • http://blackamericaweb.com charliewinning

I’m usually the biggest Melo hater but at least he’s working hard. There’s nothing wrong with aspiring to win a chip as long as dedication is there to back it up. Now, I’m not saying it’s possible with the way the roster is constructed but when Melo is committed it gives them a heck of a shot to at least compete.

First things first….WHERE IS “ORANGE”. Secondly, anyone that thinks the Knicks are “close” to winning, hasnt been following basketball. And that includes Melo himself. Of course you want to bring that level of confidence to yourself and the team, but realistically…they arent close. Are they a playoff team? Yes, definitely! Can they beat the Bulls or Heat? NO. So unless Miami drops off or Chicago drops off…best NY will finish (during the big 3/D-Rose era) will be 3rd. They cannot beat either one of these teams 4 times.

  • O

Knicks need to have Amare come off the bench or trade him for Iggy or really damn near anyone else who plays defense and passes the ball. Melo needs to play constant D and pass the ball when double teamed instead of forcing up bad shots. Also try they very damn best to gas Steve Nash to take a deal.

  • Ldub

@Mike….nobody can guard Durant…but to clarify for you…Because of Lebrons strength, size, speed and basketball IQ…he makes it more challenging (than others) for KD to score. He is kind of a bully/big brotha.

Have Amare come off the bench? Reading comments like this makes me feel as if people really dont watch basketball. You dont have your 2nd best player on the team come off the bench! And a trade for Iggy wouldnt be beneficial because Sixers dont need a 4 and NY doesnt need a 3 (MELO!). The Knicks just need chemistry and direction. A pg that can control the pace of the game and get everyone involved. I will agree Melo cant become a chucker and expect to win. Especially in the playoffs where teams play you a minimum of 4 times and make adjustments to stop you. Requires ball movement and team play.

  • trueballer4life

lebron is too dame great, sorry melo u will never beat miami..!– lbj is gonna own the nba for 6-7 more years!..

LOL. Mellow got too hype when he seen LeBron celebrating. Its the equivelent of me watching a Jordan video before goin out to play ball. :-)

  • http://www.newyorkshockexchange.com Shock Exchange

AQWORD, Hilarious. Also, Melo must not have seen Bron and Wade laughing at the Knicks after their Game 5 press conference. They couldn’t stop chuckling at the thought of NY beating them.

  • Rainman

Why is everyone saying” unless chicago falls off” as if the bulls didn’t just lose rose and lose in the first round?…

    And oh, lol@ this.

  • Ldub

Rose was injured. The season could have ended completely different. He is that impactful for his team. So yes unless they fall off and dont take the #1 spot in the East for the 3rd straight year. If Rose gets some help…some series help. They wont keep getting beat in the playoffs. But if the opposing team only has to focus on Rose…its going to be a problem every year…no matter what rank they pull thru the season!

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

The only way the Knicks can get rid of Amar’e is by using the amnesty clause on him. Knicks fans SHOULD know that. You can’t trade an overpaid player who has career shortening structural issues that are uninsured. Only the Knicks even have enough money to take a gamble on such a player….and he’s already on the roster.
The Knicks are nowhere near a championships. Nowhere even remotely close.

  • http://www.newyorkshockexchange.com Shock Exchange

Everybody wants to come to New York and play in front of 8 million people and bask in the adulation of that NYC media. However, if you are not Reggie and can’t produce in the clutch, NYC is the last place you wanna be … several major newspapers and thousands of bloggers going in every day. Players who came from other cities who have never had an unkind word said about them will soon see another side of NYC.

  • R32

There’s a stigma about New York Knicks basketball. Always had great talent but they always come up short.

  • http://www.pisforprops.com jadams12

If the Knicks can convince a Jason Kidd to come to NY then u never know. Whatever they do the CANNOT resign JR Smith that would be suicide to their chances

  • http://www.pisforprops.com jadams12

@NBK the Knicks do NOT have a amnesty clause. They used it on chauncey billups to free up room for Tyson Chandler

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Ahh my bad. Thanks ja, I totally forgot about that. The Knicks are in no mans land.

looooooooooool i just woke up and this is the 1st article I read. thanks ny for entertaining basketball fan around the globe. the only thing coming your way Melo is a gold medal.

  • http://slamonline.com 19821982

For what it’s worth, they have a better shot this year than last year. Even though that’s still not very good, optimism is good for him. Last year they played like they KNEW they were a terrible fit.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bMpEWfhsJtM danfields

the knicks r absolutely fine, wtf is wrong with u guys? knick fans r entertaining u? if major injuries spare the team this yr they gonna whip the floor with ur squads sorry a***es unless these teams names arent heat or thunder. at least they are even with anybody else. n i wouldnt call it no mans land.

  • Layzie

All of the top 5 picks of the 2003 draft class have won a ring except for Melo. It’s time for him to get his. I’m rooting for this guy.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Considering Melo is talking about a championship, and the Knicks have no chance at competing for one, they are in no man’s land. And I don’t have a team. So there is nothing to wipe the floor with.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bMpEWfhsJtM danfields

the only thing the roster is lacking are one or two nice backups at the 1 and 5 spot. everything else is absolutely fine, a 16-6 run under woodson was exactly what everyone expected of this team b4 the season n what dantoni wasnt capable of getting to go (he didnt fit into brick city anyway). ny has got defensive minded head coach and a very talented team. it would be a very big upset if he wouldnt get the offense to go during the summer.

  • http://www.newyorkshockexchange.com Shock Exchange

Wow. There’s “yellow top,” “WMD,” and bath salts. Dudes haven taken things too far … Now they’re smoking that “Bernard King.”

  • B.C.

No way he’s close to winning a championship, Carmelo will never win a title. He’s the ultimate team killer, all he cares about is his own stats. Only team that fit his style of play were the Nuggets now whatever team he continues to play for in the future he’s going to continue to be a selfish player. He’s just going to be one of those superstars like Karl Malone and Barkley that just simply isn’t going to win a title. So Carmelo + Title in the near future = No Chance.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

New York can’t add anyone. Plus, a defensive minded coach doesn’t make up for how absolutely terrible that team is defensively at the 1, 3, & 4. Sorry Dan, wing a Knicks fans doesn’t make what your saying true. No chamionship in anything in the remote future. Not even a slight chance.

The Wire or The Corner? I forget which one.

  • http://www.newyorkshockexchange.com Shock Exchange

Teddy-the-Bear See it’s not about territory anymore … Bout the product. Knicks have a “demand pull strategy.” That “Bernard King” pulls Knicks fans through the channel and gives them the illusion they gon win a ‘chip.

Fix this stupid ass issue SLAM. Ridiculous.

  • http://slamonline.com Mars

Great. Now people are gonna say Melo will never win a ring. But I think whoever is out west are the one who will be ringless. The Eastern conference is getting back to dominance. Think about it. OKC smashed all the good teams. But the east was tight all the way through. I think New York could steal a chip from Bron’ and the Heat one time. But they need to get Ray Allen before Miami does. Boston is a playmaker away from contender. New York needs to say healthy. Philly is scary. Indiana needs hunger. ATL needs Dwight.

  • http://slamonline.com Mars

…OH and the Bulls are D.um.b. DRose is the truth but ADIDAS ruins career. Sorry Sonny. Your welcome SLAM. Write an article on that. Sneaker brands that ruin careers. Myth or Fact? I’ll let y’all decide…..P.S. SLAM, when are y’all gonna hire me? I’m a homerun hitter when it comes to this ish. Anthony Davis is Greg Oden 2.O, and MKG is Durant 2.o.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bMpEWfhsJtM danfields

@nbk: sure they can add a backup, they still own the mle so that should be good for one addition. the numbers on defensive efficiency speak a different language, they r a top 5 top 10 defensive team. u saw only one knicks game this season?

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Nah they have the mini-MLe and they are using it to resign JR Smith.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Dan, their regular season defensive efficiency is 100% irrelevant in the playoffs. I know all about how good they are. And no, trust that of all the people to give a basketball opinion on this site, I am certainly not one to do it without watching the teams play. I know the Knicks are a top 5 team in the east, and will be for a couple more years. But they cannot take any steps forward. James Dolan forcing the Melo trade and then the Tyson Chandler signing completely crippled their ability to be flexible. The Amar’e signing was bad enough by itself. The rest was just horrid. Like havin a broken leg and shooting yourself in the spine in hopes that it somehow fixed it. Sorry bruh.

  • http://Slamonline nbk

So (the real me) hasn’t posted once here. This entire thread was the troll.

  • http://stuff Ugh

I think the odds are good that Melo goes the way of Charles Barkley and Patrick Ewing. There are only so many championships to go round over the next six or seven years and the Thunder, Bulls, Heat (ugh, the Heat) and even the Clippers have a better shot than the Knicks do.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/online/nba/2012/06/steve-nash-considers-new-york-knicks-a-better-option-than-brooklyn-nets/ danfields

i agree that it was a big mistake to give chandler a contract that big and to give up all that talent for melo instead of waiting for the offseason, then they wouldntve had to give up that much. but thats just the past. with shumpert back on board plus whoever they sign with their mle the knicks will be a legit contender. i am really convinced of that n will be the first one to eat my words if they wont get to the finals within the next three years. n i see the conference finals as a minimum this coming season. its just their time

  • http://slamonline Ugh

^How are they getting to the ECF? They have to have what it takes to defeat the all but one of the Celtics, the Heat, the Bulls, the Hawks, the 76ers. It’s not even a given they can beat any of those teams in a best-of-7, let alone all but one of them.

  • T-NYK

Carmelo is one of the greatest talents in the world and when hes in Great shape the greater he plays im not worried at all about melo. Amare on the other hand will be the key. Honestly i dont have much faith in him anymore and he doesn’t play with any ferocity. At all anymore. Melo is gona be great but the team will only go as far as amare takes melo. If amate can get back to “almost all star” caliber and become a better rebounder and melo a more willing passer. Which can be done. NYK will contend. They also need another pg besides lin maybe jason kidd. I still feel lin isnt ready. Hes not gonna be under the radar anymore. So we’ll see

  • http://www.slamonline.com/online/nba/2012/06/steve-nash-considers-new-york-knicks-a-better-option-than-brooklyn-nets/ danfields

on paper they are as good or better as any of these teams. its just a matter of weathrt they gel or not. n they r not overhauling the roster again so they will definetely come together especially after all they went through this year.

  • Bill

Sorry, but melo has always been a LOSER. Amare too. They were foolish to let Lin walk, he was their only true positive story. If its taken melo almost 10 years to be “committed” to winning, the bockers are screwed with him. He reminds me of nique’, selfish, flashy, highlights galore. But no ring. Dolan screwed up BIGtime. Like, as in, 10 more years of heartache. Dork.
