LeBron James Unhappy With Fouling Out in Game 4 Loss

by Marcel Mutoni @marcel_mutoni

There was LeBron James, looking on helplessly from the bench as his team had a golden opportunity to push the Boston Celtics to the brink of elimination by taking a 3-1 series lead.

When Dwyane Wade’s last-second three rimmed out, James was visibly devastated, and now the Eastern Conference Finals are all knotted up at two games apiece.

In his postgame comments, LeBron disagreed completely with the call that had him ushered out of the contest. Pat Riley was also less than pleased with the calls in a more general sense.

Per the AP and Yahoo! Sports:

“I’d rather be on the floor,” James said. “I don’t foul out,” said James, whose sixth foul was an offensive foul underneath the Miami basket. “If I’m going to foul out, that sixth foul, I wish I would have earned it and it had actually been a foul on me. Whatever.”

“It’s a typical night in the Boston Garden,” Heat president Pat Riley said before exiting his team’s postgame locker room.

This was the first time since 2008 that LeBron James fouled out of a game, and the only time it has happened to him in the postseason.

The series now moves on to Miami for the all-important Game 5 on Tuesday night. Here’s to hoping all of the key players will be on the floor when it’s time to decide the outcome of that one.

What a bunch of whiny children.

  • http://Nothing Gavin

Fuck that shit, that foul was a piece of shit. KG ripped Bron but allBrob did was back down in the post. No foul, shit call cost Miami the game, fuck you ref’s.

  • Heals

Once again they’re not bias, just poor/inconsistent at their job. All C’s fans know if there was a “fix” BillKennedy and JoeyCrawford would be the top guys for the job. Yet here we are 2-2…

  • http://www.slamonline.com Alf

Saw the game, I thought the refs were pretty consistent down the line with calls….
The one on Paul Pierce to get him outta the game was questionable too.

As JVG says: “let the boys play on…”

  • http://slamonline.com The Philosopher

Now, it is a real series.

  • ClydeSays

I know the reality is that LBJ sells tickets, gets ratings & the League wants to see him on the floor playing, not on the bench, but the idea that a 6’8″ 260 pd forward would average less than 3 fouls in the Playoffs FOR HIS CAREER is crazy. I mean, on that play he basically bowled over, then sat down on Pietrus. What else could the refs call? He did do the same thing to Rondo in an earlier game & the call went against RR, so maybe that’s what he’s complaining about…

  • Zack

    Bowled over?? No way.

  • http://www.twitter.com/_dfrance dfrance21

It was karma for that BS offensive foul they called on KG when him and LeBron were battling in the post.

  • Da-Meat-Hook

@ ClydeSays, Lebron got low and backed his man down to establish good position, it’s a basic fundamental that big men are taught to do at a very early age. In no way shape or form was that an offensive foul. I thought Lebron’s last 3 foul calls were questionable, but then again, the C’s have gotten horrible calls since game one. That Pierce call was absolutely brutal.

This is the second time Wade had the ball with time running out down 2(same scenario against the Knicks). This is also the second time he settled for a contested 3 at the last second, leaving no time for a second chance put back. The Heat have gotta get a better quality shot than that!

that was actually a double foul dfrance which gave lbj his 4th foul. 4 of lebron 6 fouls were highly questionable. back to south beach

  • oytun

    Here’s a video compilation of both James and Pierce’s 6 fouls: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XOKVo3kY0pc

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Meh, whining about the refs is weak.
It’s also weak the amount of hypocrisy coming from Boston fans who did the same thing after Game 2.
    At least be consistent fans.

  • kobesBESTfriend

when Joey Crawford called that 6th foul on Bron he was so animated u would think he was the 1 that drew the foul…freaking glory hound…let the boys play ref!!!

  • http://slamonline.com rr

i dont here no one complaining now about how biased the refs are

  • http://www.twitter.com/_dfrance dfrance21

@Mubwar I’m pretty sure it was just an offensive foul on KG. If it was a double foul, Bos wouldn’t have lost possesion. I think JVG mentioned that as a case where he thought it should have been a double foul.

  • noblenator15

Lebron needs to stop whining they have gotten the calls all series

  • What
  • Top$helf

That double foul call was garbage

  • http://www.soundcloud.com/tray-5 T-Ray

The first time he ever fouled out in the PO?! I was laughing so hard when they called that kick ball on the inbounds play and gave Boston another 14 secs on the shot clock. LeBron went ape sh*t and they didn’t hit him with that tech.

  • Drig

Refs were inconsistent throughout the game. In OT, PP was taken out on a questionable call. Seriously, I think OKCvsSpurs and BosvsMia refs need to be reshuffled a bit. Because OKC is getting away with ridiculous screens while guys in this series are being called out for honestly, average stuff.

  • http://hoopspeak.com/2012/05/enough-about-lebron-and-his-fouls/ nbk

Where’s O to talk about how there is a fix…….? Oh right

  • thenatural

This series is better than the Spurs/Thunder and ultimately will be better than the Finals, regardless of who’s playing.

The NBA wants this series to go to 7 games, which is evident by the officiating.

Honestly though,I’m surprised Wade didn’t claim he was fouled on that last 3 ball last night…

  • al

    LeBalls, grow some….

  • http://stapledesign.com Spaceship Jay

Meh, he did the same to KG on the other end around…. 30 seconds before.

  • Ill Smith

Whatever Bron. All that damn whining you do to the ref be glad you don’t get a tech after every shot attempt that doesn’t go in. As for the refereeing, it was even….meaning it sucked all across the board. Battier flopped like hell to foul Pierce out. That phantom walk Joey Crawford called on KG. & the BS double foul. Life goes on, stop blaming the refs. Especially when they’re on the payroll when y’all are in South Beach. Grow a pair & keep it moving.

  • Speems

Oh so the Heat are the whiners. Weird because Boston is the team who has been talking about the refs ALL SERIES LONG!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Nick Tha Quick

If Ray Allen got a technical in Game 1 for jumping up and walking away after a questionable call, then I don’t see why Lebron didn’t get a technical for the same thing after he thought he deflected the ball and they called a kick ball. But what’s the playoffs without the annual whining about the refs?

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Nick, that Tech on Ray Allen wasn’t warranted. If you see an absolutely terrible call are you really going to complain when the refs actually get it right later? This is the same thing.

  • Sizzle

Officiating has been bad both ways, but last night was just baffling. The double foul on KG/LeBron was absolute trash. As Van Gundy said “What did LeBron do?” The foul called on Pierce when he fouled out was also equally as bad. LeBron’s foul out was suspect at best. He established position and then Pietrus pulled the chair out from under him but fell over (over blowing the contact). I swear in this series, whenever someone falls over whether it was a foul or not they call something. That is also the first time I have ever seen a kicked ball call where the inbounder purposely through it off his leg (was the top portion of his leg I think too). KG’s phantom travel. Pierce’s travel and1. It’s pathetic. I think the league wants to see this go 7 games.

  • Ldub

How in the hell does anyone consider this whining? He said “I dont foul out of games”. And his track record speaks for itself considering it was the very first time he fouled out in a Heat uniform! He understands his value to the team and puts a concerned effort in not fouling out. All night there were some “iffy” calls. But hey it happened on both ends. Obviously because Im not a C’s fan…I would love for all of the calls to go against them, but because Im a basketball fan before I am a Heat fan…I understand that wont be the case. The double foul on KG and LJ was ridiculous. Just as the call on LBJ against MP. You cant hook someone and then as your falling backwards bring them down with you. LBJ had a right to try and obtain position. Either that is a no call or a call against MP. And the foul against PP running over Battier was weak too. Still yet to understand how Wade can bump Pierce in the air with no call and take the ball, yet a ticky tack foul like Battier falling over gets called. Love the game of basketball but the calls are bad at times. Either way….LETS GO HEAT…back to south beach! close it out!

  • furiousfunkfanatic

He is the King! And the referees are his royal servants who have to obey all his wishes and clear his path to the rim. Because it is his one and only lordship of basketball ruler of all courts and all calls on earth!

  • D’bri

was at the game, refs were awful both ways and have been terrible the whole series. officiating remains the bastard child the NBA refuses to recognize. last night wasn’t as bad as game 2, which was a job, but there were plenty of terrible calls, including 3 or 4 on pierce and bron both. bill kennedy is the worst, moreso than crawford. do not get how he gets assigned.

  • MeloMan15

That call was terrible… BUT, the amount of stuff Lebron has gotten away with, and the amount of horrible calls that have been called against the celtics and any other team against miami makes this well deserved

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Man, I can’t believe people didn’t notice KG freaking GRABBING LeBron’s arm to prevent him from rotating on Rondo’s drive.
Y’all realize that’s what happened, right? Ignore the stupidity of Mike Breen. Garnett grabbed LeBron so he couldn’t rotate. That’s why the foul was called on KG. The call was made before they two players even fell down.

  • MeloMan15

Game 2 was completely different. The Celtics got ripped off in game two… In Game 4 both teams got ripped off

  • JL

Heat are big time floppers. Chalmers flopped so many times the ref’s were ignoring times when he would get bumped. Stop falling down like a child. Battier somehow got that call when he just flopped down when a Celtic stuck an arm out. Lebron and KG call KB actually had Lebron’s hand held, so he couldn’t go help on defense. But Lebron pulled his arm back so hard that KG fell on him, creating an offensive foul. That’s pretty ridiculous. Although I don’t think the Celtics would have won on that play either cuz Rondo go denied. When Lebron fell on Pietrus after he pulled the chair on him, you have to call something or else players can fall on players on the floor whenever they want.

The question Heat fans should be asking is why Lebron took a fadeaway 20 footer when Rondo was guarding him for the last shot in regulation. Drive in and get a foul call man. I know he can make that shot, but a layup or freethrow is so much higher in pct.

  • the king

Call the game = that all!!!! The heat are a get to the basket team the C’s shot jumpers one team should get more calls. that’s y LBJ shot’s more FT’s then Kobe or KD the same for D-Rose he go’s to the rim a team or a players playing style should dictate that

  • Zack

That KG call was a good one. Refs didn’t see him grab Bron’s arm and that’s not what they called, but at the end, the call was made as it should have been. Pros are sneaky, especially KG. I’m sure stuff like that goes on all the time.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Nick Tha Quick

@ nbk I keed, I keed. On an honest note though, KG knows what he’s doing when he grabs Lebron’s arm. 90% of the time, the ref will not see that but will see Lebron’s hand in there and call it against the defender. This time it didn’t work. Just like Rio’s flop. We can complain about it all day long but it’s impossible to get these type of calls correct consistently at game speed especially the holding calls.

  • Bruce

This double foul stuff is ridiculous in many cases. It did look like Garnett had locked LeBron’s arm(from the replay), if the ref couldn’t see that it is understandable, but just don’t make any call at all if you can’t determine the miscreant(sorry,I couldn’t think of a better word). A little incident like that is certainly not worth tacking on a sixth foul to Garnett and a fifth foul on LeBron . As for the “kick”,I’m with Sizzle,LeBron was totally stationary
and the ball was thrown to go off his legs out of bounds, only trouble is LeBron’s reflexes are so quick he was able to keep it from going out of bounds. That was an absurd call. As for the call that fouled Lebron out, impossible to tell even from the replay. If the ref saw it,good eyesight and good call,if not and it was “makeup call” because Garnett fouled out, that just doubled the error.
Frankly,I agree with fans who think Crawford is way too much a part of the game. The guy loves drama and having the camera on him(with his looks I have no clue why,if I looked like that I would avoid the camera at all costs). He is over sensitive and at times blatant in his prejudice against certain players(Rasheed Wallace,Tim Duncan for two). He should never be reffing important games like conference finals or NBA finals. No place for a thin skinned showboating referee, these are important games. I don’t think you can pin the final result on Crawford, but there have been some other very crucial games in his career that his calls did influence. The NBA should not chance having a volatile ref like that in these important games.
Lastly, and off topic,I’ve been making some negative comments about Kobe being a poor teammate by overdribbling, not moving the ball and take too many low percentage shots rather than giving up the ball. Now it is Lebron’s turn. LeBron is a very good teammate and has no trouble sharing the ball, but he is Kobe like with his overdribbling and wasting shot clock. The big difference is that in LeBron’s case he waits way too long and doesn’t take the shot(at least Kobe has about a 30% chance of making the shot when he does it,LeBron because he wastes so much time almost insures that his team won’t score),he tries to pass to an open or half open teammate but in most cases he is too late and the ball is either intercepted because the defense is anticipating the pass or not one the teammate can handle comfortably and get a good shot off in time.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Nick Tha Quick

By a show of hands, how many guys actually read through lengthy, 3 paragraph comments?

  • the king

    i do

  • http://www.twitter.com/_dfrance dfrance21

    Define “read through”

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Whenever Joey Crawford and Ken Mauer are reffing games, expect lots of sh*tty calls.

  • http://www.anniebach.com/images/satyr_model_anniebach.jpg LakeShow

Haha, not raising my hand fella.
I mean if one of the regulars is talking about something worth while i’ll read it, but there’s always some guy named “Fred”, or “Bob” that goes on and on about who knows or cares what. It’s usually something they are passionate about, but no one else is so it just goes ignored.
Good stuff though. Keep em’ coming.

  • houstonrahoyt

Lebron pulled a fast one on KJ to pull him down. Pietrus just did the same to Lebron. Don’t forget Battier’s jump up front of PP and crumble to the ground to get 6th on The Truth. Bottom line, DWade choked on it.

  • Mack

There were bad calls either way people get over it. Pierce fouled out on a questionable call too and there were a couple fouls called that should have been “play-ons” but to focus on only Lebrons foul as the reason Miami lost is stupid.

  • O

Ugly game all around as far as the calls go. It seemed like if the refs made a bad call on the C’s then they’d make up for it with a bad call on the Heat and vice versa. Hard as they try to seem impartial with it, they ain’t letting the Heat miss the Finals especially if Oklahoma City knocks off the Spurs. That would be the Finals that Stern can’t allow to never happen…

  • http://www.slamonline.com Nick Tha Quick

If I was DannyG, I’d be beside myself that PP didn’t mention me as one of the top 5 small forwards that Lebron didn’t have to contend with in the playoffs. Next time I play the Celtics, it would be ON. Perk stare-downs all game long!

  • Jeff

The referees are the easiest to be paid off in a game like this. Better check ref crawford’s tax returns versus the amount of assets he has and the goods and services he and his family receives.

Boston Gardens have always been biased, they turn up the temperature, probably spike the air and water surrounding the visiting team’s locker, have one of their coaches sneak out and look at television to see what the 76′ers are planning long ago in the Doctor J days, come back and know exactly what play will be run, then they get this 6′ 1″ reserve guard in the 1986 NBA finals to harass, provoke, and get under the skin of Ralph Sampson and get him thrown out. So much more to say, but unless you are old like me and have seen it, the media will cover up and re write history.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

why does anyone watch the NBA if they think it’s fixed? and if you think it’s fixed, why complain about it? Unless you are surprised that it’s fixed? Which there is no actual evidence of…and being surprised about something that is a figment of your imagination is….well, sad.

  • http://jsflf.com Jukai

Says the guy who thinks the draft is fixed.

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

Yes, LeBron gets crazy preferential treatment from the refs, and he should average more fouls than he does, but not to an insane degree. Remember, Wilt never fouled out of a game. The calls in this series (and WCF) have been consistent-ish, just not exactly in accordance with the rule book. And that was a 6th foul on LeBron. Watch his left elbow.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I said the draft lottery (only the top pick or top two at most) often go to the most convenient team. Never said I thought it was fixed for sure.
nbk Posted: May.31 at 6:50 pm “Again, not saying I believe the draft lottery is rigged. But it is often convenient.”
Thanks though you big spoon full of sugar.

  • bike

I wonder if there is any benefit at all, no matter how small, for a player to whine about a call to a ref. I mean, does a ref ever say to himself ‘holy crap, LeBron was really pissed at me over that call I made, I am going to cut him some slack on the next one…’ or does it just piss the ref off…’I'll show that overpaid m*therf*cker for mouthing off at me…’.

  • QCao1

Time to shut up and grind the other team down. Attack, defend, defend, attack! Run them out of the gym. Come on, Chalmers & Cole, show us the next 2.0 Heat. Miller, Battier and Jones, take over the game already! Haslem, let’s show KG, PP and Rajon Heat hospitality in the paint.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

One of the biggest reason why LeBron hasn’t fouled out in a long time is because he tends to stay away from picking up stupid/cheap fouls (ie..reaching, jumping to block jumpshots and biting on pump fakes).

Boston Celtics fan’s and there team are cry baby’s. I’m picking the Heat to win. Because Miami Heat is a better team than the Boston Celtics. Heat got a player from the first round draft pick from last years draft. Norris Col from the Cleveland State. He is a better basketball player.than Ray Allen. Bring it on Boston Cry baby’s.

  • BostonBaller

KG held LBJ, LBJ did the same thing to a lesser degree to get his 6th. I do love the statement.. “I don’t foul out,”. I’m a C’s fan but I love the game and the calls have been inconsistent both ways. I think it’s funny when guys over act when they get tapped and LBJ & Wade have almost perfected it as well as a few Celtics players. My thing is the elbows LBJ throws and the stiff arms/hooks he delivers on drives. All NBA players whine but some are better at it. RR gets more..arrogant isn’t the word…he speaks his mind way too easily and it could come back to bite him & the team. The play when MP grabbed LBJ and nothing was called was crazy but the C’s did not gain an advantage so it wasn’t that horrible in the end. If LBj would have gone left in regulation like it was drawn up maybe there wouldn’t have been an OT or a fouling out. hhhmmm. I’m so random today..

Is it just me that thinks in overtime you should get an extra foul? If you have fouled out in regulation you do not get an extra foul. But I mean an extra 5 minutes of basketball should warrant at least one extra foul!

uhm the purpose of BASKETBALL at the end of the day is to PUT THE BALL IN THE BASKET WITHIN THE RULES OF THE GAME MORE TIMES THAN YOUR OPPONENT DOES just saying im not sure what you mean

@Kabraham15 Elaborate. I hate when ppl make comments about others bball knowledge, then proceed to add nothing to the conversation.

@Bike Not so much the players, but when coaches complain and point things out to the refs I think it makes them look for things and watch their calls. KG has been setting those questionable screens for years, but when Doug Collins complained about it, they started calling him on it more.

“I don’t foul out”… that statement is ridiculously arrogant, that last call was admittedly wrong, but for the first time in my life I saw Lebron get called for the same fouls as everyone else. He never used to foul out because they let him get away with bloody murder.

  • BostonBaller

dfrance is right about the weight of complaints…a coach has a better chance of getting calls than a player after complaints. There are reasons behind that… KG & others ds get away with those “extra effort” screens but I’d rather see no call on that than the no calls on the obvious travels (3 & 4 steps) & using the off arm to clearly separate space on a drive. (offensive foul). I have mixed feelings about adding a foul to players in OT and/or giving players 7 fouls to use as a rule. I wouldn’t be mad if either of those went through.

  • BostonBaller

I bet PP is not happy about fouling out in 2 games either. it happen, get over it. PP needs to stop with the faces after ever call and RR needs to calm his over active stupidity when he thinks he has been wronged. Refs need to let the men play and make the calls that lead up to fake fights. That is a hard job but they have to try.
