John Wall Believes Wizards Have ‘a Great Chance’ to Make the Playoffs

The Washington Wizards in the NBA Playoffs?! Yes, the Playoffs. According to a very optimistic John Wall, anyway. Reports the WaPo: “His first challenge is getting the Wizards back in the postseason after a four-year drought. He also wants to finally make the expected leap that failed to materialize last season. ‘I feel I got better, but I didn’t play as well as I could. I couldn’t get the type of numbers that I thought I could average because I wasn’t doing the type of work that I needed to,’ said Wall, who has career averages of 16.3 points, 8.2 assists and 4.6 rebounds. ‘As a team concept, we didn’t make no playoffs. I knew the first year was going to be tough, but I felt the second year, we had a chance even though it was a shorter season, throughout the lockout. We didn’t play to our full potential and I hope the third and fourth year get better … I know it’s a tough process,’ he said. ‘LeBron [James] didn’t make it his first two and Kevin [Durant] didn’t make it his first couple of years.’ [...] And he believes that the Wizards are on the verge of vying for one of the top eight spots in the Eastern Conference after trading Rashard Lewis to New Orleans for Emeka Okafor and Trevor Ariza, and then drafting Bradley Beal with the third overall pick. ‘We finished the season very strong and then you make those trades in the offseason and drafting the right people, we’re going the right way,’ Wall said. ‘We have a great chance now to make the playoffs, but it’s up to us.’”

When I was 8 years old I thought I had a great chance of dating Lola Falana. There was one slight problem, however – Steve McQueen.

If Wall can get his team involved then yea they could make it. They have a pretty decent squad.

  • RIGGS

they will have a better record than last year, but theyre still far from a playoff berth

  • Bt

Maybe if you learn to pass, shoot, reduce your turnovers and play D John. You don’t make the playoffs when your point guard shoots 7% 3PFG and barely cracks 40% overall with a 2:1 assist/turnover ratio

jayrose – wall is a very good floor general for his age, he’s no ball hog. he just needs to learn to shoot from distance. i like what leonsis is trying to do. he has potentially his backcourt for the next 10 years in wall and beal mixed with an experienced front line in ariza, okafor and nene.

  • Patrick

Where is this notion coming from that Wall can’t or won’t pass?

  • Zabbah

Yeah, and maybe monkeys will fly out of my butt.

You won games late in the season because other teams were resting for playoffs or attempting to tank.
Wizards have an outside shot of making the 8th spot. ATL and ORL both slip significantly. ORL is definitely out. Nets are in though, so we’ll see.

They’ll definitely get more wins than last year. Playoffs, I actually think they will be fighting for the 7th or 8th. We’ll see. And @Zabbah Lol. funny just thinking about it. hahah becareful what you say!

  • jayrose

@TMoney- I’m well aware of johns potential and skills but he finally has a decent squad. He has nene, okafor, ariza, beal. I’m just saying he finally has options. I’m interested on how Wall will do this season with a good crew around to help him.

Wall has been consistently mentioned in the same breath with D. Rose, CP3, Rond, et al., the only problem is that “Wall plays on a bad team …” If you put some good players around him he will have the burden of proving he can actually play – reduce turnovers, improve his shooting, run the club effectively, and produce wins. It’s not subjective – either “that dog hunts” or it doesn’t.

  • kobe

I am curious to see how he will produce next year. Because if he can’t get that jumper right it is going to ba a long season.

  • Omar

The notion that he can’t pass comes from the fact that his team is a mess offensively despite the fact he’s had some good scorers, albeit knuckleheads/one-dimensional players on his team.He should share in the blame for that.

Wall has some good pieces around him now, so its no excuse for him to play street-ball style basketball. Wall has talent, but he does not get the ball to players he needs to during crucial plays in the game. If Wall plays like a true point guard, they have a chance at the playoffs.

I think they are still a year away but the middle pack of the Eastern Conference is watered down, so its possible.

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/tray24 T-Ray

I think Wall’s main problem is tempo. As a PG you have to know when it’s appropriate to push the ball or hold it and run a set. With more talent around him it should be interesting to see how his season plays out.

I think its possible, nene and omeka okafor are very good players especially Nene.

The line up they have now should be able the make the 8 seed. but to say wall doesn’t pass?? gives u 9 a game, to same no defense, 2nd year he top 5 in steal almost 2 agame??? Wall will get it he has too much talent not 2.. Only adjustments need on his game is a more fluid jumper and tempo control(even thou kid the fastest in the league he dosn’t need to 100mph every trip down the court)

  • pposse

well that sucks..i kind of hope the wizards dont make the playoffs, it was fun buying 100 level seats for $10 and heckling the team, well it was fun while it lasted

  • Basketball_iQ

Math class: teams that made the playoffs 6/7/8seeds ,,, now times that by how potentially bad they could be this year bc of player movement=the wizards have a shot to get in
But as someone said above, Wall has to be special for it have a chance.
The shooting and everything will improve but for him, he has to lower the turnovers and heighten the assists. the whole team will suffer.
A steady coach should help too.

They have those beast mode bath salts in DC, I see. Randy Wittman is still the coach right? Okay then.

  • http://www.slamonline.com spit hot fiyah

^yeah they need another coach. but nene and okafor should make a bid difference if they can stay healthy. bradley beal is the x factor for this squad

  • http://www.newyorkshockexchange.com Shock Exchange

John Wall on some other stuff – he’s smokin’ that “Phil Chenier”

  • http://www.nba.com/2012/news/features/david_aldridge/07/09/morning-tip-free-agency/index.html Allenp

I don’t have a problem with their players now that they’ve removed the cancer known as Andray Blatche. But, I don’t trust Randy Wittman as a coach. I see zero success in his past.

    “Imaginary giant” or “chasing windmills”?

  • bike

I miss the old Wizards with Javale. They were always good for at least one boneheaded play a week that made the highlight reel. The league needs teams like that…good, old fashioned, stupid play where winning and losing don’t mean a dam thing.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Cosign bike. The team is legendary.

  • http://www.slamonline.com spit hot fiyah

    don quijote references ftw

  • http://kb24.com x-DrEw_MaiN-x

Bull they should have been good last year idc I’m a Javel McGee fan.. he’s a bit clumsy lol but he still has potential to be a Tyson Chandler in the coming years Nene wont be around that long. Nd who is to say Beal will come in and do better than Nick Young. The wizards need more discipline

  • Valkyrie

So assists no longer count in judging whether or not a guy can pass? Did any of you see that roster the past two seasons? If he can get those type of assist number with those boneheads, I think it’s safe to say the guy can pass. Ya’ll are arrogant about your basketball “knowledge” and don’t even know what you’re talking about.

  • jeremys6226

Gotta love the optimism, way better than having a negative attitude but I don’t think they will make the playoffs but will have way more wins then last year
