Danny Ferry Named GM of the Atlanta Hawks

What was speculation before has been made official. Danny Ferry is now in charge of commandeering the basketball ship in the A. From the Atlanta Hawks’ website: “The Atlanta Hawks announced today that Danny Ferry has been named President of Basketball Operations and General Manager. ‘Over the past nine years Danny Ferry has earned tremendous respect as a front office executive in the NBA,’ said Atlanta Hawks partner, Bruce Levenson. ‘His philosophy, character, and commitment to creating enduring and successful organizations exemplify exactly what we are looking for in a leader of the Atlanta Hawks. Danny’s systematic and value driven approach has helped him become one of the preeminent minds in basketball. He is passionate about building an organization the right way, knows how to win and knows how to forge winning teams. We look forward to having him as our leader of basketball operations.’ [...] ‘My family and I are thrilled to join the Hawks organization and Atlanta community,’ said Hawks new President of Basketball Operations and General Manager Danny Ferry. ‘There were many components that made this the right fit for me but clearly my confidence in the ownership group and their dedication to building a Championship caliber franchise was most important. They are committed to building with the right people and investing in critical areas for development; both essential elements if we want to create sustained success. ‘ Ferry’s contract is a multi-year deal the specifics of which were not disclosed.”

I don’t understand the notion of ‘recyclying’ GMs/Coaches. If a GM/Coach failed in one area, what makes someone think that they would succeed somewhere else? Danny Ferry regulalry failed to find LeBron a sidekick (He players around the greatest basketball talent presently in the league…and he’s supposed to figure out a cash strapped Hawks team?

Curious to see how this works out. I thought that Cle making the Finals the year the Spurs swept them really hurt the franchise’s chances of keeping LBJ and becoming a powerhouse. Instead of building a team that would’ve had a 3-4 year window of winning a championship (see OKC) by putting younger players around LBJ he could grow with, they had to put all plans on fast forward to compete right away. With that model Cle had to take on vets with big contracts in an effort to win “this year” rather than building effectively for 2-3 years down the road. That pressure won’t be an issue in Atl…

with the exception of varejao and damon jones, most of the players on the cleveland team were acquired through trades. hawks have some guys with value, i would expect to see a fair number of trades with ferry as GM, especially given that this current hawks team is not close to competing for a title. team should rebuild around horford and amnesty jj.
