Russell Westbrook Thinks Shane Battier Tried to ‘Punk’ Him

Russell Westbrook is already a very charged-up young man on the basketball court, but Shane Battier made the grave mistake of firing him up even more last night, and that turned out to be very bad news for the Miami Heat. Per Yahoo! Sports: “That’s all I need every once in a while. I don’t know what he was thinking,’ Westbrook said. ‘He was trying to punk me.’ A frustrated Westbrook had nine points on 3-of-10 shooting from the field and missed both 3-point attempts while dishing six assists in the first half. Perhaps he spent precious energy in a dance routine, moving furiously during the pregame introductions. The Thunder followed Westbrook’s lackluster lead despite Kevin Durant’s solid start (13 first-half points). Miami was certainly in control as it owned a lead as large as 13 points before walking into the locker room at halftime up 54-47. ‘I needed something. We needed something,’ Westbrook said. Westbrook finally got that something when he drove hard for a shifty lay-in with 31.4 seconds left before the half. Westbrook and Battier then got testy after getting tangled. Westbrook swung his arm in retaliation and received a technical and personal foul; Battier was also given a technical. Suddenly, the nice guy was gone in an Incredible Hulk second as he walked toward the crowd and screamed with a wild look in his eye. Westbrook also fired up the Thunder faithful, who roared back in appreciation. ‘Just frustrated in myself,’ Westbrook said. ‘I know I could have played harder. And our coaching staff and other guys on the team just emphasized once I started playing harder everybody else would follow. And that’s my job.’”

Battier punking people? Please, Battier just was doing what he was supposed to do. Not his fault that Russ has a short fuse, and lets the little things bother him at times.

  • Mr. Goattree

    Short fuse? little things?
If Shane Battier is rubbing his elbow in my grill, I’m gunna take a swing at him too.
Russ is doing an amazing job of chanelling his energy positively!

  • http://www.slamonline.com spit hot fiyah

if that’s his motivation, go for it man

  • CTB

Really?!! Battier tried to walk through Westbrook…with his arms extended out, no less! Battier’s lucky it wasn’t an upper cut.

  • http://aol.com The Iron Lung

This dude suffers from roid rage. And I really don’t like him or his out of control game

  • AD

@TheIronLung.. Westbrook has a strong dislike for your kind.

  • LA Huey

Hilarious. Whatever hallucinations get you going.

  • Da-Meat-Hook

Still not sure what Battier got that tech for…

  • Ash

I’m not sure what Battier did either

  • underdog

Russ is an amazing basketball player, he’s got all the talent, but I just can’t stand how he always has to celebrate after every bucket he made. I guess I’m just too old for these chest-beating, flamboyant players. I prefer cold blooded guys like Durant or DRose.

  • RunNGun

    thunder up!

  • http://www.twitter.com/_dfrance dfrance21

@underdog Its not every basket, but when he makes a nice play he does get extra fired up. I don’t think I’d be able to compose myself with the way that OKC crowd roars either. Best crowd in the NBA in my opinion. The whole crowd pretty much stood the entire 4th quarter.

  • davidR

yea, that double tech was bs. battier raised his arms up to avoid confrontation, russ hits the ball out of his hand, and they both get t’d up?

  • Cizzo

Shane Battier is a Beooch too…he’s walking around like he’s a preordained Champion too…They’re just Beeooches!

  • MjAy2

Got Westbrook fired up? Battier motivated him? Are we talking about the same play that I watched. Battier catches the ball as it goes through the hoop, and Westbrook is too busy yelling to the crowd to move out of the way, which is why “his elbows were in his grill”. Then Westbrook punches the ball out of his hands? It’s Battier’s right to go out of bounds… it’s where you throw the ball in from. Westbrook is a great player don’t get me wrong, but that play and what he said after the game about is garbage.

  • http://www.soundcloud.com/tray-5 T-Ray

I had a wtf look on my face after that. Like dude just walk around and let it go Shane didn’t throw a elbow or anything so just keep it moving.

  • http://www.nyill.wordpress.com O

I hate Westbrooks attitude on the court, but i hate Shane Battiers charge taking and flopping all over style of defense even more.

  • dafunk

westbrook is damn good. but a damn fool as well. trade him for rondo

  • Lloyd

The same guys who are saying that Battier didn’t do anything would probably crucify KG for doing the same thing. Just because you have your arms up, doesn’t mean you’re innocent that’s KG’s signature move. Russ was getting the crowd into it under the rim after a hustle play and Battier tries to walk through him rather than around him. Not dirty, but definitely a vet trying to get the young blood boiling, hoping he’d play over emotional.

  • DruNyce

Shane does things like this all the time. He tried to walk trough Russ like he wasn’t there. I don’t like Westbrook’s attitude either but he should know Russ don’t play that.

  • DruNyce

  • http://aol.com The Iron Lung

@AD I guess that’s the kind who doesn’t like overrated garbage players. Dude is @ss. And you could run off all the stats u want and I would tell u Ricky Davis got # too. But I wouldn’t want him on my team just like I wouldn’t wantwestbrook on my team. But ricky was cool and russ is a BAN. And another ? Why is harden allowed to bang his set on people after he hits a shot?

  • riggs

to everyone saying battier didnt do anything, are you guys slow? CLEARLY he tries to walk through westbrook to start something. Lloyed is right, if KG did the same thing battier did, you’d all be calling him a punk like you usually do.

  • davidR

O, if you think shanes flopping is bad, peep hardens flopping..

  • http://www.soundcloud.com/tray-5 T-Ray

Put it this way Shane didn’t do anything to warrant that kind of f*ckin response that was over the top. And cosing Iron Lung how does Harden get away with that? I can’t tell what exactly it is but it looks like a blood sign to me. Then again everyone is a thug now in the NBA after hitting a three cuz they all through up Bs.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Well, Russel’ has a similar outlook as Michael Jordan (que, the misunderstanding and outrage) – good luck Dwyane “i don’t give a damn about half the game” Wade

  • SiMoney

Agree 100% with Lloyd, Shane couldve easily walked around him but he purposely tried to walk thru him with his elbows out, and Westbrook pushed him off, big deal, I love Westbrooks fire, he plays with a lot of passion and intensity, and I dont see anything wrong with that…

  • AD

lol @ironlung. Slam should ban you from this site for making those hateful comments. Russ takes a lot of shots, may get out of control and maybe even dance a little but to call westbrook overated is beyond stupid. But hey, someones gotta hate.

  • AD

i think you guys get bent out of shape with minor things. What’s wrong with a lil flash. Nobody talks about Lebron’s signs being thrown up. Ya pay attention to irrelevant things and miss important stuff.

  • fitzy

I love how fired up westbrook gets. He cellys so hard. Gets the boys going

  • jim fangman

It is a big boys game and everyone is looking for an edge, all for a little showmanship, no big deal.
Westbrook was working the home crowd, it will not work the same in Miami.
Opening game, home court OKC should have won, there is a big home court advantage in OKC and Miami will have to figure a way to win one there.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Slick Ric

I absolutely hate westbrook antics on the court, I understand getting yourself hyped up but damn, the boy gotta celebrate or something after every basket. SMH

  • Debi McCarthy

  • http://gmail.com The Iron Lung

@AD ain’t nothing wrong with flash. I love it. But I’m saying how u gon t up someone or fine them for doing the big balls walk when they hit a big shot or mugg the bench when they make a bi shot. But don’t donothing to harden for soooo wooooppin all in peoples face. And its not just the 3 fingers with him he do some other stuff too.

  • http://gmail.com The Iron Lung

Hardens intro music should be 36 mafia “put yo sign is his face”

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

^Act like you been there buddy. That’s what I always say.
Man, when was the last time that you had mad respect for a guy that drained a jumper in your face and proceeded to act like it was a shot that had never been done by humanity before?…
Act like you been there lil guy. Everyone respects the silent assassin. The quiet killer. The cold blooded guy. I mean common Russ it is just annoying as hell.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

he does get everyone all hyped up though. that OKC crowd exploded when he did that. and OKC didn’t look back.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Yeah, but do you think they would have been any less hyped if he just mean mugged the crowed, as if to say, “this is what I do!!”…?
To me that would get me more hyped up then some dude thumping his chest or screaming or something. Maybe peeps in OKC is different than me though. Maybe they need him to do that for them to get hyped. It’s whatever. It’s not a ‘bad’ thing. It’s just not preferable to me.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

i don’t prefer it either. but it worked last night. whether they would be “more hyped” is kind of irrelevant isn’t it? They were hyped enough. I don’t mind it when RW does it when things like that happen. I don’t like it when he hits a contested 17 footer though. that’s just a bad shot. you shouldn’t celebrate making a bad shot, that reinforces bad behavior….even if you are doing your own reinforcing

  • LA Huey

Weird whenever LakeShow and I are on the same page. Russ celebrates the same things that a 8th/9th guy in the rotation does. Most of the things he gets pumped about are what I’d expect from a guy like Nate Robinson, not an All-Star/All-NBA caliber guard on a top 5 team.

  • Wixurrs

i still see Westbrook as a “Diet Iverson”. He’s the Lite version. His intensity just seems fake sometimes.

  • http://gmail.com The Iron Lung

Word nbk and lakeshow. I don dig russell cause he reminds me of the lame on theteam who does crazy stuff to get noticed. Its ok russell we see you

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

    Wixurrs, I don’t think it’s fake. I think it’s real.
I just think it needs to be contained better, cause’ he comes off as an immature frat boy that just slogged down a 60 ouncer and hooked up with a cheerleader and wants all the world to know.
We get it Wussell. You a beast.
Now act like you know that.

  • http://www.twitter.com/_dfrance dfrance21

I personally hate that whole “act like you’ve been here before” approach. You’re out there playing a game, adrenaline is pumping, show some flash. Mean mug the crowd, slap a cheerleader on the azz, throw up gan… wait scratch that, but who cares? The OKC crowd loves it and thats all Russ should care about. If it rubs the opponent the wrong way then beat him and he’ll stop. I once watched a top ten TD celebration list and they had Barry Sanders at #1 because he just scored and handed the ball to the ref. I thought that was so lame. Do a dance, sign the ball, have fun out there! Rant done.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

I think it is just a personality thing. Westbrook is 10,000xx the player that I am, but I would hit the three and casually job back like I do that all day every day. Westbrook would obviously…not, in yet he does “do that every day” compared to me.
It’s not bad, just not for me.

  • ChipS

You guys are hilarious. You guys saying Battier could of walked around Westbrook, Westbrook could’ve easily walked around Battier and celebrated going up the court and getting back on defense. And we must not be watching the same NBA. Westbrook does let the little things bother him. Go watch when Battier played for Memphis, and see why Westbrook got upset for no reason. Or how about when he got upset at Dragic for playing good defense. You all will see my point. And calm down it wasn’t like I said he was a bad player, he just overreacts to things.

  • Bill

Battier tried getting Westbrook more frustrated, and it backfired. That’s exactly what happened, end of story. Battier started the scuffle, refs saw that, and gave both a t. If Westbrook doesn’t respond, nobody gets a t. Ref also took control of the game by giving the double technical. It’s a good job by the ref to prevent it from escalating further and far worse. I wish more refs had the balls to do that. Maybe if LBJ got called for a tech on his first elbow at granger (which granger got the tech for), maybe LBJ doesn’t go for round 2, leading to another granger tech (and if anyone other than LBJ on the chosen team did that, they would have been t’d up and after 2nd elbow suspended

  • NHK

Battier didn’t start squat. He immediately grabbed the ball and headed for out of bounds. He had no idea that little, insecure retard was going to stop dead in his tracks and start posing, blocking Battier’s straight line path towards his destination. Westbrook did that on purpose. Battier raised his arms in a gesture that clearly indicated he wanted no altercation; he simply kept on doing his business. But of course Westbrook needed an edge so he deluded himself into thinking he was being disrespected and like a little child slapped the ball from Battier. Then he started mugging to the crowd as he walked off. What a man. What a role model. If Battier wanted to send the guy a message he could have placed his elbows in his ribs or taken a shot at Westbrook’s nose or something. He had the clear size advantage after all. There was no evil intent there by Battier and certainly no harm. And for the retard to still think he was some victim after the heat of the game was over? To claim he was being punked? Ridiculous. But, hey, they are the media darlings of the NBA so no one will question their character.

  • Clydesays

Russ, Battier does exactly the same thing as your teammate DFish. I expect we’ll see some vintage Fisher flops & fouls. Then, the look of disbelief when he gets called for anything. And trading Rondo for Westbrook doesn’t really do much. I love RR but he’s just as much of a hothead.

  • Layzie

Westbrook acts like a gangsta on the court but dresses like a nerd off the court.

  • MeloMan15

Westbrooks hypness gets me more hyped

  • joe wright

don’t forget when durant tried to punk westbrook during the season and he yelled at him on the bench. he’s one cool customer…

  • ErikM

What do you do when something is in your face? Like a fly. Smack it out your face. I would have done the same. Battier did that on purpose. He knew exactly what he was doing. He walked straight toward Westbrook.

  • http://google Leslie W. Austin

Why is it that these wannabe psychologists claim to know the mindset of Shane and Russell? Sports is a competition and the objective of those competing is to try and get an edge on the opponent(according to the officiating). If Russ was leading Miami’s offense in the NBA Finals these same people would have different opinions of him. OKC fans love him because everything about him brings winning to OKC. When trying to conquer a giant there has to be blood curdling and emotions running on high to be successful. The Mr. Peabody approach doesn’t fly in competition unless you’re the coach.I haven’t seen him trying to start any fisticuffs with other teams. Don’t be whiners Heat fans. The best team will win,”finish it OKC”.

  • http://Slamonline Suita_J83

What’s with the celebration after every point 2nd quarter lay-up then u got to scream about it grow and act like you got some sense the thunder are over actors with no class act like you been there before and be humbled by the expirence punk immature kids I hope the Heat do you guys dirty and show you how a first class organization wins and is humble about it at the same time

  • http://Slamonline Suita_J83

Only a punk would think that someone is trying to punk him, what a beeattch

  • http://facebook jack

Westbrook needs to get over himself and just play team ball…

  • kakaboi69

wHY SOME these guys have capital letter names in blue when other guys just have lower case?
