OJ Mayo to Sign 2-Year Deal With Dallas Mavericks

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

Free agent guard OJ Mayo broke the news himself on Twitter last night, that he was headed to Dallas after spending the first four years of his career with the Memphis Grizzlies.

Mayo — the third overall NBA Draft pick in 2008 — will reportedly sign a two-year deal with the Mavericks, according to multiple published reports.

Per the Dallas Morning News and Star-Telegram:

Free agent guard O.J. Mayo tweeted the news that he has agreed to terms with the Mavericks, and a league source confirmed that it’s a two-year deal, with a player option on the second year. [...] Mayo tweeted, “I will be signing with dallas! #Mavsnation.” Moments later, Mavericks owner Mark Cuban tweeted, “Welcome to the family OJ. We are fired up !! MFFL Mavs/Mayo Fan For Life !”

The addition of Mayo gives the Mavs 10 players under contract, including Dirk Nowitzki, Shawn Marion, Vince Carter, Rodrigue Beaubois, Dominique Jones, Chris Kaman, Elton Brand, Darren Collison and Dahntay Jones. The Mavs also have a team option for center Brandan Wright at $947,907, and could re-sign free agent point guard Delonte West. [...] The 6-4 Mayo, who made $5.6 million last season, could step into the starting lineup with Nowitzki, Marion, Kaman and Collison.

The Dallas Mavericks got off to a rough start this summer, and faced major criticism from fans and media, but they’ve bounced back nicely and put together a compelling team for the 2012-’13 season.

Perhaps even more importantly, the Mavs are set up to be major players during next summer’s free agency madness.

Good Pick up for Dallas…. My Bulls come up short again when it comes to acquiring a necessity!

Mavs have really come back strong the last week of Free Agency. Very impressed. Still don’t see them as title contenders, 2nd round fodder at best. But that’s a big improvement on where they were 7-10 days ago.

Hursty, remember the Mavs weren’t title contenders the year they won the title. They were not even expected to beat Portland in the first round.

  • LP

Strike 3, Chicago…you’re out…..of the playoffs this year… again, the obvious, my bulls are rebuilding, taking a year off….

  • jayrose

Really bulls really? We finally have a chance to get a 2 guard and were letting him walk to dallas?

  • Fresh Boirdee

I’m convinced the Bulls are tanking on purpose either for next years draft and or free agency market. Rose is gonna be out for half a season and will need the other half just to get back in shape and rhythm.

  • T-Money

collison, mayo, marion, dirk, kaman w/ brand, beaubois, carter, jones off the bench. that’s a solid 9-man rotation. a 4th or 5th seed in the west.

  • http://www.nba.com Shadojoker

Wtf Chicago? How could you let this man whom you have been rumored to trade for for years slip thru your hands? I’m convinced too that they are gonna tank this season since Derrick Rose isn’t gonna be 100%…which is soo unfortunate.

  • rkj92

Man i’m not even a bulls fan but they shoulda picked oj mayo up.. whata joke.. Semi-contendors to barely making the playoffs again like 2-3 Years ago *prediction* Rose, or Noah leave due to Chicagos horrid front office maybe not anytime SOON but they will..

  • AyoMino

Im from Chicago but iRefuse to be a Bulls fan… They have this sense of “We had Michaeal Jordan so players should want to come and play for us right?” Wrong. Owners are wining and dining free agents in the hopes of them signing with them while we sit back and try to get the cheapest players we can find. The Bulls have done absuolutely nothing this off season and iFeel sorry for all you Bulls fans…#GoLakers

  • RunNGun

Not really a fan of Mayo but good pickup for Dallas; should take over Jet’s spot.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Big fan of OJ Mayo, don’t understand why he went to Dallas, don’t like their team makeup. He better be starting. If he is not starting he is wasting his time.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

It’s interesting how differently some teams are handling free agency. Either you believe in your core and are locking them up long term, or you think that you have a shot at Dwight or Chris Paul and are only signing short term deals to protect cap space and save money.
Personally, I would be shocked if Dallas got Howard or Paul, but we shall see what shakes out.

  • Valkyrie

I hope he starts. I’d only want to see him be a sixth man on a contender. His confidence tends to get low when his team is losing while he’s not starting.

  • Jake

I think he’s going to explode this year in terms of scoring . Memphis didn’t use him to the best of his . With this youngert lineup, the Mavs can get back to the run and gun offense as long as dirk Congress into the season rested, yet in shape.

  • http://none bogoyme

Good pickup by the Mavs. Mayo should do his thing but he gotta show Carrey er Carlisle he plays ‘em good D. At least Dirk wouldn’t think nobody wants to play w/ me thingy anymore hehe

  • patrick

Bulls should sign Delonte West imo..unless they want to tank the season..then they shouldn’t…

  • da real

great move for him and the team. he will be in the running for most improved player without a doubt. OJ with the green light and Mark Cuban behind him will be scary. Could average 17-19 ppg. good pick up for fantasy. Bulls/Pacers are retarded

  • RickyRude

I see Mavs easily reaching WCF with that line-up. They finally got a true center in Kaman and OJ and Elton Brand are great pick-ups, both can help spread the floor.

    bulls fans are hilarious.

  • http://www.slamonline.com spit hot fiyah

everyone calling for the bulls to sign him, with what money?

  • furiousfunkfanatic

Cuban is one of the best owners in the NBA. He never tanks, he always wants to have a good team that can compete. Obviously this is not a champion-ship team, but they are going to win a lot of games next season, so the fans will be still entertained. I hate it, how some owners (yes, I am looking at you MJ!) make their teams worse every season to get good lottery-picks. And when they keep losing they just blame the CBA and the high salaries.

  • http://www.nba.com Shadojoker

@ spit hot fiyah..bulls can sign him with the money they refuse to pay to bring back the entire BENCH MOB…no Ch Watson,no Omer Asik, no Korver(sign and trade didn’t count),No John Lucas 3:no Brewer, nobody cept the White Mamba Scalibrine (who is still under contract)..and they haven’t amnestied a soul yet. Don’t amnesty Boozer please..we may ACTUALLY need him this year..let Hamilton go..he was a fluke..

  • http://www.gil1906.com Pve_2

Very respectable starting line-up. I see no reason why they shouldn’t make noise next year provided everyone stays healthy. Saying that they are second round “fodder” is silly. Aside from the Lakers and Thunder, who are better than the new-look Mavs? They are neck-and-neck with the clippers, grizzlies, and Spurs comparatively in terms of personnel.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Keep It Real

The mavs are probably 7-8 seed. Their backcourt is small, there is no small forward deth, Kaman is weak unless he is the main option like on the clips when he was a all-star. It all comes down to dirk!

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

They didn’t resign those people because they spent all their money on Boozer, Noah, Deng and Rose.
Those four alone take up more than $50 million. The soft cap is $50, the hard cap is $68-$70 million. The Bulls also have Gibson, Butler and Hamilton under contract for another $8-9 million.
They can’t resign everyone with all the money they spent on their front court and Rose.

  • http://www.slamonline.com 19821982

I stand by my comments – still need one more. One more player Cuban.

  • Heals

Good stuff by Dal here (and OJ too). Obviously this wasn’t PlanA, but considering how their roster looked minus DWill a week ago they did an excellent finding guys to make them a playoff team that’ll be very pesky in the 1st (maybe 2nd) round…

Mayo will be in Phoenix, Toronto, Brooklyn, or Dallas next year. Depending on who gets and misses on the other big free agents.

  • http://www.slamonline.com nbk

^ that was me as 1982×2 – it has given me dudes information like 5 times already today. idk why that keeps happening. my bad bruh

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

Can someone explain to me how trading away Korver and not signing Mayo or Terry means the 1st seed Bulls are “tanking?” Do you guys even know what that means?

  • http://www.slamonline.com nbk

How in the world would Jason Terry help the Bulls in the first place? And in what world is Jerry Reinsdorf willing to pay luxury tax money for anyone? especially OJ Mayo? (because Cuban did this deal while promising to pay Mayo a lot more in the future, if you didn’t know that)

  • LA Huey

Chicago fans hopes and expectations about signing SGs are on par with Heat fans regarding centers. So hilarious.

  • http://www.stillonthebench.blogspot.com TR

I was hoping this would happen. Mayo gives Dallas its best shooting guard since Michael Finley? The Jet is a combo guard to me, I’m talking legit SG

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Nbk: Terry would “help” because he’s a SG and the Bulls need a SG! Right? Right?! Bulls fans can be delusional.

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

My bad nbk, that was me.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Slick Ric

WTH is this, hate on bulls fan day……good move by dallas, they have rebounded relatively well.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

    Lol right

  • T-Money

la huey – miami has a center, his name is chris bosh.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Shucks, was hoping Portland would sign him. I like Matthews better as a 6th man… We need to let Batum go and try for Gay or Igudala now.

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

West seeds for next year, as of now:
    1. Thunder
    2. Lakers
    3. Spurs
    4. Mavericks
    5. Grizzlies
    6. Clippers
    7. Timberwolves
    8. Nuggets

  • http://www.slamonline.com nbk

In what world is the Grizzlies going to be better than the Clippers? where is this idea coming from Caboose?

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

The Clippers without Chauncey looked lame. I’m also really not a fan of their offseason moves and Griffin’s injury doesn’t instill confidence. I know it’s against the norm, but I really don’t like how the Clips fit together. Plus Vinny. That’s the kicker.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Chauncey will be back by January. Griffins injury is very minor. Odom was a great pick up, Craford replaces Nick Young (and is an upgrade for the first year at least). Now with Grant they actually have another defender besides Butler. I really like what they e done

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

You and I just have different interpretations, which is fair. I don’t like Odom, he’s not a positive for team chemistry, Crawford won’t fit on this team, Grant will take minutes away from Butler, and they still have Vinny. If they fire him after 10 games, then I’ll cede that the Clips will outpace the Grizz
