Deron Williams and Dwight Howard Have Discussed Teaming Up ‘for Years’

by Marcel Mutoni @marcel_mutoni

“Brooklyn is going to be huge.” - Deron Williams.

After agreeing to re-sign with the Nets — spurred in large part by the team’s trade for Joe Johnson — DWill now considers Brooklyn one of the NBA’s rare destination cities for superstar players. One guy that Williams doesn’t have to convince too much of this, is Dwight Howard.

On Monday, Deron admitted to reporters covering Team USA practices in Las Vegas that conversations about the possibility of playing together have been taking place between himself and Howard for years.

From the CBS Sports and the NY Post:

“We’ve talked about playing together for years,” Williams said, calling the opportunity to team up “a big part” of why Howard has requested that he be traded to Brooklyn. [...] “I think he likes the market, this market is a lot different than Orlando,” Williams said. “I think [building something new in Brooklyn] definitely intrigues him. It’s going to be huge.”

“I think we’ll be one of the top teams in the East for sure,” Williams said. “It depends on how everybody jells and comes together as a team. Miami took a year losing in the finals and this year came out and were better.” [...] “It would be great,” Williams said. “[Howard is] one of the top five players in the world. There’s nobody like him in the NBA. Andrew Bynum is the closest thing as a low-post presence that likes to play on the block.”

Despite multiple reports that four teams and some 14 players could be involved in a blockbuster trade for Dwight Howard, there is still a long way to go until the big fella lands in Brooklyn, helping form one of the League’s most devastating trios.

For the time being, anyway, all Deron Williams and Dwight Howard can do is talk, dream and hope.

“Hopefully the league can figure out one way where it can go back to the ’80s where you had three or four All-Stars, three or four superstars, three or four Hall of Famers on the same team,” James said. “The league was great. It wasn’t as watered down as it is [now].”

  • D12FSU

Just stop with the Dwight stories. Please. Just report the story when the trade actually happens, but untill then, STOP

  • Magic fan

    “sighs” I Agree

  • triyo

Where is the loyalty in sports? Dwight isnt on the team yet, DWill should be saying “It would be great to play with him, but Brook Lopez is our center and we’re going to compete with him” Thats what I’d want my teammate to say.

  • Andy

So… It’s collusion when the Heat do it and Dan Gilbert hires a detective to try and find evidence of it but when Dwill and Dwight do it, no outcry? Ah double standards. Lol

    Tampering much? LOL

Best homepage photo ever. Kudos, Marcel.

  • jsmallz

If Dwill really wants to play with Dwight why take the max. Yes he is worth that. But come on what the team just gave up to just get johnson. Then to get Dwight. Seems like he could have gone a little lower to make it easier to sign him. the way to look at it is if doesnt work right away then they destroyed the future of the franchise by giving up so many draft picks. Lopez may not be the greatest but come on he will do what is needed. What teams are willing to give up for one guy that has A BACK INJURY.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Players can discuss playing on the same team. Gilbert accused Pat Riley of being involved, which is against the rules of the NBA. Players can collude and tamper, executives and coaches cannot.

  • Andy

@Allenp – Interesting. Wasn’t sure on that but good to hear the clarification. That being said (for what it’s worth) public outcry wasn’t about Pat Riley, but moreso the players talking about it in 08 Olympics and maybe not giving their all (eventhough I believe they did) during their respective seasons.

Public was pissed that there was the suspicion that Heat’s big three spoke. Here is Deron saying that they DID in fact speak. Just think it’s funny that in the media wheelhouse and public perception this isn’t even being mentioned. Double standard that Heat live in.

  • ash

This makes Dwight in my opinion more of an idiot to opt in when there is a big chance of you playing with Deron. Makes no sense

  • http://www.slamonline.com Redd

So Deron just got on my sh*tlist. Very annoying for u to talk like D12 is already on your team, I see that he’s rubbed off on you, pricks.

  • http://www.newyorkshockexchange.com Shock Exchange

On occasion people have tried to catch fade with the Shock Exchange on here. The players are telling us something … the Lakers pining for Howard, Lebron teaming up with Bosh and Wade and now Howard teaming up with Deron. Players and teams would rather go with proven players than to rely on the draft and wait on kids from college to develop – the equivalent of chasing imaginary windmills. Their behavior and the NBA’s talks of raising the entry age to 20, is a defacto cosign for the Shock Exchange.

  • http://slam FLIGHT 9

Hope Dwight goes to Nets rather than LAke Show..

  • LA Huey

I’ve always believed people were prematurely dismissing how big the Nets could be once they were in Brooklyn.

That was a helluva reach Shock Exchange.
Playing two years in college still makes you a kid from the draft. You just have two years to get injured and earn the NCAA billions.
You can do better than that homie. I know, I’ve read your book.

@ Spit…Just in case there was any doubt Bron was a Linkstigator.

Did Shock just talk in 3rd person..huh.

  • http://www.newyorkshockexchange.com Shock Exchange

Allenp you may as well read the book (due out later this month). Ironically, you’re actually in the book. You and a few others tried to catch fade with the Shock Exchange a few years ago on this very issue. I captured excerpts from our conversation in the book. But right when you were about to catch that “fiddy,” one of the SLAM editors intervened. In a few weeks, I’m gon’ drop that “heat, light, and pressure” Hoss.

    shock exchange……..smh

  • patrick

To the 1st comment, lebron’s quote..is that actually historically accurate? I wasn’t old enuf to watch basketball in the 80′s but i don’t there was ever 3-4 all starts on every team, or on most teams. The #’s I just think wouldn’t add up. Simple as that

  • http://www.nba.com/2012/news/features/david_aldridge/07/09/morning-tip-free-agency/index.html Allenp

Shock you are a funny dude.
But, you are very wrong about college basketball, and you still haven’t provided any good points to buttress your opinion. But you are entertaining.

  • http://www.newyorkshockexchange.com Shock Exchange

AllenP, in a few weeks it shall all be revealed. You are welcome in advance. As a heads up, you may want to go out and buy yourself a flame retardant suit.

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/tray24 T-Ray

A lot of teams in the 80s had great starting 5s. Boston,LA,Philly,Detroit,Dallas are a few that come to mind.

  • Goblin

I don’t know why you all keep complaining about Dwight and all the trade rumors and stories. If ya were so disinterested, ya wouldn’t be reading or writing comments. You guys all must all seem to like it cause i see the same people commenting over and over again, so obviously your not tired of it if you keep coming back to read them. Move on and read the other articles and stop b****ing!!!

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

I hope Howard does get shipped to the Nets. Howard wants so badly to start a new legacy of championships in Brooklyn, when he has the opportunity to go to LA and make the Lakers even better than they are. Howard will look back on his career after Joe Johnson chokes in the playoffs, D. Williams becomes injury prone and Howard can’t make free throws down the stretch in big games. He will realize he wanted to be the man so bad he didn’t see the future for his legacy. Howard career is about to be over in Brooklyn like CP3′s career is over. Clippers are going no where with no post Griffin, me first Crawford, Hero three point shooter Billups, I can’t buy a basket Jordan and CP3 is more injury prone than my grandmother. Some players want out of teams so bad, they go to crappy teams that look good on the surface. IF I was the Magic I would not take Brook Lopez back in a trade, unless I recieved Brooks with it. Magic are screwing themselves over. 1st round picks are not what they used to be, Hornets got Davis at number one, who I think will be more Camby like than anything. and Bobcats had to take a player who can’t score but play defense. Cavs were stuck at taking a player who never started. NBA teams depending on the draft process will never make it out of purgatory. BOOK IT!!

    Always entertaining.

haha seed you the man..dwights a little foolish for not going to the lakers or expressing any interest..maybe he doesnt want to go there because he is scared of the bynum comparisons

co-sign seed & pose you mean O’Neal comparisons I think.

we do realize the Thunder and Blazers both used the draft to be relevant, right? And Spurs?

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

Imaginary windmills? A. Don Quixote believed he was chasing after giants. B. He was actually chasing at windmills. So he was either “chasing at windmills” or “chasing imaginary giants.” Way to skew those references.

  • http://slamonline.com JTaylor21

Maybe he doesn’t want to stand around watching Kobe shoot contested perimeter shots all game long.

  • http://www.newyorkshockexchange.com Shock Exchange

Of course the Shock Exchange knew it. I was just testing you guys. Congrats. You passed … You’re on the list.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

No you didn’t. Just like you didn’t know “infinitum” was one word.

  • Conor

Shock Exchange’s Don Quixote reference was impeccable.

  • heyheyhey

the NBA NEEDS this trade to happen. i mean who else is there in the east? miami basically has a ticket to the nba finals every season. Bulls?? nahh derrick rose can’t do it by himself, and they aint even in talks. But the Nets tho, if they land dwight howard, everything will be up for grabs again.

  • http://www.newyorkshockexchange.com Shock Exchange

    AllenP,

As a matter of full disclosure, my background is in economics. The first assumption in economics is “people are rational.” With on Horry, Jr’s public slurping of Howard, Lebron, Wade and Bosh teaming up and and Howard and Deron teaming up, their behavior suggests it is difficult to get immediate help from the NBA draft. Your comments suggest otherwise. This can only mean one of two things – (i) it is indeed difficult to get immediate help from the draft or (ii) Horry, Jr, Lebron, Howard, et al. are acting “irrationally.”

Which one is it AllenP … as the theme from Jeopardy plays ad infinitum?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

smh. i mean, that is just so stupid i hope nobody addresses it. just let this guy say what he needs to say. logic is not involved. intelligence is not involved. this is purely brain diarrhea.

Shock Exchange Posted: Jun.28 at 5:21 pm
Cool. So I assume the convo. on the college debate is now closed … as the theme from Jeopardy plays in finitum. But you’ve still gotten my dander up.

  • http://slamonline.com Datkid

lmaoooo I remember shock saying all of that…”gotten my dander up” has to be top 5 most homosexual things said on this website. not that that’s a bad thing…but i’m just saying.

  • http://www.nba.com/2012/news/features/david_aldridge/07/09/morning-tip-free-agency/index.html Allenp

The first assumption isn’t “People are rational”. The first assumption is “People behave rationally.”
    Difference.
Secondly, you’ve now changed the discussion from the best way to build a great team to the best way to get immediate help.
    Do better.

  • http://www.newyorkshockexchange.com Shock Exchange

You’ve been weighed, measured and you’ve been found wanting.

  • http://www.nba.com/2012/news/features/david_aldridge/07/09/morning-tip-free-agency/index.html Allenp

You know I’m right, which is why you didn’t make a real response.
I don’t need “fiddy” I just dropped a double nickel.

  • Basketball_iQ

the heat dont live in a dbl-standard… Think: how can a franchise attract a player of Lebrons caliber? By having attractive pieces already in place and my homie, who happens to be ChrisBosh says, where ever you going, Im following. PatRiley had nothing to do with LBJ coming over except keeping Wade around. Maybe cleveland shouldve tanked a season or two, sat Bron down during that stretch, got JohnWall and DemarcusCousins and viola, he’s still there. lololololol

  • http://www.newyorkshockexchange.com Shock Exchange

You caught me off guard with that “People behave rationally” gibberish. You guys definitely are on your wikipedia game today. LOL.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

    Allen, that’s what he does.

infinitum is one word. Go to college.
    .
.Shock Exchange Posted: Jun.28 at 5:30 pm
    How many words is “fiddy”?
    .
nbk Posted: Jun.28 at 5:41 pm
    Fiddy is zero words.
    .
But according to the Urban Dictionary (which is certainly what you use) it is “a word used by morons who can’t pronounce, or for that matter spell the word ‘fifty’”
    .
I post this because that is really what the Urban Dictionary Says. And that sh*t is ironic comedy to me. Plus, Shock’s inability to communicate rationally.

  • http://www.slamonline.com AlbertBarr

AllenP and nbk’s comments are the main reason I still come and read SLAM everyday. Thank you sirs for your fine contributions. I suppose you need the Shock exchanges and trolls and other character actors for you to really shine so I’ll give them a little credit for helping to keep it interesting. Caboose is legit as well.
