Report: Phoenix Suns to Pursue Deron Williams if Steve Nash Leaves

The Phoenix Suns will likely try to bring back free agent point guard Steve Nash this offseason, though his desire to join a Championship contender may have him bolting for another franchise. And if that’s the case, the NY Daily News reports, the Suns will attempt to sign the biggest name on the market…yep, Deron Williams: “The Suns’ first choice is to bring Nash back and have the greatest player in franchise history play his final game in Phoenix. They’re hopeful that a two-year, $20 million deal does the trick, and if they add a third season that would probably cinch it since it would take Nash through his 41st birthday. But there has been enough buzz about Nash leaving the Suns, after he played his eighth season in Phoenix, that Phoenix has come up with a contingency plan for his exit. Going into this weekend, the Suns view the Knicks, Raptors and even the Nets as their biggest competitors for Nash’s services. They are operating under the assumption that Nash will not go to a contender, although he has interest in Miami, where he would have to accept a lot less money than he will get to stay in Phoenix. ‘If they lose Steve, then they plan to go after Deron, hard,’ said a person with knowledge of the Suns’ plans. ‘They know he loves golf and they’re going to try to sell him on going out there.’ Meanwhile, the Mavericks remains the team the Nets have to fear more than any other when it comes to losing Williams. He’s been at the top of their free-agent wish list since before they won the title last June and owner Mark Cuban will ‘pull out all stops’ to bring Williams home, according to a team source.”

Nash needs to stay on the Suns like KG needed to stay on the Twolves. Even Suns fans are rooting for him to go win a championship on a competently-run franchise. If Deron Williams won’t stay with the Nets, why the hell would he want to go play for that mess in PHX created by one of the Top 3 worst owners in the NBA? Can Sarver promise him Dwight?

I’m a Suns fan and this made laugh out loud. “Hey Deron we know you love golf, we got all the golf you can handle”

  • Sean B

Damn Hersey… you took the words out of my mouth. If your top pitch to a free agent his golf courses…. there are bigger fish to fry.

Don’t tease me with this sh*t, SLAM. Don’t do this.

  • LB

    Zero. Chance.

KG needed to do WHAT?! if anything else, he needed to leave TWolves wayyy before – he even admitted it himself

Good luck with that, Deron Williams is either going to resign with the Nets or he’s gonna sign with the Lakers. Steve Nash is going back to the Dallas Mavs for one last run with Dirk. So therefore that leaves the Suns with nothing.

  • James aka…

Deron, how would you like to make a lateral move that you’ll regret? I have a contract that is below your market value AND a roster of past their primes and never will be’s

“and have the greatest player in franchise history play his final game in Phoenix”

    Cool, Barkley is coming back!

    @JML-G he was being sarcastic

Suns are dumb for still wanting to keep one of the most overrated point guards ever, he couldn’t lead a stacked team of players to a NBA Finals appearance. So now Nash is going to lead Brown, Dudley and Gortat to the playoffs. Heck No. Suns should trade him for some picks or for a young player.

  • Groves

i’m pretty sure they all want to win.. maybe the suns should try building a young core so they have assets to trade or pieces that will attract a free agent who thinks that he can win there

  • LA Huey

Hey, guys. Just got back from the future. Deron didn’t sign with Phoenix. “BOOK IT”

  • Justin05

Williams to lakers? Not likely. I think Dallas will get deron ad watch out if they pick up Dwight as well. Can’t they amnesty someone for the cash?

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

Lakers fans are ridiculously annoying. With a salary of over $63 mil next year, please explain how Deron will just “sign” to the team. And if the answer is “Pau Gasol sign and trade,” go and kiss your Kobe figurine.

  • James aka…

You can’t trade a free agent Seed.

  • MikeC.

I’m picturing the conversations going on in the Suns’ front office: “Hey, we’re pretty bad right? And if Steve leaves, we’re even badder and irrelevant. Can we make the playoffs if we can’t get the ball past half-court? Oh snap! We have some sweet golf courses, let’s just sign Deron Williams! I wish we’d thought of this 20 years ago, we could have had Jordan!”

  • MAS

Sign and trade. Sign and trade. It is a simple concept.

  • Tyler

As a Mavs fan, it would be very cool to have Steve back for one more shot at glory with Dirk and Marion. (Jet’s outta here.) If we don’t get Deron I hope we make a serious run at him.
