Nine of 12 Olympic Spots Secured for USA Basketball

USA Basketball head honcho Jerry Colangelo announced on Monday that only 3 spots remain for the national team heading to the London Summer Olympics. Fox Sports has the details: “Colangelo said 2008 Olympic holdovers LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul and Deron Williams are assured of being on the team in London along with 2010 World Championship holdovers Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, Kevin Love and Tyson Chandler. Colangelo said that leaves six players vying for the final three spots as Team USA will have practices Friday and Saturday in Las Vegas before the team is announced at 7 p.m. EDT Saturday in a selection show being televised by NBA TV. They are Blake Griffin, Andre Iguodala, Rudy Gay, James Harden, Eric Gordon and Anthony Davis. Despite a sprained ankle that could sideline him this week, Colangelo said Davis remains under consideration for the team. Colangelo said Lamar Odom dropped out Monday, leaving Team USA with 15 finalists. He said there will be no further additions to the team. The three finalists who don’t make the 12-man roster will be alternates. ‘We will not be adding anybody,’ Colangelo said. ‘We feel good with what we have.’ […] All players are due to report in Las Vegas Thursday, with training camp starting Friday and running through July 12. However, several players on the bubble will arrive earlier and have a workout Thursday. The workout initially was going to be for Griffin, Odom and Davis. But with Odom dropping out and Davis hurting, Colangelo said Harden will now join the workout. He said it’s possible some other players also could arrive early. Team USA has been plagued numerous defections since 20 finalists were named last January. Since then, seven of the finalists have dropped out. Two more were added to the team in May in Davis and Harden. Dropping out due to injury have been Dwight Howard, Derrick Rose, Chauncey Billups, LaMarcus Aldridge, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. Then there was Monday’s defection of Odom. The only four true post players remaining are Chandler, Love, Griffin and Davis. However, James and Anthony can play power as well as small forward.”

If there’s any possibility that his ankle will be okay before the Olympics, I’d choose Davis. Lebron will probably spend a lot of time at the 4, but if the team has to go big it’s really weak defensively at the 4.

This team is built to run.
Iguodala and Gay are the two most likely candidates. They need another big man though. Not sure Griffins game is suited internationally, but if he plays the 5 and they decide to run.. watch out.

Griffin would be a terrible, terrible choice. European game requires more than just athleticism.

  • Jer dawg

Politics! Davis will be on team just because they say so. He will do fine just watching Tyson chandler play defense and catching lobs from the point guards.

  • bdogg

i would go davis if he wants to play..we have no bigs at all! i would go davis and harden but that is just me! Lo even if he wanted to play should not be on the team. he is probably not in shape and i do not want that circus..sorry!

Yall hating on Griffin…..He’s a very physical player so he’ll be ok.

  • Drig

Griffin doesn’t have a good outside shot or has a great defensive presence. Having Iggy/Gay would make more sense as the team could run and utilize their athleticism. When you’re oldest top-tier player ( Kobe ) is atleast as athletic as the best young international player, you better play uptempo all time.

Hardin, Gordon, and Davis should get it. Hardin has a lot of skills. He can score and/or distribute. Gordon can score so many ways. I take Athony Davis over Blake Griffin due to Davis being a better defender. Both Davis and Griffin have a good but raw offensive game but I still give the nod to Davis. He’s a little more fundamental.

gordon blake davis … just gone head and get it over with

    USA basketball baby

We need bigs so davis and blake are automatic.
Gordon has the one attribute none of those other guys/guard/forwards have, … he was “the” shooter for the 2010 team. He out shot Curry and knocked downed his threes at about a 50% clip. Not to mention gives us back our Wade-factor off the bench penetrating drawing fouls.
    Hes a LOCK
For Iggy its simple: hes Lebron-lite, therefore his model is obsolete,,, dont need’em.

Gay is similar to Melo only 60lbs lighter and cant score as easily.

Davis gets us back that Bosh/Odom factor in guarding the best of their bigs and then beating them down the floor on the other end for easy buckets.
Plus davis and blake will definitely be highlight reels waiting to happen with CP3 running the show.
You heard it here 1st. Blake Davis Gordon
If Davis cant go, Iggy all day.

I’d pick Davis, if he’s healthy. Shot blocking and rebounding always helps! Then I’d probably go with Iggy and Harden. Iggy isnt beneath doing all of the little things that will help this team win and although Harden disappeared in the Finals, he can create off the dribble and knock down the open jumper.

do any of u guys have any ill will towards the 04 olympic team led by AI and Duncan and Larry Brown as the head coach…when LBJ was comin off the bench??

  • MirChilly

So Davis is considered for the team yet he has done nothing in the NBA but Demarcus Cousins and Greg Monroe are denied? Cousins gives them a big, young physical center who can score and rebound and Monroe is a great passing and playmaking big, yet Davis get’s the spot… wow

  • 23

blake because we need more size. and in the olympics players tend to do the dirty work theyre not normally known for. so i would guess blake would commit to being extremely physical and of course catching lops and finishing on the break. iggy, because we can never have too much defense. and davis would be good, but his health is a big question mark. so i like having the instant offense of eric gordon off the bench.

  • B.C.

They are going to give the final 3 spots to Blake Griffin, Anthony Davis, and Rudy Gay the reason being is the US needs size to match up with Spain.

  • http://slamonline.com dma

If blake griffin goes to the olympics, and does his usual mean muggin, he better expect some hard fouls, and no refs to bail him out.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

    RGay/Harden/Davis (if healthy)
Gay because it gives Team USA another versatile 3 that can play either the 2 or 4.
Harden because all the flopping he does fits perfectly with the international game.
Davis just being there around the team will help his game grow by leaps/bounds.

@the babe hte european game? it’s the olympics, not the euroleague they r going to play in. try international game

  • Jerome

I would bring Harden, Griffin, Davis (if healthy). Iggy ifthe Brow is hobbled. They will not need bigs other than what they have. Spain would’ve been tough if Rubio was running.

  • bravo

  • Pais

Some of you guys make too much out of the whole “European game” thing. When you’re talking about guys of Rondo’s calibre, or Griffin’s freakish athletic abilities I promise you, forget about the different style of the european game. He would clean up boards with less difficulty than usual, be simply murderous on the break, and average 15 a game just from garbage buckets and put-backs.

  • http://Slamonline.com Datkid

Gordon, Gay, and Griffen Gordon bc of how well he did last year, Gay bc although I hate picking Rudy Gay over anybody he can defend international PF’s decently, and Griffen bc Anthony Davis is hurt, and looks a little too skinny for international play. If Anthony Davis can play tho…. He should

  • http://www.pisforprops.com jadams12

No Demarcus Cousins? Thats pretty insane considering he’s the perfect 5 for the international game. He can rebound, pass, can protect the rim, and is better fit to defend either of the Gasol Brothers in the championship game. If they brought over Carlos Boozer to be the wide body back in 08, why wouldn’t Cousins be in consideration here?

  • Lin4President

They need a SG to back up Kobe. Harden seems to be a better scorer than Iggy, but I would have to go with Iggy for his versatility. And he is good enough to knock down shots. There are enough scorers with Kobe, KD, Melo and Bron. Go with Gay for similar reasons. Go with Griffin, because cosigning Pais, his freak athleticism is not exactly going to be useless in international ball. At the end of the day, he is still one of the best ballers in the world.

  • Drig

Why is Blake being considered over Iggy??? Just because of his size and flopping?? Iggy can space the floor better, guard 2 to 4 appreciably well, can run just as well as Griffin and is a decent rebounder for his size. Also, Griffin is gonna be called for fouls and will expect hard fouls if he continues the off-hand push.

  • http://www.yahoo.com The Fury

Anthony Davis is too young to match up against the Gasols, if they meet in the Olympics. Pau will make him foul out in 5 mins. Not hatin’ on the kid though, just expressing how I analyze things for the moment. Moose should be there because he’s unorthodox and already have the old man game. Griffin will be there because some dudes will basically be “intimidated” by his presence. And nobody’s have the nerve to contest his dunks when he’s on the air.

  • http://slamonline.com Datkid

nah I wanted Demarcus cousins on there Jadams but teams would zone him up super fast… plus he struggles against the high P&R. I think if greg monroe could defend he’d be perfect for the team. also blake is being considered over Iggy bc TEAM USA NEEDS BIG MEN. and cosign the fury…as I said before Davis isn’t ready to meet the gasols.

  • Cameron

Rudy Gay for his offense, Andre Iguodala for his defense, and Blake Griffin just because we need another big.

  • luv2ball

USA basketball picks players on more than just basketball. These guys are representing the USA. Demarcus Cousins is too immature to represent the USA at this point in time. I think guys like Ron Artest and Zach Randolph (in the past) have had the talent to play for team USA however, these guys would cause an international incident.

Harden vs. Gordon, Iggy vs. Gay, and Davis vs. Griffin…. the last slots will be filled by Harden, Iggy and Davis…. Iggy is a team oriented as well as Harden and Davis…. the best to substitute…
