Report: Deron Williams Will Only Play for Brooklyn Nets or Dallas Mavericks

The Deron Williams Watch begins! Or maybe it’s been going on for a long time now, but it’ll turn up to a whole ‘nother level this week, and will continue to dominate headlines until the point guard finds an official home in the first couple of weeks of July. The latest report, via ESPN, says that Williams has crossed every potential option outside of Brooklyn and Dallas off his list: “When NBA free agency begins at midnight July 1, Brooklyn Nets star guard Deron Williams will be choosing from a two-team list that only features the Nets and the Dallas Mavericks, according to sources close to the situation. Sources told ESPN.com on Saturday night that, while this summer’s No. 1 free agent remains ‘up in the air’ about which team he’ll ultimately chose, Williams already has made the decision to narrow his list of potential destinations to those two franchises. Other teams, including the Phoenix Suns, Portland Trail Blazers and Houston Rockets, had been hoping to lodge their own bids for Williams once free agency begins, sources said. The Los Angeles Lakers, likewise have continued to express interest in a sign-and-trade package built around Pau Gasol for Williams, sources say, despite the Nets’ longstanding insistence that they have no interest in Gasol and would only consider such a move if they were getting back All-Star center Andrew Bynum, whom the Lakers have not made available. Sources say Williams, in any case, already has instructed his representatives to advise any team that calls starting at 12:01 a.m. July 1 that he intends to either re-sign with the Nets or return to his hometown with the Mavericks after a glittering high school career in the Dallas area.”

if the report is true, he is weighing extra money vs playing at home for a (for now) better team

  • SouthK

he will go to dallas- this is no brainer

  • bravo

  • Brahsef

He’s staying with the Nets. The allure of hitting 9 digits is hard to resist.

  • NJ29

Brooklyn. New arena, big market, Dwight will be there within a week or so, tons of cap space, young roster. JKidd will make his Nets return to back him up.

-Deron Williams will only play for Nets or Mavs-
    “Come to my Lakers!”
This is why I don’t like Lakers fans.

  • Reggie06

Caboose, what do u expect? Stern just fucked up our championship for basketball reasons and enjoy ur heat tittle than hate on my lakers and laker fans

  • http://www.fb.com Reedo

COsign Caboose what makes me mad about Laker fans they always want something for nothing.. lol
I think Dwill is going to Dallas if he wants to win, but unless #41 can turn back into SuperDirk they wont win another ship, they’ll still lack that Tyson chandler down low

    word caboose.

From my standpoint i think its pretty obvious he should resign with the Nets though. The Mavs are a team of older veterans built around Dirk. With the Nets, Williams has a chance to be the star of an up and coming franchise with an owner who is willing to spend to make the team competitive. I think the Nets have some decent pieces and will be in a good position to become competitive if they can secure either dwight howard or sign some other pieces to help dwill out. A core of williams, lopez and possibly wallace, is not a bad team to build around especially with role players like humphries and gerald green.

Lakers wont make it to playoffs. u heard it here first.

Reggie, it’s well documented on this site that I’m a Magic fan, not Heat. Wanna know why the Lakers didn’t win? YOUR team hired a horrid coach, Andrew Bynum turned out to not be a reliable option, Pau Gasol went soft, Kobe shot too much (a la Carmelo Anthony when most LA fans crucified him), and the role players faded. Yes, it was your team that lost. Get over it, and accept that with Kobe eating up 47% of your cap next year, you won’t win for some time. Cheers.

he should consider other places tho.

Actually dirk deron j Terry and Kidd Marion is still formidable yea they lack tysons ability but so do most other contenders

  • RunNGun

They forget to mention DA KNICKS! Make it happen, Dolan….

There is no way DWill is resigning with the Nets without the services of one DHoward and it doesn’t look like Orl will be trading Howard anytime soon to the Nets.
I’m not a betting man but my money is on DWill to the Mavs. The west will get a whole lot interesting if that happens.

  • http://minusthebars.blogspot.com don

Sounds as if DWill signs with Mavs.

Nets, ONLY if Brooklyn somehow signs Dwight Howard.

  • Sheesh12

Dwill would be leaving a ton of $ on the table to return to Dallas (20 plus million), but he would have the chance to immediately be a contender teamed with Dirk (versus taking a chance on Howard joining the nets), and also get to play under one of the best & most passionate owners in all of sports in Cuban. A lot to consider both ways, but still… Its nice to have options lol

  • John

Hopefully Dallas but as a Mavs fan i think that Deron should resign with brooklyn because of Dwights recent trade demande and he wants to be delt before the Draft. ;( I think Dwight lands in Brooklyn and Deron resigns.

  • Reggie06

You know what Caboose, i respect that i am not long enough on this site to know that you are magic fan but guess what, i feel you bro your team s going down hill too atleast a little.

  • Jay

People are forgetting Deron can make that extra 20 mill in endorsements easy, maybe more. Dirk doesn’t do big endorsements and neither does Romo so the market is wide open for him to cash in either way. The main thing is winning and if the Nets don’t score Howard then the answer is easy.

@ markorsomething ……. Suns (with Steve Nash….) going all the way to the CHIP.

  • Jake

Wow he turned down the Lakers.. Who can ever turn down a chance to play with one of the top 10 greatest players of all time, on arguably the greatest franchise in basketball, and arguably one of the best franchises in sports history.

  • tpathi1

jake you forgot to put ‘arguably’ in front of the top 10 greatest players of all time part in your statement

  • BigD

Texas doesn’t have a state income tax. New York rate is almost 9% for DWill’s tax bracket. The extra money he gets in NY is, well, nothing. Pair that with the fact that real estate is so much cheaper in Texas, I think the monetary side of things favors Dallas. As well as being a Western conference contender already poised to make a run if they pick him up.

  • http://blackamericaweb.com charliewinning

Jake, it’s very simple. Kobe isn’t exactly a selfless, supporting teammate. Individual greatness alone isn’t enough to make others want to play with you.
