Atlanta Hawks Reportedly Trade Joe Johnson to Brooklyn Nets

Looks like the Nets aren’t waiting for Dwight Howard’s situation to get resolved before making moves. According to Nets Daily, they just went ahead and traded for Joe Johnson, whose contract will have Brooklyn unable to re-sign Deron Williams and still make a deal for the Orlando big man this summer. More details: “The Nets have all but completed a trade for Joe Johnson, the six-time all-star, league sources tell NetsDaily. In return, the Hawks get expiring contracts and a first round pick. NOT included in the trade: MarShon Brooks and Gerald Green. The Nets also didn’t have to give up their own first round pick in the trade. The trade will not be finalized until July 11. Johnson, who is still owed $89.3 million over the next three years, was dealt for Anthony Morrow; Jordan Farmar, who will be bought out at Atlanta’s expense; Jordan Williams, Johan Petro, a signed-and-traded DeShawn Stevenson and the Rockets 2013 lottery protected first round pick.”

This is a coupe. You give up nothing, get back Joe. I hate Joe’s contract, but this is still a steal.

  • John

dumb trade…he’s not worth 89 million for the next three years

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

So they are going to likely resign Deron.
They have Deron, Gerald, Joe Johnson, Brooks, Lopez and Green.
That’s a playoff level squad in the East right now. And, if they can get Dwight to sign via free agency, they will be straight in the off season. I need to look at their cap numbers though.
Joe Johnson is perfectly suited to being the second or third best player on your team. This is fact.

  • https://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Allen, they are basically folding on the hopes of getting Dwight. Unless they plan on jettisoning Gerald Wallace or Joe Johnson for nothing before free agency next year.

  • i_ball

    90 million??? Dude got paaaaid:)

  • http://www.slamonline.com Redd

talent wise, this trade is awful. Get ready to see the Nets replace the Hawks in the playoffs this year.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Redd

They got a bunch of nobodies though and a protected pick.

  • CARTEL

I agree, but I thought Deron and Howard would be a better fit. But being that I’m sure Deron was NOT gonna re-sign, they made that trade…Now I’m wondering if Deron will definitely go to Dallas now…

  • http://www.slamonline.com Redd

Deron Williams is definitely not going to Dallas now. New organization, new city, new fanbase. That, along with a line-up consisting of Deron Williams, Joe Johnson, Gerald Wallace, and Brook Lopez; with a bench of Gerald Green and Marshon Brooks. Damn. I really hope they don’t get Dwight Howard now, that team will be too good.

  • D12FSU

wheres the $$ for Dwight(mare) going to come from now

  • https://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

This trade was only going down if Brooklyn new Deron would resign. So basically, Deron Williams is resigning with Brooklyn. Dwight’s demands are irrelevant, he is not playing in Brooklyn. The Nets didn’t have the pieces to make a trade, and don’t have the patience to be horrible for another year while Deron goes to Dallas. Dwight to LA, Hou, or GS this year or Atlanta next summer (they now have a ton of money, and Dwight’s BFF Josh Smith) are most likely scenarios. Dwight to Dallas isn’t dead either.

  • Mariano

I hope ATL starts rebuilding now. They are the perfect example of a team who’s always stuck in the middle

  • thor

Well, I like this for the Hawks. Fact is that they were not going anywhere with that squad and especially not with Joe’s big azz contract which obviously limited them big time. Danny Ferry is doing what Sund couldn’t and that’s showing some guts. I love Joe Johnson, but his role was just wrong on this team. I’m not saying that Hawks are better off without him, cause they are not, but this was a good bold move for the long run. This is exiting!!

  • davidR

i’m with you nbk (the real one?). joe’s contract is horrible, but the nets got him for nothing

  • https://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    yea the real one lol

  • Myung

So the going rate for a 6 time All Star shooting guard (one of the 5 best in the entire world right now) who’s still in his prime is a package full of scrubs (has been’s and never will be’s). And yet we’re supposed to be happy about this trade because the Joe contract (at least at the price we paid, which was some $30 million over his market value) never should have happened in the first place? I guess so. This is what it’s like to be a Hawks fan: you lose your (overpaid) best player for NOTHING, and you’re supposed to be happy. You’ve been one of the top 10 teams in the NBA for the past 4 seasons, yet because your ceiling is limited, you’re supposed to be thrilled because we can now rebuild again for the FOURTH time in the past 13 years (the Shareef and Jason Terry era, the Al Harrington era, the Joe Johnson and Josh Smith and Al Horford era, and now this). Seriously. This is life as a Hawks fan.

  • https://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i really feel for Myung. That’s some tough ass sh*t to stay loyal through. At least you guys will have a ton of money next summer, in Dwight’s hometown, with Josh Smith on the roster. They may have become, by trading with the current favorites, the new favorites to land Dwight long term.

  • Brahsef

Yeah can’t see how people are not likin this for the Nets. Joe’s contract sucks, but he’s way better than what they traded him for. And in two years, you can try and shop him as a huge expiring contract (unless for some reason they can’t. I’d still be for the trade though)

  • Myung

Thanks for 7 great seasons. You were emotionless and for two seasons, overpaid… But you were the second best Hawks player of my lifetime (sad but true). I won’t miss your contract but will miss you, Joe.

  • http://thahiphopcorner.com Kevin

I like this deal. No sense in waiting for Dwight’s soap opera BS, trade for JJ who is sitll a top flight SG in the league. Keep Deron and build with what you have. If they keep Deron they’re a top 4 team out East…maybe?

  • MeloMan15

@Myung what a hard life you Hawks fans have? pshh… try being a Raptors fan.

  • http://www.slamonline.com aman from arkansas

They can resign DWill and trade Lopez,Brooks,Wallace, and Humphies or Green for Dwight and Hedo could that work out.

  • Myung

It’s the rare win win trade. Brooklyn gets a 6 time all star at the tail end of his prime (one of the best shooting guards in the world, who also happens to play tremendous defense). he’s not a leader but won’t need to be if Deron re-signs. the nets would have a pretty sick core. and the Hawks dump a contract that was thought to be unmovable. we hit our ceiling last year as a second round team. it was time to blow it up. Sucks, but it was the only real option. Being bad is better than being perpetually mediocre.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

it could legally, but it can’t in terms of what Orlando will accept.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Dagger

I don’t know what to make of this trade. On the one hand, it’s known that Orlando’s owner wants veteran pieces in exchange for Howard, so the Nets might not be quite out of the Howard chase. On the other hand, Johnson may have talent but his might be the worst contract in the NBA. Without Howard, the Nets are setting themselves up to be no better than decent for the foreseeable future, even if Williams resigns. And if Deron’s out, they have two really overpaid players on a team full of nobodies. They better hope Lopez can develop into a guy who can grab more rebounds than Bargnani.

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

Dwight is probably Houston or LA-bound

  • thor

Dagger, why would Orlando want veterans? They need to rebuild.

  • anonymous

since brooklyn got JJ`s ridiculous contract on their salary now atlanta would be in a favorable position to trade for dwight and sign deron too. horford, teague & draft picks for dwight would probably suffice. I think dwight is from atl so he would be open to atl and if dwight goes there deron would consider it too. josh smith could also resign with atl if dwight and deron goes there

  • Mike

So when the trade is finalized I’m expecting to see joe Johnson deron Williams and Jason Kidd right? That’s one hell of a backcourt

  • $tacks

This hurts as a Hawks fan, but it is a good move. Hawks now have a LOT of money to sign new players. Maybe this will keep Josh Smith cool too, as he is now aware that he is not the focal point of the blame for the Hawks mediocrity. Horford seems loyal to the franchise, Keep him, Josh, and Teague and add two or more players if possible with all the money saved off this trade…

Food for thought: Jamal Crawford is a free agent…. Might be coming back to ATL?

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

now hearing this trade does not definitely mean Deron is resigning. Although that’s what everyone was originally saying.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

If the nets get Howard the playoffs are a given. They would totally be New York’s team.

  • Myung

I hope the Hawks fans here have the decency to give Joe a standing O when Brooklyn visits Atlanta next season. He deserves it. Just because he signed an absurd contract doesn’t mean HE did anything wrong. He played his heart out for our team and city for the 7 years he was here, and there’s not a person alive who would turn down a $126 million contract if a team tells you it wants to build completely around you. Jason Terry played so hard for us on several bad Hawks teams, and then he was traded to Dallas in a salary dump like this (we had to get rid of Alan Henderson’s terrible contract). JET was one of my favorite Hawks players ever, and when he came back into town, I got on my feet and cheered for him… but most of the fans in attendance BOOED him, like he was just another visiting player. That shows the collective basketball fan IQ of this city. I just hope they don’t do the same for Joe. He deserves better than that. His contract was a crippling blow for the franchise, but we still need to appreciate the 7 years he played for us, particularly in 2005, when no one else wanted to play here (that was after we won 13 total games in the 2004-05 season).

  • LA Huey

Oh, man. This is pretty cool for the Nets and hilariously awful news for Dwight. Dude, finally decides where he wants to go and it immediately becomes an improbable trade destination.

  • sid

brooklyn are now the atlanta hawks. gerald wallace at 6-7 is a sf making $10 mil for the next 4 yrs all guaranteed and j johnson`s natural position is also sf at 6-8. johnson is set to make $89.3 mil over the next 4 seasons so they now have 2 starting sfs who will take up abt $32 mil of their cap for the next 3-4 years. This trade his its pros and cons for both teams but I like atlanta finally clearing salary space so they can move on.

  • LA Huey

I feel for Hawks fans though. I’d rather be a 2nd round team with a puncher’s shot at the Conference Finals for 4-5 years than spend the next 5 years rebuilding with no guarantee you’ll exceed the current ceiling.

  • Myung

So if this trades goes through, the Hawks are CLEARLY rebuilding and will have a ton of salary cap room next year. That means we should be good again in 2 seasons, at the earliest? Had we kept Joe, we would’ve been able to dump his salary in the 5th year to a team wanting to acquire an expiring deal. So in reality, whether we traded him or not, by locking Joe into that ridiculous contract in July of 2010, we killed our chances of competing for years to come. I guess this trade just dropped the number from 5 years to 4? Is that really a win? I don’t know.

  • sid

    “has”

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Myung, Atlanta immediately becomes MAJOR player in free agency and have 2 All Star Forwards (Horford is a forward imo). It’s pretty conceivable that they even make the playoffs (since the East is so top heavy) this season.

  • thor

@Myung The hawks are not done dealing this year

  • Mike

I’d be surprised if deron williams doesn’t sign here now though. Isn’t he giving up 27 mil if he leaves?

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

    roughly

  • MirChilly

I could see ferry flipping that pick to the Rockets for Kevin Martin. Martin contract expires soon and a team of Teague, Martin, Josh, Al and Marvin is decent fringe playoff team. Plus it gives them the freedom to get Dwight next summer which will make the Hawks pretty scary

  • http://www.xvideos.com keep it real

WOW!!! Billy King has proved me wrong…. They gonna have the best backcourt in the league with Williams and Johnson. A forward in Gerald Wallace that can defend and produce on the offensive end. The only question now is KNICKS VS. NETS ?? Also the hawks are looking like they trying to get shabazz

  • Blamo

C Brook Lopez,PF Kris Humphries, SF Gerald Wallace, SG Joe Johnson, PG Deron Williams then marshon Brooks coming off the bench

  • http://www.rich-imaging.com Dutch Rich

Hello Joe! I wouldn’t unpack if I were you….could be a possible sign and trade.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Dagger

Thor: Orlando’s owner wants vets because he wants to win now. Why? He’s 86. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_DeVos

    Shout out to Dan Roundfield…
An all time Hawk, and perhaps among the most underrated players of his generation.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Co-sign Huey. This works out great for the Nets, horribly for Dwight Howard. Now I really hope Houston can snag him.
