Steve Nash Considers New York Knicks a Better Option Than Brooklyn Nets

Steve Nash has yet to figure out where he will go as an unrestricted free agent this summer, but for what it’s worth, Nash says the Knicks have a better shot at landing his services than the Nets would. From Yahoo! Sports: “Nash is expected to be courted by the Phoenix Suns, New York Knicks, Brooklyn Nets, Toronto Raptors and Dallas Mavericks, league sources said. The Knicks already hope to re-sign restricted free agent point guard Jeremy Lin. Nash said Lin’s presence won’t keep him from considering the Knicks. The Knicks, however, are over the salary cap and could need a sign-and-trade with the Suns to land Nash. When asked if the Knicks or Nets were a better option, Nash said: ‘Right now the Knicks. Maybe in the few years the Nets.’ The Nets have salary-cap space to sign Nash and keep Deron Williams. The Nets would welcome the two point guards playing together, a league source said. Nash and Nets coach Avery Johnson are former teammates. Nash also is intrigued by the Nets’ new arena and their move to Brooklyn. [...] ‘Phoenix has been home for 10 years,’ Nash said. ‘It’s a very important place for me. I’m a Phoenix Sun. I still am to this day. It’s definitely still possible. We’ll see what happens.’ A native of Vancouver, British Columbia, Nash was recently named general manager of Canada’s national team. He called the possibility of playing in his home country for the Raptors ‘exciting.’”

    STEVE NASH needs to retire..

  • AT33

    @ALD
No he doesn’t!!! Put him on any good team and he’ll deliver! Dude still got game left! Obviously not MVP type of game but still decent enough to get out over the top.

  • http://nowedsite braxton

steve nash should go to the knicks

  • MeloMan15

why would he need to retire? he’s still a top 10 pg easily

  • J2

    @ALD
Retire? Kidd altered his game and won a ring at 38, same age as Nash right now. And Nash has more game than Kidd at this age. He could push a few more seasons out.

  • http://nba.com GP23

    ^ Top 6 I say.
    Rose
    Paul
    Deron
    Rondo
    Westbrook
    Nash
    (Not in any particular order)

    u forgot parker dude

  • http://nba.com GP23

Damn! I knew there was one. So top 7 then.

  • L Dribble

I’d also put Ty Lawson and John Wall above him at this point in time. Still top 10 although there’s players I’d prefer to him due to potential (Rubio).

  • Ldub

L Dribble is high on something. Neither Lawson or Wall are mature enough to run a team and set the pace. Their decision making is questionable and they rely on their athleticism too much. Once they get the mentality of an nba pg then I can see your agrument. Until then just based on shooting and bball IQ alone…you have to go with Nash. Dude shoots 90-50-40. (90% FT, 50% FG and 40%3pt)…only other player to come close was Steph Curry and he was 90-48-38) or something like that. Id take curry over Wall and Lawson. Rubio before Curry because of his defense.

  • O

Pipe dream for us Knick fans…

  • lososway

he’s not from vancouver, he’s from victoria

  • http://www.slamonline.com Keep It Real

Dont understand all the hype behind Nash’s free agency. PG position in the L is stacked w/ young talent(rose, wall, westbrook, paul, rubio, uncle drew, rondo, lin, conley, collison, lowry, curry, deron!!!) . As good as Nash is on offense he is poor on defense and now he is a year older. He probably goes with whoever can give him the most money.

  • floe

he needs to replace colangelo as GM in toronto once he’s done with his playing career.

  • lakernation

Nash back with Stoudemire is a good idea.

  • Ldub

@Real….all the hype is because he is a great offensive talent and the only other “available” player right now is Williams. If Nash goes to a team like Miami (just throwing them out there because of their great defense)…They will be able to mask his defensive woes. Also his offensive will be the main focus. IQ will be “enough” to contribute on both ends! Lets not forget…he cant play one on one D…but he will take a charge in a minute!

  • 23

Being better than the Nets is not exactly an accomplishment…. Not even sure if its a compliment

  • ALD

@j2 and @at33 jason kidd can play defense and can play more games in a season. Steve nash can do neither.

  • http://www.hoopsworld.com IamYOU

RETIRE?! You kidding me? He still got game and he’s not an injury prone too so stfu! Better go to championship team Nash and shut all the doubters.

  • Mas

NASH is great! We love him in NY/NJ and would like to enjoy his game. I would also like to see KG in NY/NJ. But I still do not see either one of these two teams winning a title BUT they could make it a contest.

  • ALD

STEVE NASH SHOULD RETIRE…. Already said he is content not winning a championship so what is he playing for? He can play but only on the offensive end.

  • Rainman

Retire? LOL funniest comment all year. And yes, by funny i do mean absoultely freaking ridiculous.

  • Rainman

Btw i wouldn’t put parker ahead of nash, he’s still young (believe it or not) but he had a good season, flamed out in the playoffs, and basically had a great season cuz ginobili was injured most of the season, so parker was asked to do more. He’s not a great defender either, and nash is a far superior offensive player. Also, rose is missing most the season, so for THIS season? Nash is probably a top 5 point guard. At age 39. Wow.

  • http://www.sportsgrid.com/media/shaq-kobe-highlights/ shutup

all this talk of Nash not playing D, besides Rondo name a top-10 pg that plays good D, and please don’t say Paul because we all saw what Parker did to him. Better yet make a list of top-10 PG’s and then make a list of the top-10 defensive pg’s, tell me who is on both lists. Also before you go all Derrick Rose on me don’t confuse good team defense or a good defensive team with someone being a “good ” defender.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

His jumper nashty, his handles nashty, that three frow percentage is nashty, court vision…you guessed it, nashty.

  • ALD

@SHUTUP dwill,westbrook,cp3, etc… Tony parker was just in a zone this year. no one can stop him.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

Speculative PG ranking for next season.
    1. Chris Paul(a year of Paul-to-Blake under his belt? Uh-oh)
    2. Deron Williams(wherever he ends up, he will be numero uno)
    3. Rajon Rondo(unofficially the Celts best player from now on?)
    4. Derrick Rose(how will he fair after his ACL work?)
    5. Russell Westbrook(new ‘young money’ in 12/13)
    6. Ricky Rubio(he speaks 2 languages…offense and defense)
    7. Tony Parker(don’t forget, this guy doesn’t defer to Duncan anymore)
    8. Steve Nash (where ever he ends up he will start)
    9. Drue Holiday (this guy still has a high ceiling)
    10. Jeremy Lin(if going off your 2 best months of bball is an indicator)
    11. Kyle Lowry(hopefully will equal or better his stats from last year)
    12. John Wall(when the leadership = the dancing ability, watch out)
    13. Steph Curry(if he gets a healthy Bogut, he’ll be even more dangerous)
    14. Damian Lillard (the best PG in the draft WILL start for someone)

  • jinolin

I have a feeling he is Mia bound, NY should try and trade Amare, get a “jack of all trades” type of a SF move Melo at the 4 and try and get Nash and still be content with third best (long stretch) in the East.

  • Brad09

Chris Paul is the most overrated player ever! he pounds the hell out of the ball, hasnt been to a confrence final. He really needs to do something besides putting up good ppg, apg and steals numbers. I dont think its right to say hes the number one pg at all, not when rose, westbrook, rondo and parker. Ps whoever told u Rubio plays good d is looin for 5 rock.

  • Ldub

As far as defensive pgs…its really hard to say because those guys go through so many pick and rolls, you cant really tell whether or not they are good/great defenders. And trying to stop a player like Rose, Rondo, CP, Parker etc (regardless of your defensive skills) is tough enough. Its kind of like MWP guarding KD. We all know how great they both are on there respective ends…but because KD still scores 30…you cant say Peace isnt a good defender, because that definitely is not true!

I will tell you this though. Rondo, Ty Lawson, Kyle Lowry, Chalmers, Cp3, Rubio, D. Will are all very pesky defenders. Does that mean they are lock down defenders? no. If I had to choose just one…I honestly would say Lowry. Kid is like a bulldog. Came in the league focused on D and it has only improved.

  • Ldub

@Brad…what exactly makes CP3 overrated? He leads pg’s in 4th qtr scoring, basically gets double digit asts, gets his teammates involved (before he gets himself involved), hustles on both ends of the court, goes for loose balls, is extremely coachable, has a unique (Kobe/Jordan) desire to win. His bball IQ is tops in the L and not just for pg’s. And he doesnt “pound” the ball. There are set plays for the “team” that the coach calls. When that breaks down, he has the IQ and skill level to make something out of nothing. Not too many players in the L, let alone a pg at 6ft can do that. And do it effectively. Just because he hasnt made it any significant part of the playoffs doesnt take away from his great play. You cannot put the entire blame on his play for a lack of success (measured by wins). If he goes out and drops 20,10,5 and wins..hes great…if he looses he needs to do more or change his play? You have to look at the surrounding team if youre going to pick out reasons for not succeeding.

Dacre: Missing Kyrie there. And I’ll take Lawson over Lillard, but that’s preference. And Nash’s defense is atrocious. Want me to name point guards who play better defense than Ol’ Stevie? Ok: Rondo, Rubio, Paul, Deron, Kidd, Kyrie, Wall, Holiday, Lawson, Tyreke, Parker, Billups, Westbrook, Chalmers, Collison, Knight, Kyrie, Sessions, Conley, Augustin, Teague, Hill, Lowry, Dragic, Jack, and Jennings. Ok? Basically everyone except Felton, Jameer, and Calderon.

  • Anonymous

Surely Iman Shumpert goes on that list of top 10 defensive PG’s. Kid is an absolute monster when it comes to one-on-one D.

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

Anonymous, if you count him as a PG, absolutely. I classed him as a SG, but that’s preference.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

Thanks for the feed back folks! P.S. my little list there was more of an overall PG list…as opposed to defensive minded PGs but i think you all mostly got that…? Kyrie Erving was my honourable mention….and Jose Calderon I’m a fan of (on because of the lack of turn overs….but yeah)….

So hey…the Suns drafted a PG!!!

?? writings on the wall ??

nash`s free agency is crazy over-hyped. who cares where he goes bec he def wants to get paid meaning he prob wont be going to miami. even if he takes less $$ to join he shouldnt be starting over chalmers who fits the defensive makeup of that team better than nash. so the question is how much does miami want to pay a 39-yr old backup pg? ny and bk can be asked the same question since they want to resign lin and deron as their starting pgs next season. throughout a 16-yr career nash has been on 7 teams that have won 50+ games and 3 that have won at least 60 with 00 final appearances. how many players have been on 10 teams that have won at least 50 games during their careers and never made it to the finals? so many opportunities have been there for this “2-time mvp” winner esp the 2 yrs where he was coined most valuable player. hes had enough amt of chances. so stay in phoenix or go to toronto and call it a career after 2 more yrs.

  • http://bebe310.blogspot.com/ anonymous

    “enough chances”

  • http://eurosport.com Bow down to the Chosen One King James

nash needs to retire…umm WHAT,lol the dude is still playing on an incredibly high level, averaged 2nd most assists last season, with the SUNS.

  • Ldub

Shumpert is definitely a 2 guard.

  • RunNGun

    Make it happen, DOLAN.

  • RunNGun

By the way, SHUMPERT is a SG, not a PG. Whoever thinks otherwise needs to… LEARN THE GAME!
