Chris Paul Believes 2012 Olympic Team Better Than 2008 Version

Unlike the endlessly defiant Kobe Bryant, Chris Paul wisely side-stepped the unwinnable 2012 vs 1992 argument, and instead focused on the difference between the current Olympic squad and the so-called “Redeem Team” from 2008. From ESPN Radio (via SRI): “How excited he is to play in the Olympics again: ‘Words can’t describe it. It’s funny because during the season when people think about USA Basketball or playing over the summer, over the course of the season guys are going to be like ‘man I’m a little tired or whatnot’ but as soon as we get out here we’re so excited, we’re so excited and can’t wait for the opportunity to represent our country again.’ Whether he thinks the 2012 Olympic Team could beat the ’92 Dream Team: ‘Obviously I’m a little biased because I’m on the team. The ’92 Dream Team was pretty remarkable and unbelievable and I think this year has the opportunity to be special. Everyone tries to compare us to ’08 but there’s no question that I think this year’s team can be better than ’08 because all of us are so much better players than we were four years ago.’”

Anthony Davis Believes 2012 Olympic Team Better Than 2012 Version Without Him.

  • Oh Nose

I would say yes only if Rose, Wade and Howard were on the the ’12 roster.

  • markorsomething

That’s a nice, safe statement. Kudos CP. Not sure if it’s correct though.

Player on 2008 team that aren’t on 2012: Dwight Howard, Chris Bosh, Carlos Boozer(before his injury that made him almost completely useless for the Bulls), Dwyane Wade, a slightly young Jason Kidd, Tasyshaun Prince, Michael Redd, AND AND AND a burning passion to redeem themselves after only winning Bronze in 2004.

Players on the 2012 team that weren’t on the 2008: James Harden, Russell Westbrook, Kevin Durant, Kevin Love, Anthony Davis, Andre Igoudala, Tyson Chandler, AND AND AND Kobe Bryant’s goatee. 4 years of experience does make a difference for some of the guys on the 2008 team, but probably not too much.

Tough. I might have to say 2008, mostly because of that redemption thing and the fact that they got Dwight Howard and few other more seasoned big men on the team. 2012 really just has Anthony Davis, Kevin Love(Best PF in the game), and Tyson Chandler.

so are we going to have one of these each day as until thay have asked everyone on the team?

  • The Mauve Avenger

I’d say Durant makes the 2012 team better.

  • Bt

I agree with mark – the redeem factor can’t be underestimated (see eg 96 bulls). Also 08 had a clear closer/alpha dogg (Kobe), 2012 who get the ball in a close game in the closing minutes? You know Kobe wants it, everyone thinks lebron should get it, Durant is capable, melo won’t hesitate to take it. I say 08 and I don’t think it’s really that close

  • http://www.soundcloud.com/tray-5 T-Ray

Only Kobe,KD,Bron,Melo and CP3 could make the team

  • LA Huey

Which was worse? The ’98 team or the ’02 team?

  • http://slamonline.com Datkid

I’m actually not sure about this either. kobe’s gotten worse than he was in 08..and cp3 and D.wade have been hobbled by injury. in 08 they had more skilled bigs, AND a young jason kidd. while the youth on the 2012 olympic team’s wings is nice, they’re’s not that much of a drop off in overall athleticism between 2012 and 08. I guess 2012 has more shooters which could present some interesting matchup problems, but 08 has the overall advantage positionally.

    1998 was wack.

  • http://slamonline.com LLC#12

1998 team was bad but at least they got a medal, more than ’02 can say.

  • pposse

FALL BACK cp, d rose who was better than you in the summer of 08 than you are now and he is not on this team so in no way is the 08 team worse than this one…you just sour cause you know who will be running the show from here on out..feb 2013 is coming the league better take notice

  • http://YouTube.com/watch?v=wbxrapo0itg SirGrey

If Rose loses his explosiveness, no way in hell he’s equal to CP let alone better. Athleticism and explosiveness were the only two advantages he had over CP. His ability to score depended on his ability to thrash into the lane. If that goes Rose is a good pg, not a great one.

I love how kobe had one good game in the final game and he is now all of a sudden considered the “closer/alpha dog” of that 08 squad. The man is an all-time great but y’all have to stop overrating his play in the clutch. You would think he was JWest or MJ the way people talking about his clutchness.

  • pposse

heard it all befoooooore…prior to the acl tear d rose was in a class of his own, the only players that i will entertain via debate as better then him is LBJ and KD, I wouldn’t mind if somoeone brought up Kobe but at this point in his career i think that would be silly. Did anyone remember that floater over the lakers on christmas day, haha that was the best christmas present ever!

  • pposse

the best was when they showed that shot Kobe hit against the Suns in Game 4 in the first round i believe in 08. I always thought it was funny how they would cut playoff promos and show that play, it was funny cause the lakers lost 3 straight games after that!

  • http://YouTube.com/watch?v=wbxrapo0itg SirGrey

Name one thing he does better than CP, and no you cannot talk to me about driving or quickness or anything else that will likely be decreased due to injury when he comes back. Even before then, Russy was just as athletic and explosive. Rose was just a better pg than him. And there has never been a debate about Lebron or KD being better because they simply are and always were. By miles. Always will be. I’d still take Kobe now over Rose. Wade too. Dwight as well.

  • pposse

first of all he wins more than CP, secondly he plays better team defense than CP, thirdly he is too big too fast too strong for CP individually and for any other pg in the league (for that matter including westbrook who by the way is the beneficiary of practicing in the summer with D Rose), he plays more of a team game, he has better all around stats in the final minutes of games, and he probably shoots better from the 3pt line than CP (not so sure about the shooting). Kevin Durant stated that his favorite player outside of his own team is Derrick Rose. Even tho ‘favorite’ does not equate to ‘best’ or ‘top’ who would say someone is their favorite but another player is better? Im going to assume that KD’s favorite baller is also the guy he thinks is the best too (outside of himself ofcourse). KD got exposed big time on defense during the finals, if you want to go ahead and say a one way ball player is the best or second best in the world then go ahead. Whats the Thunders winning percentage against the bulls when d rose plays again? And out of all those players you mentioned, whose team won more games?? you mean to tell me that if you put Kobe on the chicago bulls that he will be winning more than 61+ games? How about we put d rose on the lakers with drew and pau gasol, artest, and whoever else u dont think that team will win 60+??

  • pposse

I am guessing that out of the last three years, only Lebron might have a higher winning % in the regular season than d rose.

  • pposse

and obviously he can score better

  • pposse

dog say what you want about cp3, he NEVER beat derrick rose on the court. He lost 4 straight times, and Derrick Rose has winning percentages against ALL other pg’s in the game right now..for that reason alone he should be considered the best pg in the game. On top of his winning percentage against the likes of tony parker, russell westbrook, cp etc. his numbers elevates when he plays these guys.

Gotta agree with Sirgrey. The Bulls had a better regular season than the Heat the past two seasons. Look how that turned out. The Hornets team that Paul almost beat the Lakers in the playoffs with is nowhere near as talented as the Bulls. The Bulls in general are just a better team than the Clippers and Hornets, so you can’t give all the credit to Rose. The Bulls were good without him. Without Paul, those teams were trash. Chris Paul is a better shooter, defender, passer, and floor general. Durant and Lebron are in a class of their own. Those two have the potential to be top ten all time. Rose, not so much. Rose is not even remotely comparable to Lebron. Idk why yall two brought him up. Good pg’s are a dime a dozen in today’s league. Rose’s scoring is based on driving to the hole mainly, which he can’t do successfully without his explosive first step. His shooting is improving but it’s not on Paul’s level. Check the stats. I did and Paul is significantly better. Rose and Westbrook are equal in terms of scoring. Pg-wise, Rose has Russy by miles. Russ isn’t a pg. In terms of pg, it’s a preference thing but I’d take Paul/Deron over Rose/Westbrook. I’m excited to see how Rose adjusts his game. He’s talented enough to still do well without relying on reckless driving.

  • pposse

    Smh..y’all just don’t get it!

  • Drig

2008 would’ve been better at the PG, SG, C spots…….The only real improvement would be at the SF spot and if you wanna push it, the PF spot but even that’s debatable……
