Kevin Garnett Not Retiring, Will Return to the Boston Celtics For Three More Seasons

Hope you didn’t waste any effort planning Kevin Garnett’s retirement party. According to the Boston Herald, the lanky big man has informed the Boston Celtics that he’ll be returning to the team for the ’12-13 season, and potentially a year or two after that: “Kevin Garnett is staying with the Celtics. The Herald has learned this morning that Garnett has informed the club he will be back. The 36-year-old considered retirement, but ultimately decided to return for an 18th NBA season — and more. According to an NBA source and a source close to Garnett, the sides are working out the details of a deal that will be for at least two years and could possibly include a third. ‘The decision came down to whether KG wanted to keep playing,’ said one source. ‘And once he decided that he did, it was going to be Boston. He wasn’t going to leave Doc (River) and those guys and play anywhere else.’”

UPDATE: The deal is set, reports Yahoo!‘s Marc Spears. Three years, $34 million.

    Hate KG!!!! Ugh!

  • spurs4life

KG + Fab Melo= Best Defensive Frontcourt in the League

  • Bravo

Rather see you in different colors

  • el_larsen

    greeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeat news!!
he ll show fab melo how it s done
hope the truth and kg will retire as celtics

  • eyal

wow!!! He is my favourite player forever, but he is not worth 34M$ too old.

  • Greg

what? no press ups? Love the gushing when it comes to this always overpriced vet…

  • http://slam FLIGHT 9

Heat will not repeat!!!!!!!!!! JARED, KG, FAB MELO!!!!!!!!!! WOW!!!!

  • Feez_22

The celtics are looking pretty stacked right about now… sullinger off the bench, fab melo starting with garnett, rondo/bradley/pierce… if i am ray allen i come back and accept a 6th man role. this celts team can seriously be dangerous next year. should i say finals bound?

  • http://www.slamonline.com spit hot fiyah

waaaay to much money at this stage of his career, they might be screwed for the next few years. they need to re-sign bass also, unless they plan to replace him with sully.

  • TheWhiteMarkPrice

Yeeeeeesssss!!!!!! I was seriously bummed the F out at the thought of KG retiring. Or playing anywhere else really. Pierce & KG walk away together in green.

  • TheWhiteMarkPrice

He is pretty damn expensive though. 34mil.???? Hope that contract is heavy on the front end.

  • gubbins

League wouldn’t be the same without his aggro chops staring everyone down. Will be good for Sullinger & Melo too.

  • Jake

Didn’t matter how much they signed him for, or how old he is. It’s like buying a car part you need in the middle of nowhere. You’re f$ked without it.

  • Antonio

The Big Ticket tonight yesssssssssssssssssss, best power forward with TD in the history, only and legend.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Dagger

I like KG and he played great at centre this year, but that is a lot of money to spend on an aging, injury-prone vet. There’s every possibility that Pierce and KG will both see a major dropoff in production, even if they aren’t injured. I just don’t see this team getting past a healthy Heat.

  • Heals

In the words of the immortal StackBundle$ “SooooooooWooooooooooooooooooopppp!” Glad to see I get at least 2 more years of K “bleeepin” G. This isn’t so much about getting another chip as it is establishing a team mentality and getting vets to instill work ethic/team attitude for Rajon and his running partners in 3 years…

Cheers to you Heals *drinks up

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7C0vd-L5lg Munky

He is not worth that type of money.

  • Ernie D

They now can decide what to do with Brandon Bass, Ray Allen and Jeff Green. They might decide to go in a different direction with all 3. I would try and keep Bass, and do a sign and trade with Green. They need guys who can crash the boards.

  • http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine VanCityBBall

drive by rondo and pierce if u can but right behind that is a brick wall of FAB MELO AND KG.

  • http://Buckthetrapup.com DopeBoiGD

Wrong move by KG. it woulda been nice to see him sign with San Antonio. But truth is Garnett has one ring…. And why would he sacrifice millions for another one. I don’t think Garnett’s legacy or status will change if he gets another ring. But if he wins Finals MVP it will.

Kobe has 5 rings but 2 finals MVPs
Jordan has 6 rings but 6 finals MVPs

  • King Marcus

What’s with all the hub-bub about the 34mln? It’s over 3 years folks! That gives the Celtics more financial flexibility than they had before. And isn’t it strange how quickly folks forget that this was the guy who carried our team through the post season. Should they have not paid him a respectable salary? There are guys in the league who do a lot less than K.G. does for a lot more money. Give the man his props!

  • O

3 years at $34 mill is tooo much on both sides of the ball. The most he should’ve gotten was 2 years at 20 mil. And that still would’ve been a lot in my opinion. He should be a good mentor for Fab tho.

  • http://gmail.com Gangsta

Now let the Celtics prarty!!!!!! I really think they gonna be contenders next season.

  • Basketball iQ

Now all the haters can rest…
    “hes retiring..”
“Hes going to miami to win another ring…”
    “…San Antonio bound.”
    “Laker-Land baby!”

PS- Ray wont slide somewhere and play for a ring for peanuts. At the end of day, its still about money.
    And hes gonna start soooo

34million for 3 yrs for a 36yr old guy who earned more than 200m during his career? come on kg u greedy lil b***ard. am glad to see he didnt retire tho

  • Your Friendly Neighborhood Dopeman

11 million per year? Seems about right to me. He still an elite player even past his prime. He taking almost 50% less than he made last year which was about 21.2 million. I like it.

  • http://www.slamonline.com phsyco B

All these people saying its too much money are fools. Its over 3 years. And he put up almost 20 and 10 in the playoffs! The celts still have some money to play with and resign jeff green and brandon bass and hopefully a few solid role players. With KG, bass(hopefully) Sullinger. Melo and Steimsma that a solid, defensive minded front court. Rondo and Bradley in the backcourt making life a nightmare for opposing guards, peirce, bass and kg up front. Jeff green as 6th man. Sullinger can take a load off kg offensively and steisma and melo clogging up the lane. All thats needed is some backcourt help, i don’t think ray ray’s coming back, and it’ll be alright. Players love playing for Doc so they might get a steal in free agency. Go Celts!

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

I wonder if all these commenters will think the same thing when 39 year old Garnett is cashing a $12 million paycheck.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

I think KG is worthy of such a contract for a cat 17yrs in the L based off his performance last season/during the playoffs and a lack of quality bigs/5s in the L today.

  • http://www.slamonline.com big_ticket

KG deserves that boatload of money…he is one of a kind..

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7C0vd-L5lg Munky

@ Redd: It happens to me all the time. Idk what’s up with that.

  • Herbz

At first, I found 34m is too much.
Then I thought about it. How many guys can average near 20 and 10 in the playoffs? Plus his presence will help those 2 rookies big men’s growth.

I won’t expect him to play as much in the regular season.
But i absolutely believe he will show up at peak form when playoff comes.

  • http://slamonline.com LLC#12

That is a LOT of money, by the 3rd year of that deal he won’t even be able to play enough minutes to warrant those earnings surely! I thought he would take a bigger cut so they could try and re-tool for another run..If Ray Allen is expecting the same kinda money, then hes going to have a long summer..

  • Clydesays

After that last NBA deal there is no way KG was going to play anywhere for less than 10 mil. Glad be’s back, but I’d. E shocked if he plays year three. Like everyone said great mentor for all the C’s big men…

  • cjay

aye if people like juwan howard and kurt thomas still playin why not the warrior kg

  • http://www.nba.com/knicks danfields

i think that his play is worth the 11mio per year compared to many other big men and their market value. but i dont understand why he doesnt say smth like “i earned more than 200mio during 17 yrs so lets have another serious title run, i take 5 to 3mio a year n we get another quality free agent”. greed is not good people ^^

  • El Black Mamba

I’m glad he didn’t retire KG is one of a kind… But 34 mil for 3 yrs?… “Anything is posssiiiblllee”

  • Megalo

34 million for a 36-year old? Is Danny Ainge smoking crack?

  • mike

The countdown has begun. Three years at max to watch the career of one favorite players end. Damn celts, did ainge forget about the salary cap?

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

This is fine actually. KG has plenty left in the tank and if they get a healthy Green back then KG can save things for the playoffs… This Celtics team will be top 4 in the East.

  • Robb

it took until king marcus for these comments to make sense, yall are slipping SLAM.

  • http://www.slamonline.com raylan

3rd year of the deal is not fully guaranteed. That makes the deal acceptable.
I’m not sure if Bass will be a priority. They have Sullinger now, and in a rookie deal. They should re-sign Ray and Green. Then a back up for Rondo.

  • TP

This is the best basketball news I’ll hear all off-season. Can’t wait to see KG on the court again.

  • http://www.twitter.com/_dfrance dfrance21

Glad he’s coming back. The $34 million sounds like a lot, maybe it is a lot, but you can’t always put a price on intangibles. Sometimes you just have to pay a guy if he’s genuinely gonna make your team better. The C’s know KG’s worth.

  • tpathi1

if KG plays the way he has been playing in the postseason this year, then the money is well spent

  • LA Huey

co-sign Heals. Good deal for KG, Boston, and those who love the bad blood between the Celtics and Heat
