Jerry Colangelo Says DeMarcus Cousins Needs to Grow Up to Make Team USA

DeMarcus Cousins’ dream of making the Olympic team didn’t come true, and USA Basketball head honcho Jerry Colangelo blames some of that on Cousins’ maturity level. From USA Today: “Cousins might have been an Olympian in his own mind at one time. Cousins, a talented player still working on his attitude and demeanor, is not yet close, according to USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo. ‘He needs to mature as a person (and) as a player if he’s going to have an outstanding NBA career,’ Colangelo said. In May, Cousins told the Sacramento Bee: ‘I feel like if I did go play for the Select Team, I probably would get a spot (on the Olympic team). Honestly … but we’ll see.’ That didn’t happen when Colangelo announced the 12-man Olympic roster Saturday. If Cousins doesn’t change, he won’t be on the 2014 world championship team either. ‘Before there’s discussion about him being part of our program, he has a lot of building to do. … He has a lot of growing up to do,’ Colangelo said.”

if he takes this as constructive criticism, it will be all good.
the problem with immature people is they always think that they’re being attacked personally.

    Jerry C be wildin’ . . .

  • http://www.twitter.com/_dfrance dfrance21

What is Colangelo’s comment based off tho? Did he do something during the trials? I feel like he took a step in the right direction this year in terms of his attitude.

  • Patrick

Why do so many people rag on Cousins for being immature? Has the guy done stuff to deserve this?

  • Allenp

Because Kobe, Melo and Westbrook have been models of maturity throughout their careers.

  • 23

Your a fool if your gonna compare cousins to Kobe in any way. Kobe has had off and on the court issues, but he has led his team to 2 nba championships, 3 finals appearances in a row. Kobe is at the EHS of a legendary career, cousins is barely getting his feet wet. There is no comparison.

^Add Wade, CP3 and Lebron too.

cosign allen and simone. plus cousins didn’t even do that much this year. plus by many accounts he was dominating the camps. I think the real issue is that his game doesn’t quite fit the international style of play. He’s terrible at the high pick and roll for example

  • Lan

you need to meet the standards.

  • chris

So 18 and 11 in your second yr in the league sounds pretty decent to me. He has to mature and respect the players by not fouling them? What the hell does this mean- just let the all stars score because of what they have done in the league? When team usa struggles playing spain or any big man over 250 pounds, they might wanna tell jerry colangelo in the next run to use this guy.

  • pposse

cousins shoudl sue colangelo for defamation..show him how mature he can be! wtf for anyone to call a professional immature is kind of a low blow in my book.

  • bbogg

i do hope AD is the alternate casue if TC goes down we are very small.like the team but can love or blake play center for us??

  • don the GSW fan

well for one, cousins fought with one of his teammates last year. i don’t think a short olympic competition can’t afford that in the locker room

  • Travis

The guy is immature. Slamming guys, making threats in the newspapers, his lack of work ethic from Kings management, getting his coach fired at the start of the year. If he doesn’t grow up, he will be a talents player who played on 8 different teams over his career.

  • Allenp

Cousins might be the hardest worker on that team. You try getting shots on a team full of checkers and see how it impacts your mood.

Speaking of immaturity, whatever happened to Patrick Patterson?

  • Mike F

I understand that Cousins has a slight attitude, but Colangelo is going hard, a couple of those players (Bryant, Anthony) have attitudes as well. I don’t see the point for harsh direct comments to the media concerning a player that is still developing. That is something that should be reserved for a personal conversation between both parties, whether it be in person or via phone call.

  • http://www.crappyrappers.com Simon Caine

Seriously. He has Marcus Thornton shooting it every time he gets his mits on the ball and Tyreke euro-stepping into the lane every time he gets it. It’s a free-for-all. They need a coach who will tighten the reins and they have to get rid of ‘Reke or Marcus Thornton.

  • http://www.crappyrappers.com Simon Caine

Marcus Thornton shoots like he has a quota to meet every game, lol.

    Lucky dwight got hurt then……………

Jerry C is a poor judge of character. He was wrong not to let Allen Iverson try out for the 06-08 teams. Nobody played harder in 2004 than Iverson

  • drock

What jerry said is messed up but unfortunantly it’s true…

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

playing hard and winning are different. iverson didnt translate to the international game, no guard without range does.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

    Tony Parker^

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

yes you are right. Parker finishes at the rim a lot better than Iverson (or anyone in the world) and had the ball all-game every game. But you’re right, Parker is the exception.

  • http://foxnews Frank

Jerry and Coach K are right about Cousins growing up but it is a fact that Coach K would never select anyone that played for Kentucky. Team USA is stacked with great players that could win with Barney Fiffe coaching. Coach K and Jerry need to let younger coaches take over team USA.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Iverson wasn’t the problem on that team. It was the Richard Jefferson and Shawn Marions of the world that were the problem. Iverson is a decent enough shooter, or was a decent enough shooter. But that team was really, REALLY light on superstar talent. After Iverson and Duncan the dropoff was crazy as far as talent.

  • pposse

AllenP wasn’t Lebron on that team and dwade??! Lebron was coming off the bench for that team.

  • pposse

Carmello was on that team too, i think

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Iverson wasn’t the problem, but he was hardly a solution. He put up like 13PPG with 2.5APG in 30 minutes. He wasn’t a very effective international player.

  • bike

He’s right. Being overseas, sometimes rough international play, and being surrounded with superstars is no environment for someone like Cousins.

  • pposse

    the problem was Larry Brown

  • http://www.slamonline.com Nick Tha Quick

The best jumpshooter on that Olympic team was RJ. That says a lot. And Bron and Melo were barely good enough to get off the bench.

  • pposse

but d wade started on that team? There was never a point in RJ’s career where he was the better option than Lebron. I thought Larry Brown was heavily critisized for the way he distributed the minutes in that Olympics??

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Bron and Melo got no tick. Wade got some.
Larry Brown refused to play four of his best players because they were rookies and he didn’t think they should be on the team. And the USA paid for it.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Nick Tha Quick

Whatever happened to the Greek bigman, baby Shaq who massacred them on the high pick and roll. Clippers held his rights for a while. He was a Big Baby who didn’t jack jumpers all game long and could finish in traffic with contact. Surprised the Raps didn’t draft him like they do with pretty much any project Euro big.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

He kept getting fatter. And worse.
Also, I think it’s wild that Colangelo made these comments while Cousins was with the Select team and then wouldn’t explain what he meant to Cousins when Cousins asked. I also think this is backlash because of the Westphal situation.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Sofoklis Schortsanitis. He was da sheet.
He was like Tractor Traylor not on a diet.
