Report: Patty Mills to Opt Out of Contract, Become Free Agent

Guard Patty Mills, who signed with San Antonio after the trade deadline and averaged 10.3 points in 16 regular season games, is heavily considering opting out of the second year of his contract with the Spurs and testing free agency next month. Spurs Nation has the details: “‘I feel like I need to do my due diligence and really go and see what there is to make sure I explore every option,’ Mills said. Mills is set to make slightly less than a million dollars on the second year of his contract with the Spurs, but would become an unrestricted free agent July 1 if he chooses to exercise his player option. He hopes to settle his contract uncertainty before playing for the Australian Boomers National Team under Spurs assistant Brett Brown at the London Olympics next month. ‘But in saying that, I really enjoy being in San Antonio and being part of that program,’ Mills said. ‘I definitely want it done soon and that is what I’m trying to do so that I can get it out of the way and go to London with a clear head with the Boomers.’”

And not a single f*#k was given today.

  • LA Huey

Another FIBA impact player that can’t get it done in the NBA.

I disagree LA Huey. As a Spurs fan I was pleasantly surprised with how Patty played during the season. I honestly think one of the biggest mistakes of that OKC series was him getting zero playing time

  • spurs4life

I think we have a pg from France coming over next season. Maybe that’s the reason he opt out.

Come back to Portland Patty! We need point guards and the homecrowd loves ya mate!

  • chillout

why would you opt out in a sub par year??

  • stu

Patty has 6th Man of the Year potential, and could easily lead the L in scoring off the bench. I think he finally ‘gets’ this league, but needs burn. Good luck to him.

  • Ldub

Only know the name from POR…never seen him play.

Patty Mills opting out of his contract is not news. he is a career bench warmer

Mills can get it done, problem is that he’s not physically strong enough. He had a 34pt 12assist game late this year. Dude can play. All the best to him.

Patty could legitimately be the 10th best PG in the league. Declared and entered league one season to early and after serious hand issues slipping from top 20 – 30 to mid / late 50′s. Injuries again whilst at Portland, interrupted season this year due to Chinese contract (not game shape)…Question how many points across the year had the stat line that Hurtsy listed (34p & 12a)…irrespective of team in that game and opponent still gotta get it done!

  • Groves

Good luck to ya Patty, your our Aussie hero

  • Just Sayin

Whoopdee dam doo I got food stamps too

  • http://Somethingsomething. Ugh

@Just Sayin – He’s Australian, he doesn’t need food stamps. Australia has a real welfare system.

With the NBA coming down hard floppers Patty call it’s quits. Smart move, “Bala” is a better chearleader than player, maybe he can get a job as a mascot. Clown.

What a bunch of tools, I’d like to see the couch experts go one on one with Patty!!!!…..Probably couldn’t make it has a water boy on NBA teams…….

Welcome to the NBDL Mr. Mills

If Patty Mills goes to Stev….. PHX Suns that would be nice… for him. Particularly if Nash doesn’t hang around. I would try starting him for the 1st few months of the season, if nothing else it would probably get the Suns the #1 draft pick the following season? O_o

I was thinking the same thing spit, no way he averaged 10 ppg. Then I went to nba dot com and saw he averaged 10 ppg in about 16 mpg. That’s pretty impressive even if its in garbage time against 2nd stringers.

Patty Mills is actually awesome (by our Australian standards…). I’m a Wollongong Hawks supporter here in Australia, and we have not had international calibre backcourt players for about a minute now. You would have to go back to the days of SHANE HEAL, ANDREW GAZE…guys that were basically sitting on an NBA bench with their brief stints in the NBA (Shane Heal played “a season” for the Minnesoda Timberwolves back when they had Terry Porter backing up Marbury… he got to the NBA because he took a charge on KARL MALONE earlier that year in the Olympics… Andrew Gaze actually played for the Washington Bullets with TOM GUGLIOTTA! Shout out to Googly-Oogly-Baby!

SO yeah… the list of NBA calibre GUARDS from Australia is rather short.

@JB – LOL He averaged 34 points and 8 assists in the D-League last time he was there… The guy can flat out compete at any level

Patty is bonza mate. He had a ripper season after spending time across the water. You’d be a flamin’ galah to think otherwise. Fair dinkum!!!

  • RunNGun

To the Knicks! Make it happen, Dolan.
