Kevin Durant Led OKC Thunder to Game 1 Win Over the Miami Heat

by Marcel Mutoni @marcel_mutoni

Round 1 of the dream superstar showdown in the NBA Finals went to Kevin Durant, decisively.

The Durantula scored 17 of his game-high 36 points in the fourth quarter last night, as the OKC Thunder took the opener of the series after trailing throughout the first half.

OKC’s young guns showed impressive poise down the stretch, before cruising past a seemingly tired Miami Heat team (which had just survived a grueling 7-game series against the Boston Celtics.)

From the Sun-Sentinel:

And, just like that, there was a 105-94 loss Tuesday night at Chesapeake Energy Arena and a 1-0 deficit in these best-of-seven NBA Finals. “We were thinking we were putting ourselves in a position to win, and then they just went away,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. More to the point, Thunder forward Kevin Durant took it away, scoring 17 of his 36 points in the fourth quarter. It was the second-highest-scoring Finals debut, behind only the 48 points of the Philadelphia 76ers’ Allen Iverson. “We need to keep our bodies in front of him,” Spoelstra said of Durant, “but that’s much easier said than done.”

Durant said it took a relentless approach to overcome the Heat and LeBron James. “Every time out, our coaches were saying, ‘Play harder! Play harder!” and that’s what we did.” Especially Durant. “We just had to make a second effort,” he said. “The only adjustment we made was playing harder. It’s a team game. Everybody has to come to play. Everybody played hard in the second half.”

The Miami Heat will need more production from people not named LeBron James going forward. LBJ chipped in 30 points and 9 boards last night, but got very little support from his teammates in the second half when the Thunder made their run.

It’s still very early in the series, and it would behoove everyone not to overreact to the Game 1 outcome. That being said, Kevin Durant and the OKC Thunder sent an unmistakable message last night: they are very much in the driver’s seat.

tpath….i understand what ur saying. But the generation has changed. There is so much talk and comparison to rings, that is the only thing that matters. And with the huge talent/potential talent on any team (OKC is a perfect example)…you have to aline yourself with talent. Sometimes its by your own choice (ala James)…sometimes its based on the coaches doing (ala OKC). That team was pieced together perfectly. Similar to larry bird and the pacers. You look for specific things in certain ppl and you obtain it to compete. Now on the salary side…Jordan was too arrogant to think otherwise, and at that time, he should have been. But now…I dont think he would have the same mentality. Not with all these stars and talented players. Yes he had pip and kerr and rodman…But if he wanted to compete with the other teams…im sure he would make the proper steps to ensure that he had some help along the way. Jordan couldnt do it all on his own, and for anyone to think he ever did in his 6 championship runs is crazy. He has enormous will power. But you cant will your team to win alone. Not in todays game with so much talent.

Is 2 mil a year going to make or break your family (as far as making sure they are stress free)? you can easily choose between 10mil a year (with your core group) or 12mil a year w/o. Youre in the same tax bracket. Once you reach are certain income…it becomes pennies and nickels. Im just saying what I would do. Not expecting everyone/anyone else to agree. I know that I could take care of myself and my fam on a certain budget. I dont need the extra to “make sure” that happens. If Im paying for everything, trust and believe they will be happy and satisfied with the house and cars i put them in (should i choose). because at the end of the day, regardless of my career or income, if i am doing it and not you…can you really complain?

In this Case Numbers do Lie! Someone answer this, when the game came down to the fourth quarter why didn’t Lebron Hold Kevin Durant? My answer is Lebron Just cant hold the kid or is scared. Durant made sure he match up with james though? cant put a 6’4 wade on a 7′ft Durant.

ldub, you’ll never know how you would handle that much money until you’re in that situation.
maybe you wouldn’t trip off making 50-60k as a professional baller, but what about your family? can you say the same thing about them, especially if they know you should be making millions?
i dunno, it’s not a good thing to sell yourself short, especially if you know you’re worth much more. that extra 2 million is still 2 million, and in an economy like this with inflation skyrocketing, you gotta save up as much as you can while you can.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

how about most improved troll? I used to put links to lil penny commercials on the manager of fruit of the looms blog.

this has been hilarious. when did troll nbk join the Slam Fam? btw, shout out to SLAM for having others info on the comment box. I almost commented as nbk too.
    —-
anyone noticed wade was very hesitant with his moves? it’s like he’s second guessing all his actions, especially after dribbles, he’d picked up the ball to pass or shoot, but because of his hesitance, he ended up holding the ball with the clock winding that and the heat with a bad offensive possession.

  • davidR

albie, i think he has some kind of nagging injury that isn’t being reported. cuz he doesn’t look good out there

  • http://slamonline.com The Philosopher

Wade has many miles on him.
    Getting his knee drained…
He’s clearly in decline, and is past his prime. Although, still an impact player. With heart.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Im with Philo on JTaylor, definitely MIC this season

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Philo, Kobe has miles on him, KG has miles on him, TD has miles on him, Wade has played in only 596 career games (compared to 689 for his draft class mate, LeBron). A broke jumpshot, unwillingness to attack the rim/post up consistently and decline in explosivenss are the biggest/most visible problems plauging Wade.
