Pau Gasol is Stronger, Calls Himself a ‘Beast’

Pau Gasol apparently bulked up over the summer, and he now considers himself a beast of some sort. Per Reuters: “I have been preparing myself and working to get better this summer,’ Gasol said. ‘First for the Olympics and to perform at a high level to be able to achieve our goal, and then when the Olympics are over, take a little break and continue to prepare myself for what’s going to be a very demanding (NBA) season, a season where we (the Lakers) want to get back on top as a team.’ NBA teammate Kobe Bryant took notice after Gasol led Spain with 19 points in an exhibition game defeat to the United States in Barcelona on Tuesday. Bryant said the 7-foot, 32-year-old Gasol looked stronger, absorbing contact and pushing back in an impressive display that boded well for future Lakers’ success. ‘I’m a beast,’ Gasol said. ‘Yeah, I feel pretty good. I feel strong.’”

That’s funny. I’m glad he thinks it, but that term “beast” seems reserved for douchey athletes with egomania. So unlike Pau to make that claim, but good for Laker fans like myself. I still don’t wish Spain well in winning gold medal.

Sure, you’re a beast yet SFs like LeBron can still keep him from getting the ball in the post.

  • shawnkemp4prez

  • Da-Meat-Hook

The term “beast” is played out. Let’s replace it with “MERMAN”!

  • BlackStar

I’m a Laker fan, but Pau Gasol and the word beast do not belong in the same sentence. Ever …

  • Kinetik

so black swans are beasts now?

  • James Aka…

He may have been joking a little there, exagerating for comic effect. He is known to have a pretty good sense of humour, perhaps it would help to see how he said it before jumping up and down online about it.

  • Jose

well i like the positive thinking i suppose

He’s a beast by international standards. Not by nba. White beasts in the nba are very rare.

    LOL^
White beasts are rare. I love that.
Please be a beast this year Pau. Pretty please with extra soft Charmin on top! (Maybe you can shoot better than 43% at 13PPG in the playoffs…sorry had to)

The Lakers situation shows how awful the all star game is. The Lakers will likely have 4 all stars this year but still aren’t considered favorites out west. Yes, Gasol will be an all star this year. He will be moved into the low post where he can be affective. Lakers this year can beat the Thunder and Spurs
    Nash Westbrook=OKC
    Kobe Thabo=LA
Durant MWP= surprisingly they cancel each other out. Durant offense World peace defense (am I the only one who feels stupid typing about “World Peace’s” defense)
    Ibaka Gasol=OKC
    Perkins Bynum= LA
So we have a great chance at them. And the ones where OKC has advantage is Steve Nash and Pau Gasol. We have a great chance this year. Remember, last year we were in that series last year, but we couldn’t keep it up and blew leads. Nash will help with that.

  • JoeMaMa

Durant cancelled out by Artest?? Ibaka better than Gasol?? *rubs eyes* Yeah…I read that right. Did I? *rub eyes more*

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

    ^LMAO…
    Lakers fans… Wait… What?..

  • http://www.slamonline.com Slick Ric

Good one KHoliday….I knew it had to be an acronym…he couldn’t possibly be calling himself a beast in its original sense.

  • http://slamonline.com Black Mamba

Have you seen Ron’s defense? He could get under KD’s skin easily. Gasol can be better than Ibaka but he has to go to the lower post and take it up hard. I realize that they might cancel each other out. But Gasol looked a little weak against Serge last year in the playoffs.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xC03hmS1Brk Max

KD is gonna drop 30 on anyone in the league.
The only dude I see giving him trouble to score is Tony Allen.

  • http://slamonline.com Black Mamba

    ^keep dreaming.

  • LA Huey

I feel Nash and Westbrook is a wash. Sure, Nash can’t play D but he still works the P&R like a Point God and abuse Perkins inability to defend it AND take feed “Beast” Gasol as he’ll use Ibaka’s instinct to leap from the weak-side against him.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Black Mamba you should feel stupid for typing out that Artest and Durant cancel each other out.
    LOL.
    Stop playing son.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Huey
Westbrook destroyed a very capable Mario Chalmers. Do you remember what Tony Parker used to do to Nash in those old Suns vs Spurs series?
If Steve Nash jumps out and tries to guard Westbrook he will be slaughtered like a calf when veal chops are on the menu.
It will not be pretty at all. And Perkins is not great on the P and R roll but neither are the Lakers big. And Westbrook is more equipped to dominate as a scorer.

  • LA Huey

Yeah, I’m very aware of what Russbrook can do and I know Nash is a sieve defensively (as does everyone in the world). Just saying that match-up is a wash. I think the Thunder are still better because it’ll come down to Durant getting his at a more efficient clip than Mamba.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

    Nash vs Westbrook
    One thinks before he moves.
The other moves before he thinks.
    One has insane passing ability.
The other resembles a SG in passing ability.
    One is a defensive beast.
The other is awful, but not useless.(charges are defensive, whether we like it or not.)
One has a shaky jump-shot that if “turned on” can drop many buckets in a row on you.
The other measures up every shot and turns in insane shooting numbers because of it.
    Ones old and slow.
The other is athletic and fast.
    .
    .
    .
Sounds like a ‘gol darn wash to me.

  • http://slamonline.com Black Mamba

I should feel stupid for having an opinion? Go to youtube and watch metta’s defense if you care that much. Also cosign LA Huey. Still think Russell has a slight advantage.

  • LA Huey

Here’s Durant’s numbers for the series: 51.6% FG and 39.1% 3P for 26.8 for the series. That’s compared to 49.6% FG and 38.7% for 28.0 for the regular season. You’ll see Durant gets about 1 less point but scores slightly more efficient than normal and conclude that Metta has virtually no impact on KD’s scoring. Unless you can provide Durant’s numbers when he’s being guarded by MWP. That could tell a different story.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Huey… Whats with the FACTS bro?
Git outta here with that ish.

  • LA Huey

nbk, seems to be on hiatus and he makes me feel small with his advanced stats. Let me have my moment.

  • http://Slamonline.com Black Mamba

I never said he could change his efficiency. I meant he makes it more difficult for him to score. If Durant is being guarded well by Metta then it’s difficult to get him the ball. And when he does get it it’s difficult for him to score. That’s why his numbers dip when he’s matched up with him. No disrespect to KD. Metta is a former defensive player of the year and one of the best defenders in the game. Why is it so unbelievable that he can guard someone? With this relatively same cast in 2010 we beat Russell Westbrook, Deron Williams, Steve Nash, and Rajon Rondo with Derek Fisher as the PG. with the exception of Rondo and Westbrook those guys were better during those years.

  • http://Slamonline.com Black Mamba

Huey, nbk is having a personal issue and is probably too busy to comment right now.

  • LA Huey

The things that Durant does best does not play into Metta’s strengths. I don’t think KD even notices that MWP’s the dude tryign to check him.

  • http://Slamonline.com Black Mamba

Metta is an adaptable defender. Again, KD’s numbers dip when being guarded by him. Most of his numbers came when that useless Matt Barnes was guarding him

  • LA Huey

Let’s assume KD’s numbers drop when MWP guards him (because you haven’t provided the stats to back it up), it’s obviously not enough of a difference to stop him from getting his normal numbers.

  • http://Slamonline.com Black Mamba

    Per nba.com/advanced stats
    World peace on court= 22.7 PPG 44%FG 4.7 Rebounds 1.7 assists
World peace on Bench=24.0 PPG 57%FG 6.0 rebounds 3.0 assists
That was for both careers not the playoff series last year

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

^That’s exactly what I would expect.
I’m a big Ron Ron fan. He IS a great defender and always has been.
    BUT.
What you were initially arguing is that Metta negates Durant. Thus meaning that Metta would hold him to those numbers and match his production on the other end.
    So… NO.
Metta and Durant do not cancel each other out.

  • http://Slamonline.com Black Mamba

I never said he would match it. What I meant by cancel out is that Metta is better at defense than Durant but Durant is better than Metta at offense.

  • LA Huey

Why won’t you let me post, SLAM?!

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Yes… but even with Durant being less effective on D, Ron still can’t/won’t “light him up” for whatever number Durant scores.

  • http://Slamonline.com Black Mamba

    I never said he would

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

    Yes. Yes, you did.
    Words don’t lie.
    Here i’ll help ya.
Black Mamba Posted: Jul.27 at 3:52 pm: Durant MWP= surprisingly they cancel each other out.

  • LA Huey

Per 36 min, KD averaged 5 fewer points with Metta on the court in the 2012 playoff series than his normal numbers during the regular season. With Metta on court, His FG% was 4 points higher and 3P% remained the same. I’m not sure what if that means Metta slows him down but it’s clear is the Lakers are facked if Metta can’t play. Durant goes Wilt on the Lakers when Metta was on the bench. Per 36 min in 2012 series: 47.4 PPG!!!

  • LA Huey

However, I’ll be fair. Durant circa 2011 is different from the snot-nosed kid Artest was punking before and 5 games in the playoff is a bit of a small sample size. While KD isn’t scorching MWP, Metta, at best, merely makes Durant work bit more for his usual meal.

  • http://Slamonline.com Black Mamba

@lakeshow I explained what I meant by cancel out
@LA Huey. I agree the Lakers are facked if Metta can’t stop Durant.

  • http://Slamonline.com Black Mamba

Overall I’m happy with how we match up and am looking forward to an exciting season. And in no way am I saying Metta overall is better than KD. HELL NO. I’m saying that Metta’s defense is better than Durant’s defense. But Durant’s Offense kills Metta’s

  • LA Huey

You should choose a handle that isn’t an NBA player’s nickname. It can make referring to you kind of weird. Why not try these: “Snake Charmer”, “Cottonmouth”, “Copperhead”, “California Mountain Snake”, or “Sidewinder”.

  • http://Slamonline.com Black Mamba

All good options. But after going through the whole copyright process with Kobe I think I should stick to this LOL
