Atlanta Hawks Reportedly Trade Joe Johnson to Brooklyn Nets

Looks like the Nets aren’t waiting for Dwight Howard’s situation to get resolved before making moves. According to Nets Daily, they just went ahead and traded for Joe Johnson, whose contract will have Brooklyn unable to re-sign Deron Williams and still make a deal for the Orlando big man this summer. More details: “The Nets have all but completed a trade for Joe Johnson, the six-time all-star, league sources tell NetsDaily. In return, the Hawks get expiring contracts and a first round pick. NOT included in the trade: MarShon Brooks and Gerald Green. The Nets also didn’t have to give up their own first round pick in the trade. The trade will not be finalized until July 11. Johnson, who is still owed $89.3 million over the next three years, was dealt for Anthony Morrow; Jordan Farmar, who will be bought out at Atlanta’s expense; Jordan Williams, Johan Petro, a signed-and-traded DeShawn Stevenson and the Rockets 2013 lottery protected first round pick.”

Marvin Williams traded for Devin Harris

    Thats crazy….

  • l2ising Phoenix

    Sweet. D Harris behind teague?

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Devin Harris is expiring. He is not Atlanta’s 3rd best trade chip behind Horford and Smith. His $10M can get you a free-agent in a sign-and-trade or be included in a deal for Deight that rids Orlando of Hedo.

The knowledge of the CBA on this board is nonexistent. Nets cannot sign or trade for Dwight now. If anything, the Joe Johnson trade is good for the Mavs. Boils down to whether you would rather play with Dirk (and possibly Dwight now) or JJ? Easy decision. Keep in mind, JJ’s contract isn’t going anywhere for the next few years. This Brooklyn team still won’t win.

  • Sam Chisholm

well this is good for dallas fans because it means deron williams is now choosing between dirk nowitzki the 2011 finals mvp and mark cuban who will spend money to put a team around them plus the possibility of still playing with dwight in dallas after next season if hes not traded, or playing with joe johnson who is an offense killer that has never made it past the second round in the play-offs. dirk is 34 while johnson is 31 but johnson plays a much more punishing style. this doesnt seem like the nets are trying to build their team it seems like they are trying to get something to sell tickets in brooklyn because they think deron is leaving. this is not a championship callibor team like they would have been had they waited for dwight howard. not a smart trade.

  • Heals

Sucks now, but Hawks are better for it. If you think this is bad Myung (figure of speech not saying you do, obviously you’ve been to this dance before), at least you guys got the dude traded, whereas Chi-town can’t even unload Boozer for 5 scrubs. Ditto on nbk about Horford at PF, dude is sooo underrated because he’s forced to play out of position. As for BK, I love the move given the circumstances their in (some because of their own doing) with needing to fill a new arena, establish the a brand and compete with the Knicks locally…

  • Heals

If Dal comes up empty, then we gotta revisit letting Ty go to NY. Cube’s and Dal wanted DWill or Dwight (or both, but that was PeterPan dreaming). If they knew they would strike out, would they keep Dirk and Ty together? I only bring it up because I thought Chandler perfectly complimented Diggler’s game and could’ve for at least 3 years…

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Uhm, taking into account the CBA, Deron Williams can make somewhere around $27 million dollars to resign in Brooklyn. Plus, Dallas is Dirk plus nobody. While New Jersey is Joe Johnson + 2 All Star Caliber guys. And everyone keeps talkin like Joe Johnson isn’t a very good player, is old (he’s 31), and guys dont like to play with him (Derrick Rose wanted JJ more than any player in 2010 FA Class) the last time he played a non primary role he lead the league in 3pt %, i think for almost any player Money + Being the Star Player + A Huge Market are more important than playing at home.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

And Mikael Porkorov is the richest owner in ALL of professional sports. “mark cuban who will spend money to put a team around them “….lol

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

I mean Mark Cuban does spend money to win and all, but if a guy TRADES FOR JOE JOHNSON he doesn’t give a flying squirrel f*ck about money.

  • Myung

heals, it’s hard to fathom we’re giving away a 6 time All Star two guard (the position with the greatest scarcity in the NBA right now) and a guy who was picked over Chris Paul and Deron Williams……..for a bunch of scrubs, a 2013 first round pick, and Devin Harris. BUT I’m still happy that we’re finally re-building and that we were able to dump the seemingly un-dump-able contract. Seriously… if this trade goes through, the entire sports landscape should pay attention and it’s a very important point: EVERY single contract, no matter how bad it is, CAN be traded. You just have to find the right trading partner. When Joe signed that contract, I don’t think a person alive thought the Hawks could move him until he was at least 4 years into it. Seriously… no one ever mentioned another team having the guts, stupidity, and/or money to acquire that sort of contract. Yet it apparently is going to happen. Which should give fans of every team that has one or two players with TERRIBLE contracts a reason to hope. Again… all you need is a trading partner who will meet you halfway. The other teams in the League might scoff… all it takes is one. While I can’t believe we’re getting nothing back for Joe (except for major cap relief), I’m even MORE shocked that a team would seriously consider taking on his contract. It’s almost unfathomable.

  • MirChilly

@ NBK… Very true! Nets ownership will make more money from the surrounding property and events at the arena than the actual team. The Nets just have to be playoff contenders. They needed a name and Joe gives them that

  • http://www.newyorkshockexchange.com Shock Exchange

Wait until BK fans witness Johnson’s terrible selection and the fact that the production and leadership one would expect to come along with his contract are nonexistent. NYC is not Arkansas or the ATL. Eventually the novelty of having a team in Brooklyn will wear off and fans will hold Johnson accountable.

  • sid

atlanta is not done yet after trading joe johnson and marvin williams. I think theyre acquiring expiring contracts and another 1st rounder to go after dwight. dwight is from atlanta and good friends with j smoove who has one more year left on his contract. deron will likely wait to see if dwight is traded to dallas or somewhere else (possibly atlanta) before he makes the biggest decision of his career. deron has not committed to bk yet and it would be funny if he doesnt resign with bk. Sources say that: The Hawks-Nets trade is NOT contingent on Deron Williams staying with Nets

  • http://www.newyorkshockexchange.com Shock Exchange

CORRECTION: My previous post should have read “terrible shot selection …” Whether Johnson is a terrible selection remains to be seen.

  • sid

since JJ will be getting over $20 mil a yr I wonder how much bk thinks deron`s asking price will be? theres only abt $65 mil available for each team to spend with the exception of the MLE. deron will at least want $20 mil. $20 mil (deron) + $20 mil (JJ) + $10 mil (g wallace) = financial trouble for bk. what about the other 12 players on the roster? how much is lopez set to make?

  • Trilla

Horford, Teague (if not Teague then some expiring contracts), some picks, and Devin Harris for Dwight and Hedo? Would that work?

  • Heals

Yeah Myung, I mean RashardLewis’s contract has been traded TWICE! In a way it’s like this was the perfect storm for Atl to be able hit the reset button (but at least you got a game saved with Teague, Horford and Smith) since BK can’t get DH12 via trade, can’t keep Deron without another “gun” to run with and their going to be changing locations/trying to acquire a new fan base…

  • Clydesays

I like Joe’s game, but his passion for the game seems to come and go. And 89 mil? Are they still trying for Deron & Dwight? It’ll be those three and a very weak bench…

  • http://www.forbes.com/teams/miami-heat/ nbk

    Trilla it approximately, yea

  • Trilla

Then that trade including Horford that I mentioned would make most sense. Howard’s from ATL so he most likely would resign, plus hes going to be paired up with Josh Smith which would make a scary ass front court. Orlando on the other hand can rebuild with a bunch of picks, a young Horford, expiring contracts, and Teague if hes included in the trade.

  • Trilla

Or they can wait till 2013 to get Howard and Chris Paul. If not Paul then they could pursue Monta Ellis. Dwight Howard and Josh Smith with any of those two guards would definitely make them an elite team in the East.

  • http://www.rich-imaging.com Dutch Rich

So this morning we woke up to the possibility of a Dwight trade to the Nets. Then Magic brass said they don’t want to tango with Brooklyn. So the Nets decide to get them a valuable asset. To keep Deron everyone assumes. But Deron wants Dwight. Is there something in the CBA that prevents the Nets from trading JJ along with Lopez for Dwight? Or Crash and Lopez?

  • sid

@trilla “anonymous” already suggested such a trade at 6:17pm w/o harris but I would def include horford, teague, harris and maybe the 1st rounder they just received. it would probably have to be a 3-teamer since orl wouldnt want both pgs teague and harris. maybe bk as the 3rd team? the nets get teague or harris. atl get dwight (orl) and humphries (bk). deron, j smith, humphries, dwight and a 2nd guard starting yet to be announced would be an interesting starting 5.

  • sid

@dutch I believe deron wants to play with dwight too but I get the feeling that orl will send dwight anywhere except for bk so king pulled the trigger on JJ thereby taking bk out of the running for dwight. I dont see how dwight can wind up in bk at all now and I think orl wants to trade him this offseason/summer so they wont have to go through the same old drama.

  • Groves

Some will say he isn’t THAT guy, some will say he is. but the guy is a go-to scorer, a guy that can get his own shot. He should thrive assuming that Deron Williams comes back because the defenses can’t load up and deron will get him some extra easy points

  • Freak

Wonder how angry the nets would be if deron signs with Atlanta now and teams with Dwight and smooth there Haha that would be a sick squad!

  • http://Wikipedia.org Grove Street

I think the hawks did a wonderful job of getting ready for a quick and promising rebuilding process.

    Analytically…

Are the NETS really capable of matching up with the HEAT?

    Deron Williams >>>> Mario
Joe Johnson – Dwade (It’s hard to say based on Wade’s health recovery and if JJ thrives off Deron)

Lebron >>>>>>>> G Wallace (Although Gerald does have potential to provide some good D on lebron)

Chris Bosh > Kris Humprhies (But I really feel that now that Humphries will have a chance to focus solely on rebounding and defense so he could bully Bosh)

Brook Lopez (healthy) >>>> Whoever Heat put at Center (Unless Eddy Curry, Pittman, Joel, Udonis Significantly improve)

It’s really hard to say if Nets win the East. It’s contingent upon how the NETS gel and impact DWILL has. Plus if G. Green and Marshon provide great bench relief then NETS might have a chance of winning the East.

I still give advantage to the HEAT only because Lebron is healthy and playing aggressive he makes everyone play a lot better around him.

Unforutnatley, the Bulls are losing that depth with Omer Asik apparent departure.

But Celts are making some big time moves. If everyone is healthy on the Celtics…. It might be next a celtics thunder finals.

According to Forbes the Trailblazers Paul Allen has about 1 billion $ more than Prokorov

  • http://www.slamonline.com Dagger

NBK: Paul Allen is richer than Prokhorov (13 billion to 14 billion). I’m just trying to imagine the Hawks with Dwight, Hortford and Smith. Now that’s a core that could win the east.

Click my name, Deron Williams is going to the Nets. Congrats, not a bad team.

  • http://www.forbes.com/teams/miami-heat/ nbk

Conflicting stuff when you google net worth. You google them Porkhorov goes anywhere from 13-18 billion. Either way, he willing to spend spend spend just as much as anyone.

The Nets will actually have a decent core with Lopez Johnson and Deron. The thing is, Deron’s temper may not sit well with JJ.

  • Rainman

Give new atlanta hawk gm some credit tho, he got rid of 2 horrivle contracts within days of taking over. (Marviin and joe) as a result, a team that was going nowhere, can probably rebuild, and continue to keep josh smiths services cuz he’d have to be” the man” and i think he’d like that, and as a result settle down on his wishes to move.

  • LaKid

Still hearing a lot about Dwight to Nets.. BK would give Lopez, MarShon, Wallace and some picks and it would be a massive sign and trade.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/officerbarbrady what

Two great trades for the Hawks. Time to rebuild and become a player in free agency when Dwight and CP3′s contracts expire.

i think joe johnson will flourish or at least play his role. He was the hawks point guard and primary scorer… Hopefully deron can get him to stop shootin so many fadeaways

  • Heals

    Good back-up Redd…

  • Trilla

Brook Lopez, Gerald Wallace, Marshon Brooks, and some picks for Dwight Howard is a great trade. The Nets of course get Dwight Howard but the Magic in return get Lopez and Brooks to build around and also a veteran in Gerald Wallace, not to mention the picks. I don’t see how the Magic could get a better trade.

  • sid

@trilla I dont know if billy king still thinks he has a real shot of landing dwight but thats a decent trade that should be considered by both parties. if bk could get dwight via trade, resign deron and convince JJ to take a pay cut that would clear up much needed cap space so they can sign a 2nd starting guard and add a few more pieces to the bench they would already be serious contenders in 2012-13.
