JR Smith to Re-Sign With Knicks for $2.8 Million Over 2 Years

Free agent JR Smith and the New York Knickerbockers will re-join forces for two more seasons, during which Smith will earn $2.8 million. From ESPN: “The deal is guaranteed for the first season and contains a player option for the second season. ‘I have decided to re-sign with the Knicks. I just felt that, despite my other options, New York is the best situation for me,’ Smith said in a statement. ‘Coach (Mike) Woodson showed a lot of faith and trust in me last season, as did (Knicks owner) Mr. (James) Dolan and the organization. My teammates are great to play with and New York fans are the best. I can’t wait to get started.’ The 6-foot-6 Smith is expected to start at shooting guard for New York in 2012-2013 after coming off the bench last season. Landry Fields, last season’s starter, has reached a verbal agreement with the Toronto Raptors on a three-year offer sheet for approximately $20 million — a deal the Knicks are not expected to match. An eight-year veteran, Smith averaged 12.5 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game for the Knicks last season. The Knicks will have Smith’s early Bird rights after next season, meaning they can exceed the salary cap to re-sign the shooting guard if he decides to decline the 2013-14 player option.”

    ^compared to Steve Novak?

Kinda crazy to see Danny Green signs for 3 years $12 million, follow by JR Smith signs for 2 years $2.8 million. Does he like NY that much or does no one else in the league want him???

  • http://slamonline.com LLC#12

Wow I hope he doesn’t find out what they’re paying Novak!

  • Fat Lever

Great deal for NY. How many other legit starting 2 guards are available for 2.8m? Not many.

  • jayrose

Wow that’s pretty cheap. NY played that one well

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

    wow, very underpaid.

  • Da-Meat-Hook

    That’s gotta be a typo…

  • http://www.twitter.com/_dfrance dfrance21

Seriously. How could he see what Novak got and accept this deal? His agent should be fired immediately.

  • T-Money

i don’t think there was a market for jr. smith gave you 12 pts on 12 shots last year, shooting 40% from the field. that’s garbage, any wing can do that.

  • http://minusthebars.blogspot.com don

    Extremely underpaid.

    Exodus 23:1

  • Omar

I don’t think anyone who watched him play last year would say he’s underpaid.

  • lisa

Lou Williams should’ve done the same.

  • http://slamonline.com JTaylor21

He’s getting paid what he should. Steve Novak is making out like a bandit, but Smith isn’t underpaid.

  • http://www.fullc0urtpress.com KHOLIDAY05

WOW… soooo Steve Novak is more valuable than J.R. Smith? There must be something in his contract that says since he’s only getting $2.8 mil that he can tweet all he wants or act a fool whenever or something! There has to be something we dont know about!

  • lisa

Steve Novack played better than J.R. Smith, so he gets paid more.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

You think it’s going to weird when Steve Novak gets his paycheck and JR gets his? I do.

  • Otero

Steve Novak didn’t play better he shot better doesn’t defend or rebound and cnt create his own shot I expect JR to act a damn fool for most of the season considering what he’s getting paid if you thought his shot selection was bad before wait till next season

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

JR Smith must be lovin the life he’s livin in NYC

  • R32

That’s it?? JR Smith can go off for 30 any game. He should’ve gotten a deal comparable to Danny Green (4 mil/per)

  • LA Huey

Even if he really likes New York, he couldn’t get a better deal from Brooklyn? I’m shocked but that’s pretty much his value to me.

  • http://www.nba.com Shadojoker

    Shoulda hired Jerry Maguire

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

    Brooklyn has no money

  • Ash

He must not have any other team looking for his services. I bet he has a great upcoming season hence 2nd year is a player option.

  • Kadavour

Attitude determines latitude. Not sure if this is sad or funny. I bet not even this stab to his pockets will humble this kid. he’s such a f*ck up.

  • Jose

Well, i thought the team was only allowed to give him a 20% increase of his last contracts pay, i dont remember all the details of that situation. but they couldn’t offer him more or something of that nature. .

  • Da-Meat-Hook

JR Smith defends, rebounds, slashes, and 360 windmills in traffic during playoff games better than Steve Novak.

  • pposse

    that 360 windmill was ridiculous!

  • pposse

the provision in his contract says that he can wear spongebob socks to the games

  • ChipS

Great value for the Knicks. I thought he could at least get a deal like he had in Denver. I think he loves New York that much. Plus, I heard money is not a problem for him because he and his dad made some good investments. Still, I think his value is much higher than this deal. I mean, he struggled at times last year but he was fresh from China and jumped right into the mix with the Knicks and then had to adjust to a new coach. Not trying to make excuses for him tho as other players had to also. Plus, he became a NY media favorite(if there is a such thing) after that Tahiry pic and being linked to Rihanna and Chanel Iman. Dude loves New York, reason why he invited fans for a 3 a.m. bike ride lol.

    What happened to OJ Mayo?

  • LP

this has to be a typo, i agree…2.8 milly over 2 years…thats Mario Chalmers/juwan howard money….Maybe 2.8/year, and thats still cheap..

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

I mean, I know he’s a knuckle head, but he can be a game changer on offense, especially if Kidd is feeding him the rock now.

  • PJ

he and his dad made some good investments? what like a couple of pounds and kilos? it says he is only gonna get paid 1.4 mil this year but then after this year they can go over the cap and resign him for more money because of early bird rights, he’ll get his.

  • Otero

Lin Melo Amare and JR all starting Tyson Chandler should lead the league in rebounds easily

  • ChipS

@PJ: You know he made money before this deal right? I thought your joke was funny and all, but just because a guy looks and acts a certain way doesn’t mean he doesn’t know how to make money in a legit way. A couple hundred thousand can make you a lump some. It’s just what I read in a NY article when he first signed with New York. Maybe it’s just hear say.

  • Marcel

Oj mayo is goin to the suns…. I hope
