OJ Mayo Becomes Unrestricted Free Agent After Grizzlies Don’t Extend Qualifying Offer

The Grizzlies offered restricted free agents-to-be Darrell Arthur and Marreese Speights qualifying offers Friday, meaning at the least those players have an offer on the table in Memphis, and the Grizzlies have the right to match any offers that come in for those two guys from other franchises. But OJ Mayo did not receive the same treatment—the Grizz elected not to give the guard a QO, meaning Mayo will become an unrestricted free agent, free to sign wherever he’d like. The Commercial Appeal is on the report: “Forwards Darrell Arthur and Marreese Speights will be restricted free agents this summer after receiving qualifying offers from the Grizzlies. … Memphis did not exercise that option for guards O.J. Mayo and Lester Hudson. They will become unrestricted free agents and can leave without the Grizzlies being able to match contract offers. The Griz won’t renounce their rights to Mayo and Hudson, meaning they could still execute a sign-and-trade deal with each player. However, that is unlikely. Finances and the direction of the team played a role in those decisions. The Griz are roughly $7 million beneath the luxury-tax threshold. Mayo’s qualifying offer is $7.4 million and would have affected the Grizzlies’ financial flexibility. A player can opt to accept the qualifying offer for one season and become an unrestricted free agent the following summer.”

PLEASE let him come to the Lakers! We’ve got to get younger and more athletic, he’s got good range and can stretch the floor as well.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Dagger

Financial considerations were paramount in this decision, but surely there was another way to keep some financial flexibility. Even if they didn’t want to hold onto Mayo, he’s got real value and could have been leveraged into a useful asset. SMH.

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

Why does everybody think the Lakers magically have the ability to acquire free agents? Mayo, Nash, Ray, etc aren’t signing for the veteran’s minimum here.

  • Rev

This might sound like blasphemy to Lakers fans but it might be time to trade Kobe and get back a superstar. As well as get wayyyyy under the cap. Do it twhile there is still some value there……..sorry!

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Ball

Interesting Rev. Trade Kobe who has a no trade clause – very intriguing… I see where you are coming from. Have you been a GM before? It seems like it.
    What else are you thinking?

  • http://www.slamonline.com spit hot fiyah

mayo has probably shown what he is at this point, and i guess the grizzlies were not about to over pay him. more tony write, wrote, wroten!!!! good move to keep speights, he was big for them. arthur….i don’t know.

  • Jer dawg

Never lived up to other people’s expectations. He’s a good scorer, but a turnover machine.
If he cares about winning and money he needs to look long and hard at other teams.

thank you Caboose, lakers fans think they’re entitled to any and every good player

  • http://www.nba.com Shadojoker

    Come to Chicago buddy!!

  • Elliot

Im a long time grizzlies fan, and when we drafted OJ, the whole city loved him. Its just a shame that we didn’t really give him the chance to mature and grow into the all star which I think he is. Although its bittersweet Im happy he is leaving, he needs a change of scenery to get back into the starting role he was designed for and let him be the first or second option on the offense. Honestly I think if we gave him the chance he is better suited as a point guard. Lakers, Heat, maybe Bulls…they are the ones probably looking for a pg.

  • Justin05

Lol I’m a laker fan and I do not want OJ. Chicago might be a good fit for him. Or ny if they don’t resign smith. The lakers need to get rid of Gasol already. I’ll take josh or Derrick.

  • Reggie06

Caboose, really you say that about laker fans? Look at every free agent topic in this page you will see come to the heat nash, ray allen, and i forget other over the years cmon son

  • http://www.slamonline.com Dagger

He’ll probably go to the Celtics. They have the cap space and they’ve been chasing him for years.

  • ChipS

Mayo had a great start to his career with his first two seasons. He needs a change of scenery. He did what most guys his age and of his hype and caliber wouldn’t do: Accept a TEAM Role. I think he’s looking for himself now and I don’t blame him. Jeff Van Gundy was right on the money with what he said about Mayo at the draft on Thursday.

  • ItzPlayz

trade kobe? right because another team would be willing to take on that kind of contract and be in the same position as us…..makes perfect since…nope lakers are stuck for at least 2 more years of contract problems

  • RunNGun

LMAO to the LAKERS? To do what, sit behind Kobe? Mayo is not 1, he’s a 2. @sirGrey… it’s not just LAkers fans, it’s KNICKS fans (the delusional fake fans) too.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the ‘need a name’

I would love to see Kobe renegotiate his contract. Sign an extended contract for 2/5 less the money and get rid of MWP, Barnes, Murphy, Eyenga, Gasol and maybe even Blake.
That frees up 34 million plus 4 million with Sessions leaving. Renegotiate Kobe’s contract so he will only get let’s say, 14 million. Bynum can be the highest paid player on the Lakers and bring in some talent that doesn’t just exist in 3 players, but so the Lakers can have a full roster of talent.

    One can hope.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

LMAO – nobody is trading or wants Kobe and his 57 million remaining over the next 2!!!! Years. Bahaha, Lakers fans have no idea how bad their teams situation is. smh

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Mayo will be in Phoenix, Toronto, Brooklyn, or Dallas next year. Depending on who gets and misses on the other big free agents.

  • jose

“Trade Kobe and get back a superstar” . . . . You know because Kobe isn’t one of those superstar players at all. . . . You never Trade Kobe. . .trade clause or not

  • ec

mayo will go to the pacers

  • TheGreatOne

Trade Kobe?… what a stupid thing to say. Dude is still 1st team all NBA and still making the all defensive team… People who trade for potential don’t win championships in the NBA, or have you not noticed that…Stick to your fantasy basketball league that you got 3rd in probably.

  • http://Buckthetrapup.com DopeBoiGD

Mayo to Dallas will definitely help out the mavericks. However, Phoenix is going to make a push at other free agents.

Dallas needs to let mayo learn from Kidd on how to run point.

Mayo is a cerebral player and has intellect and skill set to run point. Contrary to what caboose claims about how jr smith, nick young are same position. Mayo like Austin rivers can switch to point because they both have intellect. Rivers all ready has great mentors. Mayo needs one.

  • JML-G

want him to go to Boston – i think he could finally rise as the star there he was expected to be

  • iknowmybasketball

knowing oj mayo, he will want to be in a position that would instantly give him starter minutes. best bet is he goes to chicago or brooklyn. chicago would have a dynamic backcourt with him drose and deng, brooklyn would just MAYBE give DWill and D12 a reason to join the Nets with him, gerald green and marshon brooks as the future wings of their franchise.

  • Wet

I actually think mayo still has a lot of upside and room to grow. He would be a better player if he was a starter. He had some seriously promising rookie games. I think he needs the ball more, conley improving over the years hurt OJ.

  • Dee

I could see him coming to L.A The Lakers can keep the same roster and add Mayo, combine him with draft pick Darius Johnson Odom and you have the 2013 NBA Champs. Kobe needs help, a couple of players not afraid to attack! The 2 players just mentioned could do that! Kobe can and probably will re-work his deal so the Lakers can make a decent offer to Mayo. Sure Mayo could get more elsewhere but I think he’d jump at a chance to play with a first ballot hall of famer not to mention giving himself a shot at replacing him once he retires. I was saying during this past season that The Lakers should try trading Kobe for Mayo and Rudy Gay. There’s no chance of that happening seeing the Lakers are going to hold on to him until he hangs it up! But if you surround him with a couple of young hungry ballers, with the core nucleaus of Bynum Gasol & World Peace, banner #17 would soon follow.

  • Slam-man

They are dumb to let him walk away freely without getting back anything from him. That’s bad management. Obviously they knew they were not going to re sign him. They should have traded his expiring contract during the season. This year was a strong draft. If they didn’t want to take back a contract, they should have traded him for a draft pick. He is worth a mid 20s pick. Maybe you get lucky n the draft. But don’t let the guy go for nothing if he’s not in your future plans.

  • Slam-man

@dee. So u think mayo n the new odom guy is enough for the lakers to beat the west n eventually the Heat. Puff puff pass man. He make them younger n better but he isnt the ultimate Answer. N johnson odom was like the last pick of the draft. He might not even make the team pet alone be a game changer! Secondly mayo/Gay for Kobe is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. Even if Kobe didn’t have a no trade clause why would you trade him for nothing!

  • Dee

I’m not saying that’s the ultimate answer but Mayo and the rookie Johnson-Odom could spell relief for Kobe. In this game of basketball, size doesn’t always matter, you have to have some heart to go with that skill…At 6-2 220llbs, he’s a first team defender out of the Big East who averaged 18…he sounds like someone who can ball! And he’s proabaly better than any bench player they currently have on their roster.

Now as far as the trade being the dumbest thing you ever heard, Rudy Gay is on the verge of becoming an year round allstar and OJ Mayo can score and he hasn’t reached his full potiental. If we’re talking about rebuilding a team, you mean to tell me there’s a better solution then that one? (assuming there’s no chance of trading for D.Will or D.Howard)Getting two young players to play with an allstar center and a top 10 power foward sounds like a pretty good option if they decided to go that route. Holding on to your aging superstar can cripple your organization. You saw what happened with the Celtics when they held on the the big 3 of Bird Parish and McHale. Getting to the playoffs with no chance of winning is not a goal for a team like the Lakers. With OKC looking like the team to beat for the next few years, it doesn’t make sense to just sit and watch it happen.

  • gusisit

^holding on to tim duncan really hurt san antonio didnt it? i see him going to the timberwolves or nets

  • Dee

Surrounding Duncan with players didn’t hurt either. They still got outplayed and hustled by a younger OKC team. Again making noise in the regular season and advancing into the playoffs might be good for some teams but storied franchies like Boston and the Lakers want more than that. Before the Spurs made trades to make their team better, everyone called them old. Surrounding Duncan with players gave the Spurs debt, they won 20 straight and most folks including myself crowned them World Chapms. Having said that, they still ended up getting beat. The Celtics looked old until they surrounded the big 3 with Brandon Bass and Avery Johnson. Avery Johnson gets hurt and the C’s looked old! They got outplayed in game 6 by a younger superstar in Lebron. You can keep your team together for the sake of being a playoff team but sooner or later you’re going to have to play a elite team with superior talent.

  • Dee

Surrounding Duncan with players didn’t hurt either.

    The Lakers CAN’T get Mayo

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

    As in it’s impossible

  • Basketball iQ

i swear,,, I come here and see some of the most off-the-wall statements ive ever seen EVER! no lie, ie:
    “Trade Kobe”,, lol, never happening.
“Make kobe re-negotiate his contract to 14mill &, get this AND!!!- make bynum the highest paid player over there…”
(just threw up in my mouth)!!! NEVER HAPPENING!
“Hes going to dallas!”-> who happens to be chasing DWILL with a ship load of money-NEVER HAPPENING!
“Hes going to the Pacers!”- They moved on from BrandonRush a season ago for PaulGeorge at the 2, or dont you remember that?-DUH, never happening!
“Phoenix-Toronto-Brooklyn, whoever misses in FA”–> All trash who are chasing more lottery balls next season

  • Basketball iQ

why go to any of those places when boston has opened a spot up for you on a championship team next to a WILLING passer so all you have to do is fill the wing and do what you do best, score the ball with Paul on the otherside and KG trailing… not to mention, one of the best coaches in the world. Plus Bean has the money loose to pay’em. Everyone else who has the money to pay him is EL-TRASH-O & the teams that dont are log-jammed and want him to come off the bench or play 7th fiddle.
    Boston is a lock.

  • Dee

Mayo in Boston sounds good but there’s not enough balls to go around. “The Truth” is not ready to give up his touches and the C’s are trying to re-sign Allen so he don’t go to Miami. Avery Bradlee is coming back, he need touches too! So you think Mayo is willing to assume the same role he did in Memphis? Maybe for a championship. We’ll see.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

You know just because teams are throwing money at people doesn’t mean they are going to sign them. And just because Boston has cleared money for him, doesn’t mean they have cleared enough to compete financially with oter offers. Guys get overpaid, annually. It’s the one thing you can bank on. And I’d bet, OJ is one of those guys this year. And Boston just paid Garnett 34M over 3 years, not leaving them a ton of money to throw at Mayo.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Plus as Dee just said, Bradley is their SG of the future. It would be hard to see Mayo take LESS money to compete for a starting spot, when he could get MORE money and be a teams GUARANTEED starter. But your the one who named himself “basketball iq” I’m sure you thought of that.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

I hope the Blazers can pick him up..
Flynn,Okur,Leonard…. Still gonna need at least 1 more 2 and 3

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Oops, forgot about Crawford, but he’ll likely be gone come training camp.

  • Basketball iQ

    nbk… (no basketball knowledge)
    34million over 3years is about 11 a season.

Thats means, he only accounts for 11million of the 38-40million we have free for this season—leaving us 27million to play with.
Kevin was due 21million before restructuring for these 11million

nbk(no basketball knowledge) go add that up

AveryBradley is a beast, dont get me wrong, but who said he was the solution of the future at 2?
Just letting him have free reign with no competetion ahead of him or behind him in the gym with him EVERYDAY will make him fat(headed). they will compete for the job if Mayo comes over. Its healthy.
Either way, they will both be winners.
Boston still happens to be losing production since they had Bradley and RayAllen last year. Another guard is in order.
And the argument of being over paid goes both ways.
The winning type dont fall under that criteria and I see Oj as the winning type.
And all that mess about PaulPierce not letting go of the team… were you not watching the last half of the season & playoffs when Ray, Paul, and KG openly ADMITTED they turned the team over to Rondo.
HUSH my child. all is well.
Like i said, those losing franchises have nothing to offer but money. No legacy, no future, no chance of greatness anywhere else but Boston.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Boston has assuming Garnett’s contract is worth about $9.75million (assuming as most veteran deals do, it increases 5% per season), Boston’s payroll is right now Approximately $41.75million with SEVEN players (Rondo, Bradley, Pierce, Garnett, Johnson, Stiemsma, Williams, Moore) with the salary cap at 58.044 that leaves Bowton with almost 17 million (close to $27M but not really) in cap space. You think they want to use around $10M of it on OJ Mayo, in hopes to win a title, fine. Your the one whose name is basketball IQ throwing out a bunch of “facts” – AND you thinking the legacy is more important than the money to many players is cute. When a $50M over 4 year contract gets thrown at OJ Mayo I highly doubt he takes Boston’s 4 year $40M and legacy offer anyway. But if that’s what you know? “they have $27M after $38!! Hahaha $38million dollars? Really? Let’s just look at Paul Pierce’s 2012-13 paycheck to be – ($16,790,345) from the already stated ( ) team Soft Salary Cap what do you have? ($41,209,699) now how in the world is Rajon Rondo still on the roster and they have some what did you say? $38-40M in cap space? for Kevin Garnett and others? Lol, someone doesn’t know what they are talking about. And it’s not the guy boasting about his “iq” in his name. lmao – you got me though “no basketball knowledge” that was catchy in 2007 when I would have just reacted by calling you stupid and not having a very good argument….I’m passed that though.
