Indiana Pacers Traded Darren Collison, Dahntay Jones to Mavericks for Ian Mahinmi

The Pacers made the curious move of shipping guards Darren Collison and Dahntay Jones to Dallas, in exchange for backup center Ian Mahinmi. Per Draft Express and the Indy Star: “Indiana will acquire Ian Mahinmi (4-years, 16 million) in a sign and trade with Dallas. Darren Collison and Danhtay Jones go to Dallas. [...] Mahinmi agreed to a four-year, $16-million deal with the Mavericks prior to the trade to the Pacers. The Pacers likely aren’t finished making moves. Shooting guard Gerald Green, who met with the Pacers last week, is close to agreeing to deal with them to fill the role as the scoring wing player off the bench. The Pacers are also trying to work out a sign-and-trade deal with the Charlotte Bobcats for point guard D.J. Augustin to be George Hill’s backup, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. Mahinmi, who also met with Pacers officials last week, averaged 5.8 points and 4.7 rebounds in 61 games last season for the Mavericks. He’ll play behind Roy Hibbert, who recently agreed to a four-year, $58-million deal with the Pacers. Collison will have a chance to play for former Pacers coach Rick Carlisle and be Dallas’ starting point guard next season. Collison lost his starting job to Hill late last season after injuring his groin. Collison averaged 10.4 points and 4.8 assists last season. Jones, who signed to be the Pacers’ defensive stopper in 2009, never formed an identity during this three seasons with the team.”

this knocks them out of the playoffs?

No way. This is a great trade for both teams. With Dallas getting Kaman last night they had no need for Mahinmi and were still in need of a pg and a backup sg to come off the bench and play d/hit some easy shots ala deshawn stevenson. Check and check. Indiana needed a backup center, and that’s exactly what they got. Once they sign Gerald Green they will have the scoring punch off the bench that they lacked last year. Neither team is good enough to make the finals as is, but it’s definitely a good start.

So Pacers management traded a quality starter point guard who has proven himself in the NBA for a backup center with no promise, but are going after DJ Augustin from the Bobcats. WOW!!!

lol Dj is ok but Daren is only getting better… Maybe they see something i don’t but the mavs got better and ind threw in the towel. Maybe they’ll make the playoffs but its gonna be harder.

The pacers are nuttttss…Darren Collision will be good for the Mavs. Mahimi? really Indiana? i’ve seen him play 2 years, i see no potential.

Bad move for the Pacers…Two good players for a bust. Lowry would be a better fit that DJ.Agustin. Hill can’t be a starter for a contender. Bird come back!!

collison is too up and down to be labeled a starter but he`s a good backup. they still need a starting pg imo. there are a few pgs still available in free agency. they need to sign one of them and then fill the starting 2 position with another free agent signing

Dont you see what is happening…this ends up being Jones and Collison for Mahimi, DJ and Green….sounds like a good deal for the pacers to me

I’m very interested in seeing who the Bobcats get for DJ. Now that Larry Bird isnt running the Paces it appears everything has gone to hell.
