Nate Robinson Escaped Gunfire at Rucker Park Unhurt

Golden State Warriors point guard Nate Robinson was much luckier than the five people who were shot last night, at the legendary Rucker Park in New York City. Reports the NY Daily News: “Gunfire erupted around 10 p.m. at the Holcombe Rucker Park court on Frederick Douglass Boulevard near W. 155th St. after a dispute during a game for the Entertainers Basketball Classic, witnesses said. ‘They started arguing, about a bad call or something like that,’ said Rodney Harris, 47. ‘The guy was standing no more than five feet away from me. He pulled a gun out of his pocket and shot once. He then shot one more time. Everyone started running. He was real close to me,’ Harris said. ‘I thought I got shot.’ Nate Robinson, a former point guard for the Knicks, was at the game but escaped unscathed, witnesses said. ‘He was watching the game,’ Harris said. ‘After the shooting, he was okay. He wasn’t hurt…he left like everyone else.’ The five shooting victims were taken to area hospitals and all expected to survive, police said. One other person also was injured in the incident. The shooter started running amongst the crowd but then walked calmly across the street toward the Fine Fare supermarket and fired a few more rounds, Harris said. ‘Then he just walked away. He didn’t even run. My friend, a basketball player, got shot in the ankle,’ he said. ‘It could have been worse.’”

And also the 2nd amendment starts out with the words “A well regulated”

  • pposse

its illegal to have any sort of gun in NYC thats a mandatory 7 year prison sentence at rikers island isnt it? This clown at the Rucker obviously did not care, but why should the gun laws change?

My whole family is a gun family… Guess what, no ones murdered anyone yet… Shocker I know.

  • EJ

@LakeShow: Please take a look at the actual data, you see those numbers right there? More guns(legal or illegal)=more gun violence. 9,000 more annual homicides is HUGE, how can somebody not think that it’s a problem?
The number of homicides commited by your family only represents just that, your family.

Let’s be really clear, guns don’t kill people, bullets do.

@EJ: Those stats for America would be more telling if stratified by inner city/metropolitian areas versus everywhere else. This country has a serious problem with violent crime in our inner city environments. Gun laws play a part but probably a very small part. Inadequate levels of law enforcement, extremely poor/lack of education, gangs, broken families, drugs, etc. all contribute to the high level of gun violent crimes in these environments.

Not that anyone cares, but I’ve had LEGAL gun ownership on my resume since 1991…when I turned 21. 21 years later, I now own several, and they are all exclusivley for target shooting/self-defense. In 21 years, I’ve fired my weapon once in self-defense/self preservation ’cause two dudes broke into my car and I came out of my house and had them dead to rights as I was walking out to go to Wal-Mart for my wife who was feeling like sh*t. I could have shot them both and faced a messy police report and possible civil lawsuits. Instead, I fired one round (and purposely missed by a wide distance while making sure the round was heading toward’s an uninhabited area) after I yelled for them to get out of my vehicle. Three times. They didn’t move, I fired, they scattered, end of problem. Safe gun ownership is just the same as being a safe driver. You act like an as*hole on the road, texting, playing with your phone, whatever dumb sh*t you do, you’re a menace to people following the rules of the road. You use your weapon in a diligent manner, you will never have an issue that either 1) threatens your safety or 2)cause’s someone else’s life to be put in jeopardy as long as you know what the hell you’re doing with it. And the whole “throwing hands” sh*t O’s talking about? Yo, I’ve been playing ball for 30 years. I was fine scrapping when I was 18, 20, 25, sh*t even when I was 30, but damn man, I’m a father, I’m not trying to fight some dude WHO MAY BE PACKING HIS OWN SH*T in his car or his backpack and then have the tables turned on me ’cause buddy thinks he’s on some Tupac sh*t. It ain’t worth it over a game. I ain’t got payed to play ball in a little while. I’m not dying for nobody for ball. I LOVE it too much.

  • MUBWAR

but the real question is, why do americans feel unsafe? that nra propaganda based on fear is why there is over 350 million guns in circulation in the states.

  • Hobo Man

Can we maybe make certain guns less accessible to everybody? Do you really need anything beyond a handgun for anything besides hunting?

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-talk/2011 Diesel

Lets get one thing straight, when you make stricter gun laws, the only people left with guns will be criminals. James Homes is the perfect example of that. If ONE other person in the theater had a concealed carry permit they could have pulled out their gun and shot that dude…crisis averted. If you guys think criminals are the ones obtaining guns legally you’re crazy. When you have to worry about every other person on the street possibly carrying a gun, you’re less likely to act like a fool and pick a fight, get into a heated exchange, or commit a crime. That’s my opinion.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

It’s so incredibly easy to make your own gun too. If you have a barrel, the rest is easy as coloring in the lines.
Taking away guns from the people will only leave criminals with guns. Sounds fcking great!
Here is what it is on the micro scale.
    Watch this…
    Sign reads:
    No Guns Allowed at Park
So what do you do as a law abiding citizen? You leave your gun in your car. What do criminals do? Whatever they want. They are criminals. So now you have a law that says you can’t have guns in this certain place. Which you abide by. Which the criminals do not. Now criminals have guns and law abiding citizens do not.
    That worked well didn’t it?

Did you know that when teens send lewd images of themselves with their phones, it’s actually trafficking in kiddie pr0n? Shall we ban that sort of technology for anyone under 18 years of age? Alcohol-related troubles make life suck for a lot of people. Are you going to ask Congress to bring Prohibition back?

  • Basketball_iQ

Updating the constitution won’t stop guns from being in the streets yo… Tell the same people who get drugs into the country(the gov’t) to stop & maybe it’ll stop

150 people worldwide die every year after getting hit in the head from falling coconuts. Where is the stricter legislation surrounding these murder trees? Why are people allowed within 15 feet of those death traps? Will someone please think about the children?!

  • EJ

@Diesel: About that Aurora scenario… it’s a dark teather and the guy threw tear gas or something like that. What are the chances that, if someone else in the teather has a gun, he’s gonna hit the shooter?
Now, say there’s a third guy with a gun, how does he know if the second guy shooting is a good/bad guy? And if there’s a fourth guy with a gun, who knows who is who?
And what about when the cops show up? How can they tell who are the good guys, and who are the bad guys?
If more people in that teather had guns, chances are it would’ve gotten a lot worse.

  • http://www.lemon-aid.de J

so kids, what did we learn today?
don’t ever try to argue gun laws with us americans!
educated people turn into brainwashed zombies in no time.

if somebody in that theatre had a gun?
i have a gun and i have never shot somebody?
    you can’t be serious!
the criminals would be the only guys left with guns?
don’t you realize that lots of criminals only have guns because legally obtained guns are sold/stolen/lost?
where do you think those guns come from?
you guys discuss stats all day, but when it comes to murder rates and such you just resort to your constitution…
in basketball related threads you call people that totally ignore stats/facts idiots and worse.
though i never comment, i enjoy the intelligent and insightful discussions (most of the time) but your ignorance regarding issues like this is bewildering to me!

Diesel, you KNOW those coconut numbers are cooked up by the banana lobby!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

EJ…a legal gun owner with a trained eye (or a “good shot”) and sense enough to stay calm and try to resolve an incident like that, if it was possible, would have been able to put that clown down, or at least disrupt his ability to fire rounds, with learned technique and an ability to stay focused on the target. Trained shooters can work those scenarios out just as easily as a super-talented ball player can figure out a way to get points against a really tough D. Not the same, I know, but an example just the same.

  • EJ

    @LakeShow: Stats don’t lie.
America is an industrialized 1st world country, yet countries like Congo DR, ALbania, Uganda, Vietnam, Cambodia and Kazakhstan have less gun homicides per capita.
And besides your 2nd amendment goes as follows: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”
Notice that^, it says A WELL REGULATED right there in the begining.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

    The children…. How did I forget….
    BAN THE GUNS!!!

  • EJ

@Eboy: What if there’s another guy with a gun? How is he gonna tell if the 2nd guy is a good guy? There have been cases where there have been multiple shooters.
Ofc it’s possible that some hero guy could’ve stopped it, but chances are that it would’ve become an even bigger disaster, had there been more guns in the teather.
I just don’t get why it’s so important to have the right to buy assault rifles, 100 round magasines and carry them in public.

Why not get just more police officers? I would be much more comfortable with that idea, than having a bunch of vigilantes running around acting tough.
It works for other developped countries.
If you were to make up a hypothetical country, like in my 2:40 comment, that is of the same population as the US, and about the same GDP and HDI, but more gun control, it would have 45 times less gun homicides annually.

  • bike

The diverging opinions on this thread illustrate why gun laws will never change in this country. Not that they should. Eboy is right- owning and operating a firearm should be viewed as a serious responsibility that requires training and practice for proficiency. And thankfully, I would wager that most people that own a firearm would agree. Since we will never be able to prevent all nut jobs out there from getting their hands on dangerous weapons, the best alternative is to educate ourselves on ways to avoid situations that are potentially dangerous and/or know what to do if we find ourselves in such situations. Accept reality and work around it.

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-talk/2011 Diesel

@LA Huey – that’s just because those banana lobbyists have big dollars supporting them.

@EJ – In order to buy a gun, you need to apply for a FOID card. In order to get one, you have to pass a police background check and can’t have a felony on your record. In order to LEGALLY carry a gun on you in public, you have apply for a conceal carry permit. There are actual tests involved with that. You need to pass a gun education course and a shooting instruction course. Just because you buy a gun doesn’t mean you can legally carry it around. My point is I think the current gun laws are comprehensive enough. And if you are someone who’s passed all of those tests and obtained both your gun permit and your conceal carry permit legally, you appreciate the responsibility and seriousness that comes with owning/carrying a gun. You’re not pulling it out and shooting at anything that moves. Come of you guys that are against guns either aren’t educated on the current regulations or watch too many movies.

  • MikeC.

The entire human race is a sewer. Eventually we’ll destroy each other and our planet will be better off with us gone. I hate watching/reading the news. It’s so depressing. We act like we’re better than this country or that race. We’re all just a bunch of disgusting sociopaths.

Less reported gun homicides. NYC has some of the strictest gun regulations in the country so obv gun laws don’t prevent criminals from getting guns. Had this discussion before on this site, gun laws only work for those wanting to be regulated, end of story.

  • Q

    Where was the security?!

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

    Truth.^

  • EJ

@Diesel: FOID is only in Illinois.
Also a few states allow people to carry concealed weapons without permit. And all states don’t require you to pass any gun education tests to get a permit to carry. They’re not hard to get anyway.
And people are allowed to buy bazookas, 100 round magasines and short-barreled shotguns. Why are those necessary? The gun dealers don’t even report the purchase of such weapons to the FEDS.

  • http://www.theatlantic.com/national/archive/2011/01/the-geography-of-gun-deaths/69354/ EJ

@shutup: then explain why countries with more gun regulations have so much less gun violence.
And click my name for some gun violence stats within the US. What you said about NY is not true.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

No, short barreled shotguns are highly illegal.
    What is a bazooka?
What’s the difference between five 20 rounds clips and a single 100 rounder?

  • LA Huey

LakeShow, via wikipedia: “Bazooka is a brand of bubble gum. It was first marketed shortly after World War II in the U.S. by the Topps Company of Brooklyn, New York. The gum was packaged in a patriotic red, white, and blue color scheme. Beginning in 1953, Topps changed the packaging to include small comic strips with the gum, featuring the character “Bazooka Joe”.” The More You Know =*

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

    Huey….
If I didn’t have you… I’d shoot everyone with all my high powered, fully automatic, short barreled, assault rifles I bought from some 7 year old kid named Joe who lives in a apartment down the street.
    Thanks man.

  • LA Huey

Just doing the Lord’s work. I am but a humble messenger.

  • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bazooka EJ

@LakeShow: Short-barreled shotguns are “NFA weapons”, which are not restricted in many states.
Click my name for the actual wikipedia page for bazooka.
And the difference between multiple 20 round magasines and a 100 round magasine is that you don’t need to reload as often and can carry more ammunition, thus enabling you to kill more people.
Breivik, the guy who killed 77 people in Norway, actually bought magasines for his gun from the US, cause you can buy such large magasines there.

  • Backboard

Cosign J and its crazy how all those pro-guns guys in these comments fail to answer even one of EJs interesting questions. • JB

Typical night in NYC. I was born and raised in the Bronx. Left years ago because of bullsh!t like this.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

@ EJ: Just because the US is a so-called “1st World Industrialized Country” doesn’t mean it’s a civilized society. The US is an @ss-backward place to be. You can’t expect gun control in the country that spends as much as the rest of the world combined on its military, and is the #1 arms exporter in the world. That just won’t fly.
Except of course, when those people happen to be black Americans. In that case you can expect stricter gun legislation. That’s why Ronald “R3dneck” Reagan was pro-gun control.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Did ya’ll know that in the first six months of this year ALONE, i.e. from January 1 to June 30, 2012, there were at least 120 extrajudicial killings of black people? This means that, without trial, police officers and a much smaller number of security guards/self-appointed vigilantes murder one black woman, man, or child every 36 hours.
Dude, this is the “1st World Industrialized Country” that you’re trying to talk sense to. There is no sense! There really isn’t! That’s why I do support the right of people to defend themselves–i.e. those who really need to. Unfortunately this concept has been twisted around and shat on repeatedly… To the point where the perpetrators of violence are the ones most adamant about “self-defense” and the victims are the most feared.
Maybe if cops stop carrying guns and the US military and all the companies that make billions from the weapons industry disappear into thin air, we’ll get somewhere with gun control.

  • EJ

@Teddy: And how are you gonna become a civilized society if you’re not for gun control? The weapon industry would very likely start to shrink if there were more gun regulations. You obviously have to start somewhere, problems won’t just dissolve into air.
GUn control has become so unpopular that some intresting individuals think that Obama is too pro-gun control and that he’s coming for their guns, even tho the guy is basically a Tea Partier. He has done nothing to change things, and he’ll continue to do nothing in the future, but enforce existing gun laws, and yet somehow he’s too pro-gun control.
And I think the solution/problem to your 2nd comment is in the justice department, not in gun laws.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Just to add my two cents, someone said that none of the pro-gun people that have commented here have said that they’re against assault rifles. I don’t think anyone of the pro-gun people have said that they thought it was fine to have them. They’re overkill, plain and simple. They should be military weapons solely.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

James Holmes obtained all of his weapons legally.
As a gun owner, I don’t think guns are evil. I think the lax laws regarding the sale of guns, are a problem. I regularly see arrests made for straw purchases, or gun dealers selling guns illegally to others. Those traveling gun shows are the WORST.
Furthermore, the assault rifle thing is ridiculous. You don’t need that for hunting. That is for killing humans. And yes, most assault rifle owners don’t kill humans, but gun manufacturers don’t have any way of insuring that their weapons only end up with responsible gun owners.
The basic argument seems to be that you shouldn’t restrict my rights because other people do the wrong thing. But that’s how the world works. Everyday, we are restrained from doing certain things because we acknowledged that there are certain folks who can’t deal with the freedom. That’s why we have speed limits on federal highways!
It’s only with guns that we think restrictions are so ridiculous. It’s silly.
