Post Up: Heat Force Game 7

LeBron James pours in 45 points in one of his finest postseason performances to date.

Heat 98, Celtics 79 (Series tied 3-3)

by Eldon Khorshidi | @eldonadam

Players with 45 points, 15 rebounds and 5 assists in a playoff game in NBA history: LeBron James, Wilt Chamberlain. That’s it.

Because of that, we’ve got a Game 7.

How though? Wasn’t it over? Didn’t Paul Pierce’s three-pointer in LeBron’s mug flat-line the Heat? Hadn’t we witnessed the demise of LeBron James and the rest of the Big 3, who just couldn’t live up to the hype and expectations?

Ugh. The exaggerated reports. The ignorant certitude. The so-called pundits (I’m looking at you, you and you) shaking their heads in disgust at Miami, equal parts negligent and oblivious to the fact that Game 6 had to actually be played. Please, just stop it.

This is why I sometimes hate the media, and the legions of fans it permeates and casts its dogma upon. Could you really pre-write Game 6? Have you no respect, no shame? Have you ever actually realized what LeBron James is capable of doing, or do you just focus on his shortcomings last year and the year before that, the way he handled The Decision, and continue to convince yourself that he’s a “failure,” with a penchant for losing and no time to make it right.

I guess you’re right. LeBron James is already 27 years old, and has nothing to show for it. Michael Jordan was sooooooo far ahead of him. He didn’t fail, like, ever. He never got bounced by the Pistons in three consecutive postseasons. I mean, shit, Jordan wasn’t a year older than LeBron is right now when he won his first ring.

LeBron James is not Michael Jordan, I know. But I’m just trying to drive home a point. Please, can we just chill with the labels and conclusions, at least until these playoffs are over?

Last night, LeBron scored 45 only because he decided to stop there. He could’ve gone for 50, 60, or maybe even pulled a David Robinson. I hate you, I hate myself, and I hate everyone else that contributed to us settling into Game 6 without expecting this. Of course, the Celtics deserved all the praise coming their way, and deserved to be the favorites—a cruising veteran bunch, playing a close-out game at home, with proven late-game execution and killer instinct. Boston deserved all of it. But that doesn’t mean the Heat deserved to be counted out with such callous disregard.

Moments after last night’s game ended, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra eloquently addressed the vitriol his team received in the aftermath of Game 5, by saying, “Nobody likes getting dirt thrown on your face before you’re even dead.”

It was as simple as that. Game 6 was LeBron’s. His face, dirt-covered or not, was stoic. Bron effortlessly took over the game, and achieved at least some level of vindication, even if he refuses to acknowledge it publicly.

Midway through the first quarter, James ignited a 10-0 run to put the Heat ahead 22-12. He scored 8 points during that run, showcasing the full package—turn-around jumpshots, driving layups, and-ones, and a three-pointer. LeBron scored 14 points on 6-7 shooting in the opening frame, casting a dizzying and deflating spell on the TD Garden crowd. At the end of the first quarter, Miami had shot 58 percent and commanded a 26-16 advantage.

Boston tried its best to keep the game within reach—losing the second quarter 29-26, heading into halftime down 13 (55-42)—but committed 11 turnovers in the first 15 minutes of the game and seemed out of sync, out of ideas to contain LeBron, and out of fuel. At the end of the first half, Dwyane Wade was only 1-of-6, but it was all good; LeBron James had 30.

The rest, literally and figuratively, was history.

The Heat stayed even with the Celtics in the third, and won the final frame 24-18 to cruise to a 98-79 victory. Wade had a cool 17 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists, and Chris Bosh finished with 7 points and 6 rebounds in his second game back from a lower abdominal strain. Wade had a strong second half, and Bosh didn’t have to play more than 28 minutes, but all that was just peripheral noise. LeBron stole the show, and possibly the Big 4’s last chance at an NBA title. He was a villain, a monster, an assassin in his own world.

On the road, in Boston, facing elimination, LeBron played 44 consecutive minutes to start the game, making shot after shot after shot. Three-point heaves, layups, floaters, put-back dunks, jumpers over the smaller Rondo, over the taller KG. 19-for-26, 45 points, 15 rebounds and 5 assists. An emotionless face throughout, like he expected nothing less. LBJ unraveled his whole being, went all-in, and vomited everywhere. This one ranks right up there with the 48 he hung on Detroit in Game 5 of the ’07 Eastern Conference Finals, when he scored 29 of Cleveland’s final 30 points to prevail in double-overtime. This one is going on the Wikipedia page.

Paul Pierce, the assumed counterpart to LeBron, struggled mightily. Pierce shot just 4-18, finishing with 9 points and 5 rebounds in 31 minutes of play. His jumper didn’t fall all night, going 2-12 from beyond 10 feet. Not a good look, especially when his enemy was pissing on his floor, making history in his house. Rajon Rondo contributed 21 points and 10 assists, but committed 7 turnovers, and Kevin Garnett had a meaningless 12 points. The Celtics missed 13 of 14 three-point attempts and will now have to win a second straight game in Miami if they want to advance to the NBA Finals.

This could have been the last home game for the Big 4. Tomorrow night, they’ll try to buck their recent trend of losing close-out Game 6s and then falling in Game 7. It happened against Orlando in the 2009 East Finals, and against the Lakers in the 2010 NBA Finals.

LeBron’s 11th 40-point playoff game, second among active players to Kobe Bryant’s 13, was enough to quiet his skeptics and silence his critics for the time being. After the game, LBJ said all the right things, deflecting attention off himself by putting the game in its proper perspective—merely a must-win in a best-of-seven series—while also giving us a glimpse of what’s to come.

“I won’t regret Game 7. Win, lose or draw, I’m going to go in with the mindset like I’ve had this whole season. And we’ll see what happens.”

That mindset was on display last night, and we saw what happened.

LeBron James, Wilt Chamberlain. That’s it.

Wow. What a night. Would have been more entertaining if the Celtics could have kept it a little more competitive but that just shows how dominant LeBron was. Not only were people counting him out but the night before folks wanted to anoint the Thunder NBA champs. I think that prolly irked him a little as well. Gotta love the NBA playoffs.

  • MeloMan15

Lebron was incredible… Paul Pierce didn’t show up at all. Celtics had their chance and blew it. No way they won in Miami twice in a row

  • Feez_22

man… 1 things for certain… Wade is going to have to show up in G7. The celts are gonna double the dogcrap out of lebron.

LeBron can’t do it by himself every game. Wade needs to show up in BOTH halfs. I hope LeBron goes off and gets his ring this year. No one has outplayed him this year in the playoffs. Yes not even KD.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Please stop making predictions folks. No one knows what is going to happen. Just enjoy the moment.

  • http://nba.com/celtics lights out

if I’m Miami i’m obviously thrilled with LeBron’s performance, but going into game 7, i also look at it as kind of fool’s gold. Miami hasn’t figured anything out. everything you saw last night was a result of Boston being gassed and LeBron hitting a ton of jump shots. not saying LeBron wasn’t absolutely unbelievable, just saying there’s probably not much there for Miami that can carry over into game 7.

  • T-Money

boston was gassed last night? oh word?

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Spolstra made his first real adjustment of the post-season last night by starting with Wade on Rondo and keeping it that way for majority of the game. Better late than never.

  • http://nba.com/celtics lights out

it would explain the awful rebounding and shooting, right?

  • RunNGun

Balls to the walls, folks. Game 7 is where it’s at. If the Heat choke, something’s gotta give in the offseason.

  • Mike From Spain

My guess is that the game 7 will not look like this one, and that Lebron will probably have a more usual night by his gargantuan standards (30-12-7 or something). I don’t know what can happen as an end result…

  • Heals

Shades of 09′ all over again. Momentous Gm5 win, Gm6 blowout and Gm7 collapse. Ugghhh the more your team wins, the more the last loss hurts…

  • Feez_22

@lights out ehh… the celts aren’t a great rebounding team to begin with. Add bosh into the lineup with haslem grabbing 39 boards in 3 games prior to game 6 and its no surprise the heat outrebounded the celts… especially with lebron going 45-15-5 (which he did v. the pacers who were outrebounding the heat. he went 40-18-9) so in reality it isn’t fools gold. the heat played exceptional defense last night. their best D of the conference finals. Its not like the celts were missing wide open jumpers… these were contested shots they were missing. Shot 42.7% in game 6… guess what they shot in miami? 41%. This is what they did all sixers series. if u dominate the boards against them you can do work. Stop rondo (which is what the heat did in the 2nd half) and you win. I honestly don’t want to hear the “celtics were tired” excuse when they are playing at home in their environment in a close out game 6. Thats an excuse they could have made in G5 on the road yet they closed that game out nicely. What mia can take out of game 6 is as follows:

    1. Wade had 17pts on 17 shots. Bosh had 7pts in 28 mins (although his D was great). Lebron does NOT need a 45pt game again… If wade can get 23-25 and bosh can get 15 or so which isn’t asking too much of 2 players for game 7, lebron can go in2 game 7 only needing a 28-30pt trip double type performance (its nuts how its a foregone conclusion he will get a trip double nxt gm or is even capable).

    2. Mike miller needs to hit a damn shot at home. Battier was a pleasant surprise hitting 3 shots on the road (he usually records donut or 0 for games on the road shooting) but he brought it. Miller has 2 hit those open 3s.

    3. Keep wade on rondo. obvious why i say so.

If these things can go down… Miami has a great chance. However, do NOT count boston out. You can never underestimate a heart of a champion. & if wade doesn’t show up you best believe boston will be ready come G7 to stomp.

  • logues

im surprised doc didnt switch to a zone esp when bron was destroying them… it seemed to work pretty good against the heat. didnt let anyone get into a real zone.. i thought they shoulda did that last night

  • Feez_22

@logues doc switched for a minute but lebron just kept hittin shots. so he switched back.

  • http://slamonline.com Nella

Lebron was incredible. Role players finally hit some big shots (Chalmers, Battier). Boston could not have played worse. It looked like they had no legs at all. They also missed a bunch of gimmes at point blank range. Good game by the Heat. I wanted them to lose, but I’m not dumb enough to think they weren’t going to play desperate and focused. Just like I’m not dumb enough to think Boston isn’t going to try do the same in MIA. Game 7 is going to be crazy.

  • T-Money

yeah, miami was ready for the zone. bron went straight to the high post and got busy. i still don’t get why spo stopped playing joel. in the 4 minutes he was in during the 4th quarter, he gave some issues to kg. he’s the only guy on the team that can really contest kg’s turnaround j.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I said the same thing last night T-Money.
No one else can bother KG on his turnaround because they lack the length and athletic ability. The three shots that Garnett looked bothered on were the one where Joel defended him tight and when Wade timed his move and jumped at just the right time to throw off his rhythm.
Bosh was aiming his jumper early, but the last one he took he just shot and it went in. He looked a little lost because of the intensity level, but he definitely played good defense by moving his feet. That was valuable. The only player who really didn’t play well was Wade. All the role players did what you would expect.

  • Layzie

I hope Lebron can carry this performance over to game 7. Wade needs to show up too. Damn I can’t wait til tomorrow night!

  • http://www.soundcloud.com/tray-5 T-Ray

I’m so hyped for tomorrow! The boo thang best realize we aren’t going out tomorrow night.

  • Andrew Woods

It seems like wade’s burst of explosions are a aberration instead of being the norm. I havent paid too much attention but in the playoffs it has become painfully obvious that he has lost a lot of something. I dont get too high off lebrons great games(which come with more regularity) than his low points. I just understand greatness. He plays the game how I would want the game to be taught.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Bosh when motivated can also combat KG’s length around the basket. I think Spo goes with Haslem over Joel because the threat (no matter how miniscule) of his 15-18 foot jumper. The guy hasn’t been hitting that shot all season long but his rebounding and Joel’s lack of rebounding makes him a valuable piece.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

What is really crazy is how we see Bron dominate like this and we think “Why can’t I get this all the time?” I think it’s because when he goes off these days, it almost looks effortless. Back when he lost to Orlando, we could tell how hard it was for him to score and create. Now, he just gets to his spots, hits jumpers, gets layup and hits the glass.
Even though it requires an insane amount of energy, it somehow looks easier and we believe he can do it on command. That’s pretty ridiculous, but that is what many fans, including myself at times, tend to believe.

  • ThaWindy

Da Truth was a lie last nite. They ranned the offense through him and he didn’t deliver throwing off the Celts rhythm. Celts had a chance to make it a game towards the end of the 3rd but couldn’t cut it within eight pts(KG missing a layup). Celts need rest and I think that’s why Doc threw in the towel with like 7 mins lefts in the 4th but they aint gonna get it. Great series so far. Game 7…Can’t Wait!

The man goes off and people want this performance every night? He averages more in the playoffs than most people’s favorite player. He makes it look so easy and I loved the way he went about it. No emotion on his face no crying to refs just business. That one camera shot was creepy whne he was just looking crazy as cat sh*t.

  • http://www.nyill.wordpress.com O

The C’s got D-stroyed last night. No suspect officiating or non-calls. Just good ol basketballin’. Heat got this, man…

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

Wow…still picking my jaw up off the floor after that game. I have a hard time imagining the Celts pulling off a game 7 win in Miami, but I’m deffinitly not counting them out. Miami vs OKC finals would be unbelievably fun to watch.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

So people really think Kevin Durant is better than that guy?

  • Sparker

hey, i’m happy miami won and all, but it was one game. and the celtics would have been right there if they could have bought a shot now and then. as far as the adjustment story goes, it looks like doc has been gambling that it’s more important to double wade than lbj, as an lbj-iso offence is basically cleveland with different coloured uniforms. well, we all saw that turned out last night. so what does doc do now?

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

    Yes.
But lets not take away from that performance. He was fricken incredible. Did exactly what needed to be done. That game was a LeBron-esque game. The ones we all know he is capable of more often then he gives them to us.
    Atta boy James.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Double J

I heard Boston just signed MWP for Game 7

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

More often? That is the first time that’s happened in 48 years. By anybody. If you expect a player to score 45 on 72% shooting MORE OFTEN and think that player isn’t the best player on earth then there is something wrong with your POV. Plain and Simple.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

Video Games James, his best and most fitting nickname imo.

  • http://slamonline.com Caboose

People who value scoring above all else lack the ability to properly evaluate a basketball talent.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

even if you value scoring more than anything else, LeBron has the 2 highest scoring games this post season. Averages more PPG than anyone else. Has a higher FG% then anyone averaging over 20, and 7th highest overall.
    .
So he leads the playoffs in scoring, efficiency, and is 2nd among all remaining players in FG% to Serge Ibaka. Despite how much he shoots and how much attention he gets.

  • Andrew Woods

    Cosign caboose 100%!!!!

  • http://Slamonline.com Datkid

Durant is not better than lebron. He might be in 4 more years, but not now. Durant IMO isn’t even better than young cleveland lebron… He just has a good team around him. One that right now bc of injuries is better than lebron’s

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

    lol… Buncha straw men.
Yes I expect 72% shooting and 45 points and 15 boards every night… Duh, is that so hard to do?
GTFO, He needs to have this mind set and this mentality more often. F the “$TAT$”. He needs to have his mind right like this in the playoffs every game. That doesn’t mean he scores 30, or 40, or 50. That doesn’t mean he needs to rebound more than 12 times, that doesn’t mean he needs double digit assists. It just means he needs his mental game right in order to utilize all his potential.
I know, I know, I’m a hater for acknowledging his obvious main flaw.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

It would only be Straw Man if you stated that. But you didn’t. You just said “That game was a LeBron-esque game. The ones we all know he is capable of more often then he gives them to us.” – You can’t take something that was never said out of context. We aren’t in your head.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

    Your so angry sounding.
Aren’t you happy your team is winning bud?
Anyway, awesome performance. It was a game unlike anyone has played, hence why it is Lebron-Esque. It’s his game. That’s his style. That’s how he can dominate. That’s a player that I would enjoy to watch every night. His mentality was awesome. Straight killer. Right to the throat. I loved it.
I was rooting for the villain, and it was great.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Not angry. Just sick of your stupidity. LeBron has been the best player all post season. His demeanor last night is not what made him better than everyone else. It’s just what people like you who are either stupid or blinded by whatever drives you to dislike a player so badly needed to see. Honestly, I don’t give a flying sh*t about your opinion simply because it doesn’t deserve any respect. But I do enjoy calling it out for how stupid it is. It helps pass the time.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=rwDluFZQmtQ Max

  • http://www.soundcloud.com/tray-5 T-Ray

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Haha, It’s sol good fellas, like I said, wrong side of the bed. lol.
I’m personally just going to enjoy that performance cause it was awesome. My favorite of the playoffs so far without a doubt. Just amazing. I hoping KD does 1 up him though. I truly would love for a Finals with Durantula vs The King.
Durant whether we have noticed or not is going to be Bron’s main rival for the rest of his career. Vice-versa too. Melo has been there, but KD is a completely different, and better ball player. He rivals Bron on many levels and they play the same position and i’m expecting they will be battling out for the belt this year. Gunna be sooooo much fun to watch.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

nbk was a bit Lebron-esque in his response, no?

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

    Yep.
    .
Criticizing a player for his demeanor when he’s the playoff leader in scoring, (and 4th quarter scoring, or maybe 2nd to Kevin Garnett now, not sure), leads the playoffs in efficiency, has lead his team to the best post season record over the last 2 years (since he joined the Heat), is a form of ignorance. The only difference between LeBron last night and LeBron normally is, he hit all the difficult shots he normally misses, and didn’t smile. That’s it. Other than that he did what he’s done all post season, he was the best player on the court who has to put out a heap of production for his underwhelming team to even have a chance. Last night LeBron had 45 on 72% shooting. Aside from him, the only other player on the team with more than 10 points was Dwyane Wade. The 4 starters next to dude shot 14 of 36, and they won by 19! If he’s not obviously the best player in the league to someone after last night (especially if you were just the day before talking about how stats aren’t what matters, it’s what you see, which should have been clearly visible to anyone with eyes last night) a game in which he just absolutely beat the best defense in the NBA by himself, then you are either stupid or blinded by some irrational hate.

  • http://slamonline.com Datkid

    LMAO^^

  • HimKing

LEBRON’S ability transcends where the divine begins and man ends.

  • http://slamonline.com Datkid

personally? I don’t actually see what’s wrong with his regular demeanor…I mean he doesn’t really joke around that much on the court anymore. and even when he DID joke around he was still going to drop 30 10 10 on your @ss. casually.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

I love it when he doesn’t smile though lol.
