Michael Jordan Laughed at Kobe Bryant’s Claim that 2012 Team USA Better Than ’92 Dream Team

Much like his good friend Charles Barkley, all Michael Jordan could do was laugh and completely pooh-pooh Kobe Bryant’s claim that his current Olympic squad could beat the fabled Dream Team. Reports the AP: “Jordan said that he laughed – ‘I absolutely laughed’ – when hearing Bryant’s comments that the squad training in Las Vegas could take Jordan and company. Jordan said there’s ‘no comparison’ which team is better. ‘For him to compare those two teams is not one of the smarter things he ever could have done,’ Jordan said prior playing in a celebrity golf tournament in Charlotte. Jordan said the 1992 team, which included 11 future Hall of Famers and won its six Olympic games by an average of more than 43 points en route to capturing the gold medal, was a better overall team largely because of the experience it put on the floor. ‘I heard Kobe say we were not athletic,’ said a smiling Jordan as he sat in a golf cart puffing on his cigar while waiting to tee off. ‘But we were smart. He said we were too old, but I was 29 and in the prime of my career. Pip (Scottie Pippen) was 26 or 27, (Charles) Barkley was 29, Patrick (Ewing) was 29 and Chris Mullin was 29. Almost everybody was still in their twenties.’ […] ‘Most of us were in the prime of our careers, at a point where athleticism doesn’t really matter,’ said Jordan, the owner of the Charlotte Bobcats. ‘You have to know how to play the game.’ Jordan shook his head when asked why he thinks Bryant made the comments. ‘I imagine he’s trying to say it to legitimize his own Dream Team,’ Jordan said. ‘But to me it’s not even a question what team is better.’ […] ‘For him to make that comparison, it’s one of those things where it creates conversation,’ Jordan said. ‘I guess we’ll never know. I’d like to think that we had 11 Hall of Famers on that team and whenever they get 11 Hall of Famers you call and ask me who had the better Dream Team. Remember now, they learned from us. We didn’t learn from them.’”

I say we settle this in NBA 2k13..multiple player option and every player get to have a controller of their own…

  • LP

Jawdddddddan……. this requires no comment. I bet the 2011 Heat can beat the 2011 Mavs too, right? because, that was a more athletic team…right?

  • onlytheflyest

    He has spoken hahaha.

  • Vic

it would be a good game!!!

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

MJ need to chill, acting like a little girl to keep Zeke off the squad, because he would not play nice with Mr. Air. Also MJ hasn’t forgotten that Kobe scored 55 points on him. Let it go MJ and MJ knows some of his cast mates were chokers or MJ would not have gotten 6 rings.

  • aaron

    michael jordan is a loser

    fade away jumper, nuff said

  • jayrose

It would be a great game to watch but I’m sure we can all agree that the dream team can take the youngin’s to school.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

it would be a good game, but the Dream Team is better.

  • Sizzle

I agree with MJ, BUT what should really be said is NO team will ever be comparable to the dream team even if a future team is better. It’s highly unlikely that another team will be able to beat international teams by an average of 43 points (due to the increase in hoops competition from around the world). Not that I wouldn’t want to see dream teams vs redeem team or the 2012 team, but what I would really want to see is the Dream Team against today’s international teams. No question they would still be getting the gold, but I highly doubt they would win by an average of 43 points. International players these days aren’t afraid of the us like they were back then. I think it would be a different ball game, and not pictures being taken after getting stomped by 43+

  • Guernsey Baller

The Seed…you need to chill son…No comparison. Haha..better than THE Dream Team..I’m laughin too!!

  • the king

jordan is not the god of basketball he was the best 2 play in his time and for all u people that think kobe is the next best who the hell on the 92 team is better then lbj kd melo cp3 d-will and i don’t like westbrook but no one on that team can stay in front of him this team would run that team out the gym run forrest run dam the can run

Lol winning by an avg of 43ppg is insane, no one will EVER come close to that

  • pposse

Seed dont get it twisted StacKhouse was guarding Kobe that game, not MJ

  • Red Star

Man, I love me some Kobe but I still love Jordan more!! Sorry Kobe but I’m sure you understand.

  • http://www.nba.com Gman

@Seed yeah calm down with that Kobe 55 on MJ lol.. they didnt even guard each other… and your comparing him to a MJ at like 40. And Zeke was already not going to be on the team before MJ. And your forgettign about Zeke crying like a little bi@atch when they tried to freeze the GOAT in an all star game.

the way i see it… 2012 squad cant beat the 2008 squad so whats the arguement about lol

  • http://www.fullc0urtpress.com KHoliday

Let’s win this gold medal first before we start playin hypothetical generation crossing Dream Team vs Dream Team games

    MJ the player, unstoppable!
    MJ the owner, fraud!
    MJ the interviewee, shut up!

    Kobek the player, can’t dribble!

    Kobe the interviewee, swish!

  • Lady

I’m laughing too Mike!! He wants to be like Mike and better! Dang Kobe!

  • Roi

The 2012 team is more athletic. But the 92 team overall had higher basketball iqs and were much more equipped to play together as a team. They were also more skilled.

  • Conor

The Dream Team with modern training techniques would make them even greater, if possible. And that’s nearly beyond imagination.
Kobe’s my favourite player, but the 2012 team would get its collective ass kicked. Rather easily.

  • Conor

    *”…if that is even possible…”

  • http://www.slamonline.com Redd

You can’t even argue this, the Dream Team would destroy. And yeah @Seed Jordan was 40 & he wasn’t playing that hard, he still had a better FG% in that game though.

Yeah. Isiah wasn’t acting like a little girl when his team got swept by the Bulls and refusing to play the final 11 seconds, and refusing to even shake the Bulls hands. Isiah Thomas total class act.
Dream Team >>>>>>>>> current Olympic team and the Redeem Team.

  • http://www.fullc0urtpress.com KHoliday

Welp Blake Griffin hurt his knee today, so that’s one less big body for this team in London… They better go get Anthony Davis

Just compare the Spain squad at 92 with the actual…

If everybody was healthy and say yes (kobe, lebron, wade, rose, paul, melo, durant, d12, deron, russell, blake..). How many Hall of Famers will have the current team?

    It will be fun.

But with the current team and not inside players I put my money at 92.

  • wixursss

How would the 2012 team grab any rebounds over the Admiral, Barkley, Ewing, or Malone? That’s the game right there.

  • pruzz

you had karl malone AND charles barkley
you had larry bird AND scottie pippen
    you had GOD AND GLIDE
    you had MAGIC AND stockton
you had ewing AND the admiral

the talent and the careers are insane, kobe should get over it….

  • AJ Smith

the seed’s seed should’ve been swallowed if he going to be posting such nonsense in a public forum. the king’s post was probably one of the most idiotic I’ve seen in awhile as well :/

  • mcruz

Must see one thing, the level of play for the 1992 world is not the same level of play there now. This team of 2012 would win by 50 or 60 every game in the Olympics of 1992. Now, would you believe that the 1992 team would win for more than 30 points per game? I do not think so. The level of play has improved worldwide.

  • http://www.blasphemy.com Chicagorilla

Everyone keeps saying that the Dream team was old. But as pointed out by MJ, many of them were 30yrs and younger. Lebron, Wade, CP3, DEron Williams are all over 25, add that to the number of games played because they came in the league early and it’s about equal. Also a guy like Magic doesn’t have to keep Westbrook in front of him. He has two of the greatest big men/shot blockers in history behind him in Robinson and Ewing. Good luck trying to finish over those guys especially since there is no illegal defense with the FIBA rules.

  • truth

The 2012 team could have 3 of the top 5 players of all time by the time their careers are over in KB, KD, and LBJ. Whose talkin about Hall of Fame? I’m talkin about top 5 players of all time.

  • pruzz

@mcruz: yes, i believe that stockton-jordan-pippen-malone-robinson would beat ANY team today by 30

  • Fresh

the 2012 team could run the 92 out of the gym? Well unfortunatly they wouldnt be having a race, they’d be playing basketball. Every one of the Dream Team was capable of scoring 50 on any given night and I think most of them did. Will Blake get 50 without making a J? Tyson Chandler? Ewing would eat Chandler for breakfast. NOT EVEN CLOSE. I love Kobe, but he’s trippin. But I guess its that level of self belief that gets you to be the highest point scorer in Laker history.

  • mcruz

@pruzz you think the 1992 team will beat 2012 Spain, Argenita, Greece, Lithuania, Italy, and Turkey for more than 30 points?? mmmm, not!!!

  • surety

Who in the hell can stay in front of Westbrook anyway? No one, not today or yesterday. But that still doesnt prevent him from being horribly inconsistent and making dumb plays.

  • pruzz

no sensible discussion can be had with the dream team and michael jordan in general. for a lot of people, he will remain the greatest player ever and the dream team will remain the best u.s. team ever regardless of any foreseeable future events. i have no idea who would win between the 2012 and the 1992 and to suggest that either team would get blow out is silly.

  • http://www.nba.com Gman

@mcruz Yes.. cuz they actually have fundamentals. you know basic cutting, passing, shooting, but i dont think 30. Perhaps 20.

  • pposse

hey seed MJ also was laughing at Zeke when him and bill walton were the commentators on NBC for the 96 finals and also the 97 finals.

  • http://ywcss.com deric

@truth…You giving guys HOF status and they don’t even have rings..LMAO….Most of your hall of famers have Gold to back up their claims. Only 2 people on the entire squad have more than 1 ring. LMAO..MJ and Scottie-6 rings. Magic and Bird- 8 rings combined. the Dream had 2…and most of the others got there but Jordan was waiting to put and end to their dreams. lol..Like he would do to KB and Lebron…

  • heyheyhey

lol, in reality only magic and bird were old.

  • http://ywcss.com deric

you must be a “youngin” lol….I can see you saying top 10 or 20 maybe…but top 5 of all time?? I guess we need to toss aside MJ and his 6 rings…Along with Magic and his 5, Along with Bird and his 3…not to mention kareem’s 5 and oh, Russell’s 11….huummmm…..top 5 huh?? Wow..

  • http://ywcss.com deric

  • robb

you’ll never hear Kobe saying he’d lose against someone, MJ included, he’s a very competitive guy. That being said, the Dream Team would kick their @sses

  • http://ywcss.com deric

Seed you must be under 30…Kobe couldn’t carry MJ’s jock strap. Who you think he “tried” to pattern his game after?? How many Finals has he “Lost”…How many finals MVP’s does he have? How “clutch” is he really?? How come they lost to the Celtics and the Pistons in the finals??? Kobe got 3 of his 5 because he played with the most dominant big man of his Era in Shaq diesel…by the way, the finals MVP in all 3 of their championships….

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

deric, obviously you are new, don’t bother with Seed bruh. never gonna change anything, he’s been saying stuff like that on here for years.

  • Ses

All you young heads that are blinded by the new school players, and think they could beat the 92 team need to go look at some tape, read a book and do your Homework! The NBA was a much harder league back then. You had to earn you’re rep (and money) back then unlike the primadonnas of the league today. Jordan in his prime would mop the floor with ANY (YES I SAID ANY) Guard today! Pippen would have definitely defensively shut down Lebron, Melo or Durant! All of the new Big men would be completely out matched, c’mon Chandler or Griffin on Robinson or Ewing??? LMAO…Too funny! NO CONTEST!! Like I said do your homework!

  • http://ywcss.com deric

and oh, who finishes at the Rim with two of the greatest shot blockers of all time?? DRob and the Dream…pat was alright but those two would not allow you to finish….and Yes, Pipp could defend Lebron…same height and ridiculous wing span of 7’3..not to mention just as athletic!

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

The Dream? Was not on the dream team. It was David Robinson and Patrick Ewing.

  • Heals

The Dream Team vs this squad, yes, the Dream Team (even with Isiah, young Shaq) vs the best 12 the NBA has today, I dunno…

  • SikhWitIt

I’d take the ’96 team. Dream, the Glove, Shaq and J-Kidd.

  • Heals

My bad, 12 best American players…

  • http://yahoo.com Kevin

The competition in world hoops is ALOT more competitive from 20 years ago. So the ”REDEAM” will not win games by a margin of 43 points. Back in 1992, the players from other countries were more into getting autographs, not trying to really beat the dream team. Now you have strong countries with alot of talent and athletic players.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Redd

The question was who can stay in front, Rose can speed wise. Defensively Westbrook can’t guard Rose.

  • Gabriel

This story is highly overblown. Kobe was asked a question and he gave an honest answer. He did not say this team was better or that they would dominate. He said, “It would be tough but he thinks they could pull it out.”

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Anybody still think my troll knows hat he’s talking about? Cuz that comment should squash that idea.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Magic was younger than Kobe is today. With less miles on his legs. David Robinson played the 5, starting. Ewing backed him up. Pippen was the real starting 3, Bird just played the first 3-4 minutes, then pretty much sat the whole game. You have to have actually watched the Dream Team to even have a legitimate opinion on this conversation. And you clearly didn’t.

  • Jeremy

    Kobe is an idiot.

Here is in-depth look at Kobe did not think before. .he spoke:

  • let it be known

ok, kobe says that the 1992 dream team was old and past their prime. ok david robinson was 26, patrick ewing 29, larry bird was 35 a year older then kobe is right now! scottie pippen 26 also, michael jorden was 29, clyde drexler might of looked real old but he was 30. karl malone 28, john stockton was 30, chris mullin was 28, charles barkley was 29 and last but not least magic johnson was 32 years old. so how was the 1992 deam team old and pasted their prime?? i dont get it. the only thing 2012 team have on the 1992 deam team is speed at the point thats all.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Yall MJ compared himself to Kobe, also for people to act like MJ never lost or choked or played bad in big games, or his teammates helped him win rings is crazy ridiculous. The 1992 Dream Team had some chokers on their, so to act like everybody on that team was clutch is untrue. Barkley and Malone gave away rings to MJ. Ewing couldn’t win a big game if you spotted him 15 points and David Robinson is nothing but Tim Duncans little brother in my book. The player everyone thinks about is MJ and Barkley on that team with Pippen playing defense. Magic and Bird was old, I have it on VHS and watched it all the time when I was young. The team played old at times, so of yall need to rewatch those games. The team won by 40points because the other teams were Bad, The Baylor womens team with Brittany would beat them. Some of yall need to wake up, MJ lost. He had only 6 rings. So alot of those years he lost then gambled then baseball then won. MJ played with the greatest defensive player ever to me and the greatest rebounder ever pound for pound. BOOK IT!!

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

The funniest sh*t about this tread was when somebody said that LeBron overpowers the Admiral. The same Admiral that blocked over 300 shots 3 straight seasons to start his career (no one in today’s NBA comes close to matching those numbers).
Production wise the Admiral’s first 7 seasons are right up there with KAJ/Wilt.

  • Byebye

Yeah it wasn’t no hand checking but it’s zoning and loading up to side of the best player on an opposing team elboys tithe back when they post up etc. I bet bron Kobe kd and wade would ave 30 back then
Bernard king had a great career being that he was 6’5″ at the small forward

  • trueballer4life

Back in 92 the rest of the world weren’t at NBA level. Now in 2012 European countries and the rest of the world has caught up. Didn’t US get the Bronze, losing to Argentina back in 2004?

  • flight

96 team was actually the best…start with 5 of the original dream teamers (pippen, stockton, malone, barkley, robinson, plus Dream and Shaq dominating Ewing and Latnner, plus miller over mullin and penny and ghill in primes.

  • Dee

Okay MJ could shut down Kobe. Who’s shutting down Durant, Lebron, Anthony or CP3? The only clear advantage Dream Team would have over this years team is the bigs. This year team wouldn’t have an answer for Patrick Ewing and David Robinson. If the original Dream Team lost to Bobby Hurley and Chris Webber you don’t think they’d have a problem with this years Olympic team. Jordan laughing at that is suspect! He ‘s the only player on his team that could laugh at that…you take him off that team and you have a very beatable squad!

Of all the current players, who could make the 92 team? Melo and LeBron likely since Bird was really a mascot since his back was so messed. Every other position is on lock by 92.

  • Justin G

Dee, did you see the documentary on the 92 Dream Team? Coach Kryzewski said that Chuck Daly threw that game to send a message that it’s possible to get beat? He didn’t want them just walking into the gym assuming they’d win, he wanted them to take it seriously. How did be throw it? He didn’t play Jordan a lot, he didn’t put some of the other starters out there for a lot of it. Webber was a manchild in that game and they showed highlights of both scrimmages. Coach then said for the next game the college guys just couldn’t score and “Oh, by the way, we played Jordan a lot more”.

  • http://bedotwater.bandcamp.com BE.water

They beat DR by 50. LMFAOOOOOOOOO

Larry Bird alone will trash talk this team to death, playing mind games before and during the game against these new Dream Teamers. These guys won’t be able to handle it, how much for the rest (Jordan, Pip, Admiral..etc.)?? And John Stockton will break every forward’s ribs on that team with his dirty screens. The Round Mound would bully KLove to the ground. Cp3′s floaters won’t get past the Admiral. and Lebron will have a nervous breakdown once again and will choke. Kobe?? Well, let’s say he will lose his damn mind for whatever happens during the game and will take those idiotic contested jumpers.

  • http://slam FLIGHT 9

Look mamba you are really stupid. First Bird and Magic retire and came back for the Olympics. Meaning they are not in their prime. Since its impossible to compare teams this is the only formula. PLAYERS IN THEIR PRIME IN 1992 VS. PLAYERS IN THEIR PRIME IN 2012. THE ANSWER TO THAT QUESTION WILL BE KNOWN WHEN MAMBA RETIRES AND 10 OF HIS TEAMMATES ARE IN THEIR PRIME. REMEMBER MAMBA THE 1992 REAL DREAM TEAM. BOTH WILL HAVE A COLLEGE BOY SINCE ANTHONY DAVIS HAS PLAYED AN NBA GAME YET. I PERSONALLY THINK 92 WILL WIN PERIOD….. CMON EWING, ROBINSON, JORDAN, BIRD MAGIC BARKLEY PIPPEN !!!!!????

  • Yep

everyone needs to understand the dynamics of training in 2012 vs 1992. lebron’s post game wouldn’t be lebron’s post game without the dream team. kobe’s fadeaway j may not have existed without jordan. it’s a dumb argument to have. like jordan said, today’s players learned from the dream team. EVERYONE learned from the dream team. they were the ones who innovated modern basketball. are lebron and kd more refined physical specimens than their counterparts on the dream team? heck yes they are. 2 generations from now when lebron is playing golf there will be another group of youngens with even MORE unbridled physical ability. doesn’t mean they are better ballers though. it’s scary to think how much better mj would have been if he were being raised right now with all of the additional information available on diet/nutrition/kinetics/training/medicine/technique

  • David

there would be no game jordan and crew would make kobe and lebron look like little kids at the candy store

  • ron

Kobe is overated, he wears 24 to be one better than 23, Kobes olympic number is 10 to be one better than jordan’s olympic number 9. I am old enough to say that if Jordan hadnt retired in 1993, the bulls would probably have won 5 or 6 in a row, kobe is nowhere close to the athlete or ballplayer jordan was. The 92 team was great and the 96 team with Penny hardaway and preinjury grant hill, shaq, miller, scottie pippen and that fake american hakeem olajuwon (kidding), shouldve included mutombo if possible, that team could compete with the 12 team but any team with lebron, durant, kobe, melo, westbrook, wade, is pretty hard to deal with.

  • Big Mike

If I was Kobe, I would’ve kept my mouth shut from the beginning, I’m getting sick and tired or reading about this

  • pnoyvibe

I’m sure Michael didn’t laugh when Scottie said that LeBron was better than him.

  • bakers-dozen

The current dream team would hang for the first half, but the originals would walk on them in the second. Playmaking as a team is 200% better than what players do today. Go to any gym in the land and you’ll see old guys running young guns who are more athletic due to the fact that they play team ball. The original Dream Team will never be topped by any team in history. They were just TOO deep. Malone comes out, Barkley comes in. I mean, really? How do you stop that? With Anthony Davis?

every championship kobe has was bought by buying him top level team mates.something the bulls didn’t have to do cuz they did it thru the draft and used the cards they were delt.kobe never had to earn a championship like jordan did.jordan whos team was all hall of famers.and lets not forget that jordan unlike kobe and the wimps they have today never didn’t play cuz they were scared of getting hurt or weren’t making enough money.these wimps nowdays are lucky if they win by 10 much less average beating opponents by 43 points.comparing the original dream team to kobe and his wimpy premadona’s is like comparing the special olympics to the real olympics.
