Jared Sullinger Medically Red Flagged By NBA Doctors

Oh boy. After undergoing a series of medical tests at the NBA Draft combine last week in Chicago, Ohio State Buckeyes forward Jared Sullinger has been medically red flagged by NBA doctors, due to an ailing back that some believe could potentially shorten his NBA career. ESPN’s Chad Ford has the details: “Some have advised their teams not to draft him in the first round. Sullinger’s agent, David Falk, when reached via phone by ESPN.com said that he was not in a position to comment on the story. Sullinger’s father, Satch Sullinger, said he believes the issue isn’t that serious. ‘He had a bulging area that was due to his hamstring and quads being so tight,’ Satch Sullinger told ESPN.com senior college basketball writer Andy Katz in a phone call Monday afternoon. ‘It pulled on his hip flexor and he’s been taking care of it to loosen it. You can call it a red flag if you want. But it’s tight hamstring and tight quads. He’s been to doctors, he’s doing yoga and deep tissue massage. The flexibility is helping take the pressure off the area. We’ve got nothing to hide. At this stage it’s all about what they can’t do. Jared is a skilled player. A two-time All-American. He can play.’ Ohio State coach Thad Matta told Katz by text message Monday: ‘Jared is fine. He’s moving better than I’ve ever seen him move.’ In 2009, Pittsburgh’s DeJuan Blair was also red flagged by the NBA when medical tests at the NBA combine revealed he didn’t have ACL’s in either knee. At the time Blair was projected as a late lottery pick. He slid all the way out of the first round.”

The Slamonline Mock draft is officially BUSTED.

I wonder what losing 20-30 lbs would do to the stress on his back. Not saying he’s fat, but if he lost that weight, I’m guessing that could only help relieve the pressure on his back.

I would nut on myself if Sullinger slipped all the way to the second round the Spurs picked him up

This shouldn’t hurt is stock (emphasis on shouldn’t but not saying it won’t) because he’s definitely worth the risk. He had some back issues this past season, but he was still able to contribute greatly to his team and have a successful year. And, as some have already pointed out, JJ Redick was red-flagged before the draft and he still went no.11 overall. Some players are just worth the risk and Sullinger is one of them.

Dejuan Blair was medically red-flagged for his knees and looked how he turned out. Same thing goes for Danny Granger and Brandon Roy. Of course, we all know what happened to Roy, right? If Sullinger slips to the second round, he could be a steal like Blair.

If he does slide, I don’t see Danny Ainge letting him go past 21. But then again I am really hoping he drops to my bulls. He would be the perfect replacement for boozer. So let the bad news continue

Wonder what kind of medical tests they do on these guys–does it include MRIs?

This will def effect his stock, he project around the 7 -17 range now.But he really didn’t test well @ the combine, he was probably the worst athlete their. But kid has a good BB IQ and plays hard-tough break. He now late first round early 2nd @ best.I know he like killin self for staying school now. Last year he would probably been #2 or 3

Where was this test when Greg Oden was drafted?

  • B.C.

I know Jared personally and have played with him in recent months, he’s returning to the shape he was when he played AAU/HS ball, don’t listen to the rumors, because that’s all they are is rumors.

This is big-time bad news for Sullinger. If he has a bulging (herniated) disc it’s not due only to tight hamstrings or quads. Massage and flexibility helps but if he’s prone to disc inflammation impinging on the nerves it will only get worse banging in a longer NBA season with bigger, stronger guys. Look at what Amare Stoudemire and Baron Davis had to deal with recently and how long they were laid up due to bulging discs for an idea of what he may be up against. It doesn’t take much to set things off and be laid up an extended amount of time even with the care of top docs and training staff. I hope Sullinger can overcome this and play for a long time in the league.
