Seattle Mayor Meets With David Stern In Hopes Of Bringing NBA Back to City

While the residents of Oklahoma City rejoice in postseason success and Finals anticipation, the team that drafted Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook is still on a mission to bring the NBA back to the Emerald City. The Seattle Times has the details: “Mayor Mike McGinn met with NBA Commissioner David Stern in New York City on Monday to tell him Seattle wants to bring back professional basketball. ‘We met so the mayor could show his commitment to bringing an NBA team back to Seattle,’ wrote McGinn spokesman Aaron Pickus in an email. The visit came as a surprise to local representatives of Chris Hansen, the San Francisco hedge-fund manager who is proposing to spend up to $800 million to partially finance a new arena and buy an NBA team. Rollin Fatland, a spokesman for Hansen, said he didn’t know anything about the meeting. ‘What the hell is that about?’ Fatland said, adding that the mayor may have contacted others about the meeting. ‘I’m not aware that anyone asked him to do it.’ The Seattle City Council and Metropolitan King County Council are currently considering a proposal to build a nearly $500 million state-of-the art sports and entertainment venue in the Sodo neighborhood. The public contribution would be capped at $200 million.”

  • logues

Remember when T.O. cried at that post-game press conference when talking about Romo?
    “That’s my quarterback”

Well, along with many other Sonics fans, I’ll be crying tonight when the Thunder tip off in the Finals.
    “That’s my team”

Sonics fans must be pretty envious right now of OKC. Bring ‘em back!

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Logues. That’s the one thing that is for sure. The Name and colors remain. The history is kind of undetermined right now. Right now it’s OKC’s cause why not? Seattle doesn’t have a team, but once they do they need to get back all of THEIR cities history. 79′ Champs is Seattle’s not anyone else’s.

  • vtrobot

I thought they had to bring the team back by a certain time to still be able to use the colors/name. No? The deadline didn’t already pass? I miss that team.

  • jamaal87

Bring back the OKC Zombie Sonics!!

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

vtr, that sounds unfamiliar to me regarding the timeline on the name and colors. There were certain things that were on a time basis, but it was mostly financial. Sonic’s name, Green, and Gold colors are Seattle’s.

  • logues

ya they had some of the best colors and uni’s in nba history. it wouldn’t even be right to not bring back the same colors and name. they are legendary!

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Your a good guy logues. lol.

bring back the Sonics to Seattle

  • LA Huey

Yeah, I think LakeShow’s right. We get the name and colors if we pay for it when/if we get a team back.
btw, “Rollin Fatland” sounds like a fake name.

i visited seattle about a month ago and i was so mad cuz i wanted an old sonics jersey (detlef scrhempf woulda been dope) but was dissapointed cuz they didnt have any.. if only they had a team there im sure they woulda had some. but the ppl there def want the sonics back, every team shop i went into they had all kinds of sonics apparel and “bring back the sonics” banners… but no jerseys

Its funny how everyone is viewing these Finals as the Good Guys (OKC) versus the evil Heat when in all actuality OKC is the dirtiest organization in the league. Clay Bennett came to Seattle and assured everyone his intentions of keeping the Sonics in Seattle when all along that was never the plan. OKC has not earned the right to celebrate a championship yet. This is why i am conflicted on how we go about aquiring a new team, I do not want to take someone elses team the way ours was taken. I could go on but im tired of whining about it. So lets go Heat!!! you have fans in the Northwest counting on you to deny OKC what they havent earned.

  • LA Huey

Brion, OKC is not the “dirtiest” team in the league. The front office is top notch, the players are likeable, the fanbase is great. It’s just those bastards at the very top. But I feel your pain. It’s like someone kidnaps your pet and gives it to a good home.

  • logues

ha thanks Lakeshow. i’d say the same for u but ur obviously a lakers fan…. haha

  • vtrobot

Lake, I think Clay Bennett owns the name and colors, although he said he’d “give” them back to Seattle if they get a team again. Hope they do and hope he does.

@LakeShow: are you rooting for OKC or Heat? i know you dislike bron and Heat, but Durant and Russ should be repping your home city, do you not think that’s even a bigger crime?
i’m in Brion’s camp, and i’ll never root for OKC because of how they did Seattle dirty. To me, it’s like having your kid taken away because you are short on cash at the moment, and someone rich came along and “adopted” the kid. i challenge anyone who doesn’t think that’s fcuked up. Dave Zirin even wrote about this (click my name).

  • http://slamonline Brion

LA Huey, I agree with you 100%, I did not mean the players or the fans,(My aunt lives there and has become a huge fan) doesnt mean i enjoy getting her texts laughing at me after every OKC win but ya I agree. But getting back to “dirty”, I havent even gotten into the whole Owner of Chesapeak Energy looking at major jail time. Sorry I just bleed Green and Gold, I cant just hop onto other teams soo easily..cough,coughLakeshow. (just kidding dude)

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

albie, I root for Durant and Nick Collison as former Sonics. I am big fan of their games. I want ‘them’ to win a championship. The individuals. Fukc the Thunder and Clay Bennett as far as the organization goes they could be rotting in a ditch tomorrow for all I care.
As long as KD and NC go to good team is all that I care for.
I don’t like the Heat as a team. I like LeBron’s game, but can’t bring myself to root for him in any fashion. I don’t hate on them though. They are fun and exciting, but I just don’t find LBJ or Wade to be nearly as impressive as others do sometimes.
Brion, I feel ya, I have always been a 60-40 Sonics-Lakers fan. I consider myself to be a 60-40 Washingtonian-Californian. My family is so mixed between the two states and different family members root (rooted) for both teams so it just grew up rooting for both teams. There’s no “blue-print” to being a fan. I know you were JP’n though.

@LakeShow: good. as long as i know you hate clay bennett’s guts and in no way support the organization, then we are good.
thing is, as a basketball junkie who doesn’t have a favorite team, don’t you think i enjoy watching a player with unlimited range and unbelievable shooting touch? or a player with boundless energy and explosiveness? or a player with immaculate handle and the full offensive arsenal (AND the best beard in NBA)? or an athletic big who excels in shotblocking (which just happens to my favorite part of basketball)? i love the pieces on Thunder and they are very exciting to watch, but every time they succeed in something, i just feel extra bad for Seattleites, and that’s tragic.

Look at wack azz Lakeshow, aka king Bandwagon fan.

As much as I like the team–and really, Paul Pierce might be The Truth; but KD is The Truth, Nothin’ But The Truth, The Absolute Truth, So Help Me Gawd–there is no doubt that Clay Bennett WITH CONSIDERABLE HELP FROM LA COMMISH committed Grand Larceny in moving the Sonics to OKC. Being blunt, I’m surprised McGinn is meeting with Stern at all–I don’t believe that any representative of Seattle or King County should meet with the NBA until Stern vacates the premises…not to say that Adam Silver is going to be any better. But Stern not only participated in snatching the Sonics, but talked smack through the whole thing. Should a city REALLY go back to a guy like that??!?
