Michael Jordan Laughed at Kobe Bryant’s Claim that 2012 Team USA Better Than ’92 Dream Team

Much like his good friend Charles Barkley, all Michael Jordan could do was laugh and completely pooh-pooh Kobe Bryant’s claim that his current Olympic squad could beat the fabled Dream Team. Reports the AP: “Jordan said that he laughed – ‘I absolutely laughed’ – when hearing Bryant’s comments that the squad training in Las Vegas could take Jordan and company. Jordan said there’s ‘no comparison’ which team is better. ‘For him to compare those two teams is not one of the smarter things he ever could have done,’ Jordan said prior playing in a celebrity golf tournament in Charlotte. Jordan said the 1992 team, which included 11 future Hall of Famers and won its six Olympic games by an average of more than 43 points en route to capturing the gold medal, was a better overall team largely because of the experience it put on the floor. ‘I heard Kobe say we were not athletic,’ said a smiling Jordan as he sat in a golf cart puffing on his cigar while waiting to tee off. ‘But we were smart. He said we were too old, but I was 29 and in the prime of my career. Pip (Scottie Pippen) was 26 or 27, (Charles) Barkley was 29, Patrick (Ewing) was 29 and Chris Mullin was 29. Almost everybody was still in their twenties.’ […] ‘Most of us were in the prime of our careers, at a point where athleticism doesn’t really matter,’ said Jordan, the owner of the Charlotte Bobcats. ‘You have to know how to play the game.’ Jordan shook his head when asked why he thinks Bryant made the comments. ‘I imagine he’s trying to say it to legitimize his own Dream Team,’ Jordan said. ‘But to me it’s not even a question what team is better.’ […] ‘For him to make that comparison, it’s one of those things where it creates conversation,’ Jordan said. ‘I guess we’ll never know. I’d like to think that we had 11 Hall of Famers on that team and whenever they get 11 Hall of Famers you call and ask me who had the better Dream Team. Remember now, they learned from us. We didn’t learn from them.’”

Tongue is out while changing direction in mid flight. #SHUT UP KOBE

  • T-Money

no sensible discussion can be had with the dream team and michael jordan in general. for a lot of people, he will remain the greatest player ever and the dream team will remain the best u.s. team ever regardless of any foreseeable future events. i have no idea who would win between the 2012 and the 1992 and to suggest that either team would get blow out is silly.

  • http://www.nba.com Gman

@mcruz Yes.. cuz they actually have fundamentals. you know basic cutting, passing, shooting, but i dont think 30. Perhaps 20.

  • pposse

hey seed MJ also was laughing at Zeke when him and bill walton were the commentators on NBC for the 96 finals and also the 97 finals.

  • http://ywcss.com deric

@truth…You giving guys HOF status and they don’t even have rings..LMAO….Most of your hall of famers have Gold to back up their claims. Only 2 people on the entire squad have more than 1 ring. LMAO..MJ and Scottie-6 rings. Magic and Bird- 8 rings combined. the Dream had 2…and most of the others got there but Jordan was waiting to put and end to their dreams. lol..Like he would do to KB and Lebron…

  • heyheyhey

lol, in reality only magic and bird were old.

  • http://ywcss.com deric

you must be a “youngin” lol….I can see you saying top 10 or 20 maybe…but top 5 of all time?? I guess we need to toss aside MJ and his 6 rings…Along with Magic and his 5, Along with Bird and his 3…not to mention kareem’s 5 and oh, Russell’s 11….huummmm…..top 5 huh?? Wow..

  • http://ywcss.com deric

and Magic was only 32…Younger the Kobe…

  • robb

you’ll never hear Kobe saying he’d lose against someone, MJ included, he’s a very competitive guy. That being said, the Dream Team would kick their @sses

  • http://ywcss.com deric

Seed you must be under 30…Kobe couldn’t carry MJ’s jock strap. Who you think he “tried” to pattern his game after?? How many Finals has he “Lost”…How many finals MVP’s does he have? How “clutch” is he really?? How come they lost to the Celtics and the Pistons in the finals??? Kobe got 3 of his 5 because he played with the most dominant big man of his Era in Shaq diesel…by the way, the finals MVP in all 3 of their championships….

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

deric, obviously you are new, don’t bother with Seed bruh. never gonna change anything, he’s been saying stuff like that on here for years.

  • Ses

All you young heads that are blinded by the new school players, and think they could beat the 92 team need to go look at some tape, read a book and do your Homework! The NBA was a much harder league back then. You had to earn you’re rep (and money) back then unlike the primadonnas of the league today. Jordan in his prime would mop the floor with ANY (YES I SAID ANY) Guard today! Pippen would have definitely defensively shut down Lebron, Melo or Durant! All of the new Big men would be completely out matched, c’mon Chandler or Griffin on Robinson or Ewing??? LMAO…Too funny! NO CONTEST!! Like I said do your homework!

  • http://ywcss.com deric

and oh, who finishes at the Rim with two of the greatest shot blockers of all time?? DRob and the Dream…pat was alright but those two would not allow you to finish….and Yes, Pipp could defend Lebron…same height and ridiculous wing span of 7’3..not to mention just as athletic!

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

The Dream? Was not on the dream team. It was David Robinson and Patrick Ewing.

  • Heals

The Dream Team vs this squad, yes, the Dream Team (even with Isiah, young Shaq) vs the best 12 the NBA has today, I dunno…

  • SikhWitIt

I’d take the ’96 team. Dream, the Glove, Shaq and J-Kidd.

  • Heals

My bad, 12 best American players…

  • http://yahoo.com Kevin

The competition in world hoops is ALOT more competitive from 20 years ago. So the ”REDEAM” will not win games by a margin of 43 points. Back in 1992, the players from other countries were more into getting autographs, not trying to really beat the dream team. Now you have strong countries with alot of talent and athletic players.

Rose cannot guard Westbrook. Stop it.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

    Disagree real nbk.
PG Magic-cp3 magic was old and retired against a young CP3.
SG MJ-mamba I’m a lakers fan but MJ wins.
F bird-melo NO COMMENT NO COMMENT NO COMMENT (bird career but in this matchup Melo)
    F LBJ-admiral Lebron overpowers admiral
C Ewing-KLOVE In the future maybe Love but as of 92 and 12 Ewing.
Bird and Magic were over the hill. Durant could also start over Melo. Either way the current team is younger and frankly better.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Redd

The question was who can stay in front, Rose can speed wise. Defensively Westbrook can’t guard Rose.

  • Gabriel

This story is highly overblown. Kobe was asked a question and he gave an honest answer. He did not say this team was better or that they would dominate. He said, “It would be tough but he thinks they could pull it out.”

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Anybody still think my troll knows hat he’s talking about? Cuz that comment should squash that idea.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Magic was younger than Kobe is today. With less miles on his legs. David Robinson played the 5, starting. Ewing backed him up. Pippen was the real starting 3, Bird just played the first 3-4 minutes, then pretty much sat the whole game. You have to have actually watched the Dream Team to even have a legitimate opinion on this conversation. And you clearly didn’t.

  • http://gmail.com Gangsta

Viva MJ what a player he was!!!! The GOAT. As for kobe I’ve decreased ma respect 2 him. I mean who the hell is kobe 2 to compare himself to MJ?????? Ridiculous.Seriously I think he shouldn’t have been selected 4 London in the first place.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

I think whoever said he was an informed troll was just trying to be nice to maybe make him stop using your screen name and create his own. He’s obviously an idiot.
    Sorry troll.
    Your cool and all.
    Just not smart.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Damn. I forgot those guys. I guess you’re right then.

  • http://www.reverberation.com/tray24 T-Ray

Yea that was the plan Lake just didn’t happen lol

  • http://gmail.com Gangsta

kobe needs to simply keep his feet on the ground or shut the hell up.Nobody’s worshipping MJ 4 sure but even until today whenever I watch him he was simply the very best like 2PAC in Rap. Now what kobeers ?????????????

  • Otero

It would have been easy 2 stay in front of Westbrook back then with the hand checking and physicality of the game if Jordan played with these rules he’d average damn near 40

  • http://gmail.com Gangsta

lake show u nothin but a perverse snitch.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

    Okay.

  • Valkyrie

Rose’s quickness on offense doesn’t mean it will translate into being able to stay in front of Westbrook. Defensive footwork isn’t Rose’s strength. You must be a Bulls fan.

  • Percy Jackson

    Lmao @ Gangsta

  • Jeremy

    Kobe is an idiot.

Here is in-depth look at Kobe did not think before. .he spoke:

    http://blitzsportsnetwork.com/2012/07/kobe-bryant-thinks-the-2012-usa-mens-olympic-team-would-beat-the-1992-dream-team/

  • let it be known

ok, kobe says that the 1992 dream team was old and past their prime. ok david robinson was 26, patrick ewing 29, larry bird was 35 a year older then kobe is right now! scottie pippen 26 also, michael jorden was 29, clyde drexler might of looked real old but he was 30. karl malone 28, john stockton was 30, chris mullin was 28, charles barkley was 29 and last but not least magic johnson was 32 years old. so how was the 1992 deam team old and pasted their prime?? i dont get it. the only thing 2012 team have on the 1992 deam team is speed at the point thats all.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Yall MJ compared himself to Kobe, also for people to act like MJ never lost or choked or played bad in big games, or his teammates helped him win rings is crazy ridiculous. The 1992 Dream Team had some chokers on their, so to act like everybody on that team was clutch is untrue. Barkley and Malone gave away rings to MJ. Ewing couldn’t win a big game if you spotted him 15 points and David Robinson is nothing but Tim Duncans little brother in my book. The player everyone thinks about is MJ and Barkley on that team with Pippen playing defense. Magic and Bird was old, I have it on VHS and watched it all the time when I was young. The team played old at times, so of yall need to rewatch those games. The team won by 40points because the other teams were Bad, The Baylor womens team with Brittany would beat them. Some of yall need to wake up, MJ lost. He had only 6 rings. So alot of those years he lost then gambled then baseball then won. MJ played with the greatest defensive player ever to me and the greatest rebounder ever pound for pound. BOOK IT!!

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

The funniest sh*t about this tread was when somebody said that LeBron overpowers the Admiral. The same Admiral that blocked over 300 shots 3 straight seasons to start his career (no one in today’s NBA comes close to matching those numbers).
Production wise the Admiral’s first 7 seasons are right up there with KAJ/Wilt.

  • Byebye

Yeah it wasn’t no hand checking but it’s zoning and loading up to side of the best player on an opposing team elboys tithe back when they post up etc. I bet bron Kobe kd and wade would ave 30 back then
Bernard king had a great career being that he was 6’5″ at the small forward

  • trueballer4life

Dame right those babies learned from the OG VETS.. MJ said it best G.O.A.T..! KB24 IS outta place, his whole game is crafted like mj he copied his whole game..- once #23 is on the court hes not losing..!

  • sanman

Back in 92 the rest of the world weren’t at NBA level. Now in 2012 European countries and the rest of the world has caught up. Didn’t US get the Bronze, losing to Argentina back in 2004?

  • flight

96 team was actually the best…start with 5 of the original dream teamers (pippen, stockton, malone, barkley, robinson, plus Dream and Shaq dominating Ewing and Latnner, plus miller over mullin and penny and ghill in primes.

  • Dee

Okay MJ could shut down Kobe. Who’s shutting down Durant, Lebron, Anthony or CP3? The only clear advantage Dream Team would have over this years team is the bigs. This year team wouldn’t have an answer for Patrick Ewing and David Robinson. If the original Dream Team lost to Bobby Hurley and Chris Webber you don’t think they’d have a problem with this years Olympic team. Jordan laughing at that is suspect! He ‘s the only player on his team that could laugh at that…you take him off that team and you have a very beatable squad!

  • ReHeat

2012 team wouldve won the 92 games by an avg margin of 50.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

    Feet

  • http://www.slamonline.com Redd

    They’re barely beating DR..LMFAOOOO.

  • MikeC.

Of all the current players, who could make the 92 team? Melo and LeBron likely since Bird was really a mascot since his back was so messed. Every other position is on lock by 92.

  • Justin G

Dee, did you see the documentary on the 92 Dream Team? Coach Kryzewski said that Chuck Daly threw that game to send a message that it’s possible to get beat? He didn’t want them just walking into the gym assuming they’d win, he wanted them to take it seriously. How did be throw it? He didn’t play Jordan a lot, he didn’t put some of the other starters out there for a lot of it. Webber was a manchild in that game and they showed highlights of both scrimmages. Coach then said for the next game the college guys just couldn’t score and “Oh, by the way, we played Jordan a lot more”.

  • http://bedotwater.bandcamp.com BE.water

They beat DR by 50. LMFAOOOOOOOOO

  • Percy Jackson

I just can’t see these guys beating the 92 team if anything I’d say the 08 team would have a better chance
