its illegal to have any sort of gun in NYC thats a mandatory 7 year prison sentence at rikers island isnt it? This clown at the Rucker obviously did not care, but why should the gun laws change?

@LakeShow: Please take a look at the actual data, you see those numbers right there? More guns(legal or illegal)=more gun violence. 9,000 more annual homicides is HUGE, how can somebody not think that it’s a problem?

Not that anyone cares, but I’ve had LEGAL gun ownership on my resume since 1991…when I turned 21. 21 years later, I now own several, and they are all exclusivley for target shooting/self-defense. In 21 years, I’ve fired my weapon once in self-defense/self preservation ’cause two dudes broke into my car and I came out of my house and had them dead to rights as I was walking out to go to Wal-Mart for my wife who was feeling like sh*t. I could have shot them both and faced a messy police report and possible civil lawsuits. Instead, I fired one round (and purposely missed by a wide distance while making sure the round was heading toward’s an uninhabited area) after I yelled for them to get out of my vehicle. Three times. They didn’t move, I fired, they scattered, end of problem. Safe gun ownership is just the same as being a safe driver. You act like an as*hole on the road, texting, playing with your phone, whatever dumb sh*t you do, you’re a menace to people following the rules of the road. You use your weapon in a diligent manner, you will never have an issue that either 1) threatens your safety or 2)cause’s someone else’s life to be put in jeopardy as long as you know what the hell you’re doing with it. And the whole “throwing hands” sh*t O’s talking about? Yo, I’ve been playing ball for 30 years. I was fine scrapping when I was 18, 20, 25, sh*t even when I was 30, but damn man, I’m a father, I’m not trying to fight some dude WHO MAY BE PACKING HIS OWN SH*T in his car or his backpack and then have the tables turned on me ’cause buddy thinks he’s on some Tupac sh*t. It ain’t worth it over a game. I ain’t got payed to play ball in a little while. I’m not dying for nobody for ball. I LOVE it too much.

but the real question is, why do americans feel unsafe? that nra propaganda based on fear is why there is over 350 million guns in circulation in the states.

Lets get one thing straight, when you make stricter gun laws, the only people left with guns will be criminals. James Homes is the perfect example of that. If ONE other person in the theater had a concealed carry permit they could have pulled out their gun and shot that dude…crisis averted. If you guys think criminals are the ones obtaining guns legally you’re crazy. When you have to worry about every other person on the street possibly carrying a gun, you’re less likely to act like a fool and pick a fight, get into a heated exchange, or commit a crime. That’s my opinion.

Updating the constitution won’t stop guns from being in the streets yo… Tell the same people who get drugs into the country(the gov’t) to stop & maybe it’ll stop

@Diesel: About that Aurora scenario… it’s a dark teather and the guy threw tear gas or something like that. What are the chances that, if someone else in the teather has a gun, he’s gonna hit the shooter?
Now, say there’s a third guy with a gun, how does he know if the second guy shooting is a good/bad guy? And if there’s a fourth guy with a gun, who knows who is who?
And what about when the cops show up? How can they tell who are the good guys, and who are the bad guys?
If more people in that teather had guns, chances are it would’ve gotten a lot worse.

America is an industrialized 1st world country, yet countries like Congo DR, ALbania, Uganda, Vietnam, Cambodia and Kazakhstan have less gun homicides per capita.
And besides your 2nd amendment goes as follows: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”
Notice that^, it says A WELL REGULATED right there in the begining.

@Eboy: What if there’s another guy with a gun? How is he gonna tell if the 2nd guy is a good guy? There have been cases where there have been multiple shooters.
Ofc it’s possible that some hero guy could’ve stopped it, but chances are that it would’ve become an even bigger disaster, had there been more guns in the teather.
I just don’t get why it’s so important to have the right to buy assault rifles, 100 round magasines and carry them in public.

Why not get just more police officers? I would be much more comfortable with that idea, than having a bunch of vigilantes running around acting tough.
It works for other developped countries.
If you were to make up a hypothetical country, like in my 2:40 comment, that is of the same population as the US, and about the same GDP and HDI, but more gun control, it would have 45 times less gun homicides annually.

@EJ – In order to buy a gun, you need to apply for a FOID card. In order to get one, you have to pass a police background check and can’t have a felony on your record. In order to LEGALLY carry a gun on you in public, you have apply for a conceal carry permit. There are actual tests involved with that. You need to pass a gun education course and a shooting instruction course. Just because you buy a gun doesn’t mean you can legally carry it around. My point is I think the current gun laws are comprehensive enough. And if you are someone who’s passed all of those tests and obtained both your gun permit and your conceal carry permit legally, you appreciate the responsibility and seriousness that comes with owning/carrying a gun. You’re not pulling it out and shooting at anything that moves. Come of you guys that are against guns either aren’t educated on the current regulations or watch too many movies.

Less reported gun homicides. NYC has some of the strictest gun regulations in the country so obv gun laws don’t prevent criminals from getting guns. Had this discussion before on this site, gun laws only work for those wanting to be regulated, end of story.

@ EJ: Just because the US is a so-called “1st World Industrialized Country” doesn’t mean it’s a civilized society. The US is an @ss-backward place to be. You can’t expect gun control in the country that spends as much as the rest of the world combined on its military, and is the #1 arms exporter in the world. That just won’t fly.
Except of course, when those people happen to be black Americans. In that case you can expect stricter gun legislation. That’s why Ronald “R3dneck” Reagan was pro-gun control.

GUn control has become so unpopular that some intresting individuals think that Obama is too pro-gun control and that he’s coming for their guns, even tho the guy is basically a Tea Partier. He has done nothing to change things, and he’ll continue to do nothing in the future, but enforce existing gun laws, and yet somehow he’s too pro-gun control.
And I think the solution/problem to your 2nd comment is in the justice department, not in gun laws.

As a gun owner, I don’t think guns are evil. I think the lax laws regarding the sale of guns, are a problem. I regularly see arrests made for straw purchases, or gun dealers selling guns illegally to others. Those traveling gun shows are the WORST.
Furthermore, the assault rifle thing is ridiculous. You don’t need that for hunting. That is for killing humans. And yes, most assault rifle owners don’t kill humans, but gun manufacturers don’t have any way of insuring that their weapons only end up with responsible gun owners.
The basic argument seems to be that you shouldn’t restrict my rights because other people do the wrong thing. But that’s how the world works. Everyday, we are restrained from doing certain things because we acknowledged that there are certain folks who can’t deal with the freedom. That’s why we have speed limits on federal highways!
It’s only with guns that we think restrictions are so ridiculous. It’s silly.
