New York Knicks Sign Ronnie Brewer

According to NBA.com’s David Aldridge, the Knicks and shooting guard Ronnie Brewer have agreed on a one-year deal. Brewer’s option was declined by the Bulls two weeks ago, making him an unrestricted free agent. He averaged 7 points, 3.5 boards and 1 steal per game for Chicago last season coming off the bench.

    Good pick up knicks.

  • MeloMan15

nice pickup, this team is going to be super gritty

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

He plays defense, which the Knicks need.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woWqSmichOo RunNGun

    Dolan made it happen…

  • Ash

I thought nba had a salary cap?? Nice pick up tho I guess he’s replacing landry fields

  • http://www.slamonline.com Redd

Crap..well the Knicks definitely have become a least half way decent defensive team. This was the missing peace perhaps for the Knicks.

  • Mariano

    What’s happening to the Bulls?

  • sefos

Solid move. I’m all for it.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

The Knicks are such a convoluted mess. How does Ronnie Brewer fit in? He had to have signed for the minimum, so he’s obviously expecting minutes…what happens when Shumpert comes back? Man the Knicks are such a weird combination of talent.

  • ALD

bulls are going to suck this year.

  • http://www.slamonline.com nbk Troll

@ nbk, the knicks have such a weird combination of talent, but it is still talent. I think this is a good pickup, a solid defender to offset JR.Smith crazy @ss. Knicks have a interesting season ahead

  • http://www.slamonline.com Redd

@nbk they now have 2 players who will bring it defensively as well as 2 nice lengthy centers inside.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgvwfvTcNl0 danpowers

@nbk (troll or real nbk?): ronnie brewer fits in to give us stops on the perimeter while not demanding shots on offense. and what happens to brewer when shump returns? quite simple: considering our “luck” untill then somebody else will be injured so he will play… if it wont be brewer who will be hurt then lol

Brewer has terrible shot technique, he should not be an NBA shooting guard. This is incredible.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Redd, as of now, Brewer is the only good defender on the roster, and he by himself fits well with Melo, but he doesn’t fit well with Kidd & Felton w/ Melo. He can’t shoot. At all. (he had his best shooting season last year….and shot 27% from 3) – There will be no space for Melo to play his isolation ball. Are you trying to say the Knicks are going to win games with defense? Because they have 4 good defenders? (who play a whopping 3 different positions AT MOST)
Dan, not the troll – you guys are so set on what he gives you defensively…but it’s not like the defense he brings is going to make up for what he doesn’t give you on the other end. he basically is a great defensive player on defense, and a great defensive player on offense. He doesn’t make the Knicks any better with the guys on that roster. There is just no way. If they had a PG who could shoot, or even a 4 who could shoot and stretch the floor a little, then you could hide him. But they don’t. Unless you are trying to tell me a lineup with Kidd, Brewer, Novak, Melo, Chandler is supposed to play heavy minutes? I just don’t see why Brewer would sign for the vet minimum to play spot minutes. That doesn’t make sense too me.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Redd, “only good defender on the perimeter” – Shumpert won’t be back till late February, at the very very soonest. and there is no telling how good he will be.

  • O

I’m not mad at this signing being that there weren’t many SG’s to choose from on the market, and we have nothing to trade for one. Not to mention Shump won’t be 100% till the beginning of next season – if that. Knicks aren’t winning anything this year anyway, so it doesn’t matter who they sign at this point. Just give NYC an exciting season and we’ll be grateful for that. At least I’ll be anyway.

  • Araz

He just came from a similar isolation offensive system with Derrick Rose dominating the ball so the melo iso argument isnt relavent bc he is a good slasher/cutter that reads his man well. I feel like he will thrive in the up tempo style bc he is a great finisher and a good ball hawking defender.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgvwfvTcNl0 danpowers

@nbk: true that. but i think that there werent any other affordable 2-guards out there. i dont think that a 2 guard who is able to defend and shoot the ball would sign for the vets minimum. i also see that we dont have a stretch 4 unless we either sit chandler or stat to play melo as a 4. so i think many offensive sets will look quite old school (and ugly) which i hope will turn out good for us lol

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

yeah i just don’t like the mix, and don’t think Brewer really brings anything to the table for NYK. The team is going to be a 4-6 seed regardless of this signing (imo)

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgvwfvTcNl0 danpowers

cant blame u for doubting that team but i still believe in a 50+ season n we will see in a couple of months

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-talk/2011 Diesel

Cosign the real nbk on basically everything he’s said on this thread.

  • the king

    Bulls breakn up

  • ctk

the Knicks had a top 10 D last season…people keep sayin they dont play D..smh…they got Brewer for Miami ..u can play Amare at 5 Melo 4 with Brewer,Shumpert,n Kidd or Smith if he makin shots

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Their defense still didn’t improve overall with this addition. And they aren’t beating the Heat. That’s more than a pipe dream

  • Cranberry

If your saying what happens when Shump comes back, umm he’s gonna be coming back from injury, not like he’s gonna come back and play heavy minutes right away. Brewer made his name in Utah by being a cutter and working the baseline, you mean to tell me that Kidd or Felton or even Melo out the high post can’t find him? Some of you Knicks critics are as delusional as their fans. Good pickup.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Redd

@nbk you know I hate the Knicks but to say that Brewer minus him shooting isn’t a Defensive upgrade is crazy. Brewer will indeed help them defensively. Again, my emphasis being on Defense & I should’ve been thorough & said he’s the missing piece on D for them. Offensively, Carmelo, Stat, and JR will still shoot you out of the game.

  • mike

Look at like this. Brewer is a definite upgrade from Landry Fields

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

No Brewer is not an upgrade of Landry Fields. AT ALL. Not even a little bit. He’s a better defender, but he’s infinitely worse offensively. And he doesn’t provide the rebounding that Fields did.
Redd – Brewer is an upgrade defensively in theory. Not in practice. The teams defense will not be improved over last season because of this addition. Especially considering he’s taking on Shumpert’s role with him out, and many people consider Shumpert the better defender (i don’t — but i do consider Shumpert the better overall player). The real upgrade defensively for the Knicks was Marcus Camby. Brewer is not improving the Knicks. He’s a great defender, and would help if he were surrounded by other talent. But not on this Knicks team. With him on the floor the Knicks are benching their strenght (shooting) – with him off the floor their perimeter players can’t guard my sister. They still don’t have a starting caliber guard healthy on the whole roster. This i feel is being overlooked by just about everyone.

  • LA Huey

If this team manages a good regular season record, it’ll be Fool’s Gold.

  • Cranberry

@NBK: Brewer moves without the ball x1000 better than Landry Fields. That’s one thing Fields should’ve done more in NY. He doesn’t rebound better but he defends better! And another thing, Brewer won’t shrink in any hostile environment like Fields does. And please stop talking like Brewer is a shot chucker and doesn’t know his role. He’s a professional and has been doing this for a while. We know he’s not a scorer and he knows that as well.

  • http://bulls.com airs

the hell? what are you ppl saying?
y’all could have him and his broke ass jumper.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Cranberry, has it ever occurred to you that moving without the ball within an offense is a result of the actual offense being played? Landry doesn’t move without the ball on offense like Brewer because that’s the ONLY thing Brewer can do offensively. Everyone knows Fields is a better player. Everyone who isn’t an ignorant or casual fan I should say. If Brewer had any place to claim he’s a better player than Fields then how in the f*cking hell didn’t Fields get a lucrative contract while Brewer just signed for a 1 year minimum? Holy f*cking sh*t the implied stupidity from Knicks fans is befuddling. For f*cks sake, Fields is not a great player by any stretch, but he isn’t Ronnie Brewer. Fields would hVe been Chicago’s starting SG…Brewer could barely get off the bench. Fields had contract negotiations before Free Agency even officially began….you didn’t even know Brewer was a free agent until this article. Sh*t, please don’t come at me with that ludicrous stupidity. I would much rather be polite.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Slick Ric

Damn….NBK in straight hater mode today….sh1tting on the Knicks fan.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Not ALL Knicks fans. Some of y’all are sensible. But it seems the “average” Knick fan is a homer induced retard.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgvwfvTcNl0 danpowers

landry fields sure is a better overall player than brewer but brewer is just the guy we could afford. i dont really get the discussion here. we just needed one guy to step in untill shump comes back. brewer aint the perfect fit for the knicks. the fa signing couldve went better, couldve went worse

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgvwfvTcNl0 danpowers

lol @nbk. it just seems like that because there are so many of us ;)

  • http://www.slamonline.com Slick Ric

lol…I hear you, knick fans can be obnoxious but no fans are worse than heat bandwagoners.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgvwfvTcNl0 danpowers

thats just coz we know more about bball than any other fans ;) j/k. whatever, any real fan knows that you dont choose your team – your team chooses you. and speaking about heatbandwagon fans: any successful team got these sooner or later. life is too short to worry about or to even mention them.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

I don’t disagree slick. Bandwagon fans are the bane of my not a fan of anybody club.

  • DruNyce

Ha, everyone thinks they’re a keyboad GM .. meh. Nice pick up.

  • Cranberry

Hold the fu*k up! Who said I was a Knicks fan? Your the one making it seem like Brewer is moth*rfu*king Adam Morrison or Keith Bogans. Has it fu*king occured to you that moving without the ball is not just relegated to a certain offense. Ever heard of a Cutter? And Landry Fields linedrive jumpshots is not that much better than Brewer’s. Your arrogance makes you no better than the Knicks fans you tend to talk down to. Lmao at you bringing up Fields contract, your delusional as sh*t. Look who gave Fields that big dumbass contract! The Toronto Raptors! And they only did that because they thought it would net them Steve Nash. I did know that Brewer was a free agent btw, The Bulls you know, that NBA team in Chicago let him and CJ Watson go and traded Kyle Korver to the Peach State. they didn’t match Asik, which was smart. Got Kirk Hinrich and signed some guy named Vlad. I also hear John Lucas III is a free agent, do you know where he’s going Mr. Know It All? Just thought I throw all of that out there. I also hear that Slam, are in talks to trade you to Bleacher Report. You’d fit in great with those Know It All wannabes. Peace out h()e.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Lol Fields jumpshot is factually 10% better from 3 for his career. I never said he deserved the contract Toronto gave him, the reason I mentioned the contract vs what just happened with Brewer is to show that Fields is valued as a player. (Toronto and other teams would have offered him a contract regardless, he was restricted, so they offered EXTRA (in the 3rd year) to ensure NY wouldn’t match (Just like Lin – Asik). Which averages out on their (Toronto, Hou) end of the cap). Brewer probably could have got slightly more than the a million for 2 years from a bad team at most. He chose the minimum from NYK because it is a chance to prove he is still worth a multi year deal in the future. I’m not saying Fields is Michael Jordan to Brewers, Criag Ehlo. Just that Fields is definitely better. This, with Shumperts injury and the PG and PF positione being a horrible fit with Brewer makes me say the Knicks definitely are not improved by this move. And congratulations on know what has been happening with the Bulls. You are a scholar.

  • Mike From Spain

    @ nbk, from basketball-reference.com ->
Landry Fields has career PER of 12.9 and WS/48 of 0.94

Ronnie Brewer has career PER of 14.9 and WS/48 of 0,134 , plus is a veteran and had better rookie and sophomore seasons than Landry Fields.

Now, advanced stats are not everything, but it could be said that your preference of Landry Fields because of a 10% 3 pt shooting difference is not better founded than my preference of Ronnie Brewer for his better advanced stats.

What does a better contract prove? A different point in a players career, dumb front offices, marketeability, whatever. If we go by contracts alone, Pau Gasol is better than Lebron James. How can that scrub Lebron and his 16 million contract touch mighty 18 million contract Pau Gasol? (obviously this is ironic).

  • MikeC.

So, rounding out the roster with cheap and short-term, quality vets that work hard and know their role is a bad move? Brewer isn’t going to be asked to score on anything but backdoor cuts and fast break layups. He’ll be asked to slow down the elite 2s and stay out of the way. I get that his range is a liability, but there aren’t many elite 2s out there willing to sign cheap.

  • Lp

Nbk is actually right this time guys….. RONNIE BREWER ain’t no upgrade. He won’t contribute on offense, and won’t even contain LeBron or Wade, so he is useless…. No need to sign him. Coming from a bulls fan.
