Minnesota Timberwolves Heavily Pursuing Pau Gasol

Los Angeles Lakers forward Pau Gasol has had his name tossed around in a plethora of rumors over the past few months, and today one of those rumors resurfaced: David Kahn trying his hardest to acquire the skilled Spaniard. From the AP: “That much became clear leading up to the NBA draft on Thursday, when Minnesota offered Derrick Williams in hopes of landing the second pick from the Charlotte Bobcats to help get Gasol from the Los Angeles Lakers, two people with knowledge of the discussions told The Associated Press. The Timberwolves are expected to continue their pursuit of Gasol in hopes of putting him with fellow Spaniard Ricky Rubio and Kevin Love on a revamped roster aimed at returning the team to the playoffs for the first time since 2004. The Wolves’ interest in Gasol has long been rumored, with the highly skilled big man considered an ideal fit for coach Rick Adelman’s corner offense, and the kind of playoff-tested veteran needed on one of the youngest rosters in the NBA. He’s close friends with Rubio, the Wolves’ superb young point guard who is recovering from a torn ACL and hopes to be ready early next season. Gasol is due to make more than $38 million over the next two seasons, an enormous sum that the salary cap-strapped Lakers might have difficulty footing under the harsher luxury tax penalties scheduled to kick in in 2013.”

This would be a good move, IMO but it still doesn’t address their wing situation. It makes them shiny and adds “length.” Love-Pekovic-Gasol trio rotating at the 4/5 might be worth adding again to my league pass this coming season.

I would like to see Gasol and Love on the same squad and with Rubio running the point Twolves might have a chance to make the playoffs. That is if Rubio comes back completely healthy.

I think Lakers are dumb enough to get Derrick Williams for Gasol. I personally think Iggy and Lou Williams for Gasol would benefit both teams the most.

  • Ldub

that is with adding some pieces to make the trade work*

a 2nd pick that has flopped for a multi time 7 footer all star (although maybe on the other side of his prime now) is not going to work. Kahn can work hard all he wants, but unless he is willing to give something to get something, he’s not getting anything. And his team other than rubio, love, and pekovic are a bunch of crap. Even rubio is questionable with his broken J. Maybe he can be like Jason Kidd and eventually learn to shoot. Basically unless it’s a 3 team deal where the wolves can give some cap space to some other team and that team has the player that can be a fair trade for Gasol, it’s not going to happen.

I wouldn’t say Derrick William is a flop. It’s too early as it has only been one year. He’s definitely a four though and with K-LOVE in front of him… he’s not going to get a chance to blossom at his true position. He’s the key piece in any trade involving Gasol. Also, the luxury tax increase hits next year; wouldn’t the LAkers want to steer out of luxury tax territory? 20M over the cap means an additional check of 45M to be written out.

I’d want Derrick williams over josh smith if I was a laker

  • @Mike

Thank god your not a gm, Josh Smith > poor mans Beasley (Derrick Williams).

  • FnF

How is Derrick Williams a flop after 66 games? The team that drafted him was already bottlenecked at his position.

  • logues

if u think derrick williams is a flop (esp after 1 shortened season), u obviously didnt watch much of the twolves

    Or know anything about basketball

    Derrick Williams is a beast!!

Trade for Budinger, draft Hummel, sniffing around Gasol, are they looking to start the rarely seen “white wash?” (5 white dudes on the floor at the same time.) Aldeman’s hair is kinda “Hitler-y…”

They were must see TV last year and once Rubio is healthy, white supremacy aside, will be really formidable.

If the Lakers can somehow get Derrick Williams and another average player (guard) from another team in three or four team I wouldn’t be a bad trade. Send gasol to minn. n sen artest to the third team.

  • The Truther

Dwilliams is not a flop, he gets buckets, and hes only 21 years old!!! if lakers could get dwilliams and any of these michael beasley, wesley johnson, or anthony randolp for gasol n barnes/metta world peace n future draft pick then that would be a good trade. and now we can let the Spanish Romance play together Gasol n Rubio

Rubio’s jumper isn’t exactly “broken” the way that Wall’s (or Rondo’s) is. He can hit shots fairly consistently, what he needs is finishing skill. But that court vision won’t ever go away, and that’s something sorely lacking in today’s athlete-driven PG’s. In regards to the trade, if Derrick goes for Pau, the Wolves will make the Playoffs in potentially a higher seed than LA.

  • DR

damn T-Wolves will have the whitest starting lineup :p

  • Reggie06

No its not WORTH it, better josh smith or iggy and lou

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

Imagine a line-up of Rubio, Ridnour, Beasly, Love, Gasol. That would be the whitest line up in the NBA right? lol

  • ~El Boydelz~

Jahmal, you’re forgetting Pekovic, Milicic, Barea and having added Budinger and Hummell there are all sorts of “white wash*” line up options. Some that would be quite good even!

*White wash being 5 white guys on the floor at once…

  • http://www.slamonline.com keep it real

Yeah I’m convinced kahn wants the whitest team possible

  • http://www.nba.com Shadojoker

Lmao at the “white wash” possibility..

  • http://Www.slamonline.com Slam-man

That white line up would suck defensively.

  • ~El Boydelz~

IDK Slam-Man, the guys are all pretty pasty white. If they can get the lights and the glare right they can blind their opponents with their whiteness.
