Lou Williams Opts Out of Contract, Will Become Free Agent

Philadelphia 76ers guard Lou Williams, who led the team in scoring and finished second in the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year voting this past season, will opt out of his contract and become a free agent July 1. Philly.com has the details: “Williams, 25, was due $6.39 million next season. While Williams is opting out of his deal, it does not guarantee that he will not return to the team. Under the terms of the new collective bargain agreement, if the Sixers wanted to sign Williams to an extension before his contract expired at the end of next season they would only have been able to extend him for three more seasons. Now they can offer him a five-year deal while other teams can only offer Williams four years. ‘I know Lou loves the fans, the city, the organization, his teammates and has the utmost respect for coach Collins and his staff,’ Rose said Saturday night. ‘Based on what Lou has done in terms of production on the court, leadership and excepting his role off the bench for the betterment of the team, I also believe the Sixers will step up to keep him like they did last summer with Thad [Young].’”

Do they need to blow this team up or wait and see how ET will improve and maybe trade AI?

He’s already making the money he is worth. The Sixers can offer him more years than anyone else, but no one in their right mind would give him more money per year. Plus, OJ Mayo is going to get more interest than him on the FA market.

The Nets and Heat need to go after this dude. Heat could use another weapon off the bench(even though they dont have the money to afford him) and the Nets could use another weapon period!

Lou Williams only fits with the Sixers, he wouldn’t be able to fit in with any other team in the NBA.

  • LA Huey

I could see the Nets overpaying for him if Deron walks.

Good point Huey, seems like a BrandonBass situation to me. I wanna stay, but if there’s a great deal elsewhere I can’t afford to pass it up…

Lot’s of teams would love to have this guy. Bulls come to mind. It’s just a matter of his value. Bull’s probably can’t afford him. The sixer’s need to make some changes if they want to compete for a title. They’ve got a good core, but they always be a middle of the pack team with them.

Only with the Sixers? Lou finished second in the Sixth Man. Guess that’s not worth mentioning, but I think lots of teams would like a scorer of his caliber on their team. Especially to help lighten the load on other players (stars?). Lou could be deadly on other teams. Wonder if he could play for the Thunder (lethal)… Fisher I can’t see playing more than one more year, and who knows what will happen to Maynor

He’d be dope on the Suns if Nash leaves. The Suns would be horrendous, but he’d be exciting to watch. Like Monta Ellis-light.
