Deron Williams: Joe Johnson Trade Kept Him With Nets

Deron Williams says he was close to signing with his hometown Mavs but was so impressed by the Nets’ trade for Joe Johnson, he decided to re-sign with Brooklyn. From the NY Post: “Deron Williams said he was a lot closer to becoming a Maverick than anyone thought. And he would have taken Jason Kidd with him. The Nets and Knicks are lucky to have the point guards performing in the five boroughs. Thank you, Joe Johnson. In a startling revelation, Williams said after the U.S. Olympic Team’s first day of training camp the Mavericks were his choice until Nets general manager Billy King pulled off the Joe Johnson heist in the opening days of free agency. ‘I was really close to going to Dallas,’ Williams said Friday in his first remarks since agreeing to terms with Brooklyn on Tuesday. ‘I actually thought that’s where I was going to go. Then I had the meetings [with Dallas and Nets] and changed my mind. After I got out of the meeting with Dallas, saw the team they were going to have and putting out there and we just made the trade for Joe Johnson, I felt that team [the Nets] for a longer time would be the better team.’ ‘I still flip-flopped a couple of times,’ Williams added. So without the Johnson trade, Williams and Kidd likely were headed to Big D and King would have been the Big Dunce of Brooklyn. Instead, he’s looking like a genius, especially if Dwight Howard is added as the Nets’ final piece. ‘Joey, I never played with anyone like him,’ Williams gushed. ‘A guy on the wing that can get his own shot, but also get me involved and is a great defender. We can be one of the top backcourts in the NBA.’”

I try to give Williams the benefit of the doubt.
But I can see why Utah humiliated him the way that they did.
Who does this guy think he is?

even with that $20 mil contract jj is still a #3 while his contract is fit for a #1. his shot selection is atrocious. his lack of energy and ability to motivate his team/teammates in times of adversity is shocking. his offensive production is up and down. hell put up 25 one night and 10 the next whether its the reg seas or post seas. right now hes the #2 for bk. but due to jj`s hefty contract and the fact that at 6’8 he plays the same position as 6’7 gwallace both players are expendable in bk`s continued effort to get dwight. and if Im orl I dont give bk dwight without making them give up jj or crash either to them or another team

I tend to take it personally when someone makes himself bigger than a situation.
Unless it has to do with me, of course… lolol.

Nah. I’m pretty sure the billboard of a birthday card is what kept him with the Nets.

Idk if y’all just don’t remember or what. But as not a teams primary option Johnson is very efficient. Last time he played that roll was in Phoenix in 04-05 and he lead the league in 3pt%. In Atlanta he was the main guy and couldn’t take the team past the second round and it scored him a huge contract. Now he’s back in the role he belongs in.

if they get dwight, it will be hella hard to stop these guys from scoring. inside, outside, post, iso, pick and roll, threes, midrange, they would be able to do it all.

They pretty much got a all-star for a bunch of bench players. Joe Johnson gonna killem and don’t let them get Dwight they gonna go to the finals every year.

  • Clydesays

Eh, Joe Johnson? The same dude who shows up once every 3rd or 4th playoff game? I’ve liked him since his rookie season, but he’s not the guy to put you over the top. If Bklyn gets Dwight they’ll have 3 suspect ‘leaders’. 2 coach killers and a guy who thought he was a franchise player, but isn’t.

Does he realize that the Mavs already had a much better player? Lol.
