Atlanta Hawks to Sign Lou Williams

Terms of the deal are not yet known, but the Atlanta Hawks have agreed to a multi-year contract with free agent guard Lou Williams. Via SI.com: “Williams took to Twitter on July 6 to let his fans know that he would not be returning to the Philadelphia 76ers, the team that drafted him 45th in the second round of the 2005 NBA Draft. Considered to be one of the steals from that draft, Williams spent his entire NBA career up until now in Philadelphia. He was widely considered to be one of the top candidates for the NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award last year, which ended up being given to James Harden of the Oklahoma City Thunder. In 64 games off the bench last season, Williams averaged 14.9 points and 3.5 assists in 26 minutes per game. He made $5.3 million with the Sixers last season.”

I would think (from a defensive standpoint) he and Teague are a liability.

  • thor

    ^Teague isn’t a bad defender

    Welcome Home!

  • Marcel

He was a steal in the 2005 draft, everyone was wonderin y he didn’t jus go to Georgia but It all worked out, him and monta Ellis were the steals in that draft

  • Ldub

Not sure why he would go to ATL over some other teams. Maybe with JJ gone, he feels he will get more PT than he did in PHI? With the East ramping up to be a shootout between Bos, Mia, Chi, NY and BKN….I really dont understand this move by Williams. *shrug*

Coming from a Sixers’ fan, Lou Williams was held back something fierce in Philly, relegated to cleanuing up after thge “backcourt of the future” farce of Jrue Holiday and Evan Turner…Lou runs the high post pick and roll great (and will flourish with an athletic big who can “roll”), draws fouls with the elite in the league, manages possessions and shot clock to properly close out quarters, and yes…he can score….Despite the physical limitations defensively, he DID improve these last 2 seasons deflecting balls in the passing lanes and communicating and helping out in Philly’s strong team defense (4rth in NBA in both points alloweed and FG %, despite no shotblocking prowess)…Lou did indeed average MORE assists, steals, rebounds, and blocks per minute than Jrue Holiday…and also averaged more steals, assists, and blocks per minute over Evan Turner…Lou led the Sixers in scoring (14.9),despite playing just 70% of the minutes of either Jrue Holiday or Andre Iguodala….Atlanta, you know what you’re getting, I’m sure…but he’s even better..The kid took less money to go home, cause he KNOWS if he gets the chance HE WILL breakout…Lou did not even get to start one half last year, and smart Sixer fans know a demise is coming for 2012.
