Report: Dion Waiters Received Promise At NBA Draft Combine

According to ESPN’s Chad Ford, former Syracuse guard Dion Waiters has likely received a promise by an NBA team in the upcoming Draft. Waiters pulled out of the NBA Draft combine on Thursday morning, and several teams have confirmed he has cancelled all of his remaining workouts. Waiters is projected to get drafted mid-to-late lottery, and Ford already has some speculation on which team may have given him the promise: “No one knows where the promise is (or whether it’s just a smokescreen by his agent), but a number of teams pointed to the Blazers, Raptors and Suns and possibilities. The Raptors are very high on Waiters, but a promise seems unlikely considering that the team is open to moving its pick for a veteran small forward. The Blazers are a possibility, although some wonder if new Portland GM Neil Olshey could make such a significant commitment two days into his job. The Suns are also high on Waiters, but you wonder if his agent would agree to a promise that low in the lottery.”

why would anyone want a heavy set guard?

I wonder if this is a p.r. move by his agent to increase interest & bait teams into thinking twice. Also having his client withdraw from the combine & private workouts so teams wont be able to actually see holes in his game, except from game tape that every team has. In this draft outside top five there are no guarantees who’s going where.

During ” Draft season” anything goes.

    I’m hearing it was Phoenix.

I don’t like it. I mean, anything can happen come draft day. A promise is only as good until a better option becomes available. A team might reach for someone, and suddenly the team that promised Dion might draft someone else.

The Suns??… I hope the Suns get a future allstar in this draft…they have ONE pick in two rounds. Better make it work charlie.

This is a gamble. Out of all the shooting guards, the one that i’m high on is Terrence Ross. For me it’s Beal,Ross,Rivers,Lamb, and then Waiters. I remember last week Chad Ford said that some GM’s compared Waiters to Dwyane Wade. I don’t see it.

niQ is right on it. It’s too big of a risk. Your trusting a team to the point of cancelling ALL your workouts is too risky..especially in this draft. I hope his agent knows what he’s doing..

He is a good PG and will be developed . Y’all shoulda watched him play even though syracuse didn’t get too mug national games and didn’t go deep in the tourney. He has a strong body and yes dwade comparison is there. He can knock the J, suns will develop him. Seeing that Nash is gone this would be interesting.

For any of you hating on waiters you’ll probably be salty this time next year. He’s not exactly heavy set but compact. He is explosive and will be a heck of a player if put in the right situation. I could honestly see him doing well with any of these teams and I’m not even playing favorites because I love this guys game. He could seriously add fire to a rebuilding portland. Be one of many talented young guns in toronto, playing the 2(derozan at the 3) or coming off of the bench. And be the focal point going forward for Phoenix after the Nash era is over. He doesn’t need to be a starter because he wasn’t one at syracuse and he still managed to get this amount of notice with a diminished role. I’d draft the kid over Rivers, Ross, Lamb, and maybe even Lilliard.
