Carmelo Anthony Says Jeremy Lin’s Contract is ‘Ridiculous’

We don’t officially know whether or not the Knicks will match the Rockets’ offer sheet for Jeremy Lin—though it certainly looks it won’t be happening—but we do now know what New York superstar Carmelo Anthony thinks of the contract, via Newsday‘s Rod Boone:

The Knicks have until Tuesday to match Houston’s offer before Lin becomes a Rocket.

The Rockets and the knicks did the right thing with Lin. For all of you talking about marketing dollars, do you really think you’ve got a better idea of Lin’s impact on the Knicks’ bottom line than their accountants do? Don’t you think they know the cost vs profit off of Lin better than yall? If they let him go it’s because he simply isn’t worth the money.

  • http://www.nba.com/knicks danfields

i know thats just business but that was a dirty move by houston and also a lil greedy by lin (what is there that he wouldntve been able to get in life with a 5, 5, 9 mio contract?). why didnt houston go for felton in the first place? wouldve gotten them a decent pg at a fair payroll. now they (might) get an overpaid but over average player and messed it all up for ny in regards of letting them continue their cindarella story. i jus hope tht the knicks whoop the rockets a***ses big time next season n that the rockets wont make the playoffs for many years to come.

  • IndyB

It’s never greedy to take money offered from billionaires. Lin didn’t steal from anyone.

  • http://www.nba.com/knicks danfields

and whats wrong with all the reta rds in here frontin on melo? he just said what anyone with a little sense of basketball and realistic view on money thinks. that contract IS ridiculous by any means

  • chillout

I hope scola goes to a contender, or at least a team that gets national TV coverage lol.

  • http://www.nba.com/knicks danfields

@IndyB: look at the relation and the situation. lin couldve been part of smth special in ny and being part of a team comming together having high hopes. plus there hasnt been any beef among players on this roster. as a knick fan i must say that i was suprised how many of these as selfish labeled players pulled themselves together all year long (except the dantoni story but i think i speak for any other die hard knicks fan that we are glad to have a defensive coach now, dantoni never was a fit for ny so thank you melo!). in other words, that last season in ny was special, all these ups and downs. and we (knicks) wouldve all loved to see where the journey of this pack would go. instead its just f**cked up, because if lin would be kept, either stat, the guy who brought ny back to life, or chandler, the heart and soul of the revamped knick defense, would have to be traded next season so that the franchise wont go bankrupt under the new cba.

From the beginning its too much for a backup one hand bandit who cannot handle on ball pressure well. Felton is a better point guard than him and if Houston wants to pay Lin that overpriced money then they are dumb. They let Lowry go for nothing, but want to bring Lin in when they have Gragic who also a way better player than Lin. Lin could start for the Bobcats. Thanks Melo, I have been saying this for a while.

  • Ill Smith

For all of y’all dubbing Melo a ‘hater’ he even stated before Houston revised the deal he was ready for Lin to come back. & from what Lin has said HIMSELF he & Carmelo have a good relationship. That said, he ain’t lying. That contract is fu*king ridiculous. NYK would’ve been in the luxury tax penalty based on the 1st contract but to turn around & restructure it after the fact was corny on Houston’s part. Now they’ll be stuck w/ him & that wack ass Asik deal. Sucks for Houston fans, thought you’d be bringing in Dwight now ya stuck with the dynamic Asik/Lin duo. You made it happen Morey!

  • RunNGun

I don’t see why people get so hung up about any player taking millions. If someone threw $25M over a period of three years at you versus what you’re making now and would ever make in your lifetime, would you not take the $25M? It’s not about greed; it’s about opportunity. Let the Dolans and Alexanders of the NBA take that risk; be glad it’s not your money.

  • http://www.nba.com/knicks danfields

he couldve also just taken the 19/20 mio to raise his teams chances n stay with the group that made him big

  • http://www.slamonline.com Dagger

I really do think that the hype around this kid and the attention he received from casual fans during Linsanity created a backlash among more hardcore basketball fans. Per-36 min stats should always be taken with a grain of salt, but this kid was hitting 19/8 per-36 as a rookie, despite all the changes and upheaval surrounding his team. By comparison: Irving was at 22/6. Lin was top-3 in the entire league at generating free throws from iso situations. Oh, and when Melo and Amare with both out the Knicks were stomping teams with Lin at the helm. You can say all you want about them beating weak teams that didn’t have a chance to scout Lin: the Knicks shouldn’t have won anything at all during that stretch, and Lin was tossing up game-winners. The business of the game is one thing, but even just from a basketball standpoint Lin is worthy of a pretty big contract. Sure, the sample size was low last year, but this kid has real potential, and lots of players have received far bigger contracts while showing far less potential.

  • OTB

You guys are missing the point. It’s not that Carmelo isn’t accurate with his assessment – he is. Offering a guy who had about 15 good games (with excessive turnovers when teams started to actually study game film) 15 million by the 3rd year of his contract is pretty ridiculous. However, Carmelo, who already has an image as being bratty, spoiled, and generally a selfish moron, isn’t helping his case by looking down on someone else’s contract when he’s made it out of the first round exactly once despite being paid an enormous amount of money. Oh, and he forced a trade, gutted a team, and still ended up being a first round loser. If the Knicks match Lin’s contract, Melo has to be the guy’s teammate next year. It was a stupid thing to say on his part…keep these types of thoughts private, especially when you’re the franchise player.

  • OTB

Also, what Dagger said. The guy dropped 38 on the Lakers – he has my respect. Massive amount of potential in him, if he learns how to limit turnovers.

  • OTB

Its also hilarious that Melo is criticizing the contract of others’ when he gets paid 18 million a year and about the only thing he can guarantee is a first round exit.

  • ReHeat

Cosign Dagger. Lin can ball, it wasnt just the system, and @danfields he doesnt owe anything to his old knicks for ‘making him big’. Lin for 25 mil is peanuts. Who are you to critizice him for taking more money? The fact that you even do is crazy.

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

I’d put Lin near the middle of the road regarding starting point guards in the L.
    1. Paul
    2. Rose
    3. Deron
    4. Parker
    5. Rondo
    6. Westbrook
    7. Holiday
    8. Nash
    9. Curry
    10. Rubio
    11. Wall
    12. Lowry
    13. Irving
    14. Dragic
    15. Lawson
    16. Conley
    17. Jennings
Then you -might- be able to put Lin here. Maybe. On a good day. And a good team. That said, kid could be a marketing machine, so it’s impossible to judge the appropriateness of his contract right now.

  • IndyB

Dansfield you are a fan who needs a grip on reality. When was the last time someone asked you to take less money from your job? Do you really think your approval as a fan is worth turning down millions in financial security? You sit behind you little computer or smart phone or television watching games, and call someone greedy for making a decision that will better his life. Greed is the billionaire owners making hundreds of millions off of the images of people they don’t want to pay fair market value. Basketball is just a damn game. No one in their right mind should turn down any amount of money so some delusional ingrate fan can be happy his favorite team is deeper. This is his life. It’s entertainment for you.

  • http://slam flight9

Shut up melo. Everybody knew you hate Lin. So, Knicks will probably sucks with you taking 25 shots and averaging 28ppg…. Amare will hate it and punch you or the fire extinguisher again……..

  • http://slamonline.com Datkid

cosign caboose’s list… I’d put wall higher and switch lawson and irving but otherwise he’s right. Jeremy Lin isn’t a BAD pg.. he’s just not good or very good. and that contract, esp. for a guy who’s only decent is ridiculous. now from a marketing standpoint this is fine…but otherwise…

  • http://www.thesmashbrothas.com zen garden

the knicks will suck regardless who run the point

  • Nick

I would guess that Carmelo is criticizing the structure of the contract(highly abnormal/weird in that it’s stacked toward the third year for the explicit purpose of blowing up the Knicks finances under the new CBA) and not the amount(not at all unreasonable for a team with no pg and a dire need for marketable players)…so it might be a misunderstanding/ lack of context.

If he is actually saying a former teammate’s contract is too much money…well…that would be pretty assholish. I think he’s more likely referring to Morey’s 15M poison pill though. Either way he should probably not be talking about it.

  • http://whut Ugh

Surprised how many people are defending Lin by trashing Melo. The contract is ridiculous.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

We can’t judge how good Lin can or will be with the number of games he’s played in so far, but co-sign IndyB. Compared to other players though, his contract is a bit steep… Daryl Dork Elvis is a massive troll.

  • ChipS

I don’t think he’s hating on Lin, I think it’s aimed toward the Rockets. The contract is ridiculous and I guess the truth hurts to some people. Many people around the league feel like Lin could’ve played at 85% in the playoffs, and pointed out that Wade and Stoudemire both played thru injuries as well as other players, but Lin sort of protected himself and that turned people off. Don’t know how i feel about that, but some writers openly admitted that if it was Melo who did it they would be all over him. Sh!t is just one big headache really. It’s funny when people want athletes say how they’re really feeling and when they do, they get offended although I don’t think Melo was taking shots at Lin here.

  • JoeMaMa

This is a business. While the contract is heavily back loaded, the Knicks can afford to take a couple of years at $5 million while selling more jerseys than Kobe or Lebron. He won’t be worth the $15 million in his third year, but if he keeps progressing upon his existing body of work, he’d fetch 10-12, easy. So really, they’re slightly overpaying him for a third year of service. Everyone has forgotten that this kid put up BIG numbers, and he was still learning the finer points of running a team. The PG position is the toughest in the league, and he excelled when given his chance (Tyson should be pissed; Amare too). He’s young, smart, and dedicated, and he’s only going to get better – this much is true. Young players, when they work hard and get a chance, get better through experience and repetition. Ray Felton is…such a poor choice. He had a very good season in NY, playing for a coach that let him free. But that time is over. Woodson’s system is NOT D’Antoni’s system – it’s a half court grind. That reminds me of Nate McMillan’s system…you know, the one where Felton’s weaknesses were exposed. I mean, for all the talk of the Knicks big money, they’re going to let Lin walk? A young, exciting, improving, marketable, high character guy? This will hurt the Knicks. They need to come to their senses.

  • http://www.nba.com/knicks danfields

@IndyB: come on, its not about 30k / yr job. that kid got offered 20mio bucks (thats more than 20 times the amount 90% of the world population and their families will ever make in their lifetimes, hard working people included) and “his camp wasnt happy about it”. wtf. this is not the “humble” guy the media tried to sell us. i just take tht thing like melo does n i think that he knows a bit more about bball and the nba business than you or i or anybody else in here does.

  • http://www.nba.com/knicks danfields

n btw – i aint a lin hater. i just dont have to like anything smbdy does n in this case im jus shaking my head about him. if he stays fine, if he goes to houston now, wish him all the best

  • 21

    Skill-wise? Absurd is an understatement.
Business-wise? Kid can sell tickets, apparel and just about anything with his name on it.

  • B.Plump

10 millions for the two first years it’s a great deal for a guy that energized all the city (and the country), put excellent numbers (5 first games in a row, going for the incredible averages of 27 ppg, 8 apg, and 2.0 spg, all while shooting a stellar 52% from the field and using his innate aggression to get to the free throw line 8.4 times a night and… yes, a lot of turnovers), a guy we know is gonna work as hard as everybody and with his huge impact in the sales, merchandising and all this stuff that makes his contract ridiculous and cover. It’s simple. You take the guy two years, and the third, as expiring contract easy to move, you can trade him elsewhere if he result a bust. He deserves this opportunity.

  • Drig

Seriously? Guys saying Lin deserves that kind of money???

  • Lin

Knicks should match Lin’s contract and then trade Melo away.

  • RunNGun

@danfields You have been misinformed. Lin is more than happy to return; he was upset that Grunwald didn’t come calling first with a new contract. And one more thing about the $15M on the third year of his contract… it’s all a business. GMs/franchises play a game of chess with each other seeking to take the opportunity to put their team ahead of the rest. If the Knicks match, well, they still get a solid player but cap space goes kaboom in the third year of the contract. If they don’t match, the Rockets get a solid back court starter with Dragic and Lowry gone.

  • Allenp

    $30 million is a lot.

  • http://www.newyorkshockexchange.com Shock Exchange

I literally thought this was a joke when I first read it. I would love to have seen the looks on Houston’s GM’s face when the Knicks balked on matching that contract. “They did what?”

  • pposse

haha yes! i cannot wait for j linn to be the starting pg for the west in the all star game, on another note, carmello’s tweet just proves that NOBODY in the knicks organization is smart. Even when they make the smart move on moving Lin there is someone in that organization that has to open their mouth and have people talk negatively about them…a true disorganized franchise.

  • bigdoggchad

@ OTB What point guard didn’t drop 30 on the Lakers last year? Melo isn’t talking bad about Lin think it’s more of a shot @ Houston. Like Lin but not @ that price.

  • startown

Contract will be up for grabs in two or three years, he is a back-up

  • Hue-walex

If let Lin go and hoping Kidd
can help Melo and the team. I dont
think the adjustment can help team
as much as Lin did. Lin start new
era of PG. To defence a team with
such a PG is a headade of many coach.
And Knicks should have Lin in order
play the speed part of the game.
And it wont easy to find a talent PG
to maximize the score and driving
whole team spirit in the court.
It is petty much 15m in 3rd year to
play Lin. But i am afraid if lost Lin,
those millions already spent on the
high salary players became a waste.
    Just remember how Knicks before
Feb and imagine if that time Kidd
join and help the team what do yo
think it can be better than with Lin?
    How comes it is ridiculous.
But Lin should listen Kidds given
    comment .

  • JoeMaMa

He’s worth the money, easily. The NBA is a business, and whoever gets him sees higher ratings, more ticket sales, more merchandise sold. The Rockets had Yao – they know what an international sensation can do, money-wise. The $15 million is silly. He’s not a $15 million player; his skills aren’t there. But the sooner the basketball fans realize that this is a marketing thing, the less incredulous they’ll be.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

@ Caboose: You’ve severely overrated Steph Curry, Ricky Rubio and Jrue Holiday. The latter two are not better players than Kyle Lowry and I doubt they’ll be better than Goran Dragic next season. Dragic put up 18 and 8 as a starter on 50+% shooting. What has Rubio done at ALL to warrant consideration as a top 10 point guard in the league?

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Yeah… 10 and 8 on 35.7% shooting from the field with 3.2 turnovers a game as a rookie. With all due respect Caboose–what the hell?!
This is Lin’s stat-line even with 10 games included as a bench warmer: 14.6 and 6.2 on 44.6% shooting with 3.6 turnovers a game, a playoff berth, and a better record. Forget Lowry and Dragic and Wall and Lawson and Irving(and basically everyone on that list past 10) and all the other point guards who are *clearly* better than Rubio. He hasn’t even proven convincingly that he’s a better player than Lin.
It’s interesting that so many people are willing to peg Lin as a back-up PG after 25 great starts (not you specifically), but have Rubio being this good after 1 season. Your assessment of Lin thus far is fair, but just ridiculous for Rubio. You’re not the only one.

  • startown

Kyle Lowry and Goran Dragic are better than Rubio (extremely hard laugh)
Did you see Rubio play? If MN offered Rubio as a trade he would demand 3 times what those two guys would command, and they would get it.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

he’s considerably better than Lin. Rubio is one of the best defensive PG’s in the league. Lin is one of the worst. That’s the glaring difference.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Should say *was* – that ACL tear might be the bane of his career.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

nbk: Depends on how many we’re willing to include as being “one of the best.” Lin is a much better scorer and doesn’t shoot 35.7% from the field. 35.7%! I understand rookie guards aren’t always the most accurate from the field but that is really Bob Cousy-esque, and not in a good way. And I don’t care what you say, he is not the tenth best point guard in the league with that rookie year (promising though it was) and that injury (really hope he makes a full recovery).
@ startown: Did you see Lowry and Dragic play? Lowry had an unarguably better year than Rubio and played at a borderline All-Star level. He is also a better defender, rebounder, and scorer. And again, Dragic averaged 18 and 8 in his 26 starts.

  • Bob McBob

Melo is right, the contract is ridiculous and the Knicks can’t afford any more bad contracts. Melo and Amare are already overpaid.

As for Lin, he punked out in the playoffs last year, while Ray Allen, Paul Pierce, Dwayne Wade(the list goes on) all played with injuries. He wanted to protect himself and potential lucrative offers after the season. He got it. Good for him.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

I never said he was a tip 10 PG. I said he’s considerably better than Lin. Because he is. His shooting % is almost a non-factor when you consider what he does for the whole teams offense.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

I disagree. Did Lin not do things for the whole team’s offense? As a starter Lin averaged more assists than Rubio. Rubio has great court vision but Lin was carrying Steve Novak and Jared Jeffries and winning; Rubio at least had Kevin Love.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Lin’s assist to turnover ratio (1.7) ranked 40th in the NBA as a starter. It’s not like he was a better passer than Rubio, he just had the ball a lot more/. And the whole defensive aspect can’t be ignored. Lin is so utterly terrible defensively. Like worse than Steve Nash terrible. He gave up 38 to Deron Williams in NY, and what 18-17-20 to Rajon Rondo. And against elite defenses or defensive players he looked ok at best. You can judge how good Lin is after his 25 games as a starter in Mike D’Antoni’s offense all you want. But that also means you are ignoring the rest of his career, his 15 points and 6 assists a game on 41% shooting with Carmelo Anthony. There is just no way to say Lin is better than Rubio with a foggy 25 game stretch as your evidence. Especially if you are ignoring defense and turnovers. Oh and the lack of being scouted and game planned for. We saw what happened when a team game planned for him.
