Jim Buss Says Lakers Won’t Make Any Major Roster Changes This Summer

The Los Angeles Lakers are entering yet another tumultuous offseason, and to the chagrin of legions of Purple & Gold fans, the guy in charge (Jim Buss) – who continues to come under fire from people he used to employ — says the team likely won’t be making any major roster changes this summer. Per the LA Times: “TV analyst Magic Johnson has called out Lakers honcho Jim Buss, while also wondering in a tweet why Kobe Bryant isn’t doing the same every day. In online excerpts from an interview Phil Jackson did with HBO, Jackson is asked why Jim Buss has ‘chosen to almost disassemble so much of what you’ve built?’ And now the Lakers don’t have a starting point guard on their roster, with Ramon Sessions opting out of his contract. […] What are the chances of the Lakers starting the season with Bryant, Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol all in Lakers uniforms? ‘Very good,’ says Buss. So you don’t agree with those who say the Lakers must turn Gasol into two or three players via a trade? ‘No,’ he says. ‘I think changes are going to be made moving Pau lower to the basket. We can improve that way with a change in coaching strategy rather than a change in personnel.’ No moves? ‘We will try to sign Sessions when the rules allow beginning in July,’ he says. ‘And improve the bench.’ No major free-agent signings, no blockbuster trades? ‘No,’ he says.”

    He’s lying
    or I hate him

  • bdogg

if we can get gay for pau i am all in! i want to uptempo the offense..that should be priority!

  • JML-G

Lakers aint no contenders anymore, thats for sure

  • reydavidgamboa

Wow. Buss could be a pretty loyal man to his team, or a pretty crazy one believing Lakers still have a chance.

  • Ldub

There is no way that Grizz give up Gay. Not unless its for Bynum. Pau doesnt make sense because the have Gasol and Zbo. Gay is the one they probably wouldnt get rid of.

Need a Point Guard. Steve Blake isn’t a starter.

  • Drew

    Another disappointing season then /:

  • pLayYz

damn slam messing up!! I posted that last one not drew lol

  • http://Somethingsomething. Ugh

    …what?

  • http://Somethingsomething. Ugh

Like, seriously. What? Mike Brown isn’t going to turn this pig’s ear of a team into a silk purse, Kim. You need to do something.

  • http://thahiphopcorner.com Kevin

Either he seriously thinks this team can contend the way it is or honestly doesnt give 2 f**ks anymore…..im starting to think it’s the latter

  • http://Slamonline.com Gab

Good. That way the Lakers can officially be counted out of making a conference finals. No more talk about Jordan-lite being on par with his Airness in terms of rings.

  • http://thahiphopcorner.com Kevin

Kobe need to switch back to #8

When Keeping from Doing a Deal Goes Wrong…

  • Rainman

    He’s a dumb@ss.

  • Josh

He’s got to be bluffing. Gasol needs to go. Bynum needs to grow up. Trading Gasol would bring back a starting PG, a solid swingman off the bench and probably a defensive ace off the bench. Odom will probably be back in Lakers gold as well.

  • Dee

Ben Gordon, Raymond Felton, Andre Miller, Andre Igudolab Brandon Bass would be upgrades over most of the players on the current roster…Jim Buss need to get on his job! and while you’re at it, get rid of Mike Brown. Jerry Sloan needs work!

  • Exile

Mamba bite coming your way soon.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

I like how he hired Mike Brown.
    Loves Mike Brown.
    Plans to keep Mike Brown…
but doesn’t like the way he coaches…
    AWESOME

  • McWill

hahaha this is hilarious…it took them losing in the 2nd round of the playoffs to realize that Pau Gasol isn’t a high post player? lol smh…PJax was right, expanding Bynum role was a mistake, even though Bynum was an all-star this year, giving him the majority of the low post touches affected Gasol’s game.
Laker fans forget that it was less than two years ago when they were calling Gasol the best offensive post player in the game, and now they wanna trade him? Ridiculous. Here’s my theory: Jim Buss is right, they are not going to trade anybody or make any big signings. Mitch brought in Gasol so they aren’t gonna get rid of him, and the Buss’s love Bynum so he won’t be traded, so they are just gonna use their limited cap space and sign people.

Cosign Lakeshow. The issue is obviously with Buss’ POV on how winning works. You can’t hire a coach and not like how he coaches. That makes you the coach and him the figure head. And I hate to break it to those who don’t know, but Jim Buss is a notoriously bad team builder. This is his second chance, his first? Remember when Kobe didn’t make the playoffs in the middle of his prime? Yeah. That.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

And everyone who knows about Mile Brown knew the Lakers offense was going to dramatically regress. So you can’t really blame him for not knowing what he’s doing, you have to blame the guy that hired him.

  • FnF

Regardless of how you feel, Mike Brown is still a Coach of the Year winner.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

So is Sam Mitchell. You know who isn’t? Jerry Sloan. It’s safe to say that award is about as important as the all-defensive team. If you preside over a team that does better than expected (the key being expected) then you can win the award. So knowing that, it’s safe to assume being the coach of the team that LeBron hits his prime on will net almost any coach a COY award. Because that guy means 50 wins to whatever team he plays on. Hence Cleveland’s record as soon as he left.

  • bike

Can’t help but think if PJ was still coaching this team as is, LA would be a serious contender. At least for another year or two.

  • R32

Its Steve Blake’s time to become an all-star! (not serious)

  • rand33p

if they improve the bench and somehow get a decent PG, they don’t need to move Pau… now if there is a possibility to get a really good PG and some really good bench help then they should move Pau.. Kobe and Andrew obviously should not/will not be moved

  • queazy

    Pau to the Hawks!

  • PaytonTheSneakerAddict

You Can Maybe Get A Veteran Andre Miller, Who Can Show That Leadership When Its Crunch Time, I Would Waive Steve Blake Pick Up Miller And Sessions Sessions Would Be A Great Sixth Man As Averaged 10.5 Points And 5.2 Assists Behind Kyrie Irving He Could Learn behind Miller

  • B.C.

Jim Buss needs to get fired ASAP! This man does not know what he is doing, he still believes they can win a title with Pau on the roster, they just can’t. Leave it to your old man Jim and let him take charge.

  • FnF

@NBK, I agree with you, aside from the 3-point contest award all of the other accolades given out are a joke. However, during the negotiation process, players and coaches who have those awards clearly get a boost in value. Stackhouse keeps landing on someone’s roster. Doc Rivers won the award being .500 and missing the playoffs. Won’t see that happen again. Mo WIlliams, no matter how bad he plays, no matter how many games he fades away, no matter how many puffs commercials he does, he will land on someone’s team.

  • http://www.google.com/news BETCATS

You can’t fire an owner, B.C.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

^I’m sure he’ll get right on firing himself B.C.

  • http://Slamonline.com 19821982

Well then good luck, cause you’re really going to need a healthy dose of it…

  • Ldub

They cant win with Pau on the roster? If you put Pau in a comfortable position and not 15 feet away from the basket, he is probably the best skilled big man at the 4 spot. His ability to score with either hand isnt common anymore. He is arguably the best passing big man in the L today. If Brown were to come up with an offense where you can have both bigs in the paint, Pau would be very effective (just like he was in the prev 2 years when they won).

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

I personally think I’d do a better job building this Laker squad into more of a contender, and I’m only 17. Jim Buss is just….idiotic. If he stays in his position of power, we’re gonna be set back years, and as soon as Kobe retires it’ll be ’05 all over again, but without Kobe, so it’s ever WORSE.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Hossy

haha he has to say that if he goes out and says “ya pau sucks we want to move him” everyone will just give him a low ball offer. he just wants to keep pau’s value up

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

BP, i’d trust you over Jimmy boy also.

  • http://www.hiphopdx.com/ Big Game James

I guess Jim Buss likes second round playoff exits

  • RunNGun

Trade Kobe to the Knicks. Make it happen, Buss.

  • heyheyhey

    lets sign Reymon Felton!!!!

  • PnoyVibe

Jim Buss is getting too old

  • B.C.

@BETCATS and LakeShow, he’s not the owner of the team his father is. He’s just in command because Dr. Buss is old. Dr. Buss needs to fire his son because he clearly isn’t good for the franchise nor business.
