Portland Trail Blazers Offer Roy Hibbert a Maximum Contract

Pacers center Roy Hibbert is a restricted free agent, and some big offers were surely expected to come in once free agency hit Saturday night, but not exactly this big. According to SI, the Portland Trail Blazers have offered the 7-footer a max deal. Ball’s in your court, Indiana: “The Portland Trail Blazers offered Indiana Pacers restricted free agent center Roy Hibbert a maximum contract after visiting with him in Washington, D.C., early Sunday, SI.com has learned. A source with knowledge of the meeting said Indiana did not offer a max deal at the outset of the free-agent negotiating period and, unless that changes, Hibbert was leaning toward signing the Trail Blazers’ four-year, $58 million offer sheet. The Pacers would then have three days to match the offer and retain the 25-year-old All-Star. In addition, the source said one other team, which was not named, also offered Hibbert a max deal after the start of free agency on Sunday at 12:01 a.m. ET. Players cannot officially sign contracts until July 11. New Blazers general manager Neil Olshey and team president Larry Miller were among those meeting at the office of Hibbert’s agent, David Falk, the source said.”

Good bye, Roy. Enjoy Portland. there is no way I’m paying a max contract for Roy 14 and 9 Hibbert. I will kill Portland’s cap and, frankly, he is a good player, not a max player.

    image being 7 feet tall……$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
this puts a lot of preassure on indiana.

  • Wet

    4 year 58 million isn’t two overpriced…. But it’s definetely high.

  • Groves

they just got meyers leonard, give the kid a chance

Must be nice to have Paul Allen’s checkbook and have luxury tax essentially be dryer lint to make sure you get the players you want.

  • ripslam

Knew this guy was going to get overpaid. Sets the Pacers back a bit though if they lose him.

  • The Mauve Avenger

Take the money boy Indiana isn’t doing anything too special in the future. I swear Portland was a team of giants.

LA and Hibbert? That could be monstrous

    Cosign MUBWAR
That tandem would definitely be a force in the West.

Sounds like a good deal for Hibbert. $58m to hang out with the trainers and wear fly suits on the bench like the many centers before him in Portland. The curse is real…

  • jose

maybe 48-52 mill. . .not the max though. but its hard to find big men

  • ash

I wouldn’t go to Trailblazer becuase of there history of hurt players. He should pass

  • Heals

Love how he compliments LA’s game, but interested to see how Port would fill out the remaining roster over the next few years. They’re definitely a Western Conf elite team, I just dunno if they’ll be able to get the necessary talent on the wings and in the back court to make folks put them on OKC’s level…

So much for the “new CBA will stop teams from making stupid decisions” nonsense that Stern tried selling us.

  • Sharydhakrya

LA and Hibbs would be a good combo, but they got nothin else. Batum wants to sign with the T-Wolves, Gerald Wallace is gone, Nate McMillan was fired, and Brandon Roy is retired. Who else is on that team? Wesley Matthews?

  • Sharydhakrya

What the f*ck…I never used Sharydhakrya as a name before. It automatically gave it to me. That’s racist

  • Slam-man

Good for him. He’s only gonna get better. Eventually will be top five center in the nba, if he’s not already, once he improves on the offensive end.

  • Jake

Wtf? Good job wasting your draft pick guys. Memories of Jermaine O’Neal…

  • DoctorDL

Actualy, Sharydhakyra, the latest buzz around Portland (that I know of) has Batum signing the latest offer sheet. I think those three are a great starting place, but of course the Blazers have some work to do before they are a true contender again. That said, Lillard was a great draft pick. I have been dreaming of a super-athletic lead guard for years and hope he can play the part. We’ll see about Leonard. I do think $58 million is a bit steep for Hibbert, but he is definitley a top 5 center in the league and seems to just keep getting better. So I’m going to go ahead and assume Hibbert ends up a Blazer. If Batum stays in town that’s reason enough for cautious optimism. Then if we could just replace the medical staff.

Blazers really are looking make it to semi conference in west with this type of move.

Seriously. Hibbert is. 14 and 9 avg and only reason an Allstate center because KG wasn’t producing or was even considered a center by most ore Allstar break. Also, a healthy bogut is leaps and bounds better than hibbert.

Hibbert is too finess of a big to really be max level worthy. Now if he bangs hard on block and frees lamarcus to be a high post player and hibbert gives more defense… Than you have potentially top 5 front court in the league assuming Meyers can be a good rotation 8 and 8 guy.

But Damian Lillard is biggest question mark. How will hibbert get ball… Lamarcus doesn’t bring it up lol.

  • MirChilly

If they can get Eric Gordon then yea, good deal. Portland needs to fire their training staff and pay for phoenix dr’s. It all comes down to if they can get Eric

  • http://www.dimemag.com showtime

eric gordon is not going anywhere N>O is going to match any offer. But Everything okay PAcers fans , just for insurance plans instead of getting real talent on the board..cough pj3 or moultre cough.. U have Miles plumlee as back up.lol. what a waste of a pick .lol.. back to both of the division u go..

  • http://www.dimemag.com showtime

That miles plumlee pick is so great now huh, lol… back to bottom the pacers go..~ who picks a plumlee over moultre or PJ3 come on son

  • http://Slamonline.com Captain Mar-Vell

    Ha ha yeeee

Pacers really messed up using first round pick for a backup center whose going to riding pine in nbdl due to poor skill set.
His athleticism is great but doesn’t translate.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

As a Blazer fan, I’d love to get this guy, but we already have a bunch of centers- Pryzbilla,Leonard,Thabeet and Okur… Hope they land Gordon too. Anyone else remember a couple years ago when Blazers offered Milsap a huge contract, that Utah ended up matching (And used up all their $ that they probably had planned to spend elsewhere)?

  • http://Www.nba.com VanCityBBall

Brandon ROY out and ROY Hibbert in?

  • Red and Black pinwheel

@Boss Terry. All of our centers are gone, they were all expiring contracts we have none of
Those guys. I’d love to get hibbert. Lillard, Matthews, Batum, Aldridge, Hibbert. That’s a lineup

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

I’d like to resign Joel, and keep Thabeet around in hopes that he will develop into the player we thought he would be (maybe a poor mans Mutumbo) I also think its important to lock-up Hickson for a few years.. Any word on Crawford’s status?

  • Red and Black pinwheel

Crawford will not be back for sure, we gave no qualifying offer to hickson so I doubt we will have him and ya I’m with you with thabeet might as well try it out. I can see us gettin Joel back just for the leadership.

  • Buyout

    I hope the Pacers match

  • FnF

Frank Vogel just put Paul George on the Eddy Curry diet so he can play Center. So long Hibbert.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

I think the Pacers will match… Pacers will be even better next year if they keep everyone: If Dwight goes to the West Conference Hibbert becomes the East’s best “true” centre… but he’s not that far off really from being great, just needs to get stronger…. 14ppg & 8rpg can easily get to 19ppg & 10rpg when you improve your athleticsm…. or just box out better!?!? O_o

  • gaber

    Monroe is better

  • http://www.cuarog.com cuarog

i think miami heat will be even better when dwight howard goes 2 miami heat ok sir

  • http://www.cuarog.com cuarog

    go miami go’.’.’.’.’

  • ron

    Roy who?

  • LP

2 decent draft picks, Hibbert, Aldrdge, Batum, Matthews….nice little core

  • Bob

Hibbert is a system guy. He isn’t that athletic and worked hard to get to 12 and 8 boards last year. I would wait for someone like Al Jefferson or Pau Gasol. I just don’t like his upside or his heart in the last part of the Heat series. He was owned and didn’t know what to do……. not worth a max.

  • LA Huey

Co-sign JTaylor. This is going to be even more ridiculous when Indy matches.

  • roybot

In a perfect world we would get to keep Batum and nab this guy. These days I’m not so confident we can have both, but then again, in a perfect world Roy Hibbert and Hasheem Thabeet both reach their potentials and dominate the NBA as a kick-ass two-one punch at center. Hoping Batum’s heart is still in Portland.
