Thomas Robinson Thinks He Should Be the Top Draft Pick ‘Easily’

Everyone expects Anthony Davis to be the #1 NBA Draft pick this year, but a very confident Thomas Robinson isn’t buying into that notion at all. Per SI: “The annual ritual of NBA prospect chest-puffing took place on Thursday, when former Kansas forward Thomas Robinson reiterated his recent stance that he isn’t among those buying into the Anthony Davis hype. The Kentucky forward is seen as the consensus No. 1 pick in the June 28 draft, and he sauntered into the interview room at the predraft combine wearing a t-shirt that read ‘Check the stats.’ Davis wasn’t asked about the meaning of the shirt, but Robinson wasn’t afraid to share his thoughts when reporters inquired. ‘If you wanted to check the stats, then I’d be the No. 1 pick easily — if that’s what you want to do,’ he said. ‘I should get one of those shirts. I’ll get a shirt that says, ‘Numbers don’t lie.’ Based on the tale of the tape, Robinson — who could go as high as No. 2 to Charlotte but is widely considered a top five pick — has a point. He averaged 17.7 points, 11.9 rebounds and 0.9 blocks per game, while Davis averaged 14.2 points, 10.4 rebounds and an NCAA-leading 4.7 blocks per game. He was then asked if he would be looking for revenge from any team that passes him in the draft. ‘I’m going to go after every team that I step on the floor against,’ Robinson said. ‘There’s really not going to be a specific team that I’m going to point out and just try to kill. I’m trying to kill everybody.’”

T-Rob is going to be a really good player, a better, taller, little more athletic and stronger Boozer (his muscles actually provide strength). He’s going to be a Robin-type player though, I do not like him as the number 1 option, ofcourse he can be sometimes like any good Robin can be, but not consistantly.

  • SKemp

I really admire this guy, he’s a beast!

  • http://www.soundcloud.com/tray-5 T-Ray

I don’t think he’s too far off personally. His numbers were solid just like Anthony. The only reason why I feel Anthony is the #1 because he’s hyped by media and he’s a game changer on the defensive end. Also he used to play the PG so his court vision is probably NBA ready. Either way even if T-Rob is #2,3 etc he’s a hell of a pick.

  • greg

the man is a beast, but im waiting too see how tall he is without shoes and exactly how long his arms are. if he is even just an inch shorter than davis, he will go HAM in the NBA

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca/ niQ

The measurements came out this morning from all those are the Draft Combine. Thomas Robinson 6′ 7.75″ socks 6′ 8.75″ shoes and 7′ 3.25″ wing 8′ 10″ reach.

  • Sparker

kevin durant said stuff like that, and I seem to recall that this convinced lang that kd would be better than oden. “better than oden.” man, unless you’re a portland fan, that is one funny thing to type now.

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca/ niQ

    Anthony Davis 6′ 9.25″ socks 6′ 10.5″ shoes and 7′ 5.5″ wing 9′ 0″

6’8 isn’t too bad considering his jumping ability. I think he could be like Charles Barkley as far as an undersized forward.

  • Fresh Boirdee

Davis is the next Tyson Chandler

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Did someone just compare TRob to Charles Barkley? Oh…lawdy

  • http://www.soundcloud.com/tray-5 T-Ray

C’mon JT you knew what I meant. Comparing him saying as far as an undersized foward with his jumping ability he could be like him in the future. Never said he is like him now.

    I love this dude.

  • nate84

TRob will be a above average player maybe not a superstar but a 35+ mpg starter. Anthony Davis will be about the same type of player, if he can learn how to score a little better he might some day reach that superstardom status but I doubt it. I would take TRob over Davis but that is because I think he would be able to put points on the board right away. Davis would be a good defender but he really doesn’t have a lot of offensive skills right now. A few years from now maybe but TRob would be my pick.

i love how robinson and davis are both post players! my favorite part of basketball is post play. whether it be on offense, defense, by a center or by a point guard i think post play is the best part of basketball. you gotta be strong to back down your opponent, but still gotta have that soft touch to finish around the rim

  • Justin05

Lol didn’t Kentucky knock out Kansas in the NCAA tourney? T rob is just mad about that still. Michael is going to be better than both of them anyway. I hope he stays quite an gets drafted to another team than the bobcats.

  • http://Slamonline.com Datkid

I mean how monstrous would a healthy Oden have been tho?

Other than points and rebounds, and 3pt shooting I think, Robinson’s stats weren’t better than Davis. His FG% wasn’t better. His FT% wasn’t better. His blocks sure as hell weren’t better. And Davis surely had a better PER. Obviously it ain’t all about stats T-Rob. LOL! Still sounding kind of hurt about that loss young man.

I see some mocks have Robinson going at like #5. How pissed would he be if that happened?

  • Mo

“Robinson was about two hours late for his 1 p.m. scheduled media appearance at the Draft Combine in Chicago on Thursday. Scheduled at the same time as expected No. 1 pick Anthony Davis, Charlotte media folks were quick to establish positioning at Robinson’s table, hoping Davis would absorb the crowd.

Instead, those waiting for Robinson saw Davis come and go with 22 other prospects over the next hours before Robinson appeared.”

Dude needs to learn to be on time. This is the big time now youngster. Instead of worrying about Davis’ shirt, learn to be on time.

  • Brad09

wouldnt touch the kid with a ten foot stick, phrases like plays hard and strong follow this guy everywhere. Immediate impact?? sure so was Tyrus Thomas. Dont like his game, play mechinical will never get the touches he got at Kansas. Will be eaten up by NBA bigs. Great life story but this time it dosent reflect his playing abilities. Overly cocky attitude even after he was Beat in the tourney, real classy. Show some respect to Davis who barely had to wake up and still appeared to be he better prospect. Robinson better learn some respect or hell be out of the league in 2 years.

  • http://www.facebook.com/wealwayswin Hersey

I like Robinson’s attitude but it’s not even clear he’s the 2ND best player in this draft. He didn’t play that well vs Davis in the National Championship game.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

He just flat out doesn’t deserve to be the number one pick. Anthony David put up a double double last season with 4.7BPG – He’s the clear cut best player in the country.

  • Polow Da Jon

I always like the height while in socks then in shoes. We dont play ball in socks gentlemen! Who cares about the height, its the wingspan that’s the key. Look at Taj Gibson or Rondo with those Inspector Gadget arms!

  • bike

The big difference between these two is that Davis was a major game changer in almost every game. He doesn’t need to score at all to still have a major impact. All you have to do is watch Davis move and run the floor to see how much better he is than T-Rob. Not even close.

  • Jayson

Both are really good players but Anthony Davis college resume is amazing and I would go with him as the No. 1 pick if I am a GM. Also, the shirt Davis had on was Check My Stats tee by Courtcred.com. They released them in 2010 for only elite players. Just found out you can now buy one and thy are pretty dope so I may get one at Courtcred.com

  • enimeny

Seen someone jus compared robinson to charles barkley. The only thing even remotely close to a charles barkley in this present day is udonis haslem. Thomas robinson is physically gifted but he hasn’t tapped into his potential fully. His scoring is not that fantastic, his defense is not great either blocking less than a shot per game. But anthony davis is a monster on the defensive end of the courting blocking an insane almost 5 blocks a game. His scoring is not bad either. Plus anthony is a game changer, the opposition will not drive into the paint often when davis is in the game.

  • T-Rob

In that interview, he said “I don’t wanna be the top pick, I wanna be the best pick.” Writer forgot to point that out

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

T-Ray, I know what you meant. Just trying to start sh*t.

JT trying to start sht? Oh lawd…

And the f*ck is up with the name stealing cuz I know that ain’t Caboose.

  • nate84

Everyone knows Davis is going to be the number one pick and Robinson will go top 5. That doesn’t mean it’s the right pick. I would rather have a scorer than a shot blocker. Robinson will get better defensively as he gets experience, offense is a gift and harder to learn. That is my opinion on it. Robinson is a beast and is already in NBA shape, Davis needs to get stronger if he wants to be effective in the NBA.

  • Jerome

Charles Barkley would eat Haslem alive … but he’s on a diet currently.

  • Chuck

Thomas should trybto get a deep whiff of reality. Although he is an excellent player, he reminds me more of Charles Oakley than anyone else. He is not an exceptional shooter and is fully physically developed. So is Derek Williams who couldn’t do the same things in the pros as he did in college.

Now AD! A once in a generation talent who like KD as he fills out will be an entirely different player. He is flawless: can shoot, can handle, a terrific passer, has the best hands of any big man I have ever seen, can hop and hop quickly and repeatedly, has incredible timing, can run like a deer and covers ground like Bill Russell. Plus, he is unflapple.

Outside if these attributes, he is an average prospect.

  • haslem

Davis’s ppg/rebounding stats are just a notch below Robinson’s and he played on a stacked Kentucky team. Get real. It’s the 0.9 blocks per game versus the 4.7 that jumps out at me.

  • Dave Fisher

T Rob is comparing apples to oranges if he is going solely on stats. If Davis had been on most teams other than Kentucky then his stats would have been much higher. He was surrounded by 5 other players about to be drafted in the NBA. Maybe T Rob is still butt sore from the 2 (yes TWO) times UK put KU down last season. I hope his “look at me” attitude gets him drafted #2 to the Bobcats. That is a fate worse than purgatory. I hope that because Kidd-Gilchrist doesn’t deserve that.

  • LA Huey

^Exactly. 4 more blocks a game is HUGE.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

The best player out of this draft will be Kidd-Gilchrist. BOOK IT!!

  • Dejjy

Comparing a freshman to a junior is silly to me. Even still though, Davis has the highest efficiency rating in the nation and he’s only a freshman. If he gets used to his handles at his height and develops more physically, I want to see him in an isolation situation. T-Rob, I love your story but what do you do to help your team if you don’t score? Rebounds yes, Davis has that too. How about leading the break, altering shots, and interior passing? Oh and stealing.

  • Gregg

Tyler Zeller will be better than all of them. Book THAT. ;)

  • dan thomas

Jonas Valanciunas would have killed T Rob and Davis in college ball as a 19 year old .

  • Liam

Davis won a championship as a freshman, Thomas was a backup to Marcus Morris as a freshman. How is that for a stat Thomas

  • http://slamonline.com Mars

The Seed is wise, and true. The top five are all likely bust. I hope not though. Some steals in the draft: Terrence Jones, PF (Kentucky) Terrence Ross, SG (Washington) Draymond Green, PF (Michigan State), (ya’ll forgot about Dray) Will Barton, SG (Memphis) John Jenkins, SG (Vanderbilt). JJ Got Game

  • Basketball iQ

    #1 davis,
    #2 Barnes
    #3 MKD
    #4 Drummond
    #5 TRobinson
    there it goes…book it dan-O

  • BenH

Ok, check the stats. Davis was clearly vastly superior to T Rob on defense, and T Rob slightly superior on offense. That alone puts Davis comfortably above T Rob. But even worse, T Rob was the clear go-to guy for Kansas, while Davis had to share the ball with 5 other guys who averaged double digits. Case closed.
